How to use on MetroPCS network - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've read through the forums and see that it's possible to use the Verizon note 3 on tmobile network. I want to use mine on the MetroPCS network. My question was is has anyone switched theres from Verizon to metro pcs and if so what are the steps involved?

Answer + another question
Hey there. I'm going to try and answer your question and then ask another related question.
I recently bought a 900v from eBay with the intention of using it on MetroPCS and then in Europe after a few months when I move. I'm currently using an international Note II on MetroPCS which works fine.
To answer: In theory, as far as I know, all you need to do to get your Verizon Note 3 to work on MetroPCS is get a plan and SIM card from them (they will need to register your phone's IMEI to the SIM card since they lock individual SIM cards to individual phones). After this, go to Settings > More networks > Mobile networks and change preferred to 'global'. You will also need to input the proper network name and APN (Settings > More networks > Mobile networks > Access Point Names). From here it should work.
Ok, now my question for whoever might know something about it. Since I bought my Note 3, I went to a MetroPCS store and had them change the registration from my old phone's IMEI to the Note 3. They did that, we switched the SIM and did what I wrote above and voice and text worked, but no data. The guy working there didn't know what to do, so I decided to have him just switch it back to my Note II and I'd take it to the better resourced 'corporate' store later.
In the meanwhile, I rooted and did what I needed to flash JasmineRom 2.4.1. Went fine and everything seemed to work fine. Then I took it to the corporate store. They tested it with a tester SIM first (not locked to a particular device) but couldn't get it to connect to a network and then the same with my SIM (which had worked before at least for voice). I just get the notification: "Phone Activation - This SIM card is from an unknown source."
Does anyone know if the phone has to first be somehow Activated with Verizon before I can change it to global and use other GSM networks? If so, how would I go about doing that as I'm not on Verizon, nor have I ever been. I have a friend who uses Verizon who might be able to help me activate it if really necessary, but if there's another way, do please let me know. If this problem has nothing to do with activation, and there's something else going on, I'm all ears as well. Thanks.

Problem solved for MetroPCS connection.
Just wanted to update that my problem was solved with no more trouble than calling MetroPCS (888 8METRO8) to have them register my old MetroPCS SIM card to my new device (Verizon Note 3). I had already played around with GSM and global modes and had manually input the APN and network name prior to calling. I had also tried to activate using *228 but that didn't seem to work... not sure if that is important but it was something I had done (with the MetroPCS card before calling).
To the OP: did you get yours working?
Edit: I suppose it is also worth mentioning that I didn't have to change any settings and I'm getting 4G LTE on MetroPCS.

So to confirm, it is possible to connect the Verizon note 3 to METROPCS network and get 4G LTE SERVICE. Will I need to adjust APN settings through the phone? Do I have to use a separate program to change those settings?
I'm going today to try to set this up. Thanks for the responses.

Ok everyone I have a question in reguards to using a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with Metro PCS. I've been getting the run around from Verizon and Metro. What I've done so far is got Metro PCS to type the Note 3's IMEI number in their computer to activate the phone (like they do with every phone). I put the SIM card in the Note 3, and it said something like "SIM card is from an unknown source" (it's not reading the SIM). The phone wouldn't work. No service despite them activating the Note 3 on my account. They told me to go to metro store, so I did and we tried a new SIM card and everything and it still didnt read it. I keep seeing people say we need to change the APN, but what are we specifically supposed to write in the APN box? Also, I see people saying metro has to do something with the SIM card, what exactly do they have to do? Can someone please help, and please give me the exact steps as to what I have to do to get my Note 3 activated and working with MetroPCS. I havent had a phone to use in days because of this bullcrap please help!

APN Editing

Hi,
I was thinking about purchasing a verizon Note3 however I read the APN for the data setting was locked out just like the Note 2 was. I am just curious is this true? Was it ever unlocked on the Note 2?

Unfortunately, we'll still need root to do this if it is locked out by default on the N3

You cannot change the APN setting with the Verizon SIM in the phone, the menu items are grayed out. However, if you put in a non-Verizon SIM the APN menu becomes accessible and you are able to add a different APN for the network of the new SIM provider.

will be traveling international this DEC and would like to be able to put in a local SIMCARD and use it instead of having to pay VERIZON extra for roaming charges..
any help would be greatly appreciated!
TIA

I am writing this with my Verizon note 3 from Ireland using a sim from the "3" network (three.ie). It works for voice, data (3g, no lte), and texts. My phone is rooted, but I don't think that was needed. So, it does work.
There is a little icon stating "non-Verizon sim", but everything works fine.

delete vzw apn?
I have a vzw note 3 I just switched to at&t and after much digging was able to find the proper apn for at&t. What I cant figure out is how to delete the old Verizon apn as it's grayed out. Does anyone know how to access this to edit or delete?
Is it bothering you that much?? Not sure who you could delete it but why is it a bother ??

Then perhaps if what you say is true, the OP got a bad device? Or the previous owner(if phone is not new) didn't properly remove their account from the phone and it will not reactivate. I'm at a loss then.
Perhaps the Verizon S5 doesn't support the bands for his carrier.

I would think it would still allow for GSM communications even though it's an unrecognized SIM.

He said he gets talk and text but no data. Its either the apn or compatability with the radios for data. My wife has the Verizon S5. She gets the unrecognized sim notification also but she has all the features working with a Tmobile sim, including 4gLTE data. I did go ahead and removed the setup wizard apk to permanently remove the notification.

You didn't do much of a search or you would have found other threads where this has been asked and answered.
The message comes from a Verizon setup app that makea no allowamce for the possibility that anyone would use a foreign SIM in a Verizon phone. Freeze or remove the app to supress the message.

I would run the Region unlock from the Market to get rid of that error message, I'm not 100% if it will make the I ternet work since I just tried an active at&t Simcard last night and it was the same case as your but without the error message you got

With any SIM you put in that's not from Verizon, you will get this message, even if you do a region unlock. As others have stated it has to do with the Setup Wizard. The easiest fix is to freeze the Setup Wizard with Titanium Backup. It doesn't affect the phone's functionality at all. I wouldn't deleted it though. I've frozen mine and I can use any SIM without getting the annoying message.
This is a deterent that Verizon puts on their phones in hopes they won't be used on other carriers. They're factory unlocked.
I've noticed recently that the "add apn" button is gone in Mobile Networks on 4.4.4. You need to go to Network Operators and run a search. Hopefully the APN's will auto configure. If not, check to see if the "add apn" button is enabled. If it's not, you'll need to root the phone, buy APN Manager Pro, and install it as a system app. Then you can enter your APN settings.

Help
I had same issue that my samsung galaxy S3 was showing sim is from unknown source and was not detecting sim then i gone to mobile networks and changed network mode to global and then created access point for my local network ( just visit website of network you are using there you will find Apn setting for android for that network ) and after creating Apn just tick that apn and network internet will also start to work
This sim card is from an unknown source
Ok I had the same problem but I got the majority of it solved. With a few simple phone calls. OK if you already have service with the ability to make calls and text. But can't get any Internet service. All you have to do is call the metropcs provider or go to a store. And ask for the APN code. I chose to call first but every person that answered the phone had a real bad foreign accent. So I went to a store and they did everything for me. No questions asked I even kept my same sim card. Now if you can't make calls or text they will have to take the imei number from that phone and simply add it to there system with sim card. And your good to go. All you have to do is make one call.

[Q] Verizon S5 using straight talk att sim?

Hello all,
I bought a Verizon s5 on eBay for $250 the other day. From my reading other forums, I thought that I could just pop my straight talk sim in and it would work.
Apparently that is not the case.
After some reading, I used towel root and was able to get the hidden menus to work , but I really don't know what bands that I should try to enable?
I have a straight talk sim that is set up for an att phone (works perfectly in my S4).
Thus far the phone doesn't recognize my sim at all. It just has a circle where the signal indicator would be.
The phone arrived with a apalachian wireless sim installed and it gets full signal with that sim.
I checked the esn with swappa and it appears to be good.
Any insight would be great. I'm new to all of this and really don't know what I'm doing.

What APN are you using?
I didnt bother changing the apn because it doesnt recognize my sim. It just has a circle where the signal indicator should be.
Global mode should work fine. The issue might have something to do with the Verizon system not recognizing the ST sim card. Even though the S5 is unlocked, you might have to call VZW to see if it's a privisioning issue. You can check ESN with them too because it could be bad. Good luck and post back if/when you fine the answer.
I am running the same exact setup. Works great for me. Including mms. U should have done a factory reset before rooting. Either way. ....make sure it's in global mode under settings more networks/ network mode. Then download using WiFi since u don't have data yet, straight talk data settings from Google play store. Hit home button open data settings, follow instructions. Good luck.

Wait... you put an AT&T sim in your phone? This is a Verizon forum. If I misunderstood, please tell me.
Just to be clear because you didn't state it in your post, you must unlock your phone prior to using a non-Verizon SIM. You can sometimes get these unlock codes from Verizon but you can also buy them online. I've used GSMLiberty.net with success before. After that, you should be able to pop in your SIM from the new carrier and begin using it right away. In some cases, you may need to manually add the correct APN for your carrier. Find these settings under Settings > More networks > Mobile networks > Access point names. Click the little plus icon in the top right and manually enter AT&T's APN information. You may need to Google that as I don't know AT&T's APN info.
I use my Verizon S5 on T-Mobile's networks with absolutely no issues, I assume it would be a similar experience for AT&T as well. For me, I put my T-Mobile SIM card in and could make calls and receive texts, but mobile data and MMS was not working properly until I manually added the correct APN information. After that, MMS, 4G LTE data and everything is working flawlessly.
You do not need an unlock code for a LTE Verizon phone. These phones are already unlocked. One must set the correct APN.
Do not buy an unlock code!
I have used my Verizon S5 with att and t-mobile.
Good luck.

Thank you for your posts. Most of the phone works. When I leave a wi-fi area my phone goes to emergency calls only. When I go back to a wi-fi area the normal call service works again. I'm new to verizon and samsung. Wanted to use straight talk because i didn't feel like paying a fortune for service. I'll get it figured out some way.
Thank you again

[Q] Using Verizon Galaxy Note 3 International

Can someone Please help me figure out why I cannot get service on my Verizon Galaxy Note 3 when I'm traveling or specifically in India. I thought Verizon Note 3 is world unlocked out of the box!!! Am I wrong?
BACKGROUND:
I have successfully flashed my Verizon Note 3 to Boost Mobile so that means I used a Samsung Galaxy Prevail as my donor phone which means I changed the MEID # of my Note3. I have also successfully rooted the phone and have also installed Beanstown106 leaked version of KK 4.4.2 on the Phone with the latest Safestrap and it works fine as far as I can tell. I used the instructions from the following thread to flash my phone to Boost; just FYI:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060085
QUESTION:
I try to insert the GSM SIM card for Vodafone carrier and it's unable to connect to network even though I added the correct APN settings. So does this have anything to do with me changing the MEID# on my Note 3, is this why it's not connecting to a network?
I kept getting the error message that "This SIM card is from an unknown source" So I disable the setup wizard 1.0 using nobloat app and it got rid of that message. I'm still unable to connect to a network?
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to fix it or can tell me what the problem is?
Or if there's anyone that has used the Verizon Note 3 overseas successfully that can tell me what I'm doing wrong?
purchase a local SIM from Airtel with a 1GB 3G package and 200 minutes of talktime for about 700 rupees ($10 or so)!!
When adding the new SIM you will see message "Non-Verizon SIM detected" but apart from that voice should work just great. Go into the APN settings the + now active and add in the new APN settings for Airtel. After you do this the internet will start working and you will be able to get H/H+ speeds there.
So yes, Verizon 4G LTE phones are truly unlocked for oversees use and you can just pop in a foreign SIM and go no worries...

Yes it may very well have to do with a IMEI change. I didnt think it was possible to change the imei.

My mistake, I meant I changed the MEID# not the IMEI.
But apparently you can change the IMEI# of the device as well, allegedly according to the following thread. I never done it myself.

That could easily cause you issues if your carrier can't understand the identification information your phone is providing the tower.
To be safe keep a log of what you have changed that way if it is worse you can know how to go back or what you have played with otherwise as with myself once time passes I completely forget all the details.
