Updating to 5.0 and keeping root? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys
There's an OTA 5.0 update ready for my GS5. The problem is that I have root (Towelroot) and want to keep it.
From what I've been reading it looks like all root methods are either ustable of KNOX tripping.
Thanks in advance.

Same issue here
I've got a G900F - no carrier, but running on 3 in the UK anyway. When I got it, it was on Kitkat, and Towelroot wouldn't work due to the compile date being > Towelroot's ability. I downgraded the kernal as per the thread in the General section (as a note, the thread "How to root - all variants" is so far out of date, it's going to lead to people with less experience nuking their devices, perhaps we should unsticky that thread and write up a cleaner version for all the variants out there?) then rooted, and changed the kernal back to my original one.
Great - now I have a rooted, KNOX 0x0 S5 running kitkat. Now Lollipop is available and I'd like to update. So some questions on how I do this and...
1. Retain root with KNOX 0x0
2. Not trash my installed apps / configurations
I know I'll need to update via say Kies as OTA won't be available to me but if/when I update will I keep installed apps / configs? And how do I keep root without affecting KNOX?
This would, I imagine, be a common scenario and worth creating a sticky / section in an updated "How to root all variants" sticky.
Thanks everyone,
a.

Take this only as a pointer because I can't remember exactly what I read, but I think you can update to Lollipop using Mobile ODIN Pro with the Pre-Root option checked, using a stock Lollipop ROM from sammobile / XDA so long as you are already running a rooted KitKat ROM, and that doesn't flag the KNOX counter
Im new to the S5 and just gathering info myself, so make sure you check up on that yourself thoroughly first

Thanks for reminding us of Mobile Odin Pro. It's got the ability to reinject root on firmware installation and not tripping the binary counter.
Can someone confirm whether this method still works on Galaxy S5 when installing 5.0 firmware?

The last comment from Chainfire in his mobile odin thread was that it wasn't compatible yet.....but being worked on......no updates since that post.

Yep, that's what I thought as well. I guess I will have to wait a bit. No big deal.

1. I'm still on 4.3, My baseband is N900TUVUBM17, I would like to root WITHOUT tripping Knox.. Is this at all possible at this juncture? If so, what method should work? (I can follow directions, I just need confirmation)
2. I need 4.3 or 4.4 stock for when I eventually turn this phone back in for the JUMP program to get the Note 4, is there a link somewhere?
3. Are most ROMs for the Note 3, 4.3? And if there are 4.4 ROMs, can I flash those if I root my phone on 4.3? I'm interested in SlimKat mostly with Lean Kernel.
4. I heard that flashing a kernel or ROM will trip Knox, so how does one go about doing any of this without tripping it?
5. I thought t-mobile had a flash counter when you turn your phone in (different from Knox), is that true? And can it be reset? If so how?
I'm not new to rooting, and I have read these forms before making this topic. I just need mostly a confirmation on what has worked for people with the same baseband as me..
As always, thank you!!

Check This thread to see if you can root without mesing with KNOX
It doesn't matter what Samsung software is on the device when you exchange via the JUMP programme from what I am aware, so long as it's original Samsung TouchWiz
There's loads of ROMS for 4.3 and 4.4 - however the 4.3 are not updated so much now if at all - AllianceROM currently still support 4.3 and is a very good ROM - There is plenty now for 4.4 - and I mean plenty, @civato does some great kernels also and his ROM FlexKat is pretty great. - XNOTE is another big ROM for 4.4 as is Omega and SweetROM all of which are just great. You have to try them to get a feel of which you prefer though
Kernel flashing/Custom recovery flashing will indeed trip your KNOX. There is(was?) a method in the General section about how to do it safely via Mobile Odin PRO. but you'd have to read up on that.
As for the T-Mo counter, I cannot comment on that as I do not have an N900T however you can look @ the T-Mo forum for more answers which is HERE
Root De Late Vega will allow you to root without tripping Knox, provided that you do not update the phone.
After rooting you can use mobile Odin to flash 4.3 version MJ7 but you cannot update to KitKatt if you wish to keep both root and Knox 0x0. KitKatt has a new bootloader which is patched against the Vega exploit.
Sammobile.com is the place to find sock firmware. To Vega it you'll need the stock BMI7 firmware for your device to begin.
You must not flash any custom recoveries or kernels if you wish to keep Knox intact either.

[Q] Not quite sure how root, OTA and KNOX mix

Hi guys,
I have the G900F model and I'd like to root for two main reasons: de-bloat and recover SMS/MMS form my old phone (maybe this can be done without root but I don't know such app). It has stock ROM - ANE2 (CSC is AND1), knox is 0x0 and the device status is Official. OTA is pending but I haven't installed it yet. I found the towelroot thread and I'm clear how to root it without tripping knox. Several users also reported that device status remains Official using this root method. So far so good. What I couldn't find was whether after rooting I'll be able to update via OTA, or do I have to go the Odin way. In addition, will the root remain after OTA (if answer to previous question is Yes)? According to SamMobile the October update is ANH6 (CSC ANH2). It says it's still 4.4.2 so I wonder if there is a point in updating anyway. My goal is to have the latest official firmware with root. TIA

That's the thing though - if I update now I'm not sure if I'll be able to root again without any consequences. I'm not rooted at the moment so I can accept the OTA anytime. As I said in OP - I'm not even sure if the update is worth it. I read in some threads that the main purpose of the update was to patch the exploit used by towelroot on older firmwares.

You can root your phone again with framaroot etc. As same function..
The beginning of the framaroot OP states:
"!! Important !!
Success with this application void warranty on your device."
I also don't see the Galaxy S5 in the supported devices list.

[Q] Installing 4.4.4 and keeping root and Knox 0x0

Hi everyone.
I received my Galaxy s4 yesterday the c9515L variant and it came with the 4.4.2 version of android. Using TowelRoot I rooted it and now is working fine , It constantly wants me to upgrade to the newest version (I guess 4.4.4) and I wonder if i'd loose the root and if the Knox would be activated once I try to do the root again.
Also I installed Xposed and some modules, did that trip the knox?
Also, Is there any ROM available that won't trip the knox to 0x01 and having more features thatn stock? I guess to install the Rom I'd need Recovery and thus tripping knox...
Sorry for asking so many questions but as you can see I'm new to the SGS4 comunity.
Thanks.
1. Do you mean GT-i9515L? coz C9515L doesn't exist...
2. The update isn't android 4.4.4 for sure.

First of all, my mistake, what I meant was I9515L.
And, If I currently have the 4.4.2 and it wants to make a system update in "your" opinion what would that be? 4.4.2.1?? No? I though so..... thats why I said 4.4.4.
Any information regarding my questions would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Tale a look for example in Sammobile.com your updates and you will know something more of your device. It is likely that new models of Samsung using TW will update directly to android 5.0 Lollipop in early 2015 (but your device no maybe). Press "THANKS" button if the info helped you and Merry Xmas

Is it possible to use this method on a Verizon Note 3 SM-N00V? Both models have the same processor and capabilities, but I'm not sure if the locked bootloader on my N00V would cause problems.

Well yes but I haven't tested it.
The root part I can guarantee will work but I will need to update the guide for other variant with the necessary kernels which I'm currently doing but the rom flashing, I cannot guarantee will work but I can make it for all those who are
Also please note that, the Dev base rom has additional modifications done for extended battery life. The Rom that I would provide would be 100% stock. (I'm saying this because the original stock firmware needs huge battery improvements).
I will update the thread with root kernel and stock kernels for N900V ASAP.

Awesome! I'm completely find with a stock ROM, I just miss root capabilities so much!
So I need to wait for a different .zip kernel file that was made for the N900V and I shouldn't use the N9005_ROOT_Kernel.zip file you have linked up right now? Other than that, the only other file needed is the stock kernel for the N900V on 4.4.2, right?

Yes you shouldn't use the N9005_ROOT_Kernel.zip which I have provided since its only for N9005 model.
Unfortunately since I'm not aware of your model and the method provided requires a ROOT_Kernel for your variant, which I'm still trying to find.

replaced both a stock Note 3 4.4 and a stock Note 3 5.0 - no issues
have successfully replaced both a stock note 3 4.4 and a stock note 3 5.0 [both new] with this root without tripping knox method
both are working smooth and have no issues, have installed various apk's requiring root/superuser access and all are working 100% as should
did it for a bit of fun, while STILL waiting for the EE Note 3 & EE Note 4 official firmware's that were promised months ago [just in case your reading XDA Mr EE!]
so to clarify the steps, all worked, no crashes, knox still showing 0x0
cheers for all your work and testing King and thanks to all that contributed with various bits n bobs to allow you to do it!
I've just broken my Knox 0x0 rooted Lollipop ROM. I was trying to disable the startup and shutdown sounds and renamed 2 files in the /system/media folder. They were called samsungboot and samsungshutdown or something, I cannot remember the file extensions. Can some kind person please upload them so I can try to replace them via adb without tripping Knox? Or is there another way? Thanks.
EDIT - never mind, I just went for a reinstall
just to clarify. will this method work if i have unrooted stock 5.0? and installing 4.4 wont trip knox?
That's correct
Will this work on galaxy N900t
Im new here and would greatly appreciate a step by step guide to root a galaxy N900t using tmobile and lollipop. Thanx. Rob

Q: Note 3 [Apps can't save/SD card not recognized]
Hello XDA
It's my first time to post here and my first attempt in flashing a phone. I have a Note 3 SM-N9005 on Kitkat which I upgraded and rooted following the guide by XxXKINGMAKXxX. I followed to guide to the letter and have successfully gained a rooted Android 5.0 without any apparent problems. I used the stock ROM by XxXKINGMAKXxX and NOT the Alexander dev base.
After a day of using though, I started noticing that some of my apps can't seem to save or recognize my SD card. Here's a short list of some app errors that I encounter:
1. Google Earth ("An SD card is required to run this application")
2. Facebook Messenger (Unable to save image)
3. Chrome ("Do you want to replace the existing FILE in your Documents directory?" followed by saving error)
4. Snapseed (saves file but cant be located anywhere)
5. Autodesk Sketchbook (same as Snapseed)
I have tried factory reset and have reformatted my perfectly functioning external SD but the problem came back again. I have GSam battery monitor and Cerberus app installed as a system app and I use Link2SD to freeze some apps that are deemed safe by others. I use Tasker but very basic profiles only and also have Greenify but I greenify most app that I installed via Playstore only.
PLEASE HELP. I don't know what to do with this phone anymore. Anyone here who have encountered the same problem?
Link to the guide I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/development/root-guide-note-3-lte-sm-n9005-lollipop-t3093183)
I flashed the rooted Polish ROM 3 times and had exactly the same problem each time. I moved over to the Alexendr Devbase rom and have had no such problems.

So the problem is in the stock ROM? Well now that is sad. I wanted my ROM to be as close to stock as possible but with root access
Anyway, If I were to flash the Alexendr Devbase rom, where in the steps should I start? Do I need to downgrade again to Kitkat (part1 or part2?) or I will start with the flashing of Mobile Odin (part 3)? Im sorry but im really really new to these.
Thank you for the quick reply.
You need to downgrade to Kitkat, start at the beginning. The Devbase rom is pretty much stock with the option to debloat.

Can I downgrade to Kitkat and begin step 1 just by flashing the Sammobile ROM? I believe the bootloader (OB6) and the CP file has already been flashed in the process, wouldn't that be a problem i.e. create bootlop/brick ? Have you tried it yourself?
Thank you again.

Just follow the guide from the beginning, the BL & CP will be over-written when you flash the stock KK ROM with PC Odin.
Fix Possible
For all those that have had issues regarding the SDCard and Permissions. All you need to do is after you have flashed the rom. Clear your Cache, Data and then Fix SD card permissions.
All of these options are present within the Recovery mode of NOTE 3. Hope fully this will fix the problem. Fortunately, I have not faced any such problems. I have retired from this project as I have previously mentioned that I no long have a Note 3 with Knox 0x0. I have moved over to Sony Xperia series and working with other developers to make mods for it.
Sincerely,
KINGMAK

I figured out what's causing the bug on the stock Polish ROM. It seems that wiping the cache partition in recovery causes the app permission to be messed up. I've tried reflashing twice and a couple of factory reset; I get the same result after going to recovery and wiping cache. Fixing SD Permission is not available in my recovery menu. I've switched to Alexndr DevBase OEA and so far so good. Thank you guys for helping out. Great great guide.
Hey , you can do this manual by Version deodex of " devbaseAlexander ?

What model do you have? Find out in phone settings in system / phone info. Sm-g900a has locked bootloader. I think verizon's phone also has a locked bootloader.
The link I gave you shows how to upgrade to lollipop, root it and keep knox 0x0.
Isn't that what you're looking for?

my bad, you did. 900f has an unlocked bootloader. when you upgrade to stock lollipop through OTA or Kies (or odin) it already includes bootloader and modem. When you do it the way described in that reddit link you flash the lollipop firmware, modem and bootloader separately. Apparently that method of updating needs it to be done so.
Honestly I have Knox 0x1 so I never cared for those methods, btw if you live in Germany then there's no need to care about Knox. In EU we're allowed to flash whatever we want and the guarantee stays intact even if you have Knox 0x1
ps. yes =p

Do you mean ota stock firmware notification? If yes then you will have it if Knox is still 0x0 if Knox however is 0x1 you will no longer be able to update via ota.
If you want to upgrade from KitKat to lollipop you must wipe data from recovery to avoid any issues. It is also not recommended by me to use titanium backup to restore apps because some might not be compatible with lollipop yet or some of the app data made for KitKat may have a conflict with lollipop system, however lots of apps have compatibility with lollipop and there is a chance you will have no issues at all when using titanium backup. Even if I said I don't recommend restoring data after such a major upgrade I do recommend having a backup whether it's with titanium backup or nandroid etc because you're able to restore apps one by one and make sure that what you restore won't be problematic.
Edit - if you update with flashfire app, there is an option to keep root when flashing from rooted KitKat to lollipop and users have reported that that feature does work for them (I personally haven't tried it).
