Protection insurance options available - Nexus 6 General

For those who passed the stressed and nightmare with the pre-order and ordered your new giant beauty. It is time to talk about the protection insurance we can get for our new gadget.
I, personally, don't like cases at all. I like my phone to be "naked" because I always like to get protection on my phone especially if I paid full price like my last 5 phones! The Nexus 6 is already beautiful and giant, and it will fall of your hand no matter how much careful you are. Putting a case will make it humongous! I am pretty sure that there are some members agree with me about not having cases on their phones . All my previous phones I bought were from BestBuy because of their awesome Geek Squad protection with $0 deductible and no limit for the claims (I know because I used to work their). However, they stopped the $0 deductible last September! They make it $150 delectable! It is time for me to find a new protection insurance for my new toy which cost me as everyone else $700+
Options are:
I know Square Trade will offer a protection for devices that purchased from anywhere. Which costs $5/month, 2 years for $99, or 3 years for $129 with $75 deductible. They have good reviews out there, but I have deal with them before.
On the other hand, Motorola site will offer protection as soon as they have N6 available like Moto X, but we don't know if they will have one version that works with every carrier like Google Store or not. Nothing for sure right now. Motorola will provide Moto care for phone that purchased from their website. Don't know the price yet! $129 for two years
Another option here:

$138 initial cost for 2 years, or $69 for 1 years, (auto renewal an option) and it only has $50 deductible. They cover everything, including stolen devices, except for lost phones, nuclear war, or government seizure.

I don't know if there are any options for us out there if you buy from Google Play Store.
Please share information you know for everyone.

If you can get Motorola's protection plan, that would be the way to go. I have it on both my Moto Xs. It's $85 up front and I think only $35 deductible, and they do advanced replacements.

That looks nice! I like paying upfront vs monthly. The deductible is very reasonable too!
Have you tried it before? How fast and reliable are they with dealing with claims?

I like Squaretrade. Next day replacement, only $100 for two years and still a pretty low deductible.
Theft isn't covered, but your homeowner's/renter's insurance likely already covers theft of a cellphone even when outside your home.

I have not used them before but they seem to be very well rated with no negative reviews that I can find. I am currently running without insurance since I have a Nexus 4 and a device replacement for a new phone is not much more than Insurance + deductible. But since I will bet getting a $700 phone I will be getting insurance since the total replacement price will be less than half of the price of a new phone. That and I will be more confident using it without a case which is very appealing to me.

If you have home owners or renters insurance add stuff like a cell phone, camera equipment, jewelry etc on as a rider.
I insure about 17k of equipment including ipads etc for 22/month though state Farm.

Anyone know how Assurion from VZW (TEP) might work on this phone, particularly if VZW doesn't actually carry or sell it?
I know I asked when I activated my Moto X off contract as I wanted to be sure that I kept unlimited data, and I asked how the insurance works since I bought it from Moto. The rep told me it would work fine, and I'd get a code to customize a new one if I made a claim. Not sure how legit that is/was.

Not very legit at all. Just went through that with the gf's moto x. It was customized and bought through motorola. Asurion told us they would send a comparable phone which they stated was a samsung s3 because they didn't have and moto x in stock.

How much will be Moto care on our Nexus 6?.....

Motorola is only allowing MotoCare on devices purchased from them. Not from Google or any carrier. I went with Squaretrade but I'm calling my insurance agent to see if it's covered under my renters insurance.

Maybe it's just blind hope, but I have a feeling that policy is going to change. They let you get Moto Care on every other device eligible for it even when bought from other retailers and seeing as how they initially said it wouldn't be available for the Nexus 6 at all, I'm inclined to wait for it to make its official announcement before I go for SquareTrade.

When my sister lost her customized Moto X, Asurion sent her a differently colored/customized one. She then sent it back to Motorola (as per Asurion's instructions, because Motorola is very cool about exchanging customized phones you're unhappy with) who exchanged it for a new Moto Maker code. It was actually pretty awesome because instead of getting a refurbished phone, she got a brand new one from Motorola.
As for the s3 replacement with your girlfriend, you/she should have made a bigger stink about the s3 not being the phone she wanted AND INSURED. My sister did that when Asurion said the Droid Razr Maxx was out of stock and they offered her 3 "comparable" phones. She told them how x, y, or z specs (camera, ram, screen size, etc.) weren't as good as the phone she had, and they ended up upgrading her to the Droid Razr Maxx HD. I love her, but that ***** loses so many phones haha.

Yea, i ended up taking a chance and sent hers to moto for warranty repair (it had fell in water). Moto had it for 2 weeks. I called twice and asked for status, each time the asked me what the tracking number was for the return shipment. The first time i was out of town and didn't have it on me, the second time I was able to provide it to them. They sent me over to the repair people who again asked for tracking and i gave it to him. He put me on hold for a few, came back and said he was going to email me a moto x code. So we ended up getting a 2nd gen for free. I think they lost her phone haha

Exact same thing happened to me. Sent my Dev Edition in after one of the antennas got disconnected or something. It simply wouldn't connect to LTE no matter what. A week later, still no phone, no word from Moto. Long story short, after escalating through multiple supervisors, I finally got them to admit that they lost my phone and they had no idea where it was. Ended up overnighting me a new DE. On the other hand, I did an online warranty claim for my DROID MAXX and that whole process could not have possibly been smoother.
Edit: This was also after they told me my warranty was void since I unlocked the bootloader. That was another hour escalation with a supervisor...

Phone Insurance

So tell me, does anyone have insurance on their "rooted" Nexus one? I'm thinking of getting one for mine, but not sure if T-mobile provides it, or is it a good idea to get it from them, if ever. Coz they don't carry the device.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
I have insurance on my Non-Rooted Nexus. You can get it from t-mobile. But i dont believe you can have insurance one you root the nexus one. I believe it voids the warranty. I may be wrong. Heres some info:
Is PHP (Premium Handset Protection) available for this Nexus One?
Yes, PHP is available for the Nexus One.
How much does PHP Insurance cost?
PHP Insurance is $4.79 per month with a $130 deductible.
How long do I have to add PHP to my account?
To qualify for PHP insurance you must add the insurance to your T-Mobile account within the first 14 days of purchase.
Great News! Asurion’s Premium Handset Protection offered through T-Mobile is available on the Nexus One. For $4.79 per month, customers are protected from loss, theft and damage – even screen damage or water damage. There is a $130 deductible per approved claim, much lower than the full retail of $529. Asurion will replace your Nexus One with . . . a Nexus One. As with most buzz-generating, hot new phones, inventory availability can be an occasional problem. Its not that Asurion doesn’t want to replace your Nexus One with a Nexus One, we do! Should there be a brief inventory problem, Asurion will offer a few different options to affected customers.
I have insurance on my ROOTED phone. You can have it. While it is true that rooting voids your warranty this has nothing to do with insurance. So look at it this way. I have a rooted phone and I loose it. I file a claim as loss is covered under the insurance. How on earth are they going to know it was rooted? Make sense.
The other above info is what I was told.
One thing to note. I had insurance on my G1 that was something like $6 / mo when I transfered that to my N1 it went down to the $5 /mo. This is because T-mobile would extend the warranty on the G1 since it was one of their phones. They don't do that on the N1 since it isn't theirs. That is why it is a little cheaper.
As for how it is replaced since T-mobile doesn't have the Nexus. I was told that the insurance company was getting some for replacements. Until then if you had a claim and they didn't have any you would go directly to Google and order a new one. You would be responsible for the full upfront cost of an unsubsidized phone. They then would cut you a check for the phone minus the $130 deductible. Make Sense.
Oh also a point on the 14 days to activate insurance. This is also true however. Lets say you let the 14 days laps. As long as you haven't rooted your phone (that would have voided the warranty) if it is ever replaced by the manufacturer you then have another 14 days to activate the insurance from the point in time you get the replacement. That is how I got insurance on my G1. I forgot to call back in the 14 days and then couldn't get coverage. Then my home button died, T-mobile replaced it under warranty, I then had them activate the insurance. Also if are under insurance and if you have a replacement under warranty I would be sure to call T-mobile. Since that was likely taken care of directly through Google or HTC they may not know. Of course if you had an insurance claim for say water damage that they tried to deny because the SN didn't match what you originally bought you could say "Oh, did I mention that the water damage happened when it fell off the boat in 300' or water?" I must have written that SN down wrong and what you have on record must be right.
Hope that helps....
as a point of interest, state farm charges me $30 a year for insurance on my nexus one, with ZERO deductible..
that's $2.50 a month folks...
and they don't care if it's rooted, or you used it to hold up your car when you changed your oil.
Thank you for the information I'm goin with state farm.Hahaha.
Hmmm... Called Tmobile, they said my Nexus is currently insured... I made them double and triple check it, but they were positive bout this, I guess my insurance from my G1 is automatically transferred to the N1.
I still thank you for the response guys!
i'd cancel it and get a real policy that costs half and doesn't have a deductible... but that's just me..

sure, the difference is only $30 a year... over two years an extra $60 on the price of the phone, unless you include the deductible, and it's an extra $190.. 1/3 of the cost of the original phone..
The original poster should call T-mobile again. As I mentioned in my post that the original insurance that I had on my G1 was more expensive. They may have changed it from the insurance that is something like $7/mo to the one that is about $5 ($4.75 or whatever). I got my phone early on so it is possible they are getting better at automating these things. Everyone was still trying to figure out this new Nexus thing when I got my phone.
I have to call my insurance company anyhow so I am going to ask about phone coverage. I have USAA though not State Farm. Even if they don't offer it I wouldn't switch to State Farm. We are saving $1800 a year and have more coverage and a lower deductible on our house compared to State Farm. My parents are now switching over to USAA. He said they will save $900 a year on their 4 cars/truck.

Insurance, squaretrade, or no insurance. Your thoughts please.

Hi everyone, I, just like many of you, am enjoying my new droid x. This is my first android phone, and for the past three years i've used an iPhone. At&t's coverage sucks and I was tired of jailbreaking my phone to get it to do what I wanted to do so I switched and am quite happy i did so far.
The one thing I will say is Apple has outstanding warranty support and if you drop the phone in water it only costs $199 for a replacement, which is expensive but a far cry from say $600. I'm not quite sure what to do when it comes to the droid x. Has anyone ever used asurion and have any issues with them? Also how is motorola when it comes to dealing with defect issues? I'm considering going with squaretrade and was wondering what everyones thoughts are on all this or if I should even bother with insurance period. Generally Im gentle with my phones but it would suck to have to pay $600 for a new one should I drop it or what not.

I too wonder what the best option is. I hate to pay another 10 bucks a month but I know I would hate it much more trying to replace an accident on a 600 dollar phone.
Try some of the bigger car insurance companies. I know here in ky state farm will insure the iphone for 25 dollars a year. I haven't asked about the droid x yet.

asurion
here is the low down on asurion its $6.99 a month for accidental coverage with a $90 deductible on smart phones and 50 on others there is also a 7.99 a month plan that is the same but adds one year of manufacture warranty on the device. that being said i have 4 lines of service with verizon 2 of which are smart phones and i carry zero insurance im fairly careful with my phone and am very good at convincing tech support its is a warrenty issue but if i where to carry an insurance plan i would carry the 6.99 for a year then take it off thats 84 dollars a year and if its replaced its 174 you can get a certified like new phone from verizon for around that cost moto droid 220 so i think its a racket gl

Asurion is good but not cheap. I've used it a couple times over the years and it is always fast and easy. You get a brand new phone (not a refurb) as you should for the money they charge. They also replace any accessories damaged/lost/stolen with the phone.
So if you are like me and prone to accidental drops here and there no matter how careful then it is worth it.
Trade Square Droid X 2 year Insurance $99

Once you file your claim and everything processes, i usually receive my phone within two-three business days (a week max)...
I've heard mixed reviews on Square Trade, but mostly positive in my reading. I got a warranty on my Flip Camera through them. Haven't had to use it yet (and hopefully won't) but I'm hoping for the best if it ever comes down to it.

This phone is available from Amazonwireless for $0.01 with a contract

Seriously just found it today (after reading an article that says its $50 on there), I gave it a shot and if you do a new VZW contract or do it as an upgrade the phone is $0.01 . Of course I STILL can't get it because my upgrade isn't for another month and no matter how much I ask VZW to do it early they won't (my Motorola Droid's keyboard is literally falling off as the glue holding the keys on melts from the heat of the processor, I tried gluing back on with no luck it melted away).
I'm sure this deal will still be around then but I'm getting antsy, and picking my keys up off the ground is annoying.

On a side note, the earliest that VZW will let you upgrade early is 1 week before your upgrade date.
Try and ask them that if they can hold the offer price for you when you upgrade in a month.
My carrier had an offer that saved 380~ dollars plus the savings from contracts, and it only lasted a week. Good thing my brother and I got ourselves brand new phones each
My courier let's you upgrade 4months in advance if you threaten to cancel the contract and resign with another company. Maybe that's what you should do.

Spoke to them today and they are giving me an early upgrade (good news) but I need to do it at the VZW store (bad news). VZW currently has it for $99 which is still a good deal (and I will probably get a $30 credit bringing it to $69) but to get it for a penny would be better. I'm going to call Amazon in the AM to see if they can see it on my account and do it for me, otherwise I'll head to the store and see what I can do. Considering how annoying the keypad screwing up on my droid is I may just eat the cost to have it a month earlier than planned.
Just to give an epilogue to this story, Amazon would not do the early upgrade (I don't blame them, it wasn't their authorization). Went to the VZW store, paid $150 with a $50 mail in rebate, no new every 2 credit (would have had to wait till Sept) so I lost $30 there, then sold my OG Droid to a recycler for $61 so my net cost is $39.
If I had waited I would have gotten the phone for a penny and made back the phone recycle cost (however I noticed those fluctuate a lot so who knows if I would have gotten $61 in a month, It was $80 2 months ago!). So really my net cost could be more, but my old phone was pissing me off to no end, so the price and the fact I'm having a blast with this phone already made it worth it.
PS I almost walked away from the deal because of the difference in price but realized in a month I don't even know if this phone will be available. They literally had 1 in the store, covered in dust and the Verizon guy said hes never even had anyone ask about the phone let alone buy it.
I bought my XP from Amazonwireless for $50, renewed my 2 year contract several months ahead of time
Amazon wouldn't let me do the purchase until I called VZW and told them I wanted a new phone and would get it through Amazon. My contact/every 2 wasn't over until 10/15/2011 or so. I called VZW, they lifted the resitriction and I purchased the phone from Amazon for $50. All I told Verizon was that I was going to get a new phone and renew my contract, I guess it helps that I'm a 10+ year customer.
Then I sold my OG Droid with GPA15 on ebay for $120.

Hmm I've been with them for 10+ yrs as well, but they wouldn't budge on that. You must be more persuasive than me. Ohh well, for $39 I can't complain.
true, a deal is a deal
They did this for me when I purchased my Droid from Amazon a few years ago also. I'm not aggressive or anything when I call, I just bring up a few facts (never late, long time, renewing) and they cut me some slack.

Uh, I suspect that's illegal. They can't warranty something and arbitrarily choose a substitute just because they feel like it, unless it's up front in the terms and conditions. Just like if Motorola warranties my Moto X, they can't arbitrarily choose to replace it with a RAZR or something.
Where'd you get this information?

Funny, look at this from their agreement:
2. Our Options
At our option, we or the Authorized Service Center may provide substitute equipment or repair the Covered Property with substitute parts, of like kind, quality and functionality, that:

b. Are a different brand, model or color.

I guess that's not an insurance I would ever want to buy. Basically they're saying it's their discretion as to what constitutes a similar substitute. Screw that.
Basically they're saying they could give you something that's not even a Moto x. LOL
Always read the fine print.

i had an awful asurion experience with my galaxy nexus. they kept sending me faulty refurbished pieces of $hi7. One with a broken charge port, another with faulty radio and broken speaker, and the last one with way spottier connection than my first galaxy nexus. I finally gave up sending them phones and dealt with the connection until buying the moto x now. i'll never use their service again. i've just decided to put money into a savings every paycheck towards my own "phone insurance" plan.
This goes both ways though. Back in the day my buddy had a DROID Eris. It reached its EOL and he cracked the screen. Asurion replaced it with a brand new DROID Incredible as it was considered its substitute.
I buy phones unlocked and don't insure them. Overall just doesn't seem worth. TMo insures not for free though which I love.

This goes both ways though. Back in the day my buddy had a DROID Eris. It reached its EOL and he cracked the screen. Asurion replaced it with a brand new DROID Incredible as it was considered its substitute.

That's typically how insurance works, though. Usually the verbiage is "equal or greater value" - a regular Moto X is not equal or greater value than a developer edition.
I purchased my warranty through squaretrade and haven't had to use it thankfully. I'm on verizon and bought the developer edition. I called square's customer support and expressed concerns about my phone being replaced with a regular version and the agent actually changed the name of my device to 'Motorola Verizon Device' so they would be forced to read my receipt and see it was a special device. Hopefully this will help should I have to use their service.

I agree. Their line of thinking though is its a developer device and all they are going to do is replace it with a regular one. My recommendation to anyone considering insurance is to just put away $10 a month for the entirety that you own your phone. If you don't use it, awesome take the money and get a new phone with it and then repeat the process.

I generally don't think it's a good idea to insure things that you can afford to replace.
Insurance as an industry wouldn't work if it was a good bet, so it's something you should weigh. Are you the type to break or lose a phone? Is it really going to be hard for you to scrape up a few hundred bucks if the worst happens? Maybe that's a good reason to buy insurance. For a majority of users, though, who aren't regularly destroying phones and have normal credit cards and savings accounts, it's almost always going to be a better choice to replace a phone as needed (or buy a good case) instead of buying the insurance.
You buy medical insurance, or life insurance, or car insurance, because most people can't even begin to pay for those things without it - or the risk is so high if the worst happens. Phones? Laptops? Televisions? Replace as needed unless you really can't afford it (and if you can't afford it, maybe you should evaluate if you need the item to start with).
That's why don't buy the useless phone insurance people. The amount of money you pay monthly and deductible, you can as well pay for a used phone. Also you pay that for every phone you own, so basically throwing free money at useless insurance. It's not that phones cost thousands of dollars. Less than $650 any flagship, Moto used can easily get around or below $300.

That's called betterment, not insurance. Insurance is there to get you back, as close as possible, to where you were before the loss/damage/etc. Think "like kind and quality".

Yeah, people don't seem to understand how bad a deal phone insurance is, especially for a less expensive phone like the Moto X.
7.99*24+100 deductible if you do break and you're already at 300 bucks. The only conceivable way insurance makes sense is if you break a flagship phone the first week of ownership.
And that's why I purchased the Motorola insurance. Lower deductible and only $85 for the warranty. They just won't replace if it's lost...I've NEVER lost and of my unlocked bootloader phones using avast

I tried to purchase the insurance through Moto when I got the phone, it went through just fine but I got a call the next day from them saying it was a mistake and they couldn't insure the phone so I had to sign up for Asurion. Now, you an be sure I'm going to hit VZW and remove that from my monthly charges and just take the money that I would be paying and put it into savings JIC.

When I ordered mine they said I had 14 days to get the insurance. So I didn't pay for it till about 10 days. I of course unlocked the bootloader the first day I received it lol...
Thanks to this thread, I removed the asurion insurance from my verizon account.
Only used it twice or so since I've had service with verizon

Insurance for our Nexii?

I was doing some googling to see if there was any insurance available for our new phones like Asurion which I have on my S6 w/ Verizon.
I came across this site http://www.worthavegroup.com/product/cell-phone-insurance/ and I was wondering if anyone one has used them before.
They cover anything and everything that can happen including lost/theft.
For 1 year of coverage the cost is $64 and has a $50 deductible.
Seems like a great deal just never heard of anyone using them before.

looks like some poor service reported here https://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.worthavegroup.com but overall good
Can you keep Asurion that you have through Verizon ? Not sure how that works
Have yet to file a claim (*knock on wood*) but I have used Squaretrade for quite some time.
A little bit of googling and get you 25% to 30% off making it ~ $70 for 2 years of coverage.
$75 deductible I think.

I've had Squaretrade on multiple devices.
FIled a couple of claims and it was pretty painless.
Been using Squaretrade for years. Claims process is very easy.
I went with Nexus Protect this time though.
Does Squaretrade cover lost or stolen?

I used them for like 3 years, but I never had to file a claim. Everything was easy. Even switched insurance to new phone without paying more when I got it.

Nope,
You can only insure a phone that Verizon sells in their stores. So you could technically buy someone elses Samsung S5 for example and put it on your line and keep it insured. You just cannot bring a phone that was not sold by VZW and insure it.
If you already have an old phone, you are also eligible for an additional Family plan discount on Square Trade. No experience with these guys, but Square trade has been awesome for me with next day shipping or walk into a store to get most of the issues resolved (For Walk-ins, you dont have to pay any deductible, if you use one of there preferred stores)
coupon code for smartphones?
Hi all,
Does anyone have a squaretrade code for smartphones? The ones I have can not be used for phones. It's weird, because I was always able to find one before to use on my smartphone.
Thanks.

I bought through then for my 6p, but I was unable to find an coupon codes that worked. I even signed up a junk email address of mine to get the coupon they send out, and it explicitly said "not valid on smartphone plans" in the fine print.
Squaretrade is great, just understand that they ARE NOT a phone INSURANCE plan, they are a PROTECTION plan.
Insurance covers loss and theft, protection plans only cover damage.
I also got squaretrade with the accidental damage protection. $99 for 2 years with $75 deductible. Covers devices up to $999. Only catch though like the_hustleman says it does not cover loss or theft. Can't really blame them though. That's how they keep great rates. Just keep your phone on you at all times.
Also like Squaretrade for device insurance....
I'm just using one of my savings account as interest. I'm not against insurance. But we should receive at least 50% back or be vested but to pay and get nothing.

What insurance gives you is peace of mind. $99 to join and $75 per incident is doable if I break my phone. Paying another 600 outright ain't happening. and would cost more anyways. That's just how insurance works. You pay a small amount in a pot that can be used by all contributors to the pot in case they need it. You don't get to take your money back out of the pot after 2years just because you did not use it. You were covered for those 2 years.
