VoLTE impressions - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo General

First impression is that call quality absolutely sucks! I do have data connectivity while on a call and that is certainly a plus. But call quality (clarity) is nowhere near what it was before. Maybe I'm just missing a setting, or maybe it's because this is first gen VoLTE...
Thoughts?

Same here I tried it several times on the S5 I had and didn't like it at all. It sounds like the other person is talking in a tunnel or something. My wife told me to take it off her phone too. I'm not bothering with this update, the OTA is blocked on my phone. When a worthwhile update comes out I'll unblock it but until then my phone runs fine with no update nags.

On the bright side, even if you do take the update, it can be turned off in Advanced Calling settings.

True, I might take it anyways because of the other fixes but for now I'll hold off.

I agree with the comments, but the battery savings makes it worth it to me.

That is because of HD calling.
Same thing with compatible voip networks. They are crystal, moreso than landlines. We provide VoIP to clients and when we call them it makes an HD connection.

I haven' tbeen in a great area yet to see how this performs optimally, but I just had a call drop in a bad area, so I had to turn Advanced Voice off in order to keep the call from dropping.

If you are in a 3g area, 1x works again. Fringe areas are bad.

Only a couple of calls so far, but one I was told I sounded choppy. This is standing in a sweet spot at work where I've rarely had trouble. Will keep testing.

Funny I haven't had any issues and my wife has one and she sounds fine on my end as well.

I've also had some choppiness in 2 calls.
Other calls have been just fine.

If you both have it, you had HD calling.
This MASKS the quality issues.

I was in the soak, I've made over 35 calls in the last few days, only one being HD and its all fine? My office is in 4g service, but I'm always out in the middle of nowhere in 1x or 3g if I'm lucky. And everything really does seem more stable, i don't think that the audio is significantly clearer or better but I've not had any issues. I wonder why all the issues.
Wow - haven't seen you around since the incredible days!

In those cases, you are using CDMA.
Yep, I am back

Haha yea you are! Welcome back!
Understood on the cdma - the handoff is a lot cleaner and the volume seems a touch louder in calls for me. I use google hangouts ALOT while working for work, a video stream into an IDF is handy. The built in video features is worlds better than hangouts, or tango for that matter.

That though, could be there QoS optimisation for THEIR video service i guess.

It will get better.
I'm willing to suffer through it for no other reason than battery life.

Official Froyo Weak Haptic Feedback

EXTREMELY weak vibrations, go to your settings->sound->vibration intesity and feel it on max. Then press any of the 4 buttons on the bottom, you should be able to tell the difference. Anyone know a fix to it?

i wouldnt say that the froyo update release today thru kies is official or anything as it was an involuntary update and most likely not final. i'm pretty sure TMO CMO decided it was a good move to provide something to help calm furious users.
but anyways to fix this, it involves a simple code value change to those who actually know how to code.
is there currently a rom that doesnt have this problem?? last roms i flashed had this problem +others and i went back to stock
well lets get someone in here who knows the code! i've had the issue since i started flashing custom roms.
Come on baby! Lets get some heavy vibrations up in this here cell phone!

The haptic feedback is weak in every 2.2 ROM I've used (and on JL1, it was totally nonfunctional).
It was present in Eclair ROMs, but still very weak compared to what it feels like in the Settings menu (and extremely weak compared to other phones). Sometimes I miss calls or texts because the weak vibration.
Typing is a little harder with such weak haptic feedback, too...

Anyone found a fix yet? I always have a charger within reach so I don't mind the battery hit.
I've noticed that mine makes a strange noise noise when it vibrates as well. Anyone else experience that?
yeah kinda like an old super mario sound lol
Thats what happens when the phone is made of plastuc.
Yes, i'm serious.
That doesnt happen on e.g. A blackberry oe hd3, but it happens a lot on phones with plastic casings...

It's probably weaker to conserve battery but with it being like this for all 2.2 roms, it was probably intentional. Look in the i9000 forum for complaints and I'm sure you will find many suggesting that it is normal.

But its there, its not like they took out, you're the same ones that were crying about the battery life, they found some areas to improve on ...like the strength of the vibration amongst others.... what is the issue ....
I don't think the OP was concerned about his battery life, I think he was concerned about weak haptics.
I updated and have the same problem as him and and a a few other people. I generally keep my haptics set to a low level because I consider them overpowering, but since this new update I can barely feel them. Furthermore, once I go into 'settings > sound > vibration intensity' to make them more powerful I get a strange squeaking noise every time my phone vibrates and the vibrations get no stronger.
I highly doubt this happens because of the plastic construction, unless 2.1 changes what the phone is made out of.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Opinions on Call Quality?

Received my one a few days ago and other than not being able to remove the power saver notification I love this phone.
I do have one concern though. I'm not sure it's a problem but what does everyone think about the call quality? Comparing it to my Sensation it almost sounds like the person on the other end is speaking into a cup.
I haven't had a new phone in quite some time so it might just be something different.. or it might be a problem. What's everyone's opinions?
ATT version here on their network and I think it's the best call quality I've had on a phone, I've used the Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 weeks before this aswell so, *shrug*

i have spent about 70 minutes talking on the phone since i got it yesterday afternoon, didn't notice any call quality issues. comparing it to galaxy note 2, nexus 4, and iphone 4.
Compared to the iPhone 5 on iMobile - night and day. HTC is superior.
good question. There is a lot of hissing going on at times. discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2235800&highlight=hissing
Hope it gets sorted, this could possibly have the worse call quality I've ever experienced.

I had that phone and the call quiality was awesome, so it must be a problem in your device.
Assuming they are using what Nokia uses then it should be quite good.
Me too, compared with iphone 5, HTC one is realy good and loud
Thanks for the replies. When my local T-Mobile store gets them in stock I'll go in and try and do some comparisons.
To remove power saver notification just long press on the notification and go into the app info and force stop it! This will only stop the notification from appearing and will not stop anything else!

I use my phone extensively for work, and sometimes I take calls in the office (very low background noise) and sometimes in the loading bays (where there's always some sort of moving/construction/drilling etc). Today, while in the loading bay calling up a vendor, the vendor on the other side of the line commented that there were "like no background sounds" and asked me if I was in the office.
This is coming from a Galaxy Nexus, and I've been very pleased with call quality so far.

Bad Speaker? crackling... :(

Hi all. Just got my Moto X Pure few days ago. But I noticed that my speakers are cracking at certain sounds. Specially playing the ringtone "Zeta", crackling occurs. Not clear. Does not happen with every sound. Thinking its a defective in my phone. Can you test yours playing the Zeta tone and let me know. Thanks!
I can achieve the same crackle playing that tone ONLY at max volume. I tried different audio settings (balanced or bassboost or off) all crackle at MAX volume.
Thanks. But my does not matter if its in max volume. Thanks for the reply. Moto X Pure, Returning....
PS; My Moto X2nd same ringtone, NO Problem at any volume.

I posted on the official forums about this problem and already got one reply: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/c751a88e77?commentId=981431
I chatted with Motorola support and they had me run through some TSing steps: Reboot, clear cache, factory reset
The chat support couldn't look up my IMEI for some reason, so they gave me a case number and have escalated it. I should get a call in 24-48 hours.
I'm not sure if I even want to return it if this issue is widespread. No sense in returning only to receive a phone with the same problem or perhaps MORE problems.
At Max it does have some crackling but at one step below it doesn't, and it's still better than the next best thing you can get, due to it's front facing speakers. Remember it's a phone. Spend money on a wireless speaker or headphones, this isn't supposed to be your personal boombox.

That sounds an awful lot like "you're holding it wrong". I've owned a lot of Android phones and none that I remember had it this bad or even close.
If Motorola doesn't want me using the phone that loud, they should not allow me to increase the volume that much. They may simply need to lower the gain with a software update. Until I know for sure that pretty much everyone has this problem, I'm going through Moto's support channels for a resolution.
Looking at the mixers_path.XML file, the gains do seem to be rather high.

I have not tinkered with that file or the settings within before. A quick Google seems to suggest that screwing with those settings can cause similar distortion. Sounds more and more like something they'll have to tweak in an OTA.

I have had it enabled as it comes enabled by default. While troubleshooting this problem I discovered this feature and disabled the EQ in the sound settings menu. It mitigates the crackling but doesn't make it go away entirely.
Sorry if it's happening ALL the time even at low volumes but just about any speaker system cranked up to full volume will snap-crackle-pop unless you are running very expensive speakers with very powerful, clean amplification! I mean come on...can we even call what they put in a cell phone a "speaker"?? Maybe if you were the size of a grasshopper you could call them "speakers"!

So is this happening on ALL these new phones...(don't have mine yet...it's being shipped right now) or is this just happening to a random few?

Probably because it's easy to miss. It only seems to happen at max or near max volume and with only certain sounds. It might also only be 10% of the phones or something have it. It would be very easy to have one of the 10% and not notice unless you're looking for it.
It's not a huge deal at all... don't get me wrong. I'm particular about my phones though, so it is enough for me to consider looking elsewhere.
I tried to capture it on video, but it doesn't pick up well. It is worse in person. https://vid.me/tavk
Well I couldn't hear anything bad through my laptop with headphones on so I hope it is tolerable. TY
Well for me, I have to bring the volume down 4 notches so theres no rattle. Another thing I noticed is that when choosing a notification sound, between each choice, theres crackle and pop coming from my speaker. Weird. Also, rattle is from top speaker only. Seems like for ringtones, the phone uses both speakers, but only through the bottom for notifications. When playing music, even at maxx volume, i don't notice the rattle. Well, as much as I love this phone, i think I'm returning it. Since its a widespread problem, maybe the next revision, they "will" install different speaker. Guess the wait for N5x begins for me.

Thinking of Getting Axon 7

I'm thinking of getting the ZTE Axon 7 and have a couple of questions.
Where does wifi calling on T-Mobile stand? I've seem some threads with a rumor that the phone will have it with a future update. How likely is it that it will eventually get wifi calling? Any idea how soon?
I thought I read something about the notification light only having 2 colors. Is that true? That sounds like a problem. I really like using LED manager to have different custom colors for different apps.

Sounds like WiFi calling is coming soon enough then. And that's the t-mobile implementation? Wifi calling will be used for calling and SMS/MMS too, like on other phones?
4 colors would probably suffice. Even on a full RGB light it's tough to tell the colors apart more than that.

I wouldn't get the axon ..I am gonna sell mine. They didn't release factory images, if you unlock bootloader and even if you relock you can no longer receive OTA's. Cameras are not so good..battery life isn't good if I'm lucky I get 4hrs sot. The Dolby Atmos system app constantly changes from Your custom setting to the "movie" dull sounding setting if you scroll through any apps with videos. Seems laggy at times with browser. I liked the oneplus 3 far better ..charging is slower on the axon too vs the oneplus 3.

If you care about having good speakers, get the Axon. If you don't, get the oneplus. Battery has been excellent for me (consistently over 5 hours SOT over 17 hours), chrome has been very fast, charges plenty fast for most people, build quality is top notch, and mifavor isn't good, but there are workarounds to most of the issues and it's at least fast and stable. I do wish they'd release the factory images, though...
If you think being forced to use the "music" profile on Atmos is bad, just wait until you hear how bad the OnePlus 3s speakers are

What profile did you make and how? Care to share your settings.

So any time someone calls me, even with another V20, I can't do Video Chat, but I see the option available from my dialer.. Is this the same for everybody..???

This happens to me off and on. To be honest it sucks at least on T-Mobiles v20. Full signal LTE and it looks terrible half the time. Just use Google DUO. I know the built in video chat is a little more universal since you don't need an app but it's a Night and day difference by comparison

I've heard about that app, haven't used it yet though but I appreciate the input.. I always just thought maybe it was WETA rom or something, but seems like it happens to everybody, stock or not..
