Nexus 7 Dash install - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Couple of weeks ago my Pioneer DEH-3500UI head unit and about 32gb worth of SD cards got jacked, so I figured it would be the perfect time to install a Dash Tablet, and also make it theft proof by doing a completely removable design.
So, lets just go through some of the items of this build.
The Vehicle is a 1992 Chevy S10 Tahoe, that's got about $7,000 worth of upgrades already (I'll post a link for those if anyone is interested)
I'll be using a Nexus 7 LTE tablet on T-mobile since 5gb data is only $10 for me.
for augmenting the truck I'll be using a Scantool SX OBD-II adapter with Torque pro, at a later time I'll be integrating an amp to power my existing Pioneer A-series speakers, And possibly a backup camera at a later date.
The mount will consist of a RAM cradle, mounted permanently to a plate that will function as a mount surface and a cover for the headunit.....hole.
I'll also be mounting Two RCA jacks and USB ports on the plate so if I decide to remove the tablet completely I can also easily remove the external wires mounted to the RAM cradle, which I'll mount a Micro USB plug and a 3.5mm Jack to the cradle that will connect when the cradle is closed with the tablet in it.
I don't have any pictures yet, but I'll get some posted up in a day or two, Tablet and the main install parts SHOULD be here Monday.
And for those interested, Here is a link that explains why there is so much $$$ and WHY I'm using an OBD-II Adapter on a 1992 vehicle :silly:
I'm a link

So I read this and my first thought was "Over $7 grand in a truck worth $700? Dude has way more money than brains." Out of curiosity, I followed the link and read all 23 pages of that thread, and now I just think you've got more passion than brains...or you're a glutton for punishment. Either way, I salute your dedication. I've got a laundry list of things I want to do to my 2008 Envoy Denali (getting Android in there being one of the main ones), but I always end up putting them off. So good on you for actually following through on some of your crazy ideas. I've subscribed to this thread and I'm anxiously awaiting how this will turn out for you.

I'll take more passion than brains any day lol
Quite honestly though that thing started life out just to impress someone, what it's turned into is a money pit and my baby.
I mean it's like a Envoy XL and a Syclone had a baby.
Putting a tablet or something would be much easier for a stock looking install in your vehicle since it's a double dinn. Mights actually be pre-made bezels.

I think the biggest issue I'll have is the wood grain trim around the radio, which is the only reason I don't have an Intellilink/MyLink with Bluetooth in there already.

Just curious, because I'd like to do a nexus install myself...
What software are you using on the Nexus to get this to work as I've seen that timur is charging for his usb/in car kernel.

I'm using Lollipop 5.0.2 + ElementalX 3 Kernel which has OTG charging, S2W and DT2W
Other than that I'll just be using the standard Lollipop UI, may look into some UI mods to add softkeys for volume and what not, but for a non integrated headunit it should be fine without a fancy UI overlay.

[PSA] The OEM Universal Dock Scratches the Back Cover

I just noticed this on my Note. It's not bad and you can't see it unless you look for it but I'd imagine it would get worse over time.
Here's the problem. The Note moves as you're using it in the dock and the stand is hard plastic so it leaves abrasions.
Here's the fix (from Lowe's)
I use the OEM dock and am not seeing any abrasion, yet, but thanks for the tip.

I use it also and don't see any but I think I will apply these just to be safe. Thx BH
What is the universal dock capable of other than acting as a stand? How much n where can you buy them from?
I have three of the docks and my Note spends a lot of time in them. That may be why I'm showing more wear than you guys.
I got mine at MacMall for $29.99 all in. Shipping is free and 2-day if you belong to ShopRunner. It's pretty much a stand but it has a 3.5MM out jack to plug speakers in to it. The old docks were made to fit each size tablet and provided better support. The new one also has the Note sitting pretty upright compared to the old one. Demandarin, BB has them in stock in Alexandria for $34.99 if you want to see it first.

got mine at best buy and also use an HDMI plug which i piggy back to the back of this. I pretty much do all of my charging on it and moovie watching as well as listen to my music. It was about $35 at BB. I think the HDMI was about $22 on amazon. I will look for a link.
I went and got a notebook 'skin'.. those lightly adhesive decoration sheets meant to put on the lid of laptops and netbooks and carefully cut it to match the Note and stuck it on there... mainly because I'd heard so much about the Note's back being 'soft'.
So the dock would only scratch the sticky.
My biggest complaint about the dock is that you can't charge AND sync at the same time. It would have been nice to have a USB connection on this too.
Since no ones mentioned hdmi output in any of these docks, im assuming because there is'nt one, but just incase, does anyone know or own a compatible note dock with hdmi output?
HDMI would have to run through the charging port via a dongle so a charging dock won't do it without an additional adapter. Any other type of dock you can just flip the tab over and use the dongle.

Ok my mistake...the HDMI was $27 at Amazon. Link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0059UGT1K/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
and i plug it into the back of the dock above post from Best buy and you can charge while using the HDMI. Infact this dongle will ONLY work if you are charging at the same time....
I've been using the universal dock as a stand for about an hour a day and haven't noticed any scratches, but thanks for posting this! I'll keep an eye on mine. I got the dock at Best Buy (at the time, they were about the only ones locally who had it in stock), because the regular stand I was using didn't accomodate the thin-ness of the Note very well and I was afraid of it landing on the floor one day.

This is the way it is in 4.2 onward. Google is unifying the look so it functions the same no matter what screen size (like everyone's favorite fruity rounded rectangles). It's Matias Duarte's vision for the UI. Personally, I have no real issues with it, and I'm sure CM or AOKP will bring back the old functionality.
I read somewhere that android 4.2 changes something in the render script. I know that this changes somehow the performance of 3d, does someone knows if this can relate to our egl leak? If yes, how does it affect performance and the random reboots we have been having?
Thank you for the efford random blame, as always I love your work, and I would donate if my stupid wall art debit card would play well with PayPal. As soon as I get another debit card you and the amazing quarx are going to have a beer from me.

My review on this product is basically this.....
This product is amazing in every way it's described. Small, portable, lightweight, lots of energy, and can charge anything.
It comes with 2 ports to charge (can be used at the same time), and 1 port to charge the actual battery.
Can charge my iPhone more than 6 times....I have not been able to test it efficiently, but it works, and it works well!
How to describe this product....
Think of an iPhone 4 in a Otterbox. Now imagine it was a bit longer like an iPhone5. Now imagine that it looks like an iPhone, yet there isn't really a screen, it's just for looks. Now what you do is you put this charger in your pocket with your phone when it's getting low (or in the car, in a bag, purse, whatever), and than you instantly have POWER IN YOUR PANTS.
I've been questioned....why do you have a wire coming out of your pants? How are you charging your phone while walking around? What type of magic is this?
On a more serious note...everyone phone dies...everyone wishes they could charge their phone while moving, and they also wish their phones would never die. This device does that and more.
It's programmed to charge iPhones and Androids faster than normal.
It comes with a ton of connectors to charge tablets, all phones, laptops, and basically anything I can think of.
for $40...it's a steal. Buy it, you'll love it. Thank me Later ♥
My review on Amazon is very basic, and lists the only two flaws I saw....
1) The iPhone connector will unattach itself from the provided cord that comes with the device. I think the same applies for Androids, and tablets. I suggest using the standard cord your device comes with to connect to the external battery.
2) there's a lot of important attachments that come in this very small bag, and all the pieces are very small. None of them are really needed besides the USB cord to charge the battery, but I wouldn't want to lose them, and yet they are so small...I likely will. Wish there was a small zipper in the protective pouch it comes in.
Conclusion:
★★★★★/★★★★★ (A universal product that should be owned by everyone)
Cost: $25-$40...I suggest buying the largest one, simply because it's an amazing deal. I bought it for $50 not too long ago, and it can be a life saver. (Think about the shows where you get lost in the woods, and your phone dies) ^_^
Edit: basically changed my review on amazon to this. Hope that's alright with you guys.
where is the link for this thing or even a name for it to buy? i am not seeing it. sorry if i missed something.

Modded my Note II to do wireless charging

Hi guys,
I just got done modding my Note 2 to do wireless charging and I'm extremely happy about it!
It is super easy and simple. Unscrew the back, solder copper tapes on the terminals that already exist.
It would have taken me 5 minutes if I had a good soldering iron... Mine sucked really bad (the tip wouldn't heat up right) so it took more like 10 minutes.
Here is a Youtube link to a nice tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDSyjl_2CXo
Here is a cheap wireless tag + charger for Note 2 from China for $50. Took 2 weeks to get here. (Cheapest I could find for both coil and charger) It works great. Charging distance is 5mm and output is 1000mA. Not fast but good enough.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/170995097433?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
When you get the wireless tag you just need to heat up the terminals and take them off. You can leave the terminals on, but it's pretty thick, adds about 1-2mm of thickness so you'll need to buy a bigger cover to use it without taking them off. Tutorial here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5bnenaI86I&feature=youtu.be
The wireless tag adds very slight bulk, maybe a slight curve where it bulges out the most, but the regular backing will close and it's barely noticeable. Especially since I use my Note II in a case I won't ever see it. It may bug some people that don't use any case or cover.

Here is my Note II charging.
I found that wireless charging on a flat surface was actually too big of a hassle... I had to position it right and trying to operate the phone while charging was difficult because it would slide off.
This was what I had in mind when I did the mod, to have it in a stand. I had a Belkin Flipblade stand, so I put the charging plate there and now all I need to do is slip the phone in it. (I had to attach some stuff in front to keep the Note from sliding off the stand as you can see)
I did this mod because I wanted to be able to sit in front of my desk, slip the phone on a stand which will automatically start charging, and listen to music through my Logitech speakers wirelessly. (Bluetooth audio receiver is on its way as I write...)
Charging plate
This notification pops up every time I put the Note on the charger. I'd like to get rid of this notification but I don't know how... No big deal, though.
Also another thing is, keeping the screen on while charging option doesn't work with wireless charging and this really bugs.. I guess I'll have to do some search to do this.
Anyway just wanted to show off..
looks great, i have the same charging pad, let me try diy a dock station with that like u!
Also I downloaded Tasker to keep screen on while charging. Works like a charm!

CTRLR holding a 7" tablet

Hi guys,
Been wanting to do this for a long time
Here it is... what a bad boy!!
The tablet is a cheapish chinese mali400 2GBram with hdmi out (hyundai T7s) , I bough instead of the ouya, sooo glad I did to, definitely getting my monies worth!
I got the same apps/emulators setup on here as the MOJO.... obviously it doesn't play as nice, but does okay
Been playing N64, MK4 is smooth, GE 007 and Dest. Durby both playable but laggy (9-30ps).
It's kinda heavy holding it, close to 1kilo as a guess.
It's not to bad if upright and balanced, but when angeled the weight of the tablet is noticeable.
Overall, feels comfortable with the controller, like in front of the TV
It's sturdy but there's a tiny bit of play at the bottom, even with the screw on tight... it's really testing the CTRLR's build quality here! lol
This is da shiz! Very cool,
I did photos as I put it together.. it's just fine rope and a small L bracket with tape wraped around it.
I'll blog it one day soonish..

Hi,
I've finished my blog post about how I made my 7 inch clip.

I update it with the support bracket info.

After using my 7” tablet with the CTRLR, I started to wonder why the CTRLR weighs so much?
So I decided to open it and see.

Only with an OTG USB cable, right now (unless you have the unlocked, developer or Google edition, in which case you're fine). As soon as you get the KitKat update then you'll be able to sync directly.

So I guess it will work. I want to connect phone to TV using MHL and pair it via bluetooth and have a mini console
Also where can I buy this from?

Can you disable the screen while on MHL? I hear there's performance issues with even mirroring to mini/micro HDMI?
But yeah that will work.
The retail version controller will be BT2 and BT4 so will work on "any" android/PC device and includes the travel clip
Not sure when it will be out, I hope soon I want another one :fingers-crossed:
I guess on amazon and newegg etc
I don't think they will be cheap either, over $50 for sure.
