[Q] Help rooting NK2 - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody rooted NK2? My Galaxy S4 Developers Edition phone was stolen on a recent airplane flight (fell asleep and when I deplaned the phone was missing) . Assurion couldn't replace the phone so they sent me a new S5, but it came with NK2 installed. Waiting for a Nexus 6 to purchase...

Its been out about a day I believe... Hopefully we'll still be able to root this one using the same methods from before. You can try if you want.

If the bootloader has not been incremented, we'll be able to regain root on NK2 once there's an ODIN flashable NK2 kernel. So basically, I don't believe it's possible just yet.

Everytime I try to download towelroot (both on my computer and on my GS5), the .apk is blocked as a virus package.
The S5 really doesn't like the website for towelroot, and google searches for the apk also get blocked by Symantec. Has this apk been compromised or has it contained a Trojan all along?
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Wow, even Dropbox kills the file...
After I disabled my antivirus (Symantec) and tried to restore the file, I get security errors ALL OVER THE PLACE on my desktop computer.
*** UPDATE ***
Well, I was able to get tr.apk onto my SDcard and then successfully obtain root!
I don't know what the issue is with towelroot, but my clock on my desktop was reset and the internet time server could not correctly rsynch the time; I had to manually reset the time.
It's pretty scary when this happens...I don't know if it is a false positive Trojan detection or what, but I sure hope somebody more knowledgeable has reverse engineered the tr.apk and validated that it is safe!
OH Well, thanks everybody. Keeping fingers crossed!!!
I Can't wait to get a fully unlocked Nexus 6 (and hopefully prevent VZ from locking it like they try with the Developers Edition devices)!!! Maybe its time to switch carriers.

Took NK2 update this morning. Attempted to go back to NCG firware, in order to use "towelroot" to reroot. Using Odin. It failed on 3 attemps. Unless I did something wrong.

One more shot if you haven't tried already. Flash the full NCG tar from here to see if you can at least get root back and then flash the NI2 firmware. If that works install a NI2 stock or custom ROM.

Bummer. I might have got it wrong but there are a few saying it can be done. According to this post you need to flash NE9 first. Flash the NK2 kernel at the end instead of NI2 if you want NK2. Hopefully that works.

It worked for me...

Not true...I was able to root a brand new GS5 NK2 using the described procedure (with hesitation from downloading Towelroot). If ODIN is failing it means something is wrong with your flashing procedure. Try another computer/cable and make sure that whatever you are using has the Samsung USB drivers installed.
For reference I used ODIN v. 3.0.7 instead of the latest version.

Discovered why I could not Odin the firmware, that people tried to assist me. Well wish I could come up with a complicated reason why it was not working, but my own fault,
I never put phone in "download" mode. That's why it was failing. It worked now. Thanks all that helped me..

Secure Check Fail when trying to restore with Odin

Alright, so I've been doing rooting things for a long time...and never have I had this many problems. I posted something here earlier about rooting my S4, installing ROMs and having it hang on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Screen. So I figured I would try booting with Odin and re-installing a stock image. No luck. I keep getting this show up on my Galaxy S4 when I click start -- "secure check failed" and Odin shows a fail.
I don't even know where to go from here because I'm looking at an expensive paperweight at this point. Has anyone ever seen this before or even know where I can start. Any help would really be appreciated...at this point I just feel defeated.

I always get firmware from sammobile.com. Download the firmware ending in mdl. It'll be a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file from it and use that in Odin.

None available, but I suggest you use the search function and do some reading because this has been mentioned dozens of times already. The best you can do at this point is take the phone to a BestBuys with a Sumsung Kiosk and see if they will reflash it. You need to search to find out more information about it.

Sounds like it needs to be replaced (warranty or insurance), but I would try for warranty first. If it bricked for no reason at all, I assume you are not rooted and have nothing custom on the phone? Because if you do, it could prevent a warranty claim. Samsung can and will send you a bill if they find anything has been tampered with. Good luck.
You can check here...
Mind you however, that is ONLY for devices running pre-MF3 bootloaders. If you attempt to flash it as a stock recovery on a MF3 device your end up with a brick. If your on MF3 and have a brick currently, there isn't a way to go back outside of sending the phone back to Samsung or going to Best Buy's Samsung Experience Center.

This is by far your best option, use ODIN and flash these files to return to a stock MF3. Updating to anything higher then MF3 is generally ill-advised. At least for the moment...

Have you tested or seen anyone else report that the current Safestrap works with MJ6 or you can even gain root access with MJ6?
Not being rude, but please don't offer advice if you are unsure of the outcome (this means more than one person has confirmed working or you have tested it yourself). I personally don't think it hurts to make a suggestion but let the person know it hasn't been tested or you are unsure of the outcome.
Had the OP taken your advice before you were corrected, they would have been upgraded to MJ6 with no option for running a custom ROM or getting root access (hopefully this won't be the case for long).

G900V Stock On Boot Loop

I have an S5 G900V that was rooted to Lollipop. For a couple of days now, when you wake it up the screen sometimes would not work. I would have to turn the screen off for about 30 seconds then it was fine. Well, today I restarted it and now it just reboots. I have gone through odin, with a couple of firmware's for it. Really all I would like to do now, is clear the custom logo. Verizon is sending me a new one, so I dont care if it even works... Thank you for any help,

And you flashed the AO8 kernel or firmware after installing the ROM? You have to flash NK2 kernel now to get into Safestrap and AO8 when you're done. SS isn't compatible with 5.0, so you always have to downgrade the kernel to use it.

Yes, I tried both of those kernal's with firmware.... Its odd how its acting like nothing it being flashed to it. My replacement phone should be delivered today, so I guess I will just shoot some juice to it. I was hoping to at least get it running and back to stock, maybe its just not ment to happen.

Is root attainable on the D800's official lollipop update?

So, I'm currently running cloudyg2 2.2, and I'm thinking about downgrading back to stock and then taking the OTA to lollipop, but I haven't heard anyone mention if it is possible to retain root through the update process, or to obtain root afterwards. It'd be great if there was a flashable zip, but I don't know if that's possible at the moment.
You can get root again. Its a script in the development forum.
If you do this can you make a twrp backup of the stock lollipop rom and upload it? (since you'll essentially be pure stock anyway).
I'll buy you a beer

No, all on-device roots are patched with Lollipop (unless you have a custom recovery, which is unobtainable on stock lollipop for the d800 as far as I know)
Use the one that requires PC. If you run into issues, pm me or reply to me on this thread.

I'd assume you could just use a kdz to go back.
So.. no recovery as of yet on official Lollipop am I right?
Keeping that in mind, is it worth the update? Is it smoother/better?
I know this can be asked in any of the other threads, but I'm asking here with respect to its worth when compared to losing Custom Recovery.
