Just got the Telus sm-g900w8 - Want to be 100% sure before i root it - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everyone,
I just got the sm-g900w8 model of the Samsung Galaxy S5 from TELUS (Canada)
Is this "kltecan" ? Where can i confirm that
I've had some issues with lag and wanted to give a pure stock/AOSP rom a try
I'm experienced with modding android phones but i'm new to the samsung space
Before i brick my phone, i wanted to be 100% sure that i can follow this thread with the model i'm using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699648
That will give me root and recovery
Will i need to use Odin to flash everything or can i unlock the bootloader and use fastboot/recovery
is there any benefit to TWRP over CWM? I've been using TWRP for a while and want to continue using it...
Then what AOSP rom can i try out?
I see forums for each of the american mobile providers but dont know which one in particular would be best suited for Telus and/or g900w8
Thanks!!

Just found the CF-auto-root specific to the sm-g900w8
http://download.chainfire.eu/406/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-kltecan-kltevl-smg900w8.zip
So:
1. boot into download mode on the s5 (turn off phone, then hold VolDown+Home+Power to boot)
2. plug it into my windows machine
3. manually install the drivers
4. open odin.exe (included in cf auto root zip)
5. select the cf-auto-root.tar.md5 file in the PDA section of odin and tell it to flash
on a successful flash, the phone should reboot automatically
let it boot up to normal android, and i should have root
to flash twrp i follow the above steps again but now select hte md5 for the twrp recovery instead
correct?

bump!!

Oh canada. How I feel for it's users. Silly variants stopping users from the main draw of android, roms and mods! If I lived there I'd buy imports

lol its just samsung and their weird hardware deployments

That's why flashing the sprint 5.0 leak is working so well for people, is it, or does that g900 not count towards the 'anything' as you claim? Its great that you want to pipe up with incorrect information and look like a jerk off in multiple threads, but you're still wrong. So quit making Canadians look like assholes, and quit giving advice that will fu(k peoples phones. Hit the search tab for once, maybe even read a thread or two, and find out what happens when you flash the wrong boot loader for the wrong device.

So from my quick google search, the 0x0 comes up after root and is some kind of warranty flag?
any way to restore it back?
EDIT: the 0x0 flag turns to a 0x1 once the phone is rooted. Some people apparently have been able to keep the 0x0 flag after using towelroot?

Once the Knox warranty bit has been tripped, there is currently no known way to reset it. There are root methods that don't trip Knox, but I've not yet actually rooted my S5, so won't advise specifics on that one. You will want to look for 'no Knox trip' or some such thing if the warranty issue concerns you.

See, this is why i made this thread!

Wait, so now i have to re-ask, but i assume that simply going to https://towelroot.com/ and downloading the APK will work for my model correct?
android 4.4.2 as well i believe
And if so, obviously i dont need to use Odin to flash the cf-auto-root anymore!
but i still need to use odin to flash TWRP
root must be done first?
Or can i flash TWRP without root?

Flashing TWRP will trip Knox as well, if you need to keep knox 0x0 then there are threads helping you to keep it that way, but you will always be jumping through hoops to keep it that way and be some what limited to what you can do.

You can use any ROM that is ktle. Im currently using cm 14 in the unified android thread. If you want something more stable but like cyanogenmod then go with the cm 13 in the albinoman thread. I use the smaller version of gapps like nano.

[Q] new to S4. want root. on 9505

HI. I just got my S4 today. I come from having an S3 for the last 6 months - flashed and rooted and whatever.
This Knox stuff confuses me. I have spent half the day reading about it, and still don't entirely understand.
I'm in the UK, i just got a blue S4 on EE from P4U (so it is not simlocked or carrier branded), XXUDMH8.
I just want root so i can restore my messages with Helium and debloat with systemcleanup. The bloat is KILLING the battery, omg.
Can anyone give me advice? My Knox is still 0x0 though i dont know if it matters with P4U either way with respect to warranty...

to me, Knox is about warranty only if u are sending yr device for repair.
that's what Samsung has implement on 4.3 firmwares.
other than that, u can use it on a daily basis, with knox 0x1.
keep checking the thread until the dev or any other threads comes up with a knox solution.

I'm either thick, or addled from too much new information coming from S3, which was so easy compared to this.
I cant even see the link to a plain mega rom. I dont want wanam or exposed or any of that, i just want stock with root so i can debloat because my battery is running down so quickly...
edit: got it. still want to try and avoid tripping knox, if i can. I dont want Wanam... do i need it?
ACTUALLY: i like the look of Echoe 5.0 - since it wont trip the Knox, can i flash that instead? I'm quite familiar with Odin so that isnt a problem, and with modems too, and kernels, etc...

Happy for you! On the other hand, I am a newbie eager to know how to flash the newest ROM, the "Echoe v5 plus". I have the same XXUDMH8 version and i have a white Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505. I have never done a root, but as i have understood so far by reading the past 3 days (day and night): i have to enable USB debugging, i have to ROOT it first with Odin and CF-Autoroot. Then i guess i have to RECOVER/BACK UP with philz touch 5.18.5-i9505.tar.md5 file, again in downloading mode (Volume down+Power+Home, then volume up to accept). after that i should be able to FLASH the newest rom (currently uploading by friedrich420) i hope i am right about this, because i asked people around and nobody is willing to help me so far and one more thing: i am really confused with the MJ5 modem flash...do i need to flash this modem version BEFORE or AFTER i flash the echoe v5 plus ROM?
Thank you in advance, any helpful answer would be more than welcome.

I didnt use CFautoroot because i read it triggers Knox.
I also read custom recovery triggers Knox.
Normally you'd want a custom recovery like philZ (i had it on my S3, its brilliant) and then once you have root you're free to flash whatever rom you want. Modem you'd only change if you keep getting dropped signal for the phone. Odin is cool, also you can flash zips in PhilZ / clockworkmod recovery.
BUT. If you want Knox intact, the only, ONLY method so far, is to use the thread linked further up, get a "Megarom", flash it, then do what it says with the .sh and the folder, and that's it, do nothing else.
I have done this, but i havent done EchoeRom -yet-. I want to (!!!!!!) -- who doesnt want a phone full of Pink Floyd OMG.

[Q] Does Towelroot not work anymore? Why is my S5 not supported?

Galaxy S5, SM-G900F (I'm in Europe), Kernel is Jul 3 2014,
I used to have Towelroot. I unrooted, updated to my most current Android version (4.4.2), and since then Towelroot won't work to reroot (it says I'm not supported). Is this so for all others? Is there a way to properly have Towelroot root my device, or is Odin my only option now?
Thanks.

Christ the writing in this thread, just answer him for crying out loud. @tempest22 you've answered your own question, you updated. Towel root doesn't work on the newest firmware, downgrade using Odin to an earlier build then use towel root, use neatroms method to install a recovery and flash a ROM , you'll need to use mobile Odin to flash the modem and bootloader, or you may even be able to do it via recovery if you're on a high enough ROM version, there are other ways to root and install a custom rom. If its just root access you need then downgrade then use towel root..always use a method which retains your Knox 0x0 status.

Thank you so much man, seriously. I really just need root access, so if Towelroot doesn't work anymore I guess I'll just use Odin knowing it will trip Knox. Apart from voiding the warranty it doesn't do anything else right? Any reason to keep Knox? I'd rather keep the most recent firmware, so no downgrade for me.
I don't think flashing a ROM via odin makes you lose your warranty, flashing a custom recovery would, bootloader, modem. But not the entire official TAR file. So you won't have anything to worry about. If it were me id do everything I can to retain my warranty, chances are Knox will never be fixed, so if you trip it then it'll stay that way. There is a guide once you're rooted in neat ROMs thread, its straight forward, just download everything you need, get Odin ready and follow the guide. Should be a walk in the park.
Good luck m8

Not disregarding other replies " But", if your not concerned about warranty, and your work doesn't require your phone to have Knox security enabled, Root and flash to your hearts content. Again.... If warranty, is Not a concern, go for it, because trying to maintain Knox 0x0, makes things more complicated than they need to be, nor do you get to try all options at your disposal , and really if you weren't a little bit of a risk taker you would not even know what XDA does.(Odin away, lol) Again just my opinion and if it offends, disregard.

ThePagel said:
Correct me if I am wrong here, the reason knox is being tripped by cf auto root is because of the way it acquirers root not because it is rooted. With that in mind I would Like to make a tar ball with a pre rooted system.img. To make sure it will have the best possibility to not trip knox and not cause a soft brick I want to use a system dump from a running phone that has only been rooted. I am pretty sure this has worked on every galaxy phone before the s6 and the only reason you don't hear more about it recently is because of the success of towelroot. I am getting this phone on the 1st (so excited) and would like root but want to try samsung pay more.
If you are willing to help I need the following:
Be on a 100% stock samsung bloated system with root (absolutely no tweaked systems I need pure stock with root)
Install supersu into /system (supersu settings)
Make a system.img dump with adb or terminal emulator and upload it for me (as long as you do not dump the data partition no personal data will be dumped)
At this point I will make the tarball and upload it and have the person who made the system dump flash the tarball. If he/she boots up fine I will the need a volunteer who has not rooted and verified that knox has not been tripped on his/her phone to flash it and see if knox still has its warranty. Obviously the volunteer should go into this not caring if knox gets tripped.
To make things completely clear I need the following:
Somebody who knows how to dump with adb/terminal emulator and already rooted
Somebody without a tripped knox warranty who doesn't care if it gets tripped

Sorry guys, which signature needs to be applied? I found a guide to sign Windows modded drivers, I don't know if this can be applied here, too...
The real trick is getting it signed. There might be no easy way to do that unless the key method can be replicated to make signed binaries. This could be a samsung proprietery tool. That said I did find an interesting nugget of info hxxp://galaxys4root.com/what-is-binary-counter/ in the comments section.
HI,
I flashed pre rooted firmware 4.2.2 using ODIN on my Samsung I-9500 4.2.2. Then the status is remain same
Binary : Samsung Official
System : Official.
Then I installed Wanam apk to modify the UI, It asked me to download Xposed framework I grant Super user permission. Once It completed I checked the status
Binary : Samsung Official
System : Custom.
I flashed stock firmware 4.2.2 and did the reset factory reset. Then it changed to
Binary : Samsung Official
System : Official.
My question, Is the hidden binary count or knox counter triggered or not ?
If I updated to stock 4.3 Is the Knox Warranty bit 0×0 or 0×1 ?
Please help me.
The rooted aspect only seems to be possible provided nothing in the UI itself is changed? There is a trigger file in the rom. Something that obviously a Wanam install triggers. All that seems to indicate that it might actually be possible to have a pre-rooted rom and install via recovery. But considering the phone model referenced, its possible this particular workaround has been plugged. On the off chance that it has not. It might be the only viable way to do root without tripping knox. I imagine the existing stock roms with root preloaded however trip knox (I saw no indication of that in posts but I did not dig that deep).
If anyone can answer that in the affirmative or negative it might be worth noting. Will knox get tripped on a stock (but pre-rooted) rom?

2. Put phone into download mode. Power phone off then press and hold Volume down, home and power keys at same time until you see warning screen then let go and hit volume up one time.
3. Plug phone in and wait for drivers to install if necessary.
4. Open odin you should now see phone’s modem port highlighted in blue.
5. Click on BL tab and select correct sboot.bin that you downloaded above. Then click start.
6. When phone comes back on power off again and put into download mode.
7. Open odin again and this time select AP tab and select UniKernel file and click start.
8. That is it!!! When it comes back on phone will be rooted. To verify that knox has not been tripped go back to download mode and it should still say KNOX WARRANTY: 0 (0X0000)
NOTE: ITS POSSIBLE THAT THE FINGERPRINT SCANNER MAY NOT WORK, SO IF YOU CAN LIVE WITHOUT IT USE THIS METHOD OTHERWISE DONT.
Very interesting, definitely going to a keep an eye on this one. I'm not brave enough to be the first to try though!

You will definitely not be the firts to try this. It is an old guide, the first one was on the g925f model thread. I rooted my galaxy s6 g920f this way, and i didnt trip knox. I do not use fingerprint, so i dont care it is not working. Definitely try this.

Does anyone know if I restore to factory after this root method, will the finger print work again?
No, is necessary flash a stock firmware with ODIN.
Please say this works for AT&T variant on OF4
@UltraGamerHD Will you build the needed files for other Samsungphones like SM-G900F, too ?
Would be suuuper nice !

I didn't build the files AT ALL. This was leaked and I obtained this from Reddit.
WOW, great! Sadly that I have already tripped it
I'm new to Galaxy's, coming from Nexus. Is is possible with this bootloader to install a custom rom without tripping Knox? Or is it just for rooting the stock rom?
If i'm not mistaken, flashing custom recoveries or ROM's will trip knox no matter what. You can look into Flashfire by Chainfire for a better idea of a alternative .

You are mistaken, flashing any custom rom will not trip knox as long as you are on engeneering bootloader. I change roms a lot, my knox is still at 0x0, just keep the bootloader.
Oh, my fault. I was confused for something else..... Good to know tho.

Think this would flash onto a G890A OR does anyone have an ENG SBOOT for this device?
Will this work on AT&T variant??
This "engineering bootloader" ... what is it, a special bootloader for internal Samsung devs?
Thanks for requesting the engineering bootloader from me in order to copy and start a new thread about the same thing that I already have on my own guide...
@UltraGamerHD
Hello. Where I find Engineering Bootloader for SM-G925F?
Good Job

Galaxy S4 USC Unroot?

Hello,
I have a galaxy s4 on 4.4.2 that I rooted using kingroot a while back. It is a US Cellular SCH-R970. Knox has not been tripped. Under device status it says the phone is custom. This means I cannot update to 5.0.1.
My question is, how would I return the phone to official status without 1. Tripping knox, and 2. Keeping all of my data. Also, do you know if I can root with kingroot once I get on 5.0.1.
Baseband is R970TYUFNK1.
Thank You!
Hi,
Flash a proper complete stock firmware via ODIN. Firmware for R970TYUFNK1 is R970TYUFNK1 (itself).

Would you happen to know where I can find a download for that? Also wouldn't flashing that delete everything?
Thanks for all the help!

SamMobile, Samsung Updates, or via SamFirm app. I usually rely on SamFirm.
Edit: As long as Re-partition and NAND Erase All is unticked on Odin, it should be fine.
PS Note: You can install newer firmware over your current firmware via Odin, too.

It would be wise to backup and wipe data before flashing. Otherwise you might encounter problems.
And do not use kingoroot to root lollipop. It used to not work or cause problems. Use cf autoroot method, if your device is supported.

Problem is cf auto root trips knox.
If I flash R970TYUgoh2 would I keep knox at 0x0 and all of my apps? Then I can root with kingroot.

Yes, but backup is mandatory. About Kingroot, see again previous post.

Having knox triggered is just a bunch of crap from Samsung to scare you. Unless you actually use knox. Or if you are afraid from losing your warranty. Which is also crap, because, whilst reading the warranty file, I saw that it won't cover water damage, it won't cover a broken screen and a bunch of other stuff. The only thing it covers is actual hardware failure. And if the phone is new, that's pretty unlikely. Even if it does fail, Samsung has no way to see if knox has been triggered until they change your hardware and are able to boot up the phone. At that point they can't refuse to take it into warranty service anymore.

Wow, that warranty is a load of ****. Also the phone is over a year old so I'd doubt it's still under warranty anyway.
What would you recommend to make a backup? I don't have fast Internet at all (300 kbps down), so I think a local backup would be more efficient.
Thanks for all the help! Have a good Christmas!

Since it is rooted I suggest titanium backup to backup apps and data.

OK I flashed 5.0.1 successfully, all my data carried over. Now I need to root. Do you know where I can download the cf autoroot files for jflteusc or sch-r970 on 5.0.1?
There is a cf auto root thread in the general section. Or you could simply google "cf auto root s4".
Make sure to read the thread.

I got it, now on 5.0.1 rooted. Would it be safe to install cwm via odin?

cwm is outdated. Use twrp. And yes, you can install it via odin or other methods.

OK I have that installed now. I'm looking for some new roms and found that there are practically none for the sch-r970. Could I just use roms for the gt i9505 (jflte) or would this not work at all? I'm looking for a 6.0 rom.
JDCTeam AOSP has your device model on the support list. They have Lollipop and Marshmallow.
But you should be able to use other GT-I9505 roms too.

Under their downloads section they have 2 untagged files (doesn't say GSM or cmda) and one GSM (won't work). Will one of the untagged roms work?

Marshmallow roms have been split into gsm and cmda, due to changes in the radio. You have a cmda device.
The initial build of aosp marshmallow was for both cmda and gms devices. The newest build (the december 24th build) is split into two. Gsm version has been released but cmda version needs more work.
So you will have to download the 6th december build which was unified. Or the lollipop builds.
Lollipop builds have a different thread and a different link.
