[Q] Error during lollipop upgrade - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I received the OTA upgrade notice recently and I let it upgrade the device. The installation process can be initiated after reboot, but after a while I get the "Error" screen with the android logo lying down with a triangle exclamation mark at its stomach. It then gets stuck there for a couple of minutes, and then reboot to the original operating system.
Since there isn't any information on the error screen, I can't tell what causes the error. Has anyone encountered this and what should I do (or just wait)?
Thanks!

If you are on a custom rom/kernel/recovery i.e. not 100% stock, OTA will fail. Even if you are completely stock and rooted, OTA may fail.

It's completely stock. I once used Kingo Root to root my phone, but had soon reversed the operation. Not sure if that is a possible cause, but apart from that I didn't make any material change to the core system.

What should I do now? Seems more complicated than I'd like it to be

Nope, OTA is a no go on your phone. Flash the factory image.

i was just offered the OTA update for my Nexus 4 in the UK. i accepted the update and as far as i can tell, it downloaded it, then went to install it. however, that didn't seem to happen. after going through the motions and wanting to reboot, which i obviously allowed, the phone still displays as being v4.4.4 when i check for updates though, it tells me the phone is up to date.
i dont know what to do now, so would be glad of any assistance offered, please
just offered and accepted the download again. same result. it appears to be 2 things preventing the update from happening. the first one is about accepting an untrusted/ zip package (or something like that) and the 2nd is about fixing root. i have tried doing 'yes' to both of them and 'no' to both as well. same result, the download downloads but wont install.
could i upgrade using the Android Toolkit? i have paid for it, so have the pro features, but the update wasn't offered through it earlier

Do you have a custom recovery? CWM gives that untrusted package message if you have signature verification turned on. If yes, you need to revert to stock and also unroot. Supersu does have the option of unrooting so you could try that. You could check out the toolkit, at least it can be used for backing up your data to the PC.

tnx for the info, venu123. progress made so far. i downloaded the Lollipop image and put it into the folder within Android Toolkit. i then let it do it's thing. the phone is now updated but i am struggling to get root again and also need some instructions on how to get it to sync again as a lot of the apps i had on the phone are not there now. anyone able to help with this please?
gonna have another try to get root on the phone. if successful, willpost back

ok then. Android Toolkit didn't work. i can only assume that it's something to do with the Lollipop image not being in the program. however, i did get root by using the latest wugfresh app. many tnx to you for your efforts, wugfresh.
the one thing left for me to do now is somehow get the apps i had before the Lollipop update on the phone again. any help would be great, as i cant even see an option to sync the phone.

Is there a way to flash without wiping my data? Clearing my data is the last thing I'd want to do and, if this is unavoidable, I might just stay put.

I have a thought: since the message is telling me that dexdump has unexpected contents (that file actually doesn't seem to be there, as I've just checked), is it possible to just replace this file to bypass the problem? Thing is I cannot find this file anywhere for download.

Nevermind.. I copied that file from the factory image and the installation went smoothly!

android 4.2.2 update question

Hey guys, will the android update 4.2.2 erase everything on my nexus?I am rooted and unlocked, so if the main update thing does erase all of my data is there another way to update without loosing any of my data? I used the nexus toolkit to root, and I know there was an option to reinstall android without erasing data, but is that possible with a newer version of android..
Thanks
Micro
No it will not erase everything.
Because you are rooted, there is a chance that the OTA will not succeed, depending on how close to stock you are. (Some root apps appear to diddle a variety of things in /system, and if any of these things are targets of the OTA patching process, the OTA will fail). Also if you have a custom kernel, this particular OTA will not succeed.
If the OTA fails, no worries - it always fails during initial verification steps when it is checking to make sure that the checksums of targeted files exactly matches what it expects, before anything on your tab has been altered. So, if it fails don't freak out - everything on your tablet is the same as before the OTA started.
If it succeeds, you will loose root as a result of the setuid/setgid permissions of the "su" binary getting reset by the OTA installer script. You can either manually fix that with a "chmod" command (via adb with the custom recovery running and /system mounted) or you can simply re-flash the same SuperSU (or Superuser) root installer kit that you used when you originally rooted. The OTA also flashes a new stock recovery in place, so you will need to re-flash your custom recovery back into place after it has finished. That should be no problem so long as you know how to do so, using either fastboot directly or a toolkit.
I'm not sure you needed to start a new thread on this - scroll through a few pages here and see just how many "4.2.2. update question" threads there have been recently.
good luck.
PS If your OTA fails and you want to try patching things by hand, read through all the trouble threads in here before posting. Each time it runs, it will report the source of the error in /cache/recovery/recovery.log. As always, make a Nandroid backup before you begin.
Sorry what exactly does ota mean? And so your saying there's no way to update without loosing my data? If that's the case I'm not updating because I'm filled to the max with data

I said that it will either succeed or fail, and if it fails it will do so in a way where nothing changes. If it succeeds, it will change some things, but not the things you are referring to as "my data".

I was wondering if RootKeeper would work or not.
---------- Post added at 06:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:46 PM ----------
Wait....I just tried usig RootKeeper to temporarily un-Root the device then upgrade to 4.2.2 and it seems to have worked without an issue. I let it run through the entire upgrade, it rebooted, I looked to see what version I was on, it shows as 4.2.2, I then used RootKeep to restore Root, it worked like it was supposed to and it looks like it kept 4.2.2 as well.
I've tested a few apps that need Root and they worked just fine.
Hi all,
I've the same Problem here. the OTA-Update fails on my Nexus 7 (rooted). The message is only the green Robot with "Error". After restarting I can see that the version is still 4.2.1 :crying:
This is not the mainpoint (I've read up to now some threads which describing this issue). My point is: I can not restart the OTA-Update. There is no message whicht tolds me, that there is an update avalible... neither in the statusbar nor in the Settings.
Additionaly I can not find the log-file, which was some times described, where the error will be explained (I think it was deleted after the second restart).
Can someone explain me, how I can restart the OTA? Is it possible with the Framework-data deletion-trick? If I use this trick, what will be deleted in the Framework? Is there a place where the file /cache/recovery/recovery.log will be backuped?
If here is the wrong place for my questions, I'll make a new thread, but I think the thread which I've chosed fits it more or less

Warning - Newb question about updating to 98.18.78

I've been searching the net for the past few days and can't find anything specific to my issue. I'm hoping one of you guys can help me out, or at least point me in the right direction.
I'm currently on 98.15.66.xt907.en.us and I've gotten the OTA message, but any attempt to update fails. I had some bloatware frozen, so I unfroze it, pretty much back to stock, but the OTA update still fails. I have always been rooted, and I attempt to protect the root with Voodoo.
Yesterday, I took the further step of UNLOCKING my bootloader. So, now I'm unlocked, rooted, and I'm running TWRP 2.5 for recovery.
Here's what happens now, if i attempt to install the OTA. The file downloads, it reboots my phone, which immediately launches into TWRP. I don't really know what I'm supposed to do at this point, so I just click "Reboot system".
It gets stuck in a boot loop...it loads all the way up, but goes back to "Shutting down" (assuming to perform the OTA upgrade again) within a minute or so.
At this point, I have to do a Restore in TWRP to make my phone stop looping.
What I would like to do is get the upgrade to 98.18.78 and be on my merry way. I can't seem to find the OTA file for download, so I can attempt to install it in TWRP. Not even sure if that's possible.
Any help would be hugely appreciated.

I would NOT accept the OTA - the main purpose is to install a security patch to prevent you from unlocking the bootloader.

I was under the impression that once the Bootloader was unlocked it could never be "re-locked". Are you saying that's not the case? My BL is currently unlocked. But, I would like the bug fixes that come with the OTA update.

correct. however, in accepting the OTA, the phone tries to enter it's own recovery, and since you have replaced it, you are getting the error picture.
I think I read somewhere that some got a hold of the updated radio, so you can flash that if you like. but otherwise, no "real" bug fixes.

Actually, not exactly the case. Since we haven't had something like this (retail phone getting unlocked by exploit) involving moto phones, we don't know that it can't be relocked. For all we know, moto could OTA an update to the bootloader that makes it ignore the fuse entirely. We just don't know. Hence the warning about taking OTAs

No AT&T OTA update if rooted?

Tried to take the ota cause I read that after the update you can just reroot with the io tool. When I tried to take the update it said this device is suspected of rooting or something along those lines and the update failed to download and install. Has this happened to anyone else?

I didn't have this issue. I downloaded the update, but my problem was that I had a custom recovery installed and when my chromecast rebooted my phone, it sent it into a bootloop that wouldn't get out of recovery. I found an article here to fix that, but needless to say that I won't be doing OTA's with custom recovery again.
If you take the update, your recovery will loop. There is a fix for it in the root thread by @thecubed. So, the choice is yours.

I was just rooted on the stock rom. Forgot to mention that. I did however have "survive ota" checked in superuser though, I wonder if that had anything to do with it. I haven't tried it again with that unchecked. The update just isn't important enough to me to justify messing with it, I just took it because I was out of postpone attempts. But now the message is completely gone and not nagging me anymore and everything still works fine root and all.

OTA update from Phone will fail if you are rooted. Either on custom recovery or rooted status. Don't use update from phone, but connect phone to PC and use LG Support Tool. This one doesn't care of root, it will download full 10c update 1.9GB and update your phone. I just did it this way (rooted + TWRP). No problem, no data lost.
But of course, you need to root it again and install custom recovery as well.

You can get it from LG website. Or for example in this thread.
Don't do it!
Unless you NEED the ISIS functionality, I STRONGLY urge you to postpone or even disregard D80010o altogether. I don't know what "bug fixes" their release notes talked about as I've not seen one single improvement over D80010d, yet battery drain, battery drain. Once you update you'll notice your battery going downhill and all of a sudden "Android System" takes up about 50% of your battery usage. It's happened to 2 LG G2s I've owned, battery was phenomenal before the update, after the update... like I said. You'll learn to hate "Android System". I'd either wait for 4.3 or KitKat altogether.

Error while trying to update to 4.4 (D800)

Hey all. I have a rooted D800 (AT&T variant) with stock recovery and on firmware version D80010q. I am trying to update to the KitKat, but It's giving me an error every time I download and try to update. The error is: Err: 0x1111004. When the phone reboots, it says "This device is suspected in rooting. Software update is not available for rooted device".
I have tried using OTA rootkeeper to temporarily unroot, but it doesn't seem to work. Is there any way for me to get the update without having to flash back to stock?
This is my problem too. Hopefully there is a way.

Let us know if you went back to stock then did the update and it worked.
I've read that some people kept root through their OTA. Why are some people able to update and others aren't. I've been reading up on this for the VZW update whenever that happens. I hope I haven't kept all this bloatware on my phone for no reason!!

I reverted back to stock using the instructions in the Stickied post. I was then able to update to D80010o. I had to call to request a rep to push out the D80010q update again though. They're calling it a "security update" so you should use that phrase when talking to the rep so that they don't get confused and think that you're just requesting that they push out the KitKat update.
Once I got the D80010q update, the KitKat update was available and I was able to update. Unfortunately, I didn't try to root it prior to updating - though to be honest, I don't really feel the need to root anymore. Only reason I had it rooted before was to get the multitasking button, but I'm okay with using an S3 layout (Menu, Home, Back) since that's the phone I'm coming from.
I have posted this in Other thread too.. may be this helps (Or save some time)
1.What ever the phone came with (never saw the version)
2. Rooted: Then just froze the apps I don't need (DID NOT DELETE) NO Exposed Or anything fancy. PURE STOCK just at&T bloat froze.
3. Then the Silent update came... I guess it was 10q (few weeks back), It was fine... ROOT remained.
4. Kitkat update came..
5. I de-froze all the apps before the update..
6. Tried to installed KITKAT after download... (After 1 of 2) it says Err: 0x111004
Once booted it said this update is not for rooted device. (or something similar)
7. I thought may be it recognized SuperSU/Super USer so I Uninstalled (Removed complete ROOT through the app) Download again the Kitkat.. Same ERROR And SAME message. I went it Recovery (Button combo) to complete wipe (Noticed RED Rooted below on the screen on Recovery) did the complete wipe and Still No Luck.
8. Go back to Complete stock through flash method as I realized ROOTED written on recovery so no wipe will help that...
9. chat with AT&T asked them to push 10q the silent updated.
10. once it was done I asked her if she can push Kitkat too.. she did.
The only thing was lost all the data in the process.. But I kept my pic's Auto backup through g+ so they are safe.. rest everything I lost which I don't care anyway. (Chat etc)
SO the BOTTOM LINE IS... If you see ROOTED on your stock recovery NO matter what you do... It will not update. If you dont see it.. then your are fine I Guess ("I guess" is the keyword)
Edit:
Also I'm not sure if there are 2 versions of root methods... So if anyone has Root and was able to update to kitkat.. Can you link which Root method you guys used.. Thanks in advance.

Also I'm not sure if there are 2 versions of root methods... So if anyone has Root and was able to update to kitkat.. Can you link which Root method you guys used.. Thanks in advance.

Same thing happened to me. I followed your advice in the other thread and did a reset using the LG flash tool, following rootjunky's guide on youtube and using the files from his website. Everything went smoothly except for at the end I got the same check flag error thing, but it completed the reset perfectly.
I then chatted with ATT and had him push the update to my phone which brought me up to d80010o. It finally went through the update and didn't get me the root error. So I think I'm in the green now. He said that he didn't have an option to push the kit kat update to my phone but it told him to have me do it through the software update in the settings. Which I tried and it said it was up to date. But he said that since they roll out in batches my phone might just not be ready for it yet. I will keep trying though and I'm one step further than I was before. At least it let me update. Shout out to ATT though, chat service is on point.

Trouble updating

Not sure if this is the right place to post this.
This is the first time I've tried to system update my Razer Phone 2 since rooting it. I use Magisk. When I try to update, the download finishes, then a red error message at the top says "Installation Problem." I'm not sure the problem comes from the fact I rooted the phone. But I don't know where to begin to solve the problem.

Yes it's due to being rooted.
Depending on which image you're currently running you can start over by reinstalling stock image let it update then root again.

Should I re-lock the bl as well? Apparently you can do that. I kind of regret rooting. You can do anything fun with the Razer Phone 2
