Why is there no Auto Brightness Adjustment on US Carrier models? (Auto +1 etc) - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm talking about this:

I don't understand why Samsung devices have systematically seen this option removed on US carrier models since the S4 or even earlier. It doesn't make any sense. Especially given the dim screens of previous Samsung products, "Auto +1, +2, or +3" makes tremendous sense for those keeping them on Auto all the time. My HTC One was literally twice as bright as my S4 when both set to Auto and that noticeably negatively impacted my everyday viewing experience.
I propose we make this issue known to US carriers. If enough of us complain, we CAN get this added back in. I talked to both Sprint and Samsung yesterday. Samsung said it was a carrier choice. The Sprint CS rep agreed with me that this should be in, and forwarded my issue to the tech team, who are now hopefully aware of this. I haven't gotten around to calling them yet but I will. Any reasonable explanation for why this was removed?

Its a guess but i do know that screen brightness is the biggest battery hog culprit.. it could be that on a quest to obtain better battery life that the scale was changed.. just a guess....

If you are rooted, there is a way to enable it. Go to /system/etc and look for "floating_feature.xml" open it with a text editor and scroll down until you see the "auto brightness detail" change from false to true, save, and reboot. The +1 +2 detail settings will be under the display settings, not the notification brightness adjustor.

Install the LUX app

Another vote for lux app.. Far easier than convincing the carriers

It does not seem to work properly on note 4. It adjusts brightness only when you open the app.

Tip for JB stock ROM users.

I am far from being an Android power user. I don't use mods, skins or launchers and prefer to stick to stock ROMs.
The farthest I go is to root my device, given the fact that some apps I need either work better with it or won't work at all without it.
So you have an idea, just the other day I posted I couldn't figure what "Greenify" was good for since, as I understood it, If we have to enter the app to hibernate/de-hibernate the target apps we might as well just launch and kill them, as needed, only to be kindly enlightened by another user about the fact of life that some apps do still run in the background, even after we've killed them.
...Pretty "tech challanged", right?
...but, coming from this "restricted" background, I do have a tip to share with you guys after having tried some online suggestions to deal with the relative "sluggishseness" and low Quadrant benchmarks I was faced with, after having migrated to JB XSP.
Apps took up to 3 seconds to launch and I was having this kind of values in Quadrant:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I tried a bunch of stuff to improve things up. I removed a series of apps I rarely used, even some system ones, using SystemApp Remover and inhibited others like MacroDroid. Still, no improvements.
Until...
Today, acting on tip read online, I went to "Settings" ---> "Developer Options" ---> (Activate) ---> "Drawing" and changed "Window animation Scale", "Transition Animation Scale" and "Animation Duration Scale" from the default values to 0.5x.
I got definite improvement in launch response, general "sluggishseness" with Quadrant values jumping to this:
Happy Puppy now
Hope this helps!
XK
I tried your suggestion and here are my results
Before change
4488
After change
3446
Restored to original settings
4146
Sorry for lack of images but I am unable to attach them.
In my case those settings did not improved the performance it actually decreased it. This might be on a case by case scenario but a good tip nonetheless

Note the huge jump in the I/O score. Seems out of character with the other devices.

[LWP] Looking for live wallpaper users to test my background pet! (free & no ads)

I'm currently working on a very fun project called Bee Bro and my intentions are to have an amusing wallpaper pet, which could lighten up any day with silly animations and funny interactions.
It's free and there will be no paid version
It has no ads and will never use any ad service*
I think you might like the amount of permissions it requires
*In the future I might add a "Bee Bro recommends" section in settings screen for my own games and games of my indie gamedev
friends.
It's still in a pretty early stages and only has 4 animations, but there are tons more planned. Night mode is available for people, who prefer dark backgrounds and it does have a specific interaction. Automatic day/night cycle is already in my to-do list as well as some date/season specific events.
Battery usage
16FPS cap (looks crappy, but set as a precaution, will be customisable, when I'll be sure everything works fine)
wallpaper doesn't run when it's invisible (live wallpaper 101)
"sleep on pause" mode - bee will go to sleep every time wallpaper becomes invisible and stays static until user interaction
Wallpaper becomes static when battery reaches 10% and stays that way until charged (I'd like to have hard limit on 5% or 10% and allow user set it's own limit in the future too), would love to hear what you think about this
Hardest part so far: finding people, who could test it and give me some feedback, since that's always a great motivation and I can't work unmotivated! I understand that this subforum might not be the best place to post a thread like this, but, as you can imagine, the main "Apps & games" forum is more a symbolical place to post your project... The engagement there is around zero if you don't count spammy developers asking to trade ratings.
So, please, check it out and tell me if I'm going in the right direction!

Trick I use to save battery

I know some people won't want to do this, but it's something I do that I personally find helps with battery life. Nothing revolutionary, and some people won't want to but... different strokes for different folks. It's very tempting with this beautiful screen of ours to blast the brightness and get the most out of the Super AMOLED (or whatever they're calling it these days) but I've found if I'm in the same environment reading/watching videos/whatever to turn the brightness ALL the way down. Struggle with that for a few minutes while your eyes try to adjust, then turning the brightness up just a tiny bit will be (or at least seem) plenty bright. Anyway, combining that along with having rooted with Scott's CleanROM (I'm on Verizon) and my battery life has been golden! [emoji2]
Here's a screenshot of where I'll often have my brightness after doing this.

Seems really low, but I have no problem reading or doing anything at this brightness, unless I'm out in direct sunlight or something. Anyway, just my .02

This is not a trick.
Suggestion then
I use the slider on the left to turn down the brightness in mxplayer which is my de facto movie watching app.... Turn it to 15 in bright day time environments and down to 5 indoors or in dark scenarios. Otherwise the system wide default is +5 on the notification slider and auto. Able to cross 5.5 SOT easily with this much.
I have a trick to open the phone. I use the power button on the side or the home button on the front of the phone.

I've been wondering how to open the phone, thanks!
You should try out adaway! It's much more powerful than adblockplus, it actually modifies the host file. Also, try out lux if you haven't. It's seriously my favorite and most essential app. I don't know how I survived without it all these years.

[FIX] Yellow/Green/Red White Balance fix without Root. Yellowish tint , Yellow tint

Hello all, after getting my LG G4 yesterday I have noticed the screen on my unit exhibits a yellowish tint, especially whites look too yellow for my liking. Now, because of Boot-gate I don't want to root it this early just in case ( although I have a 607 serial number so chances of that happening are significantly smaller.)
So I researched some fixes, tested some apps and came to the conclusion that https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.uk.quickdoc.screenbalance app is the best solution if you are not rooted.
Because, unlike all other apps, it is not an overlay but rather uses the built-in accessibility service baked into android, it is much more accurate, is system wide ( so yes, the virtual buttons as well!) and is more energy efficient.
Now the problem is that functionality is pretty limited if you are not on the pro version. By any means , use ''your way'' to get the app because I love to support devs but asking 3 euros is just too much for a very simple app. Please support the developer however because without him we would not have had this amazing solution
My settings are as follows: (Please note that the screenshots are not INDICATIVE of the real thing, in real life it is much less blue.)

Before and After
Feel free to post your configuration as this is still not perfect, I would love to see them and try them out to come to that perfectly calibrated white balance
Tips and tricks: Use the LG G4's feature to pin the app, this way the app will stay even when you clear all
... ( add suggestions I will add them)
Hello Xdekker I got same problem too. Thanks for ur conclusion. I have SN 607 too and bought from Europe. Maybe our G4 production in same batch.
Then I downloaded the app, pin and block the notification. Its look much better now. I hope LG update the system to add white control in the developer option just like Nexus 5X.
Sorry for my bad English...

Px5h head unit panel rgb setting

May have inadvertently changed this in additional settings.
Can anyone advise what their default is or conversely what setting give the best result?.
Assuming it’s the setting for the screen (panel)?
However if it’s for the buttons I’m told this unit is fixed orange for the oem mercedes look.
It was trying to second guess that that made me fiddle with the setting [emoji51].
Screen looks nice but my work galaxy phone is more vibrant.
Hence some ill advised touching late at night after fitting it when me and my man flu should have been in bed.
Screen as is.

Here’s some further shots.
Pretty much got to grips with it now, all up and running including my reverse camera
Still have the dull screen though.
Any ideas if it’s a setting, some sort of potentiometer or a loose cable?.
Had good support off the vendor so far so not too concerned just would like it more vibrant and colourful.
Don’t think it’s that rgb setting as that was I think for the buttons
Here it is top is a screen grab, bottom is how it looks with my galaxy next to it to show the difference.
Any ideas?, I saw that the Joying have a potentiometer for screen calibration do these?
It’s a PX5, Erisin/Seicane/Whatever [emoji23][emoji23][emoji51][emoji51]?*
