I am contacting the lawyers who sued Nvidia about how they are handling the cracking - Shield Tablet General

I am very upset about Nvidia not commenting on the new batch of shield tablets cracking, even though they said they would not crack. The warranty is one year, so after that cracks from a known manufacturing defect will not be replaced by Nvidia.
I also am concerned that if I sell my tablet, the next owner will not be covered for cracks.
At this point, Nvidia should offer anyone a refund, if they want it.
I will be contacting the law offices of Nicholas Koluncich. They won the class action suit against Nvidia. I'm sure they'll love to find out Nvidia is up to their old ways again.

I have no idea what everyone is taking about with the cracked edges. Can you post a pic of the damage?

Sure. In this picture you can see a crack and case separation.

And this is a new one? Mine replacement one is fine. Even my first "cracked" one wasn't that bad. You're going to have a hard time convincing anyone that wasn't dropped.

They replaced mine in a hurry and no issues with the replacement. The corner in the picture is a scratch not a crack also I agree that it looks like a drop. I cannot believe it would separate that much on its own. My first one the back cover was a bit loose and separated like a 1mm but that picture is ridiculous.

On nvidia's website there are other who have had case seperation like mine. And that is a crack, not a drop.

This is the cracked thread the OP is talking about
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/766370/shield-tablet/cracked-edges/

Oh thats what everyones talking about. I get that sometimes but only when I drop it. You can just pop it back in ya know.

Aren't they offering to replace the ones that cracked?

Yes, but the replacements are cracking as well.

I really find it hard to justify a lawsuit with a company who so far, has done really well replacing defectives. Mine was never dropped yet developed two separate corner cracks (there's a screenshot of that floating around here somewhere). They had a replacement to me in 3 days and I simply shipped back the old one.

A class action would be in the future, if nvidia decides to screw us.
As for your replacement, from what I've seen on nvidia's site, if will eventually crack again. And, so far, they've only mentioned replacing cracked units for 1 year! For a known manufacturing defect!
They also have not said if 2nd owners will be able to RMA for cracks.

True. We'll have to see.

I bought one of the 16gig wifi models and had the cracking problem on two of the corners, and I was one of the lucky ones that had it replaced via RMA with the 32gig LTE model. I can say from my experience, I'm using the tablet much more intensively than I did with the 16gig model (I believe they attributed the issue to a mixture of a bad batch of materials used for the corners as well as heat from the tablet causing the cracks) and I have not seen any cracks on the replacement. If it still had the same issues, I for sure would have noticed them by now. Not saying all replacements/newer models won't, but just speaking from my experience. From what I can tell Nvidia has been doing everything possible to do things right and acknowledge, apologize, and attempt to correct when things go wrong related to their shield devices.

No cracks one replacement device either.

no, they did it kind of weird and chose 200 rma's at random for the upgrade which has already happened. so everyone that does it now will get the same model they send in for rma.

unperceptible crack
I just got my nvidia shield tab but i didnt know about the cracks until now, i checked my tab and i found a small unperceptible crack in one corner, i don't know if i should try yo have it changed because as some of you said i will get another defective tab, so what do you suggest me to do keep it or así for the changed? Is almost unperceptible so i guess they wont accept it until the crack get bigger.

You would think they would have addressed this issue by now

Nope. As much as it sucks for OP, I'd like to see what it looks like as well.
+1, would like to see the pictures. Also, how the hell did this happen?!
rock beats paper and pavement beats gorilla glass and lizard beats spock.
I am working to get the pictures up but I'm short on posts...
I figured with people getting their transformers bricked or broken by ICS
There would be some that would rather part with the unit than try and fix it
So I think it would be a win-win for both the seller and I
I get to fix my transformer on the cheap and they get some money for a broken device @[email protected]
If it was me, I would buy a new one and mount the old one to the back of my tv and buy a wireless keyboard.

Bricked or broken? No. Endlessly rebooting? Yes. But either Asus or a third party will eventually fix that. Nobody's going to sell working hardware to you because of a boot problem, or at least not at a price that would make repairing a run-over tablet sensible.
Just bin it and buy a new one. It'll be cheaper.
Let me rephrase it, Bricked or broken by flashing
Well, if it's bricked then there is no use for it but for parts.
That is why I'm hanging around forums to see if anyone is willing to sell for cheap
There are a couple of broken tablets in ebay but I've had much better luck dealing with people on forums.
on the flip side... I can post pictures soon >.>

And where did you see reports of ICS bricking the TF101? I haven't seen any...
most TFs (i think all) are still within manufacturer warranty...so if there were an epidemic of TFs bricking due to ICS upgrades...asus would still be responsible for em..
and i think even if out of warranty, a bad firmware update would require asus to fix the device.
anyway...pics or it didn't happen

Hey there,
I got the Nexus 4 in first ever batch luckily and it had a Camera rattling issue stronger than most other people's (see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78EGLJcPuoA)
I got that phone replaced and my replacement has been in my hands for 19 days now. This one has a different set of problems though. The first is that the camera rattle still isn't fixed, but it isn't nearly as bad as my original one. The second problem is that I've noticed a pixel that is a few shades lighter than the rest, but it can only be noticed on angles - looking straight on to the device doesn't show anything.
So what do you think? Should I ask for another replacement and see if 3rd times the charm?

as long as you have a backup phone and can wait for the rma to arrive do so
Im on my second phone and both of them has had that same problem in different areas, and drives me crazy so Im sending it back for a third. Is this common spread issue with other peoples? I think most all of them have it? I have very good vision so that doesn't help seeing these artifacts ether!
I have a feeling that these phones are just basically being transferred amongst you guys?
Most people are perfectly happy with their phone, a lot of people keep getting bad phones RMA after RMA , plus they don't even have enough phone to ship to people who already paid for it so... replacement phones must come from somewhere else, isn't it?
Will call them up today then.. what's also weird is that my money was returned for the replacement cost, but according to google wallet the transaction is still pending. Anyone know how long the RMA transaction takes to finally clear? I don't like the idea that they may take out $400 from an account that doesn't usually have $400 in it. #australian
EDIT: Done. Took 5 minutes on the phone and they said they'd get it sorted out straight away for me. Still waiting on the email with instructions but it sounds like it will be all sweet
I would've requested a replacement right away.
So it took 3 phone calls but I've finally got a second replacement on the way.
Hung up on them the first time
Called back and the rep said that they have to forward my information onto a specialist, they can't hand out free replacements anymore, then he never did.
Called back a day later and the lady helped me out in a few minutes, got my email with instructions from the specialist within half an hour
so is this an isolated issue? the last two have had this on mine? waiting for the 3rd and i have a feeling it will also have this defect.
My nexus 4 has the camera rattle. My first 1 also had the camera rattle (so I think it's just the design) My Galaxy S2 (ATT) also rattled with the camera some, just not as much. It's how the cameras are made.
Having a single pixel kind of sucks on a screen so small, but with so many pixels, even monitor and tv makers say you need so many dead pixels in a sized area to warrant a replacement. This is a 720p display and has as many pixels as some 40" televisions
A faulty pixel? C'mon, that's no reason to replace your phone. Almost every screen has at least one faulty pixel. And I believe almost everyone has the camera rattle, just like almost everyone has the speaker buzz (which you don't hear anyway unless you hug your phone with your ears).
My advice, just ignore it and learn to live with it. No device is perfect. No phone, no TV, no monitor. In a few weeks/months you will get scratches that are far worse than one faulty pixel, and you will have to live with that too.
I know the feeling of getting something new and wanting it to be perfect. When I got my first smartphone (Nexus S) I had two faulty pixels. I couldn't stop looking at them. But then I did. And I haven't noticed them since.
I bet that if you do RMA, your replacement will have the same or another defect.

I would RMA for faulty pixels, but certainly wouldn't for a rattle.
As a previous poster mentioned, it is peculiar that some users are RMAing 3 or more times whereas most users have perfect devices.
I think it probably says more about the user than the way that device is built or how RMAs are processed.

so are you saying that we are picky? or we did that to the display? Im not new to technology I know nothing is perfect, I dont really care about the rattle. However I like to look at a nice screen on a small screen with stuck pixels it stands out and bugs the crap out of me because thats what my eyes go to. I have had smartphones from windows phones when they first came out to the first android G1, ipad, ipod touch, whatever I can live with most defects just not pixels ones. So I was trying to gauge whether most everyone has stuck pixels or just a few.

Scratched Screen

Hey guys,
So I have my nexus 4, waiting for my (quite expensive) case and screenprotector to arrive - and of course I drop the phone. It lands screen first on ground (the back has the originial protector still on it, but it just has to be the front it lands on..). Luckily nothing is cracked, but it has hairline scratches.. On older phone I wouldn't even care, but I am sure you guys can sympathize how much it hurts on a 13 day device. I have a few questions:
- Any experience with returning it to google? It is within 15 days of purchase, might be worth simply returning it and then buying a new one. Maybe google will be generous and not charge me for the screen (unless you look at it under light, you can't even see the scratches..)
- Any experience with getting the screen replaced - either via official repair center or manually? I have replaced screens before myself, but always on an older phone. On this new device I am kinda afraid to do it.
- Any other ideas? Suggestions?
Thanks, hopefully somebody has some experience with this kind of things! (and hopefully nobody has this experience ever again )
When your screen protector arrives, just put it on. My experience is that the screen protector will make the scratches mostly invisible.

Then why is it a big deal? You really have no right to return it since you dropped it and now it has tiny scratches. Not trying to be an ass or anything but that is petty on your part. Put a screen protector on and you won't see them anymore.

You have no right to return an item YOU damaged. A company can refuse a return of an item if the owner caused the damage. That's no different then me buying the phone and shattering the screen then saying oh well its only been two days so full refund please.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I think that you should deal with it, get the screen replaced if you don't like it with scratches. The fact that people say return it within 15 days after you damage it says that they are cheap and hold no responsibility for their actions. Man up. If you damage it, pay and get it fixed or own it with scratches on it - if it were that important to you, you wouldn't have let it get scratched up in the first place.

So I know we have had disagreements in the past, but this is one of the more naive things I have ever seen. He has a right to request a full refund within 15 days for damage that HE caused? That's absurd. I dare you to buy any ~$350 device from Best Buy, damage it, and then demand a refund because you are in the refund period. Please let me know how that works for you.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Google requires a 10% (15%?) restocking fee on items returned within 15 days. Even if you return it, you will have to pay 30 to 35 dollars.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
To everybody talking (joshnichols189, VoiD_Dweller, and others) how I shouldn't return it:
The reason I said "Maybe google will be generous and not charge me for the screen" is not meaning "i hope google won't notice muhahahhaha", it means - maybe google will not ask for the restocking because the scratches are small and google very nice. The word "generous" is there for a reason. I didn't say "blind" or "stupid" or "unlucky"...
I have a full right to return the item. If it is damaged, and it is, google has a full right to charge me for the damages. If I decide to return the phone, I will be ready to pay for my fault of dropping the phone (literally, haha). I am simply hoping google won't do that - not because they won't notice, but because they will be nice enough.
To others - thanks for the advice. Does anybody have experience with changing the screen? One option is to use this current screen as a screen protector - I already scratched it, might as well enjoy it, and if it gets too scratched I would just buy a new screen (these guys are not too expensive, do you guys know if that screen is genuine LG?)

Naive? No. Within 15 days of purchase as stated by Google you can return the phone for whatever reason you want. You people here are not the judge, jury and executioner. Google will obviously examine the phone when it is returned, and if they feel it is not in satisfactory condition, they will not issue a refund. That is up to Google to decide. And there are many companies, including credit card companies that will refund for a given amount of time for accidental damage caused by the purchaser.

Screen Coating Issues - Please Check Yours and Post Here!

I've had my phone since Monday and have been noticing these two horizontal lines on my phone screen - one on the top left of the screen and the other bottom right. If I wipe them off they virtually disappear, but if I then put my finger over them they come back straight away. I think these are defects in the coating of the screen so that these regions attract fingerprints/oil etc more than the rest of the screen. Here are some pictures:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/2w6pcsrmm8d4b31/DSC_0416.JPG?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/zv68silgavv80q7/DSC_0417.JPG?dl=0
I have been extremely careful with my phone and haven't done anything that should have caused this to happen. Anyone else noticed anything similar?
I had exactly the same issue in exactly the same places! My thoughts were that it was glue from the build process! Anyway I returned it to the store and they gave me a new one!

Wow, good to hear I'm not the only one. The placement of the lines seems to suggest the screen was maybe passed through rollers during manufacture and these damaged the coating.
I too wasn't sure whether the marks were residue or missing parts of the coating. To test this, I applied a few small drops of water to the screen and they bead into nice droplets where the coating is intact, but when I apply water to the affected areas it spreads out along the line, kept in by the coating outside the region. Here's a picture: photo on dropbox
This is pretty conclusive as far as I'm concerned. I hope the online store I bought my phone from is happy to replace it!
Me too! (P.S. Hi Whirlpoolian )
I edited your thread title to try to attract others, hope you don't mind.
I thought I had dropped it on the screen and caused it. But I know I haven't dropped of bumped it on the screen.
So I think for sure this proves it's a flaw. Let's see who else has this, and what we can possibly do about it.
Please post which version of G4 you have so we can see if there are any patterns.
Mine is the 815 from Taiwan. I've wet the screen to highlight where they are on mine.
I've contacted the place I bought mine from to see what they make of it, as I feel this is a manufacturing flaw that should be replaced.

Yep, mine's an 815 from Taiwan too.
Another very easy way to check is to wipe the screen clean and then fog it with your breath. The affected regions show up very clearly.
I've also contacted the place I bought mine from... haven't heard anything back yet, I guess because it's the weekend.
Yeah. I've had it too. But mine is on right top, and right bottom.
I will try to go to LG service center in Monday. Mine in the dual Sim version.
Not seeing it on my H811 from Korea. Tried both the fingerprints and the water drops and couldn't find anything. (For some reason my breath won't fog up the screen - maybe I'm a zombie or something? )
Mine seems flawless. Yay.
Hopefully you guys will be as lucky as I was and get a replacement! If not, you might wanna try seeing if this or something similar works!

I had the same issues on my O2 UK handset. Lines across the screen equal distance from top and bottom.
Mine got swapped out at my door for a replacement which is perfect.

LG quality control seems lacking on the g4. I've owned several LG devices from the og optimus to the flex and g3. Usually this isn't prominent in LG threads

Same probleme over here... one line on the top left corner and 2 more on the right one...
I have the same issue, I got it home from buying it and thought I had somehow already scratched it... I've been kicking myself for a week now thinking how dumb I was. Time to take it back to tmobile today.

Let me know how that goes. T Mobile stores are a ***** to get a phone returned.. Even when the phones are obviously flawed they'll try to warranty exchange it or tell you to pay the 50 dollar restocking fee.

Same problem. Those lines appeared on 3rd day of usage. There's at least 7 or so users who have the same defect with their screens on russian phone community 4pda.ru
I'm currently trying to convince the seller that it is a production defect so that I can have the phone returned... It's not an easy thing to do in Russia but I will do my best.
Wow, thanks for the thread. I checked and I have two lines, one at the top and one at the bottom. Didn't notice it on day 1. I have the 815 from Clove.

Hm, maybe someone should make a list which modells from which reagion are having this problem. I have several G4s here and none has this issue, H815 o2 DE (Germany) batch. This batch was released just around the 8. june, o2 customers in Germany had to wait until then to get the phone, maybe it is only in the first production batch of the G4s.
I just shipped mine back to Clove. Will get a new one sent once they receive it.

Today i recivied a call from LG. I wil have a replacement in a few days when they confirm its a fabrication deffect.
Wow. I would totally send that back.
I have a Verizon G4 and the screen is fine. This is probably for the 815 international models

[Urgent Please] Screen cracked, completely unusable, what do?

Please don't take the mick I'm absolutely fuming, dropped my phone this morning and part of the screen has shattered. Now it's completely black and nothing I can do to make it work, the phone is on because it's still receiving messages. How screwed am I? I'm going abroad tonight and I desperately need some sort of phone I don't even care about the screen being cracked. I don't have Nexus Protect either. Thanks in advance
damn, where'd it hit?
aside from getting the screen repaired, no clue what to suggest. mustve dislodged something causing the entire screen to go black
Just over the bottom speaker. This is awful the crack isn't even that big, less than a quarter of the screen! I'm close to the edge right now I can't believe a phone I've had for just over a month does this the first time I drop it. WHY TODAY FFS
At this point you probably have to send it in for repairs. You want someone here to tell you something that doesn't exist.

I can't post links yet so I can't post a photo, but for a phone to be a paperweight after a fall and crack this small is frankly ridiculous, an iPhone will still work flawlessly even if the screen is utterly destroyed. And without Nexus Protect I'm now placed in a position where I can't even get it fixed, even for money? You can't even get Nexus Protect in the UK, does this mean that any UK Nexus user should just throw away their phone when it breaks?
I love this phone to bits but build quality like this is appalling
Sorry to hear of your misfortune, but you are looking to blame everything except the one place it lives, yourself, you dropped it (not deliberately), you have no insurance etc.
There is as much chance of an iPhone having an inoperable screen after being dropped as any other. Seen plenty of iPhones that work but nothing on the screen over the years, same as with other phones, so this is not unique to the 6P at all. As for Nexus protect, no it isn't available in the UK, but there are lots of alternatives, Bank's often provide cover for a fee, you can extend your house insurance to cover it, there are also 3rd party polices specifically for phones like Protect your Bubble.
I know you are emotional at the moment, but the phone isn't to blame for you not being properly covered if you should have been. Some consciously decide to take the risk, others get themselves covered. Some unfortunately choose to not make a decision, they can't blame others for that. Even having cover would not solve the problem of having it repaired in no time before you go away. If you need data off of it, have you rooted and installed TWRP?
Do you not have the old phone the Nexus replaced?
I know two people whose iPhone 5s and 6 suffered a 4 and 6(maybe) foot fall and it's display behaved the same way as it's doing on your 6P.
Yes it's my fault and yes I'm an idiot. This is my 10th post so I can actually show you the extent of the damage. I've never seen any other phone rendered useless from something as small as this

In all fairness I would expect any phone to crack the way I dropped it. It was only from around 2.5 feet and bounced off the carpet but hit the edge of a tile face-first. However I would also expect the phone to still work as it wasn't a huge impact. If every phone ceased to work entirely after the first drop people wouldn't pay £500 for it

Yeah, I have backups on the phone but I can't get my laptop to connect to the Nexus as I can't put my passcode in. And I sold my OPO as soon as the 6P arrived. Sod's law

Instead of trying to disparage the phone, deal with your problem at hand. Send it in for repair. That's your solution.
Furthering the point. Does anybody know of any decent UK-based repair centres that deal with the 6P?

Doesn't help you now bit once you have it repaired you could insure it for £7 pm, well worth it in my opinion.
Not aware of any repair stores that deal with the Nexus, apparently it's a hard phone to repair also so don't think it will be cheap [emoji19] [emoji19]

It is what it is. Your statements lead me to believe that you are very immature and demanding. You dropped your phone, you chose not to insure it and now you are upset about it when in fact you botched by breaking it and not having insurance. Hopefully it's a lesson learned but after reading your posts I doubt it.

Also depends what damage has been done in the inside too pal, I'll be honest I've dropped mine a couple of times and taken chunks out of the bezel I was really lucky not too smash the screen... Just luck of the draw I suppose

You made your decision already. Get an iphone next time since it is impervious to destruction.
I may be wrong, but that photo you posted looks like the screen got smashed by something blunt dead center with quite a bit of force. not the froce of a 2.5ft fall on carpet, then to a hard object.
You have no reason to lie, it's an anonymous forum, but the photo doesnt look to me to match the story. Ive seen multiple drop tests from 6+ feet and not much more than some cracking. That looks like a thin hammer was taken to it.
Really sucks, and repairs don't look as easy as other devices... Good luck, and whatever you end up doing, report back so others know where to go if in the same boat
That was my thought. That is quite a forceful blow shatter pattern. Not hugely surprising it has affected some of the electronics like the digitiser.
Hopefully the damage is limited to the replacement screen part.
I just saw the photo also. you can see the center of the blunt force that hit the screen and it circles outward. That wasn't a fall to the ground and a spiderwebbed screen.
