[Q] Wi-Fi Antenna - damage - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I may have ****ed my Wi-Fi Antenna or hopefully some sort of software setting.
I tore down my Note 3 to examine the ear-piece cause it stopped working. However after putting everything back together again, I noticed the Wi-Fi range has DRASTICALLY reduced. To the point where if it is more than 2 meters away Wi-Fi will not work. However if I am right next to the router it works swimmingly.
The Wi-Fi reception signals reflect this as well. Used to get okay strength from everywhere within the house (even upto 10m away through bricks etc) and now pretty much range is useless.
Was wondering if anyone else had experience similar problems after tear downs? and if maybe there is a setting that auto resets when you unplug the antenna. I had absolutely no problems when disconnecting it and looking at the headers again, they seem to be okay.... no physical damage noted. Just wanted to get some opinions before i get a new replacement that may not even help.

Network connectivity

Hey ppl, had my HD for about 2 weeks now and im loving it, soo much better than my N95 8gb, however I do miss the camera..! Anyway back to subject, today i went down my garage to work on my car (dont worry the phone was put well away from where i was working, have got it in the silicone case and its been very well looked after!!!), the battery was on 1/3 and in the space of 2 hours the phone was dead (not sure when in those 2 hours it died!) so plugged it in, let it charge a little then turned it on, now im having massive problems with the phone not connecting to the network???
I live in a city and as such never ever have problems with coverage, its always at max, however the phone will connect to the network with full signal strength, then within 5-10 seconds the signal strength goes down and down, then i lose connection all together for a few mins then it will reconnect at full strength again????
I've not really installed any apps recently, the only thing i've installed which i can think may have contributed toward something was HDtweak but it was all working fine yesterday...
Reallllly confused and frustrated, hoping its not a hardware issue already
Andy
right ive gone through all the settings, even hard reset the phone, still doing the same so it's got to be the phone itself... whoopdedoo
Did you ever sort this out? it seems I have the same issue, when the phone goes to 'sleep' it disconnects itself from the network, I wake it up and within a minute or two it reconnects back at full strength....meanwhile im missing calls....

[Q] my G2 loses service, restart brings it back

hey everyone
so my G2, which I absolutely love, has been having a problem lately. in the first week it happened maybe once and i didn't think much of it, but since Friday it's happened like 8 times now. I'll be sitting there with my G2 and all the sudden I have no service whatsoever. Just an x on the signal strength indicator. 1 or 2 times it has come back after a minute or two, but the other times I had to turn the phone off and back on. the weird part is I'm not moving at all, totally sitting still, but when it comes back on I have FULL bars with HSPA+. so it's not like I walked into an area that didn't get good reception.
any idea what's going on? i looked around but didn't see other people having this issue. any ideas?
thanks
alright well at least i'm not alone. i remember that rumored OTA update was supposed to have some radio bugfixes. maybe when the real OTA update comes it will have something to fix this. i hope so.
I have been trying to diagnose this issue on my phone too.
By any chance, do either of you have your BT on at the time?
Happens to mine as described and I have never turned on bluetooth. However this would also happen to my G1 so I think its a network thing personally.
Yeah, it definitely is. I have 2 areas that it happens in, both are while I am in my car and I have BT on in my car. When I ran it without BT, did not happen.
I have found that when I am in those area's, turning off 3G stops it entirely, even with BT on, so when in my car, I set edge and still use my BT and problem is gone.
I hope this is temporary and an OTA can fix the handoff from 3G to Edge and back better so that I can stop this, but this works well enough.
Mine has done that also, maybe once a week for the past 3 weeks.
Judging by the other problems you can have Id say this one isnt that bad. Especially if it only happens once a week haha. This is the only problem I have with my phone.
no bluetooth...
no no bluetooth on, i never do actually... but also my G1 never did this, which makes me think it's NOT a network thing, but I don't know.
also I'm sure this is just coincidence but it almost always happens when my girlfriend is nearby with her T-Mobile Blackberry Curve. i know it wouldn't make any sense, but she's sitting there on the same network with full service and all the sudden my G2 loses service completely, right next to her... although it's not always while she's there, but like the majority of the times she's been there.
I just started another post to check on something, I have widgets that show me when I am connected to 3G and when I am connected to H. I have noticed that the phone is activity managing that connection. In other word, it is in 3G until data is transfered then it goes to H. I wonder if when we are in areas of "questionable" HSDPA signal if this hand off is causing the problems.
I have seen a lot of op's say that there problems come right after some data activity?
Just a guess a this point
i saw someone mention in another post that it happens after/during a text message alot of times. i haven't noticed that myself, but that's something to think about too.

What I've heard is that the phone will stay in 3G mode until you begin using data in order to save battery life. Makes sense to me.

WIFI Drops, antenna issue?

i noticed that every few seconds or so the wifi icon would go all black, no bars, and the connection of whatever i was doing such as browsing would be lost.
when i did some searching on xda it seems most people believed that it was to do with their routers but one person said it was the antenna being connected to the case at the top left when in portrait so if your hand was holding it there, that would cause it. i held it elsewhere and no drop out.
if i put my hand back there, it wasnt instantly dropped but after a few seconds it did and when i removed my hand again not instant but the signal came back.
anyone else experiencing this?
i just ordered a case that i wanted anyway, will this maybe help this issue also as my hand wont be directly touching that area?
if I put my hand over the top of the device while in portrait view the signal drops down a bit but I don't lose signal.
I've never actually lost signal while in a covered area. At home at the farthest distance from an AC point, I still have good signal w/65Mbps connection.

cheers.
there is a definate drop from 3-4 bars down to 1-2 bars within 1 second of putting my hand over that location. if at the same time there is maybe something else downloading on my PC or something similar, that causes that last bit of a problem and the signal drops.
You're holding it wrong!
Lol jk I have the same issue too. This tablet has the worst wifi reception of all times... Of all times.
I'm seeing slight issue at 11.g, would probably be accentuated at a further distance from router.. perhaps an external mod, foil under tape?
What does the black dot on WiFi icon indicate?
I experience this exact issue. My router is at the top of the stairs on the 2nd floor. I can sit on the couch downstairs about 20 feet away and this happens all the time. This may be the type of antennas and or software these companies are using in general. My wife has the same issue with the galaxy tab 7.7.
My iPad however reaches through the whole house including from the basement and never drops below the max 4/4 bars on either a 2.4 or 5 Ghz bands.

I remember reading that apple had some top notch experts working on antenna designs during issues with iphone reception. The rhing is I can get great speeds with good reception, so it must be antenna proficiency that is the issue.
I have this issue too
I have this issue too but I'm not certain it has anything to do with the the way I hold the tablet.
It's really annoying, and I don't have a clue about what the cause is. Like thevuman said, worst wifi reception of all time, of all time.
Wifi channel?
you could try changing your wifi channel through the routers settings because interference may be the problem.
the below app can tell you the best channels to use though my router tells me to not use channel 13 and 14 because it might be incompatible.

once downloaded tap view>channel rating.

I used wifi analyzer like you suggested and ended up changing my channel and killing the guest network, and it hasn't dropped again, at least not like it used to. So yeah this looks like a good fix.

[Q] Nexus 4 wifi range / bars issue

I have a nexus 4 16 gb rev 11 running 4.2.2. it seems like I have a weak wifi reception both at my workplace and at home.
1. When I'm at work 5 meters away from the router. the values I get from wifi analyzer keep on changing constantly from
-54dbm to 66dbm and the bars go from 2/4 to 4/4... Speedtest had good results (26Mbps down/29Mbps up).
2. I walked around the office, on the same levels of reception other devices (S3,S2,S,HTC desire,Gnex) showed more wifi bars. confusing...
3. When I put the Nexus 4 right next to the router it gets -24dBm. (speedtest 26 down/31 up)
I have 3 more days to replace my device and I dunno how to make sure it's just a software issue or a hardware issue. I dont understand
how come the bars keep changing on the same dBm levels that also change rapidly in different locations (I can stand at the same spot and get -71 and then -52 and get from 1 bar to 3) .
It could be the way you hold it. The antennas for the N4 is in the back panel. The wifi antenna is located at the bottom rear of the phone. A slight change in holding it (moving a finger) can make a difference. Also, some router antennas are directional, which could explain the slower speed when placed next to the router.
Hope this helps >.<

I tried just now to put it aside on a table and see if the values change and they still do even without me touching it,
I'm in my room right now and it changes from -90dBm and then -75dBm and then after a few seconds -88,-84,-82 and back to -75,
then again it goes back to -90dBm. In this location I get just one bar or no bars at all but the internet still works even with no bars. Why does this happen? =[
help
Help anyone??

Hardware WiFi defect, very weak signal.

1-2 months ago my nexus 7 fell from my hand and it has a small dent in its left top edge. Since then (not sure, noticed it first time 2-3 days after that happened) I have noticed that my N7's WiFi signal has been very weak. The router is 15-20 meters away in some other room and I used to get 2/3 bars in my room and it was basically just great, never had problems with WiFi before. But now I get 1 bar mostly, 2 bars rarely, sometimes I get no bars (WiFi still works, as per usual belief there are not 4 levels cause there are 4 bars, there is also a 5th level of WiFi on android with no bars, fully grey WiFi icon in status bar but WiFi still works but very slow and weak) and sometimes it just disconnects and I have to manually reconnect it in settings or wait some minutes for it to get reconnected.
Something weird I have noticed is that I get normal (like it was in old and normal case, 2-3 bars and no drops and choppyness) WiFi signal sometimes when I have held the tablet in portrait but as soon as I rotate it to right, signal jumps right back to weak (1 bar or no bar or disconnects even) and when I rotate it to left it also jumps to weak (1 bar or 2 bars or no bars) but not as weak as when I rotate to right (upside down is also similarly weak as left side).
Earlier I used to think its software problem cause I believed that if WiFi chip has been damaged then WiFi would have stopped working altogether but now I am pretty sure its hardware damage since I have updated through many night lies of cm10.1/10.2 and I have even tried absolute stock 4.2.2/4.3 and wiping many times. I have also tried many kernels.
My device was bought from US from office max by a relative of mine. I live in India and since the bootloader is also unlocked I doubt warranty will work.
I need help to decide what should I do, it wouldn't have been a problem it signal was just a bit weak but speeds slow down and sometimes WiFi disconnects so it is a problem.
Is there something I can do myself? Should I contact Asus support? The thing with Asus support here in my part of country (my city) is that they take long times to process things.
And also I want to know if someone has any idea how much it (the repair, if any) might cost.

It sounds like you have probably damaged the wifi antenna.
ASUS warranty support doesn't cover customer damage, but non-warranty support ought to be able to repair it. I don't know how much they would charge, but you can ask them.
It's possible someone with more hardware knowledge could tell you how to troubleshoot it yourself, but I don't know how.
