+25 screenshots against Windows Phones. A WP8 issues review. - Windows Phone 8 General

Knowing how picky moderators are in these forums, I wouldn't post this here if I weren't convinced that it can be useful to at least one potential buyer, and to at least one WP8 developer.
In my review I'm not providing reasons, but facts, backed up with screenshots. Someone said that where there are facts there is no room for reasons.
Of course I'll update my review when and if I realize some of the issues I've listed prove to have some easy workaround.
Here's the link: +50 screenshots against Windows Phones. A WP8 issues review.
Hope at least some of you find it interesting.

Well you have some points but generally all the so called review is plain bs...

I also have a Lumia 925 and I've never had some of the issues you post here. For example, I've used Whatsapp AND Facebook intensely on long trips (6 hrs approx) by bus, going through places with strong and weak signals and when I got home after the trip, I still have like 20 or 18% of battery life. Maybe it's because I have at most 4 apps running in the background, but still that doesn't explain why your whatsapp and viber consume so much battery.
About the data sharing feature, I think that's carrier dependent. There are some firmwares that have restrictions in the network sharing features (mostly the ones installed by the operators) so that you buy special data sharing features from them (T-Mobile and AT&T do that). I live in Chile, and fortunately operators don't do that here, so I can share data wifi with my laptop even when I have only 1 bar of 3G or 4G signal, Never tried that on roaming though, but I think it would have the restrictions you mention.
Advertising ID is basically a "glorified" version of "do not track" feature of modern web browsers. Nothing fancy, just that.
Phone updates behaves erratically. At least for me, sometimes it takes a looooooonnggg time to do anything, and sometimes it works really fast. Don't know why though.
WiFi sense sucks. Period.
About contacts...eerrmm... why would I want to store the contacts on the SIM card, where it's limited as hell? It makes sense to store the contacts on the cloud (whether it's Google's cloud, Yahoo's cloud or Microsoft or whatever) and download them in your new phone rather than sending them via Bluetooth. When I bought this phone, I downloaded my contacts from my Google account (the one that I used with an Android phone) and it worked fine. In fact, you can save your contacts on the cloud and then access them on an iPhone or Blackberry with no hassle at all.
Map updates restrictions make no sense at all and I agree with you 100%. They should at least give the option to let that run in the background.
The random freezes and "resuming..." issue is a well known issue for some Lumias 925s and 1020s and it's being fixed by Microsoft within the Denim update. My Lumia 925 doesn't have it, but it's because it uses a Latin American firmware and its a Latin American version (although, it is compatible with the european firmwares). If you want that issue fixed right now, you can always install the finnish firmware to your phone and then download the update, because as far as I know, the finnish firmware is the only one right now that it has the fix, but it is coming to the rest of Europe soon.
All in all, it was a honest review and that is always appreciated.

[Edit] Reply deleted.

I've never had any of these problems, and most of these complaints van be explained by common sense.
Think about why they've done it that way before complaining, yes there are a lot of restrictions (it's more open than an iphone though) but that's also why it's so secure.

so if you answer to a question you do it here where you posted your "problems" and don't "force" people to read your complains elsewhere !!!

Oh, please! Do whatever you have to do, ban me or delete the thread, but don't litter it flaming with subjective and unfounded judgements. I take no sermons.

How about taking a thread closure then?

Be warned folks!!
And anyway what's the difference between "promotional" and "information" especially when it's all wrapped up in special offers - 50% off etc.
I'm not clear though whether gravejoker is just copying info from some site or whether he has some connection with the company - perhaps he could tell us, so I can offer a chocolate or weild the axe.

I totally agree, don't get me wrong I have seen some of gravejokers posts and a welcome contributor he is. Just me being a bit naughty but I suppose it highlights the issue of how people inform the community about new apps.
I guess we all like to know about new things but posters should avoid anything that sounds excessively salesman like. Now I will shut up!!

Phantasm Music Player

Updated the DBC so I've pulled the cab that was here. I don't want to post another cab since at least one person was way too confused to figure it out without the docs (5-pg PDF). But at least for that confused guy, the DBC is even simpler now.
... and then there were nine
The user guide is nice and short, too, only at 20pgs not as short as before, but it's got pretty pictures this time. Since I can't attach it on this very old post, I've made a new post and (maybe, if it works) put it there (the UG that is, since last time I didn't have the space).
i cant access to your homepage for more detail,
pls check it
thanks
Here is the homepage of the music player, if that is what you wanted:

homepage doesn't work, do you have another link?
This is so not worthy of my time.
1. Build a website that actually works. With enough screenshots.
2. Make a trial version that doesn't make me want to kill the author. Seriously? Email 4 lines of number-garbage just to test it for few minutes? Look down from your tower of babel, there are people with lives down here.
3. The moment your database configuration tool (good luck explaining that to a average user) requested for moving and rebuilding my storage card, i just cancelled everything. You might want to make it more understandable. I guess it's for telling the software where the music is.
Edit: Here, i shot a quick video of the parts that i did manage to test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZJa87Gsl1Y
Thanks for the video (I like the soundtrack! ), so I don't have to waste my... er... test the progam myself.
I love this video

btw:the sound is lovely too
Add throw-scrolling via finger/thumb (ala Iphone) and album art scrolling to this app, and I'll pay your price.

It sucks that people come out with great products like this, but then get discouraged b/c people like you post crap like this. Did you really have a hard time figuring this out? Maybe get an iPhone instead of windows mobile. It took me all of 2 minutes to figure it out and catalog all of the music on my 8525. You ask this person to look down from their tower 'cuz people have a real life and cant copy and paste 4 lines into an email (5 seconds at most...learn how to use your device), yet you have time to post a video on YouTube and even add a musical background.

Actually, we're in the same boat. If you read my past generic multimedia-related articles, I've recommended iPlay the most because of its 1, excellent CPU usage 2, groundbreaking reverb effect, which really enhances ALL kinds of content.
However, the developer, it seems, considers everyone outside the U.S. criminal... he hasn't even answered my mails where I've told him I'd pay for his stuff to be reviewed and I'm not asking for a freebie (I've purchased the full Pocket Music, both the PPC and the Symbian versions of CorePlayer and Nero Mobile Digital so that I can review them without always asking for review copies. (Yeah, it was too late when I noticed Pocket Music actually had a full-working trial version. No problem, at least I contributed to the player's future development.)) ...
All in all, I'm absolutely sure you won't be able to actually buy a copy of his stuff either - if you can't access his homepage (because, in most cases, you're outside the U.S.), then, you're a criminal. Just like me and a lot of AximSite folks. According to him, of course.
Tested the demo - indeed it's even more crippled than past iPlay 5 demos. You MUST request a trial code from their homepage in order to even make it run (to pass the initial screen - if you just close it, then, any menu operation will result in an immediate exit). This completely sucks.
All in all, it's a no-go for the Multimedia Bible either.

So I'm thinking you're either a mindless fanboy or probably the author himself using a fake username. It doesn't matter how good your software is, dude. You're never going to make any money off it because the simple fact of the matter is that you're a douche.
By the way:
PHANTSM - n. - Something apparently seen but having no physical reality
What an appropriate name for your product.

Just to let everyone something to think about...

Read this link. Read it carefully. It's not just about Google being able to run whatever code they like on your devices, it's about Google DOING it, remotely, without any user intervention/confirmation.
What's next ? Let me throw some wild and far fetched guesses...
* Applanet like apps being killed off on the devices to fight piracy...
* Anything not from the market being wiped out from time to time, for the same reason...
* Users are hunted down and being prosecuted for piracy based on their devices content...
* The system is rigged/updated to block inappropriate content, such as pedophile sites...
* Users are being prosecuted for possessing and/or visiting inappropriate content/providers...
* The "inappropriate" extends to warez sites and regular porn sites, "bad" users are still prosecuted...
* The "inappropriate" extend to the "wrong" political sites, "bad" users are still prosecuted...
* .......
I bet you get the idea. And yea, i know i am taking it too far, but still
PS: Let me add something... the builds we are running on our HD2 are often partially illegal (gaps) etc... hint hint

Also, there are terrorists under the bed, chemtrails in the sky, bromine in the water, drug dealers at the school gates, drunks on fones in cars, bondage freaks at work, human traffickers, religious zealots bent coppers paedo nursery workers racists fanatics and plain clothes Google operatives spreading FUD in forums cos its cheaper and gets more results than million pound lawsuits. Oh and bloody clowns.
Just a random outpouring,please continue.
Infx may sound paranoid, and no person of any kind of moral decency would condone anbody using pedophelia porn or any other form of content that causes any kind of harm to anyone. But those are matters for the authorities to deal with, not google. If the internet's morality policies were enforced by a huge internet based company, wouldn't that be considered some kind of a conflict of interests somehow? I mean imagine if Disney were the biggest internet company, we'd never see so much as a single cuss-word or titty. Big companies shouldn't be able to impose their own commercialized morals upon users, the internet will inevitably grow more and more watered down. I don't consider myself a paranoid person, but this type of issue stinks of denial of 1st amendment rights, one step closer to completely government/corporate filtered news-tainment, and corporate control of the masses.
Huggs, i totally agree, thata why i posted this, not because i am actualluly that paranoid (would i still use Internet if i was ?). What i tried to do in my post is to demonstrate a worst case scenario, how would google start with somethimg that should be totally accepted by everyone (fighting pedophily) yet slowly move to fighting things we no longer want it to fight (political opinions).
PS: This little remote control thing is the first step for a corporate giant to become a corporate government, a corporate dictator. And the onlu things corporations care for is money, not their users.
PPS: Just my personal opinion, feel free to disagree.

you really dont have a great deal of options
android, rim, ios & wp7 all have the ability to "spy" on their users to some degree,
mostly its just basic info such as: gps location, installed apps & how often they're used, crash logs, etc
some apps on ios have been caught out sending even more personal data. The point is, whilst i dont disagree fully with your concerns, i do see your post as somewhat hysterical.
There was no suggestion in the article you linked (or any other that ive read) that google is planning any of things you mentioned, so why mention them, as doing so only makes you a part of the current media trend of FUD as samsamuel put it.
this isnt about deny that all companies are in it 1st for the £$€, then customer welfare further down the list, im talking about being realistic. at this moment in time i cannot see google taking the path that you suggested, i also have far more immediate and real life things to focus on.
im all for a good conspiracy theory, fema detention camps springing up all over the usa (REX 84), the western so called "powers" planting the seeds of unrest in africa & the middle east so they can insert more puppets to secure natural resources (be it oil, gold, diamonds...), i could go on, but this isnt the place.
so let bring it back to google, you are in denial if you think cyber crime isnt going on, and with the rise of the smartphones we will see a rise of cyber crims trying to gain access. so i ask again who would you rather have access to your device?
if you still think or say neither, il know for sure you have lost the plot or you have taken my advice & binned your sim card cause thats the only other option you have.
@huggs, normally your post are quite informative & rational, that last post wasnt imho
no one was talking about censorship, the 1 point about google blocking access to child porn is something i would vote for, this has nothing to do with internet policing, you say thats down to the authorities, but they are not all seeing (no yet anyway) hence the use of informants by law enforcement the world wide, n thats all i would support. yes its possible that you give them a small mandate they will take it further but il worry about that IF the signs arise.
ppl who get there kick this way should have no rights, & should be actively hunted by whatever methods are available & taken out of the general population.
P.S.
Man i would love to have such a care free life that i need to start imagining then stressing about what may or may not happen, but i dont, my concerns are here & now, What you are talking about ISNT.
sorry for the lengthy post but your suggestions/posts are a subtle form of propaganda and a 1 line response really wouldn't cut it.
all the best
Kam
I say if we are doing something wrong and get caught that's our own fault.

@kam333, i may be way less paranoid than you may think, mind the fact i've posted this as a VERY far-fetched and unrealistic speculation that only got slim to nil chance of actually happening, but it does demonstrate a possibility of undoubtedly good things becoming a base to slowly advance into nasty control-it-all direction. And, yea, your suggestion about binning the SIM card won't work. I still got WiFi
@dung8604, search the net about why Cyanogen mod no longer includes Google apps.
Well, I'm running a cooked rom without a Google account set up. So I can cross that off of the paranoid list.
I can't say I'm surprised by anything written in the article.
Did a quick search and from what i can tell, only Google apps are proprietary. Nothing about the OS itself though

Samsung has NO customer forums? Really?

I just went to the Samsung site looking for their Customer Forums where could report some bugs in their latest OTA and suggest some improvements.
THERE ARE NONE.
Seriously, a multi-billion dollar company with NO way for their customers to interact, get problems solved or make suggestions. Nothing. It is inconceivable to me that in the year 2012 a company the size of Samsung would be in the stone ages of customer interaction.
Want to know how they get customer feedback? You log on and post a review of the product. That's it! No interaction, no feedback, no idea if anyone even saw what you wrote - you just post a review and pray.
Yeah you can go to Samsung's Facebook page and post something on their wall but that's not a proper forum.
http://www.facebook.com/samsungsupport
I am honestly dumbfounded at this revelation.
They do it on social media. In a pretty big way too.
Surely, in your research of the GN 10.1, you found that out - I did. They do have a question and answer area.
A "rant" is neither productive nor helpful. They don't have forums. Period.

Massive fail Samsung. It's clear from some of the changes they made in the last OTA that they aren't listening to the users.

That's probably why they don't have forums. Not enough people ranting. You'll have to forgive me. I didn't research whether Samsung had customer forums. I just assumed they weren't living in 1960.
I am endeavoring to report some bugs on their Facebook page. I have no idea if anyone else has already reported these or if there is follow-up as their "forum" has no apparent structure. Will report back if I get any feedback.
unfortunately yes.
I've been looking for its own forums few years back, and find NONE. :cyclops:
They rather use a facebook page, which we don't know the page is being maintained by who.
But, if you need a fast response, you can try their website, there's a LIVECHAT down there.
Facebook is really a pathetic idea to make it as the main forum of such a big company (in my opinion).
If facebook is being used as an additional media, then yes, it's a good idea.
Time for Mr. Peabody's WABAC Machine
For support: Not a forum and not Facebook.
Samsung needs a Web and Android App accessible Support database.
From 1979 to 2002 I was an IBM Mainframe Systems Programmer at UF in Gainesville Florida, then at the School Board of Alachua County Florida.
I watched large companies like IBM and CA move into the web era with their Support. I moved with them from phone calls and mailing fix tapes to Customer Searchable Databases with user entry for new issues, and with Downloadable Fixes for resolved issues.
Of course, way back then issues for my organization affected 10s of thousands of people where resolving an issue meant dealing with only one person in our organization.
Moving forward to today, we've got 10s of thousands of people and many, many more who all need their individual fixes. Very time consuming compared to dealing with one person.
This is one reason why more and more OTA forced SW updating is happening and why the big companies are pushing cloud computing. Such as Google evolving the Chrome platform; Adobe offering Creative Cloud; and VMWare and IBM competing for hosting Enterprise virtual computers.
Aloha.. Al :highfive:
Is it just me or do 80% of their Facebook Support moderators look like complete burnouts?
If a Forum is too hard for them how about a simple Suggestion Box where users can report bugs directly to the Design Team?
My faith in their meeting future needs with OTA's is greatly diminished. Hopefully they will surprise me.

tonyz3,
I think you should put in an application to work for the Samsung Design Team, you seem like their kind of guy. :cyclops:
They used to have customer Forum. I was a member. They were so heavily censored, that you could say virtually nothing negative.
When the Galaxy S was having GPS issues, a class action suit was initiated about the GPS problem. I posted this fact and my post was edited to eliminate the sentence stating that. My post appeared but the words "Class Action Lawsuit" magically disappeared!
Moderators would actually cut pieces out of your posts before they would appear.
I then tried to send a private message to another forum member about the censorship and they censored and blocked the private messages as well and then sent me a message saying any more communications of that type would get me banned.
I then posted a second time to the main forum complaining that they were censoring negative posts and was in fact banned from the forum. So there isn't much of a point to a Forum where you aren't alowed to communicate.
So perhaps they just decided to institute the ultimate form of censorship and eliminate the forum altogether.

Alcatel OneTouch's communication with customers

Regarding this reddit post: see attachements, can't post links yet sorry.
It looks like alcatel not only tweaked the camera and the general perfomances but changed alot more on this update. And we do not even know about it because they don't want the changelogs to be public. The guy in question is claiming he saw the changelogs but can't communicate about it.
I don't understand why alcatel would do that, why aren't they telling is what's coming and what's going on. Not even changelogs? Come on.. They're social media is all about self promotion and they don't even answer to actual technical questions.
What do you guys think about it?

If you go to that Reddit post , you will notice a response there that pretty much answers your question. It is a Chinese company , and lot of this is cultural.
So far I really like the phone, especially for what I paid for it. The only thing I'm worried about us will they update this phone. I still have some time before I have to decide whether or not to keep it or return it. This phone would be a beast with an update and some dev support.
I really wanted the next nexus but in all honesty, with these mid range budget phones makers stepping up their game it's hard to justify spending the extra cash.

They've had 2 updates to the phone in the less than 2 months the phone has been available to the public. How many updates are you expecting?

An update to 5.1 would be nice and they haven't really updated anything besides a couple software tweaks. I don't consider that an update, just maintenance.
I 'd like to see them make more responsive fixes to what people are complaining about. I've reached out to them via email and phone several times and it seems as though they don't have a good mechanism to collect feedback. It makes wonder how they decide what bugs exist and how they manage defect priorities. I home someone there is secretly reading these forums.
Their standard fix is to do a full data reset from recovery and to be honest that has fixed issues I've had after both OTA updates. I attribute that to sloppy software devs but then again its a $200 phone that targets markets in other countries.

Jason from Alcatel posted a changelog for the update in the comments of that thread yesterday:
Hi all. We are listening and thank you guys for voicing your concerns and questions. Supporting our community is obviously very important to us, and that includes making sure we're keeping you informed. We apologize for not making the fixes in this update more apparent. We’ll work to make sure you get this in the future, but here’s what we fixed with the latest IDOL 3 update (see below). We will continue to keep you updated as best we can, but as always, please keep the feedback coming. Your input makes us better.
As part of our dedication to continuous improvement, we have implemented that the below enhancements to improve the overall user experience of IDOL 3, which have been implemented on the following software release: 7SQR-UEQ0
Double-Tap to unlock Improved responsiveness to user double-tap command
Corrected Relative Aperture value (F-Stop) display Images taken with the rear camera now accurately reflect the true f/2.0 aperture
Flash Quality Improved flash quality in low light/dark environments
Incoming call notification Incoming call notifications are now less intrusive during user activity such as playing a game or watching a video
“No Service” while Wi-Fi is enabled Resolved incorrect signal display that sometimes showed no service while in good network coverage when Wi-Fi was enabled
Kill Switch Function Device will no longer show “incorrect password” on the lock screen after an untrusted master reset
Downloading Email apps with no default application Resolved an issue that sometimes caused failed email attachment downloads

Sounds like they'll be better about communication going forward!
Thanks for posting this. I did notice the correction on the F-Stop in the EXIF - so that is what they were touting as 'Camera Improvements' in the original messaging about the update. This is really not an 'improvement' , is it !
This is example of bad customer support

Seems like a automatic answer unfortunately...
Maybe contact them via Facebook ?
yeah, each of my emails detailing performance issues or suggested fixes (complaints) was returned with a suggestion to use recovery to reset to defaults. after that doesnt work the next response to return under RMA for replacement. Their tech support leaves much to be desired.
