Plex video compatibility - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone who has tested Plex and which video/audioformat who can direct play?
Standard in Android seems to be only x264 and aac audio.
Does mpeg2 dvd work for example or does the server start to transcode?
Is ac3/DTS passthrough supported?

[Q] Video Out question

How powerful is the Adam's video out. If I have an 8gb .mkv in 1080p, will the Adam be able to play it smoothly on a 50 inch TV? How about if that same file is playing from an external USB hard drive connected by USB.
Some of these factors don't count(File size, tv size).
If adam supports 1080p output any hd tv with the right connection (hdmi) will work. As for mkv it depends, mkv is just a container, depends on the codecs used for audio, video; anyway, the hardware is capable of outputting hd video, most other variables are in the software, and if the delivered software isn't enough, we will always hack it.

There are a few options.
- Google to find XBMC variants that includes HW acceleration
- Install a Plex server and app combo. It will transcode your 720p videos on the fly but the interface is very nice and supports many back end OSes
Be aware that the shutter via WiFi may be simply that the video bitrate is higher than your WiFi supports (consistently)
My personal set up to get reliable playback well away from my router is not for the faint of heart but I will mention it none the less.
Backed server:
- Ubuntu with a Web server
- Python script that creates Web pages of my video collection with metadata from MythVideo database
N10 apps:
- MX Player
- Boat Browser
N10 HW:
- micro USB OTG cable
- USB Gigabit Ethernet adapter
- Gigabit Powerline adapters connecting router to backroom
I did warn you it was extreme but it works without issues day in and day out even with 1080p content.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using XDA Premium HD app
This is the best explanation i have had, thankyou very much

No 5.1 surround play movies ?

So just installed my np, hdmi to tv then optical from tv to receiver. And the tv is not detecting 5.1 with google play movies and nexus player in general.
My tv passesthrough 5.1, and everything else works just fine (xbox, top box, blu ray) .
Am i missing something ? Setting or what not ?
Any help is appreciated
I can get SPMC (and XBMC Kodi) to pass the audio bitstream, only DD and DTS, I don't see any signs of DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD, the options are just not there in XBMC like they are in the PC version, maybe Android is not ready to bitstream HD audio formats?
But ... is the Netflix app supposed to do DD+ on the NP? I tried playing a few movies from Netflix that I know can do DD+ and the only audio options I see are 2 channels.
So far it's fairly disappointing that it's so hard to get bitstreaming to work correctly over HDMI. Gotta love HDCP.
Can you check if movies from the play store are working with surround sound ?
I tried a couple of movies from the Play Store and my AVR shows "Multi Ch. In" so it looks like it does PCM rather than DD+ bitstreaming. Plex also seems to do the same "Multi Ch. In", but the Netflix app is only 2 channels. I tried the same Netflix movie via a Vizio TV Netflix app and it does DD+ and also via an HTPC, so I know the movie is available in DD+, but I can't get the Netflix app on the GNP to do it.
I'm not a fan of the GNP thus far, it doesn't seem ready. Mine is being sent back most likely. Amazon has a sale on the Fire TV box for $69. If Netflix and XBMC/SPMC work right, that's all I need out of these boxes, everything else is a bonus.
Whatever i tried i couldnt get surround whatsoever. System wide, nothing gave me surround audio. Dont know if this thing needs a special connection method as opposed to a pass through the tv.
Has anyone had luck with surround audio? For any app ?
I think I may know what's going on: the optical connection doesn't have enough bandwidth to pass 5.1 PCM channels, there's enough for 2 channels only. Now if the NP sent say compressed 5.1 DD *and* your TV actually passed through from HDMI to optical (many TVs don't), you could get 5.1 on the optical. But it seems that the NP outputs 5.1 PCM over HDMI.
If your AVR has HDMI you can try connecting the NP directly to the AVR.

Nexus Player with H265

Hi guys,
finally some weeks ago Nexus Player was officialy released in my country (Italy): low price and official Nexus product suggest me to turn it into my personal media center. I'm using an old i3 notebook running Kodi, but i prefer something more compact, less loudly and with a dedicated remote: Nexus Player seems to have all these features, but searching on the net i'm not sure if it can play H265 smoothly.
Tipically all my media files are on a hd connected to my router and trough samba Kodi search on it: 99% of my files are 720P X265 (tv-show), 1% 1080p X265.
I don't care about 4k.
Someone can confirm that 720P/1080P x265 are smooth on Kodi-Nexus Player?
Thank you so much, sorry for my bad english
BYE!!!
Yes, I am able to stream to kodi and plex 1080p X265 files without issue. Even my larger (+10gb) files stream without buffering. That said, my NP is 5 feet from my router, so there's no interference.
Very good, i have tv on the same room of my router, so no interferences in my case too
Thank you metaljr81, can you tell me what have you installed?
Kodi X86 or ARM? Stock Rom? some tricks?
THanks!!
You need the x86 builds of kodi. I'd recommend joining the Kodi Alpha testing community to get the latest. Or you can do the nightlies from kodi.tv if you prefer the manual method.
CM12.1 here, but not necessary for kodi unless you use external storage for your NP.
Add fusion.tvaddons.ag to your file manager sources for all the good add-ons.

are these files you've downloaded in x265 or ones you've converted yourself? only ask because when I try HEVC files on my nexus player, it shows some pretty nasty artifacting that i don't see on my laptop or desktop. as far as I've seen, the nexus player has to SW decode, so router proximity shouldn't affect the playback on small files should it?

No Dolby Digital or DTS audio output?

I have a huge media collection on a 4tb external drive that used to be plugged into my LG 4K TV via USB 3.0 input on TV. I have an LG 300w 2.1 soundbar with subwoofer connected via optical from TV. when I press info on my soundbar remote it either says Dolby Digital, DTS, or PCM depending on the source audio.
Now that I'm using my shield as my media player all I get is PCM 2.0 sound. I've tried vlc and MX player and even some codec packs for MX player with no avail. My shield is running stock Android MM with Nova launcher not the factory firmware. Most of my media is video files h265, h264, mkv, mp4, avi, etc.
The simple fix is to go back to plugging hard drive directly into my TV again but I really enjoy the ease of file management that used to be a pain in the a$$. I used to use my unlimited data to download media then OTG it to a flash drive, once drive was full I would have to break out the dusty old PC with slow usb 2.0 and data dump 128gbs at a time to my 4tb external. My shield has usb 3.0, multiple inputs usb, micro, otg, etc.
Sorry for the rant but does anyone know how to get my shield to decode DTS or DD? The audio on all my files still work but only in PCM 2.0. Any help is appreciated.
maybe update shield to 3.2 and use mx player or spmc.
Dolby Atmos
Enjoy a home theater experience with rich Dolby® Atmos surround sound pass-through in VUDU, MX Player, SPMC, and SHIELD’s preinstalled Photos & Videos app.

I can't do stock lol I like full MM access to all playstore apps etc. Before I unlocked bootloader and flashed MM I still wasn't getting DD or DTS audio. My soundbar only has optical input so I can't test it with hdmi pass threw.
