(Done) Sent Back the N6, Got the X - X 2014 General

I had always been a nexus guy , since the n1.
Then I got the original moto x. I've never loved a phone so much. But my 1yo put it in the bath, so time for a new phone.
Bought the n6. Beautiful device, and I thought active display would be just as good. Boy was I wrong. Not even close.
(Voice on the other hand, I like better on the n6. The moto implementation doesn't let me call local businesses. It always thinks I'm calling a phone contact ) .
The screen is also just too big to really carry comfortably. Beautiful device though.
So I'm sending it back to AT&T at the end of the week, and I'm expecting my white /navy/ yellow 2014 x next week!

I ordered the nexus 6 and its on backorder. I'm still on the fence about canceling and ordering a moto x. I have also been a nexus guy since the N1. I think its the size of the 6 that's got me a bit uneasy.
On the other hand, the things holding me back are the camera and small battery on the x. I'm hoping the lollipop update on the x helped the camera somewhat. Gonna probably order the x and try it out till the 6 arrives. Enjoy your X.

I've always been a Nexus guy too but seriously the Moto X is just a properly sized Nexus 6. Let's just call it a Nexus 6 mini with respectable specs and exact same design. So far what I've seen with my Verizon Moto X on 5.0 and a Nexus 6 is that mine is actually faster and smoother.

Nexus guy here too. Owned every nexus except the galaxy nexus.
When i heard the rumors of the nexus 6 size i started looking outside the box. Lets face it, the moto x is a nexus device without the branding. The updates, stock software. The motorola additions are discreet, sleek and useful. I habe no regrets.
Only thing i REALLY miss is the CRT screen off animation

Is there no way to "tell" the Moto to go directly to Google Voice (bypassing Moto Voice) for a single command (like if you want to call a local business)?
I'm on the fence, close to pulling the trigger on a MotoX. The only thing holding me back is the "slowness"/delay of the Google Voice implementation. I LIKE the "value added" Moto Features, but some reviewers have criticised the slowness of the voice response due to the Motorola "middleware" before passing it off to Google Voice (specifically contrasting it to the Nexus 6 implementation). Is the eventual pass-off to Google Voice THAT much slower? Is the added delay worth it for the additional features of Moto Voice?

I wonder if it's possible to just implement the Google system ala n6

It IS possible to disable Moto Voice and just use native Google Voice. However, you will lose the Moto Voice "extras".
Moto Voice also adds Always On "OK Google" from the lock screen while the screen is off (and not plugged in) that is NOT supported with Kit-Kat. The Nexus 6 is able to do this without Moto Voice because Always On "OK Google" is supported in Lollipop (needs dedicated hardware too, but BOTH MotoX2 and N6 have it).
The $100 Question is: After you put Lollipop on the MotoX2, and disable Moto Voice, will it still have Always On "OK Google"?

That's exactly my question. Anyone have a moto x and can try it out?

I thought always on OK google was available in kit kat. Am I wrong here?

You can disable the moto voice and use the OK Google, but the command doesn't work with the screen off. It's a little of a disappointment but not a huge one for me. I would imagine that there could be a software work around. I tried getting the google dialer to work on the moto x today but to no avail. The ability to search for businesses directly in the dialer is a nice feature.
I've been thinking about the nexus 6 a lot the last few days because I could get it from AT&T for $250. I haven't played with one, but the only thing that concerns me is the size. The moto x is a difficult one-hander which means the nexus will be impossible.
The battery on the moto x has been pretty good for me and I use my phone quite a bit. It's a big improvement from the galaxy s4 that I had. The phone sleeps really well. I would expect some roms or flash packages to implement some of the nexus stuff, if that's really important for you.

I have HUGE hands (easily can palm an official mens basketball). The N5 was perfect size for me for 1 handed usage. I just got my X yesterday. I can operate it completely with 1 hand just BARELY. Its almost too big. Couldn't imagine a 6"

A LOT of people have that question (Will Always On OK Google work on a MotoX2 with Lollipop the same as on the N6)? It would be great if someone running Lollipop could test it. You DO NOT have to uninstall anything. Also, you only need to (temporarily) disable Moto Voice (NOT the other Moto Services).
To disable Moto Voice/Test Always On OK Google (from another site):
To do so, set Moto Voice off.
Then, go to System Settings and access Language & Input section.
Here, you will access "Google voice typing".
Inside this section, go to "Ok Google" Detection.
There you have to select all the three options available:
"From Google Search app";
"From any screen";
"From lock screen";
After that, you will see "OK GOOGLE" VOICE MODEL subsection.
Train or retrain your voice.
You'll be asked to repeat "Ok Google" for three times to train Google Now to recognize your voice.
After this, you'll be set. Google Now's hot word detection will be up and running. Lock you phone, wait for the screen to be off (don't be plugged in) and do a test.
It is important that the test be done with the phone unplugged and the screen OFF (not just locked).
BIG, BIG THANKS to whomever can test this!

I had the original X and loved it, I have the Note 3 now and it's a little too big for my liking. My girlfriend has the new X and she loves it, I think it's awesome too, the problem is that I'm unemployed and would have to get it on MotoCredit since T-Mobile doesn't sell it. The bigger problems I have are the small battery (my girl says it sucks compared to our Note 3's), the slower GPU, the mono speaker and the lack of AOSP development. The original X had pretty much no ROMs. The Nexus 6 I can get on T-Mobile and if I really don't like it, I can trade it in after 6 months, I don't have to worry about ROMs, the battery is one Ah larger, the GPU is better but it's just so huge. Technically it's not that much bigger than the Note 3 (1/4" on the short and long side?) but it just looks huge because the screen is massive. Before I got the Note 3 I actually wanted to get something like the Galaxy Mega but it had crappy hardware.

Moto X Pros/Cons IMO

Moto X Cons/Pros IMO
Hi, this can be a base for new Moto X users coming from other smartphones.
Pros
1. Moto X has one of the smoothest and fastest Android experience you'll have with any smartphone today.
If you're coming from a non-nexus smartphone, you'll definitely feel that. Everything just works in Moto X. It's the smartphone with the nearest experience of an iPhone in terms of speed and smoothness.
2. Moto X feels great in hand. It has the perfect size for a smartphone.
3. Screen size is perfect, you can reach every corner without a hassle.
Although some users might feel the difference coming from a bigger screen, you'll definately get used to it in no time.
4. Good materials, it feels like you're holding a really well made product. Not just plastic stuff.
5. Twist to fast access to camera is great.
I'm still getting used to it, but accessing the camera without even touching the screen is very handy. I thought it would be too much of a hassle to do that movement every time, but it turns out you get used to it very fast, and that's pretty easy.
6. Touchless Control.
Although it's almost useless here in Brazil, I'll include that because is it's really useful for the main languages that it includes. I still use it to showoff though. :victory:
7. The speaker is one of the best I've listened so far.
It's one of the loudest, its quality is pretty good. Basses are good too.
8. Battery life is superb.
It lasts for your entire day and even a little bit more. Compared to my last phone, a S3, I can really feel the difference.
9. Battery charges really fast.
Within 2 hours or so, my Moto X charges from 0% to 100% with stock wall charger. Considering its battery time, it's an amazingly fast charge: 2 hours charge for a 24h+ usage. My S3 used to charge in 5h+
10. Fast updates.
This is not something that will certainly happen, but it seems Motorola is committed to bring us Android OS updates and improvements updates really quickly. Although it has not been released for my Moto X here in Brazil yet, it's been released for the Moto X faster than the Nexus devices. Let's hope they keep it like that for some years, and not just because it's the momentum smartphone.
11. Active Notifications.
The best thing invented after the wheel, don't have to say anything about this.
Cons
1. Onscreen buttons takes too much space.
Although Moto X screen size is perfect, its virtual buttons takes a lot of that space, and you might feel a big hit when coming from a 4.8/5" phone that has its entire dedicated screen.
2. Camera is terrible.
Coming from a S3, I definitely felt a big hit here. Camera takes a big time to shoot photos; it takes too long to focus; it takes pics with different tonality every time, it's even hard to shoot 2 similar photos from 2 different angles. Below is an example of that.
Camera software is not the best aswell. We don't have night mode, quality/px choice, effects, and so on.

}
Those 2 pics are not edited and were shot with the Moto X camera in practically the same moment.
3. Touchless Control doesn't work everywhere.
For example in Brazil, not all the commands are available and it's just useful to call for someone and check weather predictions. Despite using it to call for someone, we don't get audio feedback for any of the commands.
4. Too thin for 2 hands usage?
That's a real real personal thought, but although Moto X has the perfect size for a one-hand feel, I'm really having a hard time typing in the keyboard and I wouldn't blame if it was a little wider. The phone is thinner than the S3, that I used to rest both hands and type, and wider than a smartphone that we can rest one hand and use the other sidewards.
But I'm really sure it's something I'll get used to within some time.
5. No sdcard slot.
I'm yet to see if this will be really a down vote to me on Moto X, but at least in my old S3, I had to use a 16gb sdcard to store some extra musics and pics. The default 16gb was not sufficient.
Well, that's it. It's a really great phone and it was for sure a great improvement coming from a S3. I do miss S3's camera and physical buttons, but despite that and the listed above, there's nothing else I can blame this phone for.
Feel free to add your own opinions, cons and pros.

Yes, I'm using the lastest Jelly Bean OTA update and the lastest camera update from the Play Store.

I used a demo at the store (one had kitkat and one didn't), and the kitkat one was SO much better. I think this camera really competes with the other flagships now.

@op great pros and cons list.
My pros:
- active display
- great feel in hand
- touchless control is really impressive (even works when the phone is in your pocket and you have headphones plugged in)
- battery life
- speaker
- performance
- call quality
- twist to launcher the camera
Cons:
- display is way too over saturated
- phone is heavier than I thought
- The camera is probably the worst I have used from all the other flagship phones this year, it really is a joke.
- locked boot loader.
This phone does the phone functionalities extremely well though I must say.

Thanks OP for sharing your experience. I'd just like to elaborate on the design.
I don't really quite know how to summarize my idea, but the emphasis on user experience is so great, it's borderline criminal, and it's easily the most understated feature of the Moto X. The texture of the back feels extremely wonderful to hold that doesn't feel like cheap plastic nor cold hard aluminium. The contours (?) of the phone is curved in such a way that feels absolutely comfortable - I wouldn't be surprised if Motorola took the palm/hand profiles of many people and designed the back with it. In conjunction with that, the buttons are positioned well enough to allow me to reach for them whenever I need it. And that dent on the back cover! My finger now gravitates to that point to get a solid grab on the phone. _Finally_ I have a phone that doesn't have to depend on aluminium for that premium feel, or worse still, give UX design a middle finger and design a pile of manure (*coughsamsungcough*) for use.
I was really pleasantly surprised to find out for myself how good the speaker was. It's loud, but distortion is hardly noticeable at maximum volume. (Coming from a Galaxy Nexus, I suppose I get a bit too excited. heh) The camera's been improving steadily, thankfully, but it could use more repairs. I would appreciate it very much if I could take photos faster - the idea of twist-to-camera is kinda wasted on a slow-responding camera like this.
I have friends using the Nexus 5 beside me, and in all honesty I don't feel like I'm missing out on much. Then again, I paid a bloody premium for the phone . But seriously speaking, no regrets. At all. If I had to make the decision all over again, I'd still shoot for the Moto X. Never mind that there's no support for LTE in Malaysia or Singapore (I alternate between these two countries most frequently), or that the SD card slot is missing. I have not been so contented with a purchase in a very, very long time.
For me the biggest thing missing is wireless charging inbuilt.. the port for charging is terrible.. tests my patience every time i try to plugin charger

I believe a member is working on making it work on his in the accessories section.
What are the chances of a QI case being released? I would be all for that.
Cannot believe incipio decided to make a powermat charging case... WHO USES POWERMAT!?
My biggest and only real complaint about the Moto X is the camera. It does not feel like it matches up to even some 2011 phone cameras.
Nice Article.
I'm loving my Moto X 'Argentina Edition' (no root yet ).
On the 'Cons 4' section I swipe a lot, and never again hold my phoine with 2 hands
While driving I can text with the mic, not sure on portuguese, but spanish works great!
OK Google Now
is so much more sensitive in 4.4. I'm using the nexus 5 gel and my phone is constantly beeping and googling my last few words. Kinda strange
I'm still on 4.2.2 but I would have to say the camera, the smaller screen size, and the color saturation of the screen.
I bought a nexus 5 earlier this month and switch between the two phones all the time. {Google apps sync everything} and those would be my main complaints. Obviously the screen size is completely subjective, but I much prefer the n5 screen. I do like the battery life, but I usually have a charger at work and at home, and both phones seem to give me more than acceptable battery life.
The biggest complaint I have is the lack of accessories, cases and screen protectors for it.
I also would like our Canadian carriers to hurry up with the 4.4 updates.

Moto E - Review from a G owner.

Ok, first things first, let me just say this phone absolutely unequivocally rocks. I was expecting this sub-£100 device to be pretty crappy in comparison to the Moto G which I already own. Nope. I was completely wrong.
I bought the Moto E three days ago from O2 as they were first to stock it online, it cost me £79. That's it, £79. No minimum top-up or delivery charge, which I'd also like to mention arrived the next morning.
First impression out the box, if you closed your eyes and held both the G and E together you'd be pushed to notice a difference between the two. The Moto E possibly feeling slightly chunkier, yet smaller at the same time?? Even with both eyes open they're virtually identical, and the similarities don't stop there.
The first thing that truly wowed me was that screen. For £79 you're getting an amazing screen for your money, it has the EXACT same clarity and vividness that the Moto G has, and to be honest I think it may actually be better (colour and backlight wise) , albeit very (very!) slightly smaller. Very crisp and sharp, I've never seen this on a phone less than £110-120. Amazing.
Next, CPU. Yes it's only dual core but I'm yet to experience any significant lag, if at all. Even Chrome is a breeze (which is nowadays renowned at being super slow on lower-end mobiles). GPU seems fine also, having tried Temple Run and Subway Surfer, they both never dipped any frame rates. So I can't really fault the onboard processors. Again: amazing.
Camera quality is not spectacular, but guys, this is a budget phone. To be fair the camera is perfect for everyday snaps, I doubt you'd really want more on a daily basis, not unless you're a professional photographer or have £500 for an iPhone.
The loudspeaker, from what I can tell has moved to the front of the phone and is located where the bottom silver bezel is. The top silver bezel obviously being the in-call speaker.
The battery (nearly 2000mAh!!!) is still on it's first charge since it arrived (yesterday morning) and is still reading 15% even after some fierce app installing and exploring.
Besides those main points I'm struggling to find any other major differences between the E and it's older brother.
Motorola are also bringing out new Grip-Shell back covers that replace the stock battery cover and provide a rubberised band around the phones perimeter (like a bumper case, but integrated into the phone). Can't wait to get my hands on them too, though I should think that will be a few weeks yet.
My final verdict is that this phone is an epic ground-breaker, other companies are truly going to struggle to compete with this device in regards to everything: cost, features etc.
My advice to you: find £80, buy this phone and a lottery ticket.

Thanks for the review. I'm surprised about the screen being so good when it's nearly 30% less in PPI. Running so well on low specs is moto's specialty so that doesn't surprise me, neither the poor camera.
I still think the moto g is a better deal, especially when I got my 16gb version fro. Tesco for just over £100
Sent from my XT1032 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Not as surprised as I was, I was expecting a grainy narrow angle screen, like on the low-end samsungs. Complete opposite. I would probably agree with you about the Moto G though, that's still a bargain of the year considering it's specs.
I think the E will be aimed towards people that don't really want to spend a lot, don't really care about super-dooper specs, and just want a phone that works well.
Dont expect more, here in India its costsjust half than Moto G dual 16GB. So what it offers is good enough.

I have a little concern for the CPU. So no lag, no problem ?
I'm coming from Xperia U and i would not have lags
I can honestly say that I am yet to experience any lag through everyday use. Just because it's dual core doesn't mean it's going to be equivalent to other dual core phones (ehem Samsung).
wish the camera had Autofocus too

I got my Moto G yesterday (XT1022, Indian version) and I paired it up with a 32 GB memory card that arrived today.
A few points.
The screen is pretty sharp. It's not the best but it's a HUGE step up from the Samsung Galaxy Y, HTC explorer and the Galaxy Ace and even the Sony Xperia M that I have plenty of experience with in this price range. It doesn't match up with the G though. But then again, I can always tell the difference between my N5 and N7. So, yeah...
2. No USB cable is a bummer. I have 2 more lying about and I transfer data over WiFi or cloud though and it's not really a problem for me but is it really that much more expensive to give a charger and cable separately?
3. I don't really care about benchmarks. If you've seen enough, they stop making sense and I've stopped caring about anything other than pure graphics benchmarks. But anyway, general performance is good, especially on ART. However you hit it's limits pretty fast and it is a good bit slower in general - even simple stuff like hitting a settings option gives makes the phone hesitate a tiny bit longer. But then, I can spot those on an N5. It's either equal to or slightly worse than the Moto G and people tell me don't see it at all. YMMV. I haven't this phone around
. so I can't really comment about the E just yet.
4. Touch response is good. None of the annoying stuff you see on most low end phones.
5. No freezes or hiccups so far. Software seems solid
6. Loudspeaker is LOUD. Try the pyxis ringtone to get all that loudness out
7. Both sim slots support 3G, but you might have to change this setting in dial sim setup
8. The headset provided is Meh. The Sony Xperia M headset is still SO much better. And the microphone appears to work in the E.
Those are all the things off the top off my head. Let me know of you guys have any questions.

Antutu Benchmark Results
Here's the results from Antutu. Not bad considering it sits just below the S3.
As a comparison the Moto G resulted around ~17,200

I had to get a nexus 5, and returned it after 8 hours

So here's the story.
Yesterday I dropped, my beloved, motox and broke the screen. So I scrambled on kijjiji to find a used one. I only managed to find 2,one guy was asking 260 and another guy was asking 340.
I decided to check my carrier to see if I was eligible for an upgrade. I was with an early upgrade fee (125), I thought this was great. So I clicked to search for a motox but Rogers doesn't sell it anymore. So I had to settle for a nexus 5 ($0 on 2 year renewal).
I've been playing with it for 2 hours and I already miss my motox, I can't wait to sell this thing and get the new motox (motox+1).
Pros of the nexus 5 over a motox:
Not much. I really have to struggle to put something here.
-Okay no carrier name in the notification shade.
-Timely updates.
-Grippy back.
-Lighter
Cons:
Everything.
-I miss touchless control (I miss being able to say 'OK Google now' from anywhere and it would respond)
-I miss touchless notifications
-I miss twist to launch camera (I didn't think I'd use this feature as much as I did). Its so handy to grab the phone and twist it and the camera is ready to shoot.
-I miss being able to press anywhere on the viewfinder to take a picture.
-camera controls are crap
-placement of power and volume buttons are to high up on the phone
Motox did so many things right

I just had the same exact thing happen to me.
My wife dropped my Moto X and cracked the screen, i then bought a 32gb Nexus 5 from EBay and I don't like it !.
The Touchless controls and active notifications are the things I miss the most.
I find the camera also to suck on the Nexus 5.
So a friend yesterday sent me this article.
I can't post the link as I'm a new user so I will private message it to you.
If your Moto X is still under warranty and you used the moto maker, you can request RMA and send back to Motorola.
Motorola will let you recreate a new moto x for free !
Once you receive your new free replacement you are obligated to send back your broken moto x within 10 days otherwise they will charge full price for the new handset.
The Article has all the details.
If you have any questions, just hit me up !

I went from nexus 5 to moto x and while I am using more and more of the unique features such as touch less control (driving) and the camera hand twist, I will disagree with you that the moto x has the better camera. Camera and screen are where the nexus 5 have the advantage. My wife still has her nexus 5 her pictures of the same things we shoot come out on top more often than not. Mostly because of the OIS. Color accuracy is better on the n5 as well. Don't get me wrong, the moto x has definitely grown on me and touch less controls are becoming a MUST. If the moto x+1 can fix those few gripes I'll definitely stay in the moto family. oh and moto x on average gets better battery life than my n5.

I never implied the picture quality on the motox is better, I was simply saying the camera controls are better in the motox. For example if you want to flip to front camera the control is right there on the viewfinder I don't have to go into a menu to do it. Same applies for taking a video it's right there.
Motorola really made the motox functional. If they had priced it right, it would have sold like crazy.

The camera part was more directed to the person who said the nexus 5 camera sucks. I do like most of the motox cameras features. I like that you don't pinch to zoom, you just swipe up or down and you can do burst mode by just holding down on the screen.

I have the Nexus 5 and I love it. I upgraded from Galaxy S3 and if the Moto X had launched in the UK before the N5 then I may have bought it. I say *may* because the screen is the same resolution as my old phone plus it was smaller. And the outdated processor did not impress me either.
Although I don't know how much I would actually use it I am pretty jealous of the 'always listening' feature of the Moto X though and I'm strongly considering getting the X+1, so long as Moto don't pull the same stunt they did with the X; 'Let's release it in the US but then wait six months before getting it to any other country'.
If they pull that again then it's highly likely I will be tempted by the Nexus 6 or Android Silver line (whichever actually happens) which, if history serves as a guide, will come out towards the end of the year.
Which would be a shame because I wouldn't mind swapping my Snapdragon 800/1080p/2GB RAM/32GB storage phone for one of the same specification soon - but there's no way I would do that next year, when Snapdragon 801 will have been superceded by 805, and pretty much every flagship is going to have 3GB RAM and QHD display by that time. That would just stick in my craw a bit too much.

If higher numbers specs that much, you really need to follow it...
... but, for everyone who had read about it, knows that its not just higher numbers, not even the "outdate" (just because its a dual-core). Simply enough, architecture, the Android necessarily need quad or octa? 3gb of ram? 2k?

Setspeed Trust me man, it's not about the number of processor or anything if the hardware is optimised to the software specs mean nothing. Use the motox and you'll see what I mean.
Motorola did make a few mistakes marketing this phone though. Not selling world wide on initial release, pricing too high and not marketing enough. Because the motox offers all the benefits of vanilla android with the added features of touchless control and active display.

Had an N5 from launch to replace my n4 from launch (and other nexus beforehand). Both are great, beautiful phones. Came to the moto x for the touchless features and the essentially stock 4.4.2. I love it. It is beautifully designed, maybe a little underpowered, but very well executed. The x8 chip set is excellent, but could probably do better with a slight improvement in the main cores. I've had a few issues, some regular force closes, but nothing that takes the shine off.
Long story short? I loved my n5... I sold it only because I love the features that moto x has... I didn't expect to buy a feature smartphone, but it's a freak in the smartphone category... Long live the moto x (+1?)

I don't know when people will understand that really. I mean look at the sales, all the high specified phones are selling like hotcakes, and the Moto X, well nowhere near. God knows what people like in a highly spec'ed phone which runs like crap. The three devices I had were S4, Note 2, S2, and other than the S2 all of them are overpriced sh!t. Seriously. People call me crazy that I am thinking about getting the Moto X after owning the S4
It's like they are buying a computer, higher you go, more performance you get, like they will play Watch Dogs on it. However I utterly hate iPhone and iOS but there's some point why that bloody thing sells well.

I see what you're saying when it comes to Samsung, but not the Nexus - it performs better than any other Android phone because it's the highest specced stock software phone. I guarantee you that it's quicker and smoother than the Moto X, because of better hardware. If I could get the always listening touchless controls on my N5 then I wouldn't even be hanging around this forum sniffing about for X+1 news! But I can't, so here I am

Good decision my man!
You've just saved yourself from dealing with a load of issues by returning the N5!
I've come from the N5 to my Moto X and haven't looked back seriously.
I had so many issues with the N5 that I got Google to send me 11 replacements (YES ELEVEN REPLACEMENTS!!!) and in the end Google decided it wasn't the phone for me and gave me a full refund.
My issues experienced:
-Extremely poor call quality where the person on the other end can hardly hear you and you always have to shout to be heard
-Noise cancellation broken/faulty (looks like a hardware issue)
-Poor build quality as I kept getting dead pixels on 3 of the handsets
-Speaker volume very very low compared to the Moto X
-SIM card tray never used to sit flush with the body on quite a few of the models
-Bluetooth streaming issues
The main issue for me was the fact that I couldn't make phone calls properly. I loved the vanilla experience but I still get that with my Moto X.

'OK Google' will work even when screen is off

Just found this on the Lollipop official brochure (https://android.com/versions/lollipop-5-0)
"Even if your screen is off, you can say "OK Google" on devices with digital signal processing support such as Nexus 6 and Nexus 9"
So seems like the Nexus 6 will have hotword support even when the phone is off. Pretty cool.
That's good news. Will we able to customize the hotword?
Nice!
This already works on the N5 (when plugged in) and is built into every Sanpdragon 8xx cpu, Android is finally taking advantage of it. Its not a new hardware feature.

In the Moto X has always worked even when device was unplugged, without any sort of battery impact. I tried it on my first gen Moto X and battery life was the same with or without hotwork. I am assuming this will work also when unplugged on the Nexus 6?
It's so silly to say "OK Google" when surrounded by people, that I really don't care for this feature. It was present on the original Moto X anyway, and I don't think anyone used it more than one day to see that it works.
I use okay Google all the time in public. Stop worrying about what other losers think.

Nexus 5x vs Moto x variants

Since some people seem to think Nexus 5x is overpriced/underspec'ed and think that the Moto x play or style are more viable options, what are some of your reasons for getting one or the other?
I personally pre-ordered the Nexus 5x but am reconsidering because the Moto X play is similarly sized but with a bigger screen, expandable storage (32 gb may not be enough or pushing is close), and way bigger battery.
Let me and the rest of the community know your for and against for each.
For Nexus 5X: Finger print scanner. Guaranteed updates for a long time - unlike moto X 2014 on at&t (not getting 6.0) - which for me is a huge deal and causes me to distrust Motorola. Smaller form factor. Better camera in low light (I'm hoping, but it sounds like it will be).

Thats interesting I didn't notice that Moto left out the Moto x 2014 from the update list. Maybe it will be added later? Or did they explicitly say it will be left out? Also the Moto X play was the intriguing phone for me since it's practically the same size (within 3 mm in all dimensions). But way bigger battery, storage and screen (bittersweet, may be too big).
Nexus 5x for me has better screen size but still bigger footprint than size suggests. Also 32 gb may be too little especially with increasing app size. Updates are key to me.

Yeah people that bought the carrier moto X should have seen that coming. The moto X pure was released for a reason. The carrier version was for people on a budget that wanted a decent performing smartphone and didn't care about rooting or Android version numbers

Moto X is too big. The Nexus 5 is too big as well but it is closer to a phone than a phablet.

Actually if you look at the spec list and even the phone arena size compare tool with overlap you will notice that the Moto X play is only very very close to the footprint of the 5x but with a bigger screen and its thicker but has micro sd slot. Only thing that doesnt seem great is the performance which is hit or miss for some. It even has CMod.
Also I pre ordered the 5x as well so I'm not here to sing praise but I noticed the X play and wanted to get people's opinions.
TL;DR - I'm returning the Moto X Pure (for now) in order to give the Nexus 5X a shot.
Here's my opinion on 5X vs Moto X (2015 Pure in my case).
I'll start off saying that I've become incredibly picky with finding the perfect phone for me, or at least close enough. There's no such thing as the perfect phone for everyone.
My general requirements (desires) are:
Decent processor/storage/battery/camera. Top notch specs aren't required.
Rooted and unlocked bootloader or the ability to flash custom roms if not fully unlocked
Stock or close to stock android or CM12.x
Compatible with Verizon (still have unlimited and not giving it up)
I'm coming from an LG G2 (Verizon VS980) which I ran from 11/2014 until 09/2015. It was rooted and running CM12/12.1 or a variant. It ran great, few complaints other than battery life (a little over 3hr SOT max, often less). 32gb was never an issue for my usage and I don't do any gaming so top spec'd processor doesn't really matter as long as normal OS navigation is smooth and fast.
I preordered the G4, but the lack of development and having to run LG's skin turned me away. I also had issues with missed touches and some strange screen glitching that appeared to be related to defective HW. I returned this and went back to the G2.
I thought the Moto X Pure (2015) would be perfect. It has a good processor, battery and camera. The fast charging is fantastic and gets me from 20ish% to full on my 45+ min commute using a QC 2.0 Anker car charger. I love the weight and the feel of the device, feels premium to me. But it's a bit too large even though I have large hands and can grip fully around the device without issue. 5.2-5.5 is the sweet spot for me. I've been experiencing a lot of lag, and honestly the G2 feels a lot faster. I didn't expect to have lag with the Moto X especially since it's mostly stock Android. I also haven't had good battery life even being rooted, unlocked and running greenify along with some other wakelock-reducing tweaks (wifi, BT, location are always on and I don't turn off syncing of anything in my google account). Phone is off the charger daily around 5-5:30am and while I have the ability to charge at work and to/from work, if I don't, I get around 18hrs off the charger and MAX of 3hrs SOT. Maybe that's good, but it just doesn't seem to cut it for me.
I'm going with the 5X in hopes that the size will feel better, the 1080p won't draw as much power so the downsizing from 3000 to 2700mah will be a moot point. I think the camera will live up to my expectations. I'm into photography and have a Canon 6D along with some nice L glass that I pull out when I need a good photo. Since I don't do any gaming or run apps that really hog any memory, I don't expect the 2gb RAM to be an issue (it was fine on the G2).
I should know soon enough if the 5X will be the right phone for me. I'm optimistic, but if it's not, then I'll be able to compare to the Moto X Pure and decide to keep the 5X or to repurchase the Moto X Pure. They're the only 2 phones on the market that seem to meet my criteria.
My apologies for the long-winded reply, but hopefully this will help someone else.

I'm on of those who had a bad experience with the Moto X Play. Some tell me theirs has no lag at all, mine lags for the most simple tasks. Swiping down the quick toggles while inside Google Play Music is the worst. I can't recommend it.

On my 2nd gen X (att... Not pure) I had a lot of those issues. Notifications and recent are by far the worst. Actually caused me to sell it and go back to N5

agree 100% what you said in the long post. Our priorities and values are in line. But I am coming from a moto x dev
I'm having the same difficulty deciding as well. I think performance will be mostly equal as will battery. I never cared about a finger print scanner, and the updates will be not that far away from each other (i'm confident moto will have it by month's end, which might beat some peoples Nexus 5x/6p shipments). The biggest thing here for me will be the moto add ons like moto voice, turbopower charger and front speakers compared to the Nexus 5x's smaller yet preferred size and most likely better camera.

unlike moto X 2014 on at&t (not getting 6.0) - which for me is a huge deal and causes me to distrust Motorola.

OK first of all those are CARRIER decisions that Moto has nothing to do with. Which is why the are releasing it for the Pure Editions (which they control). Blaming moto isn't fair, blame your carriers.

First the Nexus 5 was my favorite phone of all time. I still miss it. BUT it obviously had some shortcomings. Battery life wasn't one of it's strong points and even though 6.0 will be more efficient I'm going to be in the camp that if you were not happy with 18hrs/3hr SOT then you won't be happy with the 5X battery time is my guess. I'm really torn myself, I think I'm going to skip over this round and wait until the 820 SoC phones come out.

Why should I blame the carriers when I had the Pure? They were slow after 5.0 and that's a problem

Alot of those Moto perks were likely determined/designed while Google still owned Moto. Now that they dont, I'd be very wary of them keeping it up down the line past a year. Of course, most of you will have a new phone by then anyways.
