I am surprised by the lack of Note Edge popularity so far - Note Edge General

Using the XDA forums, discussions, participants, and ROM/custom development as a barometer, I am surprised by the underwhelming Edge popularity.
When compared to the historical Note 2, 3, and 4 (and considering the pace of dedicated forums, ROM development, and discussion), the Edge has not nearly tracked the pace. Since release, we have had relatively little discussion, no carrier-specific forums (yet), and very few ROMs to speak of.
I would have thought that all the XDA geeks would have flocked to the Edge as opposed to Note 4. I guess I was wrong. Still, I do not understand why more people have not adopted the Edge.
Edit: At least we got root quickly. For that, I am very thankful.

It's not even released yet in most countries so that's why? The UK version I've ordered direct from Samsung UK doesn't get dispatched until 18th Dec. Online stores reckon early Jan. And then there is the price.

note edge is 399$ on 2 years contract. plus taxes, plus 40$ upgrade fee on att. that's 520$ on a phone with contract ! eBay is selling the edge over 900$. you can get a note4 less than 600$ on eBay.

But i still love my edge.

But same price as Iphone 6 Plus 64gb once you add an extra 32gb Micro SD. The Edge is not that much more expensive than other large screen devices except the LG G3 which is less than £300 Sim Free on the UK.

The comparison is to the "pace" set by previous responses to the Note platform. Any other comparison isn't applicable. The Edge is more expensive and in limited supply, so the response is slow.
If we want more support, why not start a fund to pay for it? May work depending on how many people are going to donate.

Niche device, look at how the Note 1 went, or the LG G Flex. Both started slow, both eventually had a good following though.

What carrier are you with. Dwitherell has the Tmobile edge
Sent from my SM-N915T using Tapatalk

I can assure you guys that a very impressive group of former Note 3 devs have recently confirmed (this past week) that they plan to continue their work on the Edge, and most either already have or have ordered the device
As deez mentioned, @dwitherell, creator of Tweaked ROM is among them. That news alone was enough to confirm where I'll be headed upgrade-wise, as it has with a significant percent of (xda member) Note 3 users, who like me, are incredibly glad that they didn't jump the gun and upgrade to a regular 4!
I'm personally really glad that these guys have chosen the Edge as their next phone to tear apart, since it not only seems to really need it, but it seems to have far more potential than any other current device and I'm predicting that it will thoroughly kick ass once it's unlocked!
So hopefully that gives you something to look forward to; the Note Edge and subsequently the activity / development going on in its forum will soon be making a huge jump, as will the desirability of the device (at least among xda members)! I guess if I had already upgraded to the Edge, I'd just be trying to get a kick out of Samsung's implementation of a "killer feature", while waiting for the device to be thoroughly "fixed" in the somewhat near future. Looking forward to keeping an eye on the "dev migration" and picking up my own Edge soon! :good:

I know for a fact that a few of the great devs who shall remain anonymous are heading towards the Edge. As it's already been said, with the 4 being cheaper and the Edge not being available, they are working on Note 4 stuff right now. Which of course can be ported to the Edge. Keep the faith...

I look forward to seeing what developers can do with the Edge. I can't really think of too much that I would actually use since I never rommed my Note 3. I simply used root to get Nandroids and that was it.
The Edge panel has let me drop down from 4 home screens to now just using one. With the included recents panel, the app Screen Off and Lock, and MacroDroid running I don't use the buttons on my phone except to wake the screen.

I've been saying that over and over but people saying... "it's expensive" it's not. but it has been selling out on sprint

When the edge came out I had to travel 45 minutes from my house to get it. You can check the forum on xda on the 14th of november to see how frustrated some of us were with trying to order it or get it on the launch date. Add to that samsung is really doing a poor job, marketing wise, to establish the edge brand. They are killing it with the 4. Don't get me started on the price. Lastly, I really hate that samsung touted this as a "concept" phone, not the next evolution of the cell phone or something more permanent. The phone has been out for almost two months and there has been virtually no movement on apps that incorporate the panel nor has samsung added anything significant. That is an unnecessary self inflicted wound to tje brand. Conversely, I don't need to be baited in to like the phone. I a a true believer. This phone is awsome. If I could get a few more panels, like a better notification one for texts, calls and emails and a multi-window panel I would be on cloud 9.
Hopefully, all the post in here indicate that the developers are on their way. If they arrive that is fine if not I am cool either way. Just want sammy to do their part and not abandon this great device and get us some more functional panels in the meantime.

I agree, it's $5 than a 4 if you do TMO's Jump deal. Only thing I can see is the lack of availability, I couldn't find one till about a week after release and still had to drive 45 min... but they are becoming more popular and every person that has seen mine has claimed they were going out that weekend. Right. I'm hoping, since sprint supposedly is the only carrier that currently has signed up for VR and Note 4, that they do some sort of deal on the two for early adopters.

I suspect we won't see any notifications till October. My guess, the phone will probably release around mid-October and they'll start preorders about two weeks prior to release. The good news is that since Samsung has a page on the variant and a model number, It probably going through the FCC review, if not already, and supports an October release.
As the VR headset, I'm not sold on it. I think it'll be interesting device, but I think it'll be very limited in support. I just can't see it having a large enough install base to make it popular for a lot developers to devote time to develop or modify applications for it. And the $200US price tag seems high for a device that may so limited. It's only usable, as we know thus far, just on the phone. No external power source, so just your phone's battery. No way to use with your PC for those games. In fact, there was an article I read that showed that getting an Octulus for the PC was cheaper than the Note 4 and VR. If they throw it in free, I'll get one. If it was $50 or less, most likely, over $100, not likely.
Plus, I wonder how the VR works. I have issues--lazy eye and colorblindness--so I have no idea if it'll work for me. The new 3D technology does not work at all for me. I have 3D TV and Playstation3, and got the active 3D glasses to check out. The 3D did not work at all. I only saw a lower resolution picture since the 3D tech uses one's cross reference between the two eyes to create the depth perception. I use one eye significant more over the other. There's a reason why I've taken a few baseballs to the throat; yes it hurt. So, on the top of the support, you can understand my skepticism for my own potential experience with it.
I'm actually more curious about the S Gear in regards to the US or Sprint. I think that may be more a more useful device. I would have preferred it to run Android, or Android Wear. I like the hardware it's bringing, and hope it'll bring manufactures to do similar. My other concerns with it, will it work with devices that do not have TouchWiz? What about the glass? Is it crystal like a good watch, or some kind of gorilla glass. Watches tend to get scratched if they're any kind of glass. If they have some kind of bundle where they offer the Gear S on the cheap side, say about $100, I would probably go with something like that.
Ah, it's exciting times for new toy(s).

It'll probably work for you since the device shows both eyes live feed (no shutter/no anaglyph). Also there are a bunch of programs that allow you stream PC games to the phone. They are not samsung supported/designed products but they do work (TriDef3D for example, there are also a bunch of android games that support the splitview 3D) I currently have a note 2 and built a custom "google cardboard" vr headset and it works great but the resolution is not so great. So, at least for me, I am accustomed to this type of headset and enjoy it quite a bit for games like Skyrim. In short, you can do everything with an android phone (any of them) that you can do with the Oculus, as there is software and hardware (DIY for most, but we have Galaxy VR now) that supports it.
Also, all US variants of the Note 4 have passed FCC as of a few days ago.

that is excellent news. I hadn't heard Verizon and a couple other hadn't going through yet, but ATT and Sprint had.
And if what you say is true about the VR and my vision, that would be excellent. There's nothing like handing over the 3D glasses to my mother and asking, "is this working? Do you see a 3D picture" And her response, "yes, and it's so cool. wow look at the sky.." it should be noted, this has been the case with most 3D stuff such as 3D rides. The old 3D tech with the blue and red paper glasses worked a little bit, but I've never had that in your face image coming out of the screen. The sad part, if it actually works and does so well, I would probably buy just because of that fact.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here, I'm just going on what I've observed in the past. I've never noticed any savings during holiday season/black friday on phones (maybe the lower end / not as popular ones to get more subscriptions) but the newly released high-end phones usually don't get discounts (the year old Note 3 probably will get a liquidation price). I thought that's why manufacturers released phones around this time of the year is because people "have money" or are willing to spend less frugally than other times in the year, meaning full price on the phone. If you're buying the phone without subscription discount (~$800), the full price/non-contract phone might be discounted during the holidays.

I don't believe it is throttled. The framily plan doesn't exist anymore. The new family plans are called family share pack and they have a bucket of 20gb that you share so not unlimited.
The quickest way to swap phones on sprint is by logging into your account and entering the imei of the new phone. Takes just a minute or two but not as simple as swapping sims.

Could it be true...

Yesterday, I stopped by at T-moblie store and I happen to ask the salesperson there, of the three phones, Note 4, Edge, and Nexus 6, which is selling the most? He said, surprisingly, that they are selling more Note Edges. Don't know it that is true and if overall sales are greater as some stores don't carry Edge because they are not corporate stores. Also might skew sales in Edges's favor at corporate stores as it is the only place you can purchase one. Anyways, it gives hope that support will continue to grow for Edge!
Yes
It could be true , does it matter? No, since the Edge is a limited production phone anyways.

Remember When

Remember when you came to XDA everyday and there was always something new for your phone?
What is going on? We only have two roms for a phone thats been out for a year?
You want constent support from the development community, follow the sheep and buy a highly advertised device like the Note 4 or go pure Android with Nexus.
The Note Edge was never highly advertised, nor did anyone really know how using the edge would be like. So the majority of the public got a Note 4 over the Note Edge, because the heard about the phone more.
Or
You could learn how to build your own custom rom.
Ya I don't think it's the forum I think it's the phone. The sprint guy I asked at my local store told me about 2 months after it was released they haven't even sold 1 unit yet out of that store. I think it was way overpriced on the 2 year service agreement price. It was 299 for the note 4 and 429 for the note edge. I think that really hurt the sales.

That's not really a good excuse. The phone is the exact same other than the screen. I can't imagine it'd be that much more difficult to make a Note 4 rom work on an Edge.

The phone is not the exact same. Maybe some of the hardware is, but software wise it's a completely different animal.
The screen being a huge difference. In making a custom rom someone would need to figure out how to code to make use of the edge display like it works with stock rom.
Do some research before complaining. Like I said Samsung never intended for this device to be the new flagship device. The majority bought Note 4 or other devices. Or the heavy modders bought Nexus or the One Plus One.
One of the pitfalls to being a early adopter of a device that Samsung used as a feeler to see how the public reacted to the curved screen. Hell if I remember correctly Samsung only produced a limited amount of Samsung Note Edge's. Which could also be the reason why developers steered clear of this device.
you have to realize too as far as i have heard they sold a **** ton more note 4 than note edge so less people have them which equals to less people developing roms. i get bored with mine too sometimes i am checking for the lollipop update daily. just to get something different on there. but it is what it is man. be happy with it or go to the note 4 is my only advice for you

Yeah, I remember the times when I had a nonperfect phone that needed a custom Rom for major improvements. Now I don't have a dire need for full tweaks anymore, which is kind of boring. But I would love more cool new apps for the edge panel, other than uninspired superhero themes.
But I will soon try some Roms anyway, just for the fun of it.
If you want to point fingers aim them at samsung. This is, function wise, the best phone I ever had. They billed it as a concept phone and developers said: eff that! Why devote time and resources to a phone that is a shot in the dark. I had the htc hd2 and the htc sensation and in 2 weeks there were ROMs, tips, accessories and everything. The support and marketing for this phone has been abysmal. Samsung is lucky that I stopped rooting my phones so I do not look to tinker with it as much as I used to do so stock is fine. But they really did us, consumers of this particular phone, no favors.

But if you bought the phone for full price your shouldn't be locked into any contract.

All that I'll say is.... Getting an AOSP/AOKP rom to work with the edge panel has been.... Very unforgiving. I'll keep tinkering in my spare time, but it isnt looking good.
Otherwise, you'd be looking for more themed / debloated TW roms.... Which with root, you can debloat it yourself anyway....
-sent from the edge of the note galaxy-
I feel your pain.. the edge doesn't seem like that much of a difference at first, after all it's just 1 little screen that's different about it. I've reached a point where i am now just ordering a new one cause there is no going back with this one now. This time i'm going to do what i should have done in the first place... Make a backup immediately!
As far as building a complete custom rom ground up, I am not that good. i'd like to be but i just am not. i'll throw out probably a debloated TW with and one without root for those who only want to remove those annoying apps then dont care about root anymore. maybe save someone a little time.

Note 5, s7 Edge or Note 7?

So, I'm due an upgrade. A certain electronics dealer (not sure if it would be against the rules to name them) is running 2 promos: 1) Get a Note 5: get a $250 gift card at time of purchase. 2) Get any of the s7devices (Edge/Note too) and get a free 32" Sammy Smart TV. I don't really need the tv but the mother in law could use it. So, I literally cannot decide which to get. They have pros and cons all around. I'm a trucker, so my concern about the Edge's display is whether the glare along that curve would be annoying or distracting. My wife's s7 hasn't lagged yet, but reviews of both Notes mention lag (precious few reviews of Note 5 after MM update). Most reviews can't call a clear-cut "pick this one." And so, the freebies enter the equation. What do you guys think? I'm sure some of you had the 5. Do you think the 7 is significantly better? That it performs better?
Depends, I have been a note fan for along time. I use the s pen a bunch, and love the 5.7 inch screen size. I would say if you ate a note fan , and use the s pen a lot then go with the note 7. If you don't use the pen the the s7(or edge) would be good. I had the note 5 as my daily phone for a year, it's a solid phone, but the note 7 is better. The IP68 rating is awesome and I take the note 7 everywhere without worry about the weather. The battery performance is soo much better than the note 5 as well. I also was able to get the 256gb SD card for the Note 7 and its been great to be able to have all my music in my phone again. Hope this helps.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N930A using XDA-Developers mobile app
Sorry for lateness of reply. I've been testing an s7 Edge and an iPhone 6s+ to see if either is a suitable "upgrade." Can't do the iPhone. It's just too limiting. BUT since the Note 7 is officially done for, is the Note 5 "just as good?" I use the S Pen semi-regularly, but it isn't essential. I can do what I do without it. So I'm down to these 3 phones: s7 Edge which is ok but I'm UNimpressed with its performance. Seriously. I expected better, for some reason. LG v20 which is costly and even the AT&T rep was telling me "I've had literally 10 LG V10s returned in 6 months for manufacturing flaws." I asked her to elaborate and she said "Screen issues. Lines and such." Or the Note 5. If the s7 isn't flawless IMO, then how can a half generation older device be any better? Any input is appreciated.

I think it depends who you ask, and of course what you want to use it for. It isn't a bad device, but to give you an idea, I skipped the Note 5 in favor of my Note 4 at the time because of the removable battery and no SD card. The Note 7 however, was new enough to get me over to the other side and give the "no removable battery" a go (one of the added reasons was also the 256 GB SD card lol).
Right now, my personal options for a new phone are Pixel, V20, S7 Edge or back to my old Note 4 for the time being. And in all honesty, unless I like how the S7 Edge feels within a cover, I'll likely end up with my Note 4 again. I need the space an SD slot can provide me, and well, I'm still kind of hooked to the idea of being able to remove a battery and put a new one in

Like you, I held off on the 5 because of those issues. But I'm not a huge fan of the edges/curves. There's not a case on the market that provides decent protection for it simply due to the design. To make matters worse, Zagg pulled its tempered glass protectors because they weren't staying on. Haven't found one yet that does. Functionally, it's an awful design. It's easily broken. The v20 is an option, but it's really expensive, and I just can't justify that for an LG. They don't deserve it. I've never had luck with LG devices lasting. I'm not even remotely interested in the Pixel, but my Note 4 screen has burn-in. The s7 Edge isn't awful, but I was hoping for more in terms of performance. I may just return this one and get a regular s7.
The closest thing to the note 7 is the note 5.. I'm actually using both of them till I return my note 7..lol
I got the N5 when it came out, i was hesitant about the battery and memory (reason i got the 64gb) but i have had no issues. Im glad i didn't sell it. Its in perfect condition.

Hmm, I think that's a bit the thing. While I have read others saying similar things, I never had any issues with LG Prada that I had when it first came out. I loved that phone at the time.. but granted, it's also the only LG I ever owned so I don't really know for sure how the brand holds up with other models.
I bought an LG TV & Sound plate, and have owned a G2 & Tab 7.0. only the Tab 7 still works. Also, WAAAAY back in the day I had an LG Vu (in the pre-smart phone era). The $200 rebate helps lean me towards it.

There's a rebate on the V20 with ATT? If so, that may just be it for me to get pulled into it.

You have to trade in a paid off smartphone with a minimum value of $5. LOL I'm serious.

Hmm... darnit, I wish I didn't destroy a bunch of old smartphones a few months ago. Unsure if there's anything left besides my trusty Note 4... not really feeling like giving that phone up (plus it will get as much if not more when I sell it second hand).. imagine something like the Note 7 debacle happens again lol

Hmm just quickly checked.. still have to Galaxy S's (the first one)... guess I could get rid of those lol
---------- Post added at 10:55 ---------- Previous post was at 10:47 ----------
Hmm it seems I have a few more old phones, but they're all older than the S and unsure if they are all qualified to them as "smartphone", I even still have the LG Prada lol
Att charges 830 for the v20 and T-Mobile charges 750. Att is a rip off.

I agree, ATT is a lot more expensive, not just phones but also with the plans. Sadly it's also the only one (together with Verizon, but I want GSM for my trips to Europe so no chance I go to them) that has decent coverage in my state. T-mobile really lacks when it comes to coverage, their customer service isn't that great either in all honesty. The price is right, I agree, if only they had decent coverage then I could live with it I guess.
This might be good for us.

What about those that just stayed with their old Note 5. This is interesting. No point in me going to a s7 when i still have a perfect N5. Hope im not screwed for not jumping to the s7

I am thinking of holding on to the note 7 shut it off and use my one plus 3 until the s8 arrives. Then I will exchange for a s7 edge.
I wanted to hold out with my N7 but when they banned them on flights I figured just switch and deal with it...I went with the s7 edge because it was the closest to the N7...I've had it a few weeks now and it's okay. does most of the things the N7 did...I am unhappy with the screen size and do wish I had the stylus...Battery life is similar..But I do feel like I have gone backwards...
I have been calling ATT cust service and my local store trying to convince them to let me get the upgrade when the N8/S8 comes out but they wont...so I'm unhappy I'm locked into this Next contract with a year old phone..
I read Samsung may be doing upgrade offers to the N8 for N7 owners so there is still hope....
This S7 edge is an okay replacement to get us thru but its not a N7....

You're not necessarily locked into it though.. if you have the Next 12, and if you still have several months to go until the 12 months, you could pay forward to get the upgrade. The rules are pretty much saying that it needs to be paid for 12 months, not that you cannot upgrade for 12 months. Meaning, you pay a few months extra (let's say it comes out in august, you would have to pay 2-3 months extra probably). It isn't a favorable option since the phone you're essentially renting from them becomes more expensive to rent, but I have had it confirmed by an ATT rep that this is indeed possible to do.

I'm on the Next 30....I'll call ATT tomorrow and see if I can switch to the 12...ur right it's a better option altho i guess a little more expensive...

Who's gonna keep using their Note 7?

There's absolutely no other phone I want, so I'm seriously considering not turning my phone in and continuing to use it. Plus I'm not at all happy with the compensation of a $25 credit. What I would deem fair is allowing me to "use" an S7e or ANY phone I want until a suitable replacement phone (S8, Note 8, etc.) becomes available and then turning in the loaner for the better phone. Anyway... anyone else going to chance it and just keep on using their Note 7?

I really like the phone. But, it's not worth risking my life and property for.
Just got my replacement in the mail last Thursday. It's been working just fine. Doesn't get hot or anything with heavy use. I'm going to continue using my revised note 7 till they try to force me to deactivate it
Ive had a rough time getting a replacement, so ive been looking into the pixel xl or just snag a nexus 6p for cheap. Its not worth risking to me.

I'm going to keep mine because I have not had any issues and do not want to get a new phone. This mostly due to how terrible the corporate sprint store near me is. I had to go into the store 3 times to get a replacement.
The only problem (aside from the whole catching fire thing) is I doubt they'll be working on any software updates for the Note 7 now. No Nougut for the Note 7?
Sent from my SM-N930P using Tapatalk
I really wish there were better options out right now I would switch in a heart beat. Unfortunately there's nothing even close out right now or coming out in the next few weeks. If they force us to move on I'll probably go with the v20 or 7 edge.

I upgraded from a Note 3 to a Note 7. I need a Note with Micro SD card slot. I went on Ebay today and bought the best Note 4 I saw as a backup plan. I still have the original recalled Note 7 and plan to keep it for now. But like kstephens98 said, it won't get updates. And who's gonna wanna continue development here? I think I'll probably use the Note 4 until (hopefully) the Note 8 comes out. I just hope I can still get a full refund if it comes down to that. There's no other new phone out there that I would be interested in.
there is no competition.
i'll hold it until they have another fixed batch or until the Note 8.

Absolutely keeping mine. It's the best phone I've had, it's the phone I want to have, and I have absolutely no issues with it. No overheating. Doesn't even get warm.

As much as this comment exactly describes how i feel i have to return the phone. This is the hsrdest decision. Even harder than returning the first one cause last tine i knew it would be conning back. But it is now giing to be gone forever.
The main reasons are these
1) the phone cost $900. If i keep it i cannot get a new one probably ever.
2) development Will be non existent.
3) no resale value at all in the rare chance i could afford another one.
4) my husband will refuse to let me keep it even if i wanted to ignore 1-3
I was hoping for a new batch but from what I've read Samsung has officially dropped the note 7 all together.
Out the money for my case and have a gear vr which i cannot use. THIS SUCKS

Just an FYI just got this tidbit from Sprint Chat:
"Daniel M:*You can check the availability of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 with our Telesales team as the device is not available online and we are trying to get it back soon but any date is not confirmed."
was also confirmed by Telesales
If they get the note 5 back, I'd take that. I honestly don't think PHYSICALLY the note 7 is that different. On top of that, the Note 5 is honestly the best alternative. As sad as it is to say that a year old phone is the best alternative...it really, honestly is. I can deal without the USB-C, I can even deal with the lack of SD Card support(I haven't used an SD card in ages as long as there's a 64gb version). The water resistance would be nice...but after owning the S5, it was more.....convenient than anything. The "IF it drops in the water I don't have anything the worry about" feeling. I took underwater pics once just to say I did and could but....not like I'm gonna go swimming with that bad boy in my pocket lol.
Lastly, and most importantly for me, is the S-Pen. Unlike a good number of people, I actually use my....a lot. Which I find either people use it A LOT, or never lol. Anyway, if/when the Note 5 becomes available again, then I'll go back to that. But this Note 7 really was the PERFECT phone.
Water Resistance
S-Pen
AMAZIN screen to body ratio
iris scanner is way more functional than I anticipated
just the right about of edge on the screen
THE SCREEN PERIOD lol
the camera was near flawless in my opinion
everything about this phone......
If only Samsung wouldn't have rushed things. I think this phone would have beat out the iPhone anyway. Thing is, people who buy iPhones, buy iPhones. Getting them to switch is difficult because they're usually invested in apple products. iPads, Macbooks, lightning adapters, etc. People who buy Android phones are usually invested in it. Samsung people usually have Samsung Tablets, enjoy the gmail/google apps integration, enjoy the mass amount of free apps from the app store lol. This makes me want to cry lol
Went ahead and exchanged mine for an S7 Edge. It's a very nice phone too. Plus I didn't use the S-Pen like I thought I would.
In addition, Got two free gifts for my first note and my replacement note and now I've been approved for my S7 Edge. Three gifts, one purchase.
Anyone thinking of trading it in and doing the gift thing, sorry, it ended Oct 9th I believe.

They would end it just before they got destroyed with people switching and double dipping lol

Just got a text from sprint giving me 15 days to return my note to avoid a non return fee

ugh. I am going to call the corp guys tomorrow when I have time to ask what they are going to let me get away with. I am leaning like some others to the LG V20, but since it doesn't come out until the 28th it's outside a 15 day window. Would go without phone/phone payments and a Note 4 I pick up used for now if it meant using my upgrade later.
already sent my old phone back to them, as required to not get charged. So can't go back to that. After thinking about it, the S7 or S7E is a horrible choice since they will be replaced soon and then I'll be pissed I just got an old model.

I am going to keep using mine. There is NOTHING else that is even close to the Note 7. All of us who own the phone knows it is the sweetest one out there. I had considered the LG V20, but I would feel as though I had an inferior phone; judging by the reviews.
The reason I am here today is to root the phone to prevent Samsung from sending some type of kill update.
