DRM Function Restore - Xperia Z3 General

http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/xperia-z1-z2-z3-series-devices-drm-t2930672
This page contains the latest zip file to restore drm functions. All you need to do now is to do a factory reset and flash the zip,no more back and forth with firmware versions and such.
Like so many others, I unlocked my Z3 D6653's bootloader before Sony made the announcement on their page that unlocking the bootloader will result in losing DRM keys and therefore also losing nice phone features like x-reality, super vivid, low light camera algorithms, Bravia Engine etc..
After a few months of waiting, someone from here actually may have found some sort of solution (or workaround) .. view full thread here if you're interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/xperia-z1-z2-z3-series-devices-drm-t2930672
The instructions for Sony Xperia's vary.. but after a handful of trial and error, I managed to get mine to work by following this instruction from the same thread above:
Quote:

3.Flash ftf file "23.0.1.A.5.77" by Flashtool AGAIN. - Wipe appslog, cache, data
4.Unlock bootloader by Flashtool.
5.Flash boot.img "AndroPlusKernel v12" by Fastboot.
6.Install DRM restore zip by TWRP.
7.reboot.
Requirements:
Unlocked bootloader
flashtool
.77 based firmware for D6653 (I tried several firmwares but the one that worked for me was the .77 firmware for PH market downloaded from flashtool)
AndrosPlusKernel v15 (extracted boot.img from the zip to be flashed)
DRM restore zip from that original thread above (placed in sd card)
Note - Key here is to not restart/boot the phone after each step in the instructions above. Just keep phone off and unplugged after each step. I realized that leaving the phone connected in flashmode for a while will make it boot, so I just unplugged it while waiting for flashtool to prepare FTF for flashing. Then plug it in again with vol down button pressed.
Results:
Unlike my previous attempts of trying to recover DRM functions, I did not see any difference using the Album app, no matter what settings I changed in display. (xreality, super vivid etc) But after following the steps above, I immediately see changes when I change the display settings. Changing the settings and going back to the Album app, I see that the pictures will darken or lighten a bit depending on what I choose. I have yet to try Miracast or PS4 remote as I do not have any of those hardware to test.
Warning:
Now, I am not saying that this will work for everybody. It worked for me and hopefully it will also work for those who have gone and unlocked their BL and ended up with a phone with lesser features. I am not saying that you should go ahead and unlock your BL.
Notes:
If you're willing to try the steps, you may want to thank the original thread starter from the link above. Also, please post feedbacks here and give info of what version of Z3 you are using. The original thread is a bit of a jungle with all Z users posting all sorts of info.
I am not taking any credit for the instructions or tools, just merely passing information along to my fellow z3 users.

The drm function has also worked for me on. 77 firmware.
Thanks mate taking your time to post instructions for others benefit

As of the moment, there is no way of unlocking BL without losing drm keys.

So I have to unlock, lose my drm Keys then follow this steps to get it back?

This is NOT really restore DRM !
Once you UL all DRM will be destroy.
This only copy a patched drm lib so the drm function work again, so drm "function" restore.

Ok. So how's the low light camera?

Any way to compare DRM vs. patched DRM?

Due to it being unique for every device, it will always compare differently.

I have seen this a couple of days ago, I was actually wondering if Remote Play (PS4) gets restored as well. I know it is not specified in the patch thread, but would be the only feature left out from this fix! Has anyone tried to use it?

do we really need AndroPlusKernel v12 kernel for this?

I can confirm PS4 Remote play doesn't work after doing this, it still shows C-80F80A01 error.

Mine also after doing this. All other features are pretty much useless for me. X reality and super vivid only works using the stock album but i use third party aps to view pictures. And i dont take pictures at dark places. It is not worth the effort if you dont use these features. I want the remote play fixed

After numerous tries i finally successfully restored DRM functions - the trick for me was to not turn the device on.
Now i'm wondering, can i flash new versions of the kernel(Andro) and other flashables, without losing the DRM funcions. Should i reflash the DRM.zip every time i flash some a new version of the kernel or it's just 1 time thing?

TRACKID stoped working after ROOT/Unlock?

Hi, I noticed the TRACKID stops working on my xperia ARC. It says could not authenticate with the TrackID server. I'm on the .184 firmware with ROOT and unlocked bootloader. Any idea?
Tried both on 3g mobile network and wifi but no luck. Is that because of the root/unlock or some depend service?
I have the same problem
.181 / root / unlucked
It never really worked for me. couldn't find Internet connection while browser worked :S
I just tried to re-flash the system.img, all original system apps were restored. After that, the TrackID still wouldn't work. Anyone tested on UK original roms without ROOT&/Unlock?
works fine with root only (.181), so unlocked bootloader should be the problem
Working fine on a generic UK .184.
Bootloader still locked and device not rooted.
happen also with my phone. 181, rooted and with unlocked bootloader. hopefully someone could find a way to fix this. IMHO, trackID is a much better option than soundhound.

any idea how to make it works again? already download soundhound again but i prefer to use trackID.
Hope someone can sort it out. If this is due to the lack of DRM KEY, is there any idea to recover/bypass it? Thanks.

at least it works!
I've got the same problem. There no possibility to restore the drm key ?
Lol noobs, it wipes your DRM keys and you can never get it back. Ever, EPIC FAIL!
However, if you did your research you could be like me and pay a small amount to one of the guys on the forums here with SETool and have an unlocked bootloader + working TrackID.
But if you already unlocked the official way, there is no way to restore the keys, it's gone for good.
SoundHound is better and works with unlocked bootloader.

I dont understand the way you address the random people posting on this thread, it is clear that they have no idea why TrackID is not working for them,do not use your myopic attitude on public forums where constructive answers can lead to easier problem solving.
To all the people that are having issues with TrackID after unlocking their bootloader, it is impossible for you to get your DRM keys back after unlocking the bootloader of your phone from the SE website.
Nope. The apk is tied to your phone's serial no. or imei. Copy the trackid.apk off your original rom and it should work.
Just confirmed with my Xperia Play.

Unlocking the bootloader wipes the DRM data of the device. copying trackid from anywhere wouldn't result in getting the DRM keys back.

About goroh_kun & huhka_com exploit on C6603 / 10.1.A.1.350

Hello everybody,
As i don't have enough messages to answer on the development thread, i post a few information here.
On my Z bought on a xperia store (lock bootloader but unlockable, french version (I think it is a worldwide one...) ) i runned the exploit, and it do work!
But as some comment said, the NFC stopped to work (only bug so far...).
The error is simple: you can't 'check' the box in configuration.
The logcat is simple and say only a few information:
I/NfcService( 1102): Enabling NFC
E/NFCJNI ( 1102): phLibNfc_Mgt_ConfigureDriver() returned 0x0106[NFCSTATUS_INVALID_DEVICE]
W/NfcService( 1102): Error enabling NFC
I don't know if i can help. But here are the few informations i have =)

No, wont help. An unlock blocked bootloader is locked for good. No way around it and I judge from your post, you dont read other threads so you have no idea whats going on: Sony - as other manufacturers did and do - didnt compromise Qcoms security installments in place by poorly engineering the phone. Bootloader security barrier most likely wont ever be broken through.
How exactly do you remove a directory like that?
Use root explorer.. Worked like a charm
I didn't remove it I just renamed it to usf1 it worked! But there are a lot of files in that folder. Is it not important?

I take it your talking about official bootloader unlocking? Coz obviously a dev might work out how to unlock a bootloader using other ways which would mean a blocked bootloader can be unlocked.

Hi everyone
I'm new at this root things so I would like to make a couple of questions if you don't mind...
I have a SIM Free UK Xperia Z, so I think my bootloader is unlockable. The thing is I don't want to do it (at least for now) because I will loose DRM keys, BE2, and my warranty...
1- Can I root using this method without unlocking the booloader?
2- If I root my phone with this method I mantain my DRM keys, BE2 and can restore it like when it came from factory?
Thanks in advance

I covered this in my initial post: recognized elite Android god Entropy512 himself, stated repeadetly, that bootloader security on Qualcomm devices is very strong. If it gets broken (this is what you ask/hope for) then it's usually because the manufacturer ****ed up Qcomms security. Sony, so it seems, does not have done that so an "unofficial" unlock or "bootloader crack" is very unlikely on the current devices, such as the Xperia T and Xperia Z.

Make sure your file explorer is configured to access system directories (such as /data) in root mode. You may need to change a setting to enable root access.
/data is definitely not empty, it's filled with plenty of other stuff.

It uses the test point method to unlock your bootloader, it also has a option to backup/write/restore your phones TA file (not 100% sure what this does, but if you mess up your TA file you almsot 100% screwed) and there is an option to flash FTF files and to select what you want to flash from an FTF, think Flashtool but Plasma is an all in one. I am actually really liking it... thin I will use this more then flashtool just for what it offers. If you are going to use it you should jump on it as the list of username/passwords on page 23 in the link by ATTACK (the GSM link) are limited to one user, so if the username/passwords dont work you have to wait until the OP on that thread uploads a new list of credentials.

I do not know what loopys version or process if for unlocking your bootloader. What I can tell you is that Plasma Tool unlokcs your bootloader via the test point method, paper clip. But as I am unlocked and have been for about 18 months....

That I am not sure of, it does clearly have an option to unlock your bootloader but it is via the testpoint method, as I have never had to do touchpoint to unlock I dont know if it will unlock the fastboot mode....
if someone knows please let us know.
I can't speak for what this tool does, but I had Alejandrissimo unlock my bootloader after I got my phone (late 2011). He unlocks using a SE Tool for which he has to purchase credits and it involves the testpoint thing with the paperclip connecting the contacts found underneath the sticker underneath the battery.
It unlocked the bootloader and gave me fastboot access. I've never had to include the "-i 0x0fce" option on the fastboot command line either, like many instructions I've seen tell you to do. (ex: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_zeus - for me the commands work fine without the "-i 0x0fce", not sure if this is the case for others or not)
From what Alenjandrissimo's information told me, this method of unlocking preserves the Trim Area, which contains special DRM information for certain Sony apps. Unlocking the device other ways will often wipe the Trim Area and then you won't be able to use some Sony apps/services... that said, I'm not even sure if this is still a thing and don't care to depend on Sony too much for apps/services anyway, so I'm not sure there is much value to this.
I am interested in that it sounds like this tool can be used to read (and thus backup?) the Trim Area? Not sure I care that much though.
~Troop
I backed up my trim area. Bur went to setools forum and saved several xperia play trim area files as well

So, what do you guys think about this update? Is it really worth it? Curious to know.
The biggest reason for me to change was to get Remote Play to link with my PS4. Also, the applications button is now shifted to the middle of the bottom edge. Other than that, I haven't noticed any huge changes that blew me away.
Remote Play is pretty cool though, tried it out for a little bit last night and it was good enough to play Call of Duty campaign mode.

Well, technically, it's not such a big deal, to swap kernels/ramdisk with an unlocked bootloader. It's a simple edit. But, at this point, it would mean unlocking bootloader, and losing DRM keys (still not sure what functions besides some lost advanced camera functions, not that anybody uses the camera anyhow except for skype).
Under the old rooting, it used an exploit to modify ramdisk, (and install the necessary apps), without unlocking bootloader via an exploit.
As for me, I will wait a couple weeks and see if there's a new exploit. If not, well, I will do the above method.

Basically DRM keys are used to see if you have unlocked the device (in the past). So mainly for Sony to check if your warranty is still valid.
There is a tool that will backup your DRM keys though, and can restore it too. You just need root for that (just downgrade, root, backup keys and upgrade again) Just Google Xperia DRM backup and you're bound to find out

Searching For Root..

I've had this phone a little while now and I'm itching to root it. There's nothing wrong with it, I just really want to get into the code and do some modding. But there doesn't seem to be any root solution available right now.
So I thought I'd start this thread so we could discuss any rooting tips and ideas you all might have.
First I should probably mention all the potentially dodgy rooting solutions out there. Google "root xa1" and you get many results that offer methods to gain root access on our phone.
I confess I haven't tried any of them but that's because they all look suspicious. Some were written before the phone launched, some require you to download unknown software (I'll keep my PC virus-free, thanks), some even go so far as to feature a fake comment section with people saying it works.
I have no desire to stick malware on either my PC or my phone so I'm steering well clear of those.
The XZs launched at the same time as the XA1 and there seems to be a solution available for that. This is a thread by @zlRampageSlz with details: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xzs/how-to/tutorial-step-step-guide-to-gain-root-t3612624
It looks like the best solution is to unlock the bootloader (making sure to back up your TA partition first!), flash a modified kernel (otherwise the camera takes green pictures), flash a recovery image and then flash Magisk.
Where do we get this modified kernel? Where do we get the recovery image?
I have no idea, sadly. This is all way beyond my area of expertise. I'm a themer, not a developer.
But if anybody knows better than me, please post here.
This is a great phone, let's work together so we can get it modded!

First of all thank you so much for your awesome tool "Tickle My Android" which i really like it (Y).
i'm about to get XA1 Ultra so sure i'm so curious about root also but i'll try to make it clear,
simply, don't waste your time searching for a root tool because it's impossible to have root without modifying kernel, so, 100% all of these tools are just malware !
in the new devices there's something calls DM-Verity which is a check tool and that means any modification to /system will leads to bootloop,
so DM-Verity must be disabled ( through kernel of course ) & any mess with kernel means you have to unlock bootloader.
another thing, Sony ric which is prevent mounting system, so, any modification must be through recovery or it will leads to bootloop also, so we must also disable it.
fortunately on my xperia z2 there is no DM-Verity and there's a module to disable sony ric through recovery so root was possible without unlocking bootloader but starting from xperia z3+ DM-Verity appeared !
so now root is impossible without unlocking bootloader ( which means losing drm keys forever if you didn't back it up ).
i downloaded the firmware for xa1 ultra through xperiafirm and i unpacked the kernel and tried with these tools to see how its going on:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp...oot-automatic-repack-stock-kernel-dm-t3301605
&
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/poc-real-trim-instead-drm-fix-t3552893
the first one was hanging and i didn't get any information & the second one to be able to use it then you must put your ta.img ( your ta backup ) inside the folder,
i used my z2 ta.img as a test to see the process and the result was pretty good !
i successful disabled DM-Verity and there's no sony ric !!!!! but it's also still not safe and needs to be confirmed because maybe there's a bad surprise which is not clear yet, maybe something like sony ric but new !
so, if it's only the ****ty DM-Verity it's easy to disable it even away from this tool because we can't use it without ta.img, maybe by any script or unpacking kernel and modify it then repacking it this is not a problem at all & after that MAYBE we can flash supersu or magisk via ADB since there's no recovery yet ( completely not sure about this so it needs to be confirmed ) & in this case the choice is between root or drm features but at least root has been achieved.
so now, we need something like this to be able to backup ta without root and after that no problem of unlocking bootloader:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/universal-dirtycow-based-ta-backup-t3514236
or
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/iovyroot-temp-root-tool-t3349597
or if it's not possible at this moment to backup ta without root then at least we need something like this to be able to to reactivate drm features such as camera denoise and x-reality...etc:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/xperia-z1-z2-z3-series-devices-drm-t2930672
or
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/sony-credentials-restore-unlocking-t3296383
or the worst choice...root without drm & waiting for a fix like those above !
anyway, root is not easy like before but it's still possible after all, i tried to clarify everything as much as i can and i hope there's a solution soon !
@munjeni we need your help bro, please if you have free time have a look, i uploaded the kernel for xa1 ultra so try to tell us how it's going on & what is new !

good luck for everyone .
As my Z5 compact was broken, I bought the XA1. I didn't remember, how awful an unrooted phone is - So I am also waiting and would be very interested to be informed.

I haven't, personally. Every mention of it I can find just looks like an advert. And I'm not paying for something that might not work and might do something horrible to my phone.

bought this phone to replace my oppo. i can't wait for root abilities to be made
Bought this phone to replace my old Xiaomi. It's a good, powerful phone. Hope to see root appear for it soon. Personally for me, I'm one of those people who will only root a phone once it gets slow (the warranty expires). So as much as I'm reluctant to root my phone now, I'll hold out and see what wonderful developments appear on this thread.
Given the XA1 (I have the XA1 not the XA1 Ultra, I believe they are different) runs a Mediatek processor, I'm inclined to see something along the lines of a MT Flash Tool being used. Correct me if I'm wrong but I've only had successful flashes and roots with Qualcomm processors. The last device I had with a Mediatek processor (Lenovo A8-50 A5500H, MT8382) bricked on me horribly and I had to throw it away :crying:.
Meh. Hope we'll see awesomeness come soon from here. I'm still pretty new to XDA, looks like an awesome community

Hi. Wondered if I could ask advice. When trying to unlock bootloader using Sony website via a code. After entering the command with the code it says command not allowed, any ideas?

Yes. It gives the full command with the code on the Sony website. So I copied and pasted it from there. It does say on the phone in the service menu under bootloader unlock able = no. But says yes on the Sony website so not sure

Go to Settings > About Phone.
Tap on Build Number until you get a toast notification that says you're a developer.
You should now be able to access Developer Options in Settings.
Go inside Developer Options then toggle OEM unlocking. Make sure it's on.
The code you get from the website should work now.
