Active Display Issues - Moto X General

I am having trouble with the active display on my moto x 2013 lately.
The digits appear broken. They don't render completely. Some times they overlap.
I have tried factory reset but the issue still persists.
I have attached a screen shot of the problem I am facing.
Has anybody faced this issue before?
Looking for some assistance on how to fix this issue.

I have a similar issue where numbers start to overlap each other. I think it happens between 9-10AM most of the time if I remember correctly. Never bothered taking a picture but I might now that someone else is having a similar problem.

Mine is not restricted to a given time of the day. It happens randomly. I tried deleting cache, doing factory reset. it would fine for some time.

A strange problem

It's obvious not that serious of an issue but this is a terrible attitude to have about something you use daily and paid actual money for.

you are right,
but if it is still under warranty sent them to repair.
this is simplest solution :silly:

I have a bug too with AC: the 1st digit of the hour sometimes is 0 instead of 1, so when it's 17:34 i see 07:34, not always but it's annoying.

I've noticed mine only a few times, usually with the hours, not the minutes. I do specifically remember one time I woke up and looked at my phone, saw it says "1:00" and I was upset that I had slept in so late, but was very tired so I went back to sleep (it was already late, so what's another hour?). When I woke up later it was only 11:45. I guess it was actually either 10:00 or 11:00 when I woke up the first time, and the display was glitched for a moment. A reboot usually fixes it when issues persists.
I've also noticed that sometimes the Active Display does not vibrate when I touch it, or the lock ring will show up but no clock or notifications, even when they are pending and showing on the screen. If I touch the center of the screen the only icon I see is the bottom unlock, no notification text or the clock up top. Once I unlock it seems to flush it out and work fine after that. Lastly, sometimes the screen brightness gets goofy and seems much brighter than it should be, but it's rare.
If your phone is doing this a lot (I've noticed the clock issues maybe 10 times total over the last 14 months or so), I would look at getting it repaired or replaced.

mine actually just started doing this too. In my case the 1st digit after the : is not there. only seems to happen, or I only notice between 7am and 8am. usually unlocking fixes it, sometimes I need to restart.

Mine did this for the first time a few days ago. At 11:14 the active display said 1:141. I clicked the power button and it hasn't happened since.

[TEST] touch screen/calibration issues... may have figured some things out?

Ok, so over the course of time I have owned my phone I think I may have found one of the reasons for the phone to go out of calibration in terms of touch accuracy but I just want to make sure its not just my phone doing it.
What I have noticed is that if I hold my phone at an awkward angle for a few minutes (typically 5ish minutes) the calibration will go out of whack. This notoriously happens when I have my phone in navigation mode and just laying on my lap (landscape mode). Today I was driving and I got a text mid way to where I was going so I picked the phone up to hit the talk-to-text button (which is really nice for texting while driving by the way) and it was out of calibration, could not hit the button to save my life. Similar has happened when I held the phone at an awkward angle while watching a movie laying in bed. So I would like to see if anyone gets similar results holding the phone at an awkward angle for a few minutes, I would say give it 5-10 minutes for an accurate result. Try doing things like holding it literally upside down while its in landscape mode and then switching it back to portrait and type on the small keyboard again. I would go into a program of some sort that you can test touching all areas of the screen with.
Now, it seems like before the OTA update, I would have to reset the phone and sometimes that wouldnt work still. However now (and I have tested multiple times with consistent results) that if you lock the phone and then unlock it, the calibration seems to be adjusted again.
Let me know your results.
**For the record, I have had a very positive experience with this phone since I purchased it but I have been able to replicate the "touch screen issue" many a times and would just like to get to the bottom of the issue if all else to just avoid it or tell others how to avoid it happening to them because it is quite annoying.
it sounds like a software hiccup i would hope it would be getting patched sometime..... but as of now i dont know of anyone that's got a fix for it. i have the problem from time to time but i just lock and unlock and its fine, kind of annoying but not something that makes me want to throw it out the window or anything.
Judging from the behavior, I'll place my bets on it being a software issue rather than hardware. There seems to be some hiccups between the accelerometer and the screen getting confused about angles/tilting.
didnt happen to me before upgrade. Its happened a couple of times since.
My phone had been on charge and I had changed to setting to disable it from sleeping while on charge. I had turned the screen off but it must have woke up I went to use it and couldnt hit any keys.
I thought it may be something to do with it being awake for a long time - but it could be coincidence.
I can confirm that putting the phone to sleep and waking it fixes the problem
I have the same issue. No problem before OTA and described problem after that. Grrr.
Mmm, I experienced the problem both before and after the OTA, so I dunno.
Good to know that you can just sleep the phone and then wake it back up to fix the issue now. You used to have to reboot.
I have not had the issue at all since removing live wallpapers. Maybe just a coincidence.
Do people using custom ROMS have these issues?
Ok, so there are similar results out there then and sounds like 100% confirmed just locking and relocking recalibrates the phone back into proper order, no more full reboot is needed.
For the record, I am not using a live wall paper, I have not rooted or installed any themes or anything so my phone is all stock besides the OTA update. Also, as someone else stated that you used to have to restart your phone before the update and I experienced the same thing but again now I only have to lock and unlock the phone for it to recalibrate.
Grainysand you and I seem to have had similar "issues" if you even want to call them that with before and after the OTA and I share your view that there is an issue between the accelerometer and the software recognition.
It's definitely the accelerometer. For the record, I've never had to either reboot or relock/unlock the screen to fix this. I hold the phone upright and it corrects itself, though sometimes it recurs.
I've noticed this a few times after the ota, but just turned it off/on to fix.

Same here. Usually when in landscape mode and the device is tipped at a 45 degree angle. I've also seen the N1 (when using the browser in landscape) scroll the page back and forth very quickly (about 1/4"). When this happen the device seems to get 'stuck' in landscape mode even when I flip it back to portrait.
After the ERE27 update, I've only really noticed the issue when I've plugged in the charger.

now that I think about it, I must say that most of the time I see this happening it has been on the charger... will test later though, i doubt this would effect the issue
I think it has something to do with live wallpapers, the ones that receive input touch to react in some way or another. Its a software issue.
You could put it to sleep and on wake up its ok.
Or you could touch the buttons slightly to the right.

no its not the live wall papers... I have tested both with and without live wall papers and I can produce identical results as far as loss of calibration
Not sure if its the same problem but when playing games sometimes, the isnput locks up sometimes when in landscape mode. However rotating the phone between landscape & portrait mode seems to fix the problem, might help for this too.

Phone randomly stops sleeping

My phone will randomly stop sleeping, this has happened pretty much since i've gotten it.
I will launch spare parts, running near 100%. Check partial wake lock, nope nothing. And nothing under any of the other menus in spare parts that would indicate it not sleeping. This will occur after a couple of days even after installing no apps, restarting does not fix, neither does pulling battery. It will just start happening and only way to fix is data reset / factory wipe until it happens again, but when it does start happening I might've not even be using it at the time.
Okay, i did actually finally fix it after months without factory reset, it appeared to be when 3g and Data-always enabled was ticked.

If this fixes my no sleep problem, I will name my first child after you.
I've been detailing the steps I've taken to resolve my no sleep issue on another forum, with the last action I took being a flash to factory ROM from huaweidevice.com, changing absolutely nothing on the phone for 24 hours, rebooting, and waiting another 24 hours. Without a reboot between charge/taking off charge, it would be 100% running. If I took it off charge and immediately rebooted, running would be more like 30% (ie: 'normal').
I'll give 'data-always' a go

Okay im unsure now, was all fine yesterday, woke up at 7 to alarm, lost 2% overnight. then just put it under my bed but now that i've woken up i've lost 18% because it just stopped sleeping again. I didn't do anything except turn it on check battery, and turn it off. So back to being confused again
Still having this problem, for example. It was sleeping fine when I went to bed then at some point during the night just stopped.
Running 64.6% 10h
Screen on 10ish% 45 minutes
Highest item with partial wake lock in spare parts is like 5 minutes, no other indicators.
This is happening no matter which ROM i try.
Considering a stock ROM with exactly 0 changes still has sleep issues, its clearly a firmware "thing".
For me, it happens after being taken off charge.
For e.g. Last thing before bed I check my running time, and its somewhere around 35-40%. Plug into charger. Take off in the morning, goto work etc, check my run time and its 100% even without the phone being touched.
For the moment I just downloaded one of the "root only" reboot widgets from the Market. Its just part of my morning "get ready for work" routine to hit the reboot widget and reboot my phone.
Its a bit of a PITA but until new firmware is released I cant see a way around it.

Hey don't know if you've tested it further than that. But its much appreciated, that rebooting after charging does seem to work . But just wondering, if you know... does it only do it when charging via usb (computer) or AC or does it not matter?
I have exactly the same problem.
I also noticed that reboot helps, but only for a while. If i want my phone to go to sleep mode when the screen is off, i would have to reboot it few times a day... Turning WiFi/GPS/Auto-sync on/off does not have any affect on this.

As per your suggestion via email, I tried the Malaysian firmware.... It seemed that 'running' time was down alot, but battery life was still pretty average. That was doing nothing more than installing the Malaysian firmware and entering my Google account - no root, no launcher changes, etc.
The lack of Swype was a bit of a downer too
I gave it a whirl from 6:30am to around 5:00pm and 'running' was right down in the 10% range, but battery was still down to ~45% over that time in 'pure' stock form. DAMMIT!
Ah well. It was a good thought and hopefully it worked for you I'm back on roadhound + the OTA update as of about two hours ago.
I'm going to scour the SGS forums and see if anything there can be applied to the U8800 RE: battery life improvements.

Oh yeah sorry, try using something like juice defender to disable 3g when screen is off or something. 3g radio keeps it running, but it doesn't appear to be, this will stop the battery drains.
EDIT: That does work but its not ideal, turns out the u8800 and the u8800h use the exact same radio so im not sure now, don't know if there is any possible way to figure it out.

Hey guys.
This may not really be the thing you need but I was having similar problems and running 100% on without sleeping etc and came accross another forum where this was an issue (cant remember where)and as trivial as it sounds the solution for me was to go into settings/ applications/ manage applications and running applications and go down to media storage and clear the data. I do this now and then when I have this problem and it seems to help.... Maybe worth a try? It seems to be an issue with a particular media file. I also try to reboot my phone after every charge. Note that my phone is totally stock

Thanks for advice, but unfortunately this didn't help either. For some unknown reason, my running time is again 100% although the screen is off most of the time. In Partial wake usage, Android System is in the top of the list.
Oh, Android System partial wake lock seems to be a different issue, but maybe someone can help you out. Whats happening here is running = 100% yet there is no partial wake lock held. Quite unusual

Nexus 4 stuck in standby - Hardware issue?

Hey guys,
I've bought my Nexus 4 end of January (first revision) and am having a major issue since I got it:
Sometimes (once a week, first two weeks even more often) it is stuck in standby. So when the phone is turned on, but the screen is off and I try to turn the screen on, it won't react at all. Most of the time, the notificationlight is blinking.
This is totally sporadically, but I think more often, when the timer is set, to get me up (or not^^) in the morning.
It won't even react on charging or attaching it to my PC. I logged it twice, but there was nothing special in the logfile (logged it with su; logcat > /sdcard/log.txt)
This can get quite annoying. All in all, this makes the Phone quite unusable, because, without trying to wake it up, you never know if it's still running and you are reachable or if it's already stuck...
First I thought, this would be, because of some softwareproblem, but I got this issue with every ROM I tried (even stock, where I got this problem the most...)
Should I send it back to Google for RMA or do you have any idea why this could be?
Thanks in advance,
acid_g
Same problem here. Also bought it at the end of January. At least once a week the screen won't turn on, and usually there is a notification light flashing. I've found lots of other people online with the same problem, but no solution. There's a ticket for it here:
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=52926
I called Google support, and they recommended doing a factory reset, but it didn't help; a couple days later the problem happened again. So yesterday I called them back and started the RMA process. I hope the new unit works. This problem is so annoying and frustrating. You never know if your phone is going to work when you pick it up.
its called sod, sleep of death. it can happen with undervolting, and some apps can bring it on

Ghost touch issue

It seems my phone has a problem of ghost touch. The status bar slides down automatically and randomly. I turned on developer mode to see what happened, it seems, some coordinates near (320, 0) are clicked very often with no reason at all. It annoys me a lot since it interrupts my normal operation. Did someone has the same problem? And how do you solve it? Thanks
I had the same issue. top right of my screen would think it was being touch when it wasnt.
Yes, my wife's ph-1 has this issue. the ghost touches liked a bunch of Instagram posts, it was hilarious seeing my wife's reaction to this, and then she had to go back and unlike a bunch of crap posts.
But this is an issue and very serious one. I believe this could be also causing battery drain if it interacts with OS and causes deep sleep not to kick in when it should. If the issue happens again I will be contacting support to get this BS sorted out.
I have this issue on the oreo beta although it will keep touching the same spot continuously for about a minute or so and if it happens while the phones locked i cant do anything till it stops luckily its been happening less and less often
I had this happen on one phone but not the others, worse when the phone got hot
i think it's the screen, if you look closely, its not flat. Mine is kinda wavey at the edges, like there's a little too much adhesive, and i think that waviness gets worse when the phone gets hot, and causes the phantom touch

It was gone for 3 days and now the problem is back today. I tried to restart in safe mode and problem is still there so it is a system issue, not caused by third party app.
Same issue here. No rhyme or reason I can see as to why
Mine was happening on my old PH-1 without the earpiece screen, but i got the new version i got has no issue.
This issue is very annoying I'm thinking of returning the device to Sprint and getting another but since it happens so random I wouldn't even be able to show them the issue. Thought it was an issue with the oreo beta but after going back to stock I still have the issue starting to regret buying this phone
I've never experienced this issue on mine
Bump. Been happening to me on Oreo beta. About once or twice a day it happens. I just lock and unlock the phone and it stops. It's weird. I think it has something to do with the screen sensitivity. It's more prone to happening when the device screen is all smudgy or if I just washed my hands.
I have the same issue too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbHtJLQEU7o
Me too
Same issue here as well. I did the touch sensitivity trick as well and still getting it. Hope its a software issue and not a hardware one.
I haven't encountered ghost touch but encountered slow responding touch issue. Sometimes the touchscreen will respond to my command slower like 3-4 secs after i touch the screen. Every time this issue appears, a restart of my phone will clear it. Very likely software issue. I'm still on nougat, hopefully they fix it on Oreo before it goes out of beta.
My first PH-1 would become touch unresponsive for 30+ seconds all the time (it was fully updated at the time). It seemed to happen more frequently when I was typing on the stock keyboard. I eventually returned it and bought another several weeks later. I've had no issues with the new one-quite happy with it. I'm running the Beta2 update and enjoying it.

That's good to know. Mine also happened when using the keyboard occasionally as well. I have a replacement set coming as my original set's packaging did not come with the pull tab on the box and there was a fingerprint smudge at the back of the phone when i took the phone out of the box the first time. I presumed mine was a used/returned set, not new as what i had ordered. Hope the new set fixes the issue.
My phone has the same issue whenever I'm charging it and using it at the same time it's registering multiple touches when I'm using just one finger on the screen, it mostly happen when I'm doing a long press action. In developers option I have show taps enable so I'm able to see all ghost touches.
I fixed my ghost touch issue with a simple hard reset.
It will come back sadly

Using this device for 3 weeks and I've been experiencing this since last week. It hasn't happened during the day yet but at night it does. When I wake up my phone is either at the 'unlock sim card' screen when it's connected to my charger or just off and I have to boot it up. The latter is very annoying as my alarm doesnt work then.
I fear it's a hardware (battery or mobo) issue but hope it's a software one as it's happening only during the night so far. I'm in the process of unlocking my bootloader as of an hour ago and hope a clean install / flashing an older version of miui or flashing miui.eu may fix this.
I have low hopes for Banggood customer service where I ordered the phone...
Edit: please do chime in if others have experienced this or have advice on troubleshooting like logging the crashes or smth, I'm a big noob in this regard.
It happens to me randomly. No specific time of the day, but not always, its been getting frequent though. Before its like every 2 to 3 weeks, now i'am having it every week. There are also times that the phone becomes hot, not very but noticeably hot, then it freezes so I have to force reboot it. If someone out there knows whats going on please enlighten us.

Okay it seems I was pretty dumb and had the auto-schedule turned on under Security -> battery -> settings -> schedule on/off. Had it set at turn on at 00:00 and off at 07:15. However, I thought this settings was to turn on and off the battery saver mode lol. I turned the whole thing off and hope I won't find my phone rebooting at night now.
Did you find a solution? It has been happening to me too. When I am playing a game, or doing skype calls, or just randomly, It happened a few times also when I tried to use google photos, it is more and more often.

Yeah, see my comment above. For me I actually accidentally set it up to reboot. Random reboots often point to a faulty battery, possibly loose connectors.
