Optimizing a new, stock LG G3 - G3 General

Hey guys, I just upgraded from a crappy old HTC 3D Evo phone, and I never cared much for it due to its buggy software so I never really cared to take care of it or preserve it in any way. I initially picked up a Samsung Galaxy S5, but my friend told me the LG G3 was better and cheaper. Some brief research led me to the same conclusion so I traded in my $650 Samsung S5 for the $600 LG G3. Bigger screen, 50% more memory, 100% more storage - it's a no brainer, isn't it?
Are there any experienced users who would care to share what they'd do to optimize the phone? By optimize, I mean increasing battery life, performance, usability, convenience, and basically anything relating to those categories. I'm considering rooting the phone to get the most out of it. Never rooted a phone before, but I don't find it daunting (especially with all the guides). I just want to get rid of any background bloat, and set up my phone so that it uses the battery minimally unless I'm using it, and I possibly might even want to just run it at 1080P for superior battery life and performance. I've heard of people underclocking the CPU when the screen is turned off and was wondering if that was beneficial or worth doing. I just want my phone to be lean, efficient, and extremely considerate of the battery life. The one thing I actually appreciated about the S5 was the ability to run it in Ultra Power Saver mode which did a great job at running the phone in a lean state when I wasn't actively using it - if I could do anything similar to that, that'd be cool.
Any general tips or personal preferences on how use their phone is appreciated.
(P.S. I posted this here in the General Section instead of Q&A because the Q&A forum seemed to be filled with threads of people having specific problems, while I'm trying to create a thread that could be potentially useful to anyone who just grabbed the phone and wants to know experienced user's opinions on maintaining the optimizing the device)

To tell you the truth I dont think you can get too far without root. So that would be my nmbr 1 advice

Is it okay to root using that 1-touch root program or do you recommend a specific way? I'll be sure to grab Greenify and I just downloaded Nova Launcher. Is Greenify the only battery-related app I should be looking at? I looked around the Play store and many of them seem to be heavy on bloat, useless features, and advertising.
Thank you :highfive:
Is there any apps that manage my network signals intelligently? For example, if I'm at my house, it uses Wi-fi for data and turns off mobile data antennas? Or is that unnecessary or a bad idea? Wi-fi does use less power than 3G, correct?

First, go with Stump Root at the LG G3 Original Android Development section.
Second, greenify is great. Use it wisely. There are other good battery saving apps around there, but you should be careful with the fake ones. I'm currently using Unbounce for wakelock optimizing, but there is also wakelock detector which is great.
Third, about the data... well, I used to have a smart radio feature with a custom rom back on the Nexus 4. But I dont think you will find any app to do that easily. For that, you could try Tasker, which is great but not so simple of configure. But the possibilities are endless.
Welcome and good luck!

Use wakelock detector/betterbatterystats to identify what you need to greenify

I use green power as an effective battery saving app, as well as greenify, xposed unbounce etc

Awesome recommendations, digging Greenify a lot, and Stump was ridiculously easy to use. I saw someone recommend Deep Sleep Battery Saver in another thread and I've been liking that as well. Next step is I plan to use 1080P tweak in this thread, this CPU thermal throttling mod, and these speed-boost tweaks.
With all of these changes, my G5 should be very speedy compared to stock as well as much more considerate of battery life. When/if LG fixes the sharpening, I might switch back to 1440p.

Screen Wobble/Battery Consumption (Xperia Play User Comparison)

Hi Yall
Ive had the xperia play for around 2 weeks now and loving it but seeing as im pretty particular about my new gadgets im just wondering if my xperia play is the same as everyone elses.
Ive basically got only a couple queries which are:
1. How is your screen wobble when the slider is opened and closed?
With mine, when the slider is closed there is a slight gap between the gamepad and the screen so when you use the touch screen (for smsing etc) you can here the tapping of the screen on the gamepad.
When the slider is open on the other hand the same thing happens but only on the bottom 2 corners of the screen you can push them slightly down onto the gamepad with slight movement.
2. How is your battery usage/life?
With mine, I basically get 1 or 1.5 days battery life depending on what I am doing but I cant help notice that even with little things such as sending a quick sms or simply going through the phones settings will actually eat 1% or 2% of the battery life. This normal?
Lastly, im new to android as I have recently switched from the iphone so when im looking at the stock android app killer thats built into the device under the applications section. What is actually using the battery? As you go the the running apps part its got used and free application that show up. are both of these eating the battery or is it just the used ones?
Thank You in advance and thanks for comparing.
this has been discussed over and over again, please use search first before posting.
Anyway, Markus (developer I think) from Sony Ericsson confirmed the "LITTLE" wobble and small gap when closed is normal. That is in accordance to their design engineers' wants to allow users to have a good feel when using the gaming device. As with any side-slider phones, THIS IS NORMAL.
Regarding the battery, that is just fine. You are actually getting the juice out of it. Period. I had mine rooted and bloatware removed, but the difference in battery consumption against non-rooted didn't vary a lot. So I reverted back to NO BLOATWARE REMOVED (but still rooted though) to preserve my ability to update via OTA in the future and it's working just fine. I believe the phone is managing itself very well so there's no need for us to be doing a lot of tweaks that could be potentially dangerous. And oh, I believe you're already on 2.3.3 because on 2.3.2 the battery won't even last a day. Mine lasts a maximum of 35 hours on 2.3.3 with moderate use, 4-5 hours on straight gaming.
EDIT: Never use third-party App Killers/Task Managers! I read somewhere legit that they will just screw up your phone. Android phones are way better off with spiking memory usages because that's the time when the phone starts to manage itself actually. Remember, devs and engineers will never release a device that cannot manage itself. Love your device! Love it even more if it's in stock condition!
If you want speed, memory and more battery then do this
Batteryurchase juice defender ultimate, it's absolutely wonderful and ACTUALLY works. With root it saved me x1.50 on battery, without root it saved me x2. 0
Install memory booster, qwik boost and task killer will free up RAM and stop battery consumption for a few minutes.
Speed: unlocking bootloader and then rooting, installing titanium backup and removing bloatware, uninstalling useless apps and freezing will make it noticibly fast. You can also use. SETCPU for extended battery and faster performance. And SD speed increase
For more speed and precision , flash doomkernel
That will catapult your battery to 10 hours, and will get you to another day.

It is normal for the Play to have a slight wobble!
If you really want to inprove it you can use two of those little sticky pad things from the bottom of a mouse (no, not a real mouse, a pc mouse!), place them on the back of the Play while the screen is up, it stops it wobbling, there is a thread about it somewhere on here.
like i said in my post, that is normal. why fix something that is normal?
I just dont like the slight wobble, thats all
Its one of those things that eat at your very soul over time lol
then there's nothing we can do about that. no one's bothered about that here anyway.
So is anyone also experiencing one shoulder button being looser than the other?

Either way anything that kills apps is bad. I used to do it religiously on my old Droid, and then I read that article and said hey lets just give it a shot. Well it took a while (like a couple days) for the phone to catch up but it actually started to run BETTER and less stuff was crashing and force closing.
I still have Advanced task killer on my phone, but I use it for one thing only, to kill apps that screw up but don't Force Close (generally Facebook because that app is a piece of ****e....)
there's an article (legit one) i read somewhere saying app killers and advanced task managers plus battery calibration apps are actually dangerous to android phones. after all, android does memory spooling, so it manages its RAM on its own and we don't want to mess with that. as i always say, why intervene with something that's working properly? engineers made their phones act properly without / minimal management, so why bother?

There is quite a good aricle on lifehacker that says all about the native memory management and why task killers are useless
Yes tasks managers are quite useless for Android. In fact, it is known to screw up some programs or functions because of closing the wrong programs. That being said i'm using the one that came with go launcher.

You can stick a teflon mouse skate at the back of the screen just behind the home button. It won't completely eliminate wobble but it makes it a lot more stable when pressing any of the face buttons or texting.
When a task killer kills apps, most of them just restart. If you want it to be truly effective, you need to have root, titanium pro, and freeze them.
Plus, task killers use extra CPU and ram, resulting in more power being used. They just keep killing apps repeatedly and eat your battery.

[Guide] How to get the most out of your brand spanking new G3!

Just thought I’d put a short guide together on what I think are some things to do to get the most out of your spanking new LG G3 when you get it or you already have it. Most of you guys might already know most of this or might not. Just thought it might help some people. This ain’t rocket science but every little bit helps!
Battery:
This is the hardest thing to do because like a fingerprint everyone has a different set up with apps and how they use their phone (wifi vs 3g vs 4g etc) that screen on time will always vary. Also you don’t want to turn everything off and cripple your brand new smartphone just for your battery. There’s a balance.
However here are some general things to do that do help:
1. Install Greenify from the Playstore. I have found this is the number one way to stop drainage. This app will hibernate apps when not in use. It doesn’t stop their functionality at all but hibernates them.
2. Don’t use Google Now. I think it’s a gimmick and does bugger all for me however if you use it it will drain your battery big time. Of course if you love it then use it!
3. Don’t use location services. Another big drainer. Just use it when you need it. However if you have apps that need it then of course leave it on!
4. Use ‘auto’ on screen brightness. Mine is on ‘auto’ but at 100% and the brightness is perfectly ok for me.
5. If you continue to get big drainage then download Betterbatterystats from the Playstore and look at the ‘wakelocks’ – this way you will be able to see what’s draining your battery. As a general rule your phone should go into deep sleep for at least 80% of the time.
With this phone I am getting around 5 to 5.5 hours Screen on Time. You should be getting around that too.
Performance:
Here are a few things only that really do help with speed and performance:
1. The whole thermal throttling thing is a pain i.e. LG’s decision to turn down brightness when it gets hot. However there is something you can do and which I have now done for two weeks with no adverse problems. Turn it off! Put this in the phone app: 3845#*400# and then scroll down to 'high temperature property' and switch to enable and do the same for 'thermal daemon mitigation'. Please note my model is ‘400’ so this will work in the number sequence above. For models with other numbers I am pretty sure you just substitute and put that number in e.g. 855.
2. Go to Dev Options and change the transition animation scale, the animator duration scale and the window animation scale to 0.5. This little thing speeds up your phone like nothing else.
3. Root your phone with towelroot. One click root! And then start debloating. Get rid of whatever you want by downloading Titanium Backup and going into each app and freezing whatever you want. Freezing is safer than uninstalling but does the same thing. Debloating is a must!
4. So once rooted then start using xPosed modules by downloading and installing the xPosed framework and then rebooting.
These are my personal Top 3:
a. Download the brilliant xPosed module ‘TweaksBox’ by P_Toti located at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792242
And donate something to him! This allows you to change so much with this phone. I dunno where to start. It is superb.
b. I dislike the LG skin so immediately download the Google launcher – to me it is the fastest launcher out there beating Nova and Apex. This launcher cannot be customised however there is a fantastic xPosed module that allows you to customise everything - Xposed Gel settings located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-xposed-gel-settings-t2647275
And donate to him too!
c. How good would it be to extend your nav bar seamlessly if you slide your finger! Well you can – download Xtended nav bar here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-xtended-navbar-t2787228
And donate to him too!
I can’t think of anything else but these things definitely help.
And get ready for your G3 – it is super duper great!
lol donate this donate that, you sounded like their marketing... nice tips though, I'd like to ask between betterbattery stats and gsam battery monitor, which one better?
will towelroot work on the d855 version?
also what is the difference between greenify's hibernating with titanium backup's freezing?

Ha yes someone's got to donate! They do so much and get so little.
Yes the only reason I said bbs is because I'm used to it. Gsam does the same thing essentially.
Yes from what I read towelroot should work.
Greenify hibernates an app in the background if you are not using it whilst freezing apps effectively uninstalls them without the pain of then being actually uninstalled. And you can unfreeze them any time.
okay, again thanks for creating this thread, btw how do we take screenshots from g3?

Yes I've debloated some but just the safe ones. There's heaps there though.
How are you finding yours? I'm loving mine but just hoping more developers get on board. Tell your developer mates please!
Is there any danger turning off the thermal thingy. Could the phone completely overheat?
I'll just confirm for anyone wondering that indeed the turning off the thermal throttling does work by changing the device model number to "855" on the UK version
No adverse effects in last half hour or so and have been trying to run demanding tasks to see how it go's
You can uninstall all of the bloat without any issues. It also helps with your battery life. I usual get 4 hours of screen time post charge. That's more than most people can get on a stock kernel, and it's great for a 2k display.

No torch/flashlight app preinstalled, you will have to install one. Also no task manager that I can see.
What is the best torch app you recommend?
Also task manager? Doesn't the android multitasking app work finely for that?
I am using"flashlight hd led" which seems fine.
Yes android does, I just liked the task manager on the G2, not sure why they didn't keep it.

Improve overall performance (How to)

I don't know if it's well known, but I found the overall speed/performance to be a little slow. I'm talking about opening apps, and loading them, before they can be used. A simple thing I did was turn off all Moto stuff (Assist, Actions, Display). Not that the phone was bad as it's a very smooth overall device, but after turning off Moto, it really made a difference. All apps open and load much faster, and the UI seems snappier too. I know this may not be good for those who use Moto, but for me the trade off of turning it off is better than the little times I used it. Just thought I'd share in case there are people who are looking to gain a bit of speed.
Another tip is to enable developer options, and change the animations from 1x to .5x. Huge difference in opening apps, and general overall use.

There's not really any bloat. Since the phone is not carrier locked you only get three apps not from Google. Alert, Migrate, and Moto. I guess if you really wanted you can disable the Google apps you don't use, but they are just the standard apps you would use anyway (at least I do) like Maps, Gmail, Hangouts, etc.

Ah sorry, I meant more than just preinstalled apps. I meant background apps and services as well.
I use DroidWall to deny network access to everything except the stuff I need (gmail/web browser/weather widget), and looking at firewall logs I see a ton of moto and google-related services trying to connect to the network even if I don't use them. (DW groups them all into a few "app" entries, so I haven't had time to go through and find the exact culprits). Some of the google ones can be easily disabled (hangouts, drive, etc), but there's more than just those three moto apps that are trying to get network access.
For example, there seems to be some sort of service (Moto Checkin maybe?) that displays a ! warning symbol in the wifi signal meter if that service is not able to connect to some server, even if network access is working in other applications. Disabling that service would help cut down on RAM/CPU usage (even if it's only minute) and network usage (it seems to do this check every 15min or so).
EDIT:
Found what is causing the exclamation mark. It's an android system process that pings google servers to determine if the phone has a connection to the internet and not just the router. I was thinking it had to do with some Moto service because Droidwall grouped "Android System" in the same app category as a bunch of useless Moto services.
This thread details a bit more about it and how to disable it (I went with method 2A): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58252752&postcount=38
Not having a service trying to ping google every few minutes should help improve battery life and a minute amount of RAM/CPU usage.

/ according to me all the motorola phones come without bloatware and by removing mentioned apps i dont think there must be significant improvements. But definitely changing animations will definitely improve your performance but not the moto apps
Is the device still have memory leak bug. My device is lagging like hell after half an hour use.
The antutu benchmark is also 16163 which is very less i think. My Android One topped upto 22000.
I wrote a post similar to this as well, is there a way we can consolidate it to just this one?

What's the best way to do this? Go into Apps and disable, or is there a better way to "turn it off"?
Disabling apps basically stops them from ever being active, period: once disabled they don't run anymore, don't have any services run anymore, and they disappear aka become invisible in the apps tray. The only thing they still do is "hang around" meaning they take up space on the device but that's a given. With a proper root and Titanium Backup (the full purchased version) you can completely uninstall said apps but there's always a chance you'll remove something that's integral to something else, especially when you're dealing with either the Google framework stuff or on Motorola devices the Moto system underpinnings.
Best course of action: go into Settings - Apps - and Force close the app, delete all the cached data if there is any and then disable the app(s) as required on the device itself and then go from there. If there's absolutely no issues ever with the functionality of the device then sure, you can do the root/Titanium Backup/uninstall route if necessary but you're not really going to save a ton of space overall.
Most times, disabling an app is more than enough to get it out of the way and stop bothering you for whatever reason(s).

Well you have tweaked stuff since day one. I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. I'm running stock, and the only change system wise I did was change Dev options for animations. I have no complaints as I switch back and forth from this, and my Note 3, and I only notice some slowness opening apps, but no lag, stutter, or anything I would consider bad performance. Maybe try flashing stock image, factory reset, and see how it is then.

I have to say I agree here, I am also running Stock. I have not seen any serious lag on ths phone except slightly slower loading. And I know what lag feels like as I am the not so proud owner of a TF700 tablet....
All I have done is mod the animations likewise and disabled as much as I can that I don't use.
I run stock and only modified the animation speed and must say the phone lags much more than I anticipated.
Must be Lollipop because my parents both have the Moto G 4g (kitkat) and everytime I need to help them it feels much more fluid than my Moto e.
From loading apps and the play store to even swiftkey that seems to load so much quicker, very weird.
Just tested it yesterday because I thought I was making things up and put my dads phone and mine next to each other and the speed difference when loading apps was making me sad.
I just picked this phone up yesterday to hold me over until the next moto X, or maybe the next nexus.
came from a nexus 5 (only had it a month and well i couldn't live with its awful battery life, it was so bad maybe only 6 hours per charge and the battery was fairly new). now this phone is noticeably slower, but its really not so bad. I do think though that something in this software build for 5.0.2 is slowing it down. when i am using the phone it seems like theres plenty of free ram, but it just feels a little stuttery scrolling through things like a facebook feed. I had a moto x 2013, and a razr M before that, and am a big motorola fan, but I just cant see how this is so slow. it seems like it'd have to be faster than a razr M (which is same resolution, and 1GB ram) but it seems to me that something is really wrong here.
hopefully 5.1 comes out soon.

Tell me about G5's bloat please read

I'm just about to buy a new flagship,of course my options are the G5 S7 and HTC10, each has its specific advantages, I like G5 features as modularity dual cameras IR blaster, I'm not concerned on metal glass finish since I put my phone always in some dumb-proof case coz I use to drop or put it where shouldn't be, that criteria its why looks like g5 s7 an htc10 are almost in a tie, few differentiator are htc10 front camera with ois and integrated dac cleanable Android, s7 wireless charging and small size, Knox .
I don't care on dac, slightly better camera or wireless charging are things I can live without .
But repairability , its something I really appreciate since I'm not strange on requiring to switch screens batteries or plugs even full body exchange, here the G5 shines also the IR blaster its useful for me coz I use to miss the remotes .
So I almost decided to go on an G5. But.....
Something I don't consider trivial its bloatware, while companies as ASUS allow full uninstall of 3rd party apps and most Asus apps while keeps few forks on stock Android apps , htc10 also seems its much better providing if one want so the closest to stick nexus-like experience , that's really great .
But this usually can be achieved on other phones thru little tricks, I want to know how much bloat left on the LG G5 after basic uninstall/cleanup , and what you can do on the rest (uninstall via root tools , frozen ir just replace with apps like Nova Launcher ).
What the state of the bloat nation on the G5?
Thanks in advance.
I just got myself a G5. I was worried about bloatware too but now looking at it, its really not that bad. There are about 3 useless apps (that I used Nova launcher to hide) but some of the apps are actually really cool. For example you can't uninstall a certain app called the quickremote, but upon further inspection it was LG's app for utilizing the IR sensor. It has so many codes at your disposal. Super useful. I'm not really the type who takes pictures on my phone either but the great cameras have actually tempted me to quite a few times now. The modules I haven't really got into and the battery life is actually pretty good. I recommend this phone.
I was pretty much exclusively a Nexus user (N1, N4, N5, N6) and the only reason I didn't get the 6P was because they weren't selling it through T-Mobile so I couldn't directly upgrade to it... so I feel your anxiety regarding the bloatware on other phones. It's a primary reason I don't see myself ever buying a Samsung phone!
That said, the situation on the G5 isn't that bad. The vast majority of the pre-installed stuff is actually able to just be deleted! There's a few that can't (like the Amazon app), but they don't intrude in the way things like the Lookout (I think it's called) app does. But even then, you CAN uninstall that one.
If you're worried about the bloat, you shouldn't. My issues more lie in the ways they tweaked the way Android behaves- like, when I swipe down on the notification bar, it drops all the way down to the quick settings, and you have to push it BACK UP to get to the rest of your notifications. Also: if you're on WiFi Calling, there's an omnipresent notification that can't be swiped away. Or, the Smart Home settings- I'd like for, when I'm not at home, for it to turn the WiFi off. It does this, but it sends a notification letting you know that it did. That's something that should just be invisible, but instead the thing wants to brag about it.
Anyway, I hope this was helpful. I'm really digging this phone despite it's quirks, and the bloat was only annoying in the first 10-15 minutes after starting the phone for the first time. Once I weeded it out, it's like it was never there.

My AT&T LG G5 is full of bloatware. It will not let me remove it either. At least I haven't found a way to remove it. My LG G2 which I had root, was great once I cleaned up all the bloat. But this G5 has been very disappointing because of the impact of all the bloat. There is easily 6 or more programs wasting battery and cpu, but I can't get rid of them and AT&T continues to update them., making them even bigger hogs. Doesn't look like they will ever root it (H-820) either. Could be a very nice phone but the bloat ruined it for me.

Disable for time being. It is annoying that these companies do this. Honestly most bloat apps they put in these phones are worthless.

why would I want to root this phone? and I am no noob!

Honestly guys
Give me one good reason for wanting to do this hey I cannot think of one
I have owned a lot of phones previously first of all
The souled best I have owned a Samsung Galaxy S2
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the only reason I had to do root those phojes
Not enough ram for multitasking purposes
Had to root so that more apps can stay in memory.
With an is as light as this....
Dont really have a need to debloat
Dont use titanium backup much
Only one reason i can think of adblocking
Thinking about it now
The reason why we had to root phones was to squeeze more performance out of them..
And my general experience is rooting though helps
It doesn't lead to an idea phone state where everything works.
Some small bugs around the edges are left which can be as annoying as you want then to be...
So anyone here who can give me better reasons for wanting to root this device
No reason IMO. I think people do it for different ROMs, Adblocker, Titanium Backup.
You don't need root if you have to ask why.
I never rooted for extra performance, I root for total control over the device I just spend a lot of money on. And I like to theme stuff deep into the system.

Nandroid backup and titanium backup for the apps.
Privacy issues: firewalls Afwall, xprivacy, etc.
Customization: Gravitybox, etc.
Ad control: minminguard, and others.
I could go on.
Otherwise, why not just get an iPhone?
But, if you are happy, no need to root.

Seconded, I rooted to have TB and Ad block. Maybe in the future I'll mess around with a custom ROM but for now stock gives me everything I need.

There are hundreds, maybe thousands of reasons to root a device. I have quite a few apps which I like, plus customizable options which only exist on custom ROMs.
However all that is meaningless, the only question you need to ask is why would you root? What Is it you need which you can't have unrooted?
Sent from my ONEPLUS A5000 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I use it for
Adaway
BetterBatteryStats
CF.lumen as I find it works way better than the built in night mode
Kernel Manager
Force Doze
Greenify
Pairs to backup and restore WiFi and Bluetooth settings
Tasker
And most significantly, TitaniumBackup!
There are plenty of reasons.
Custom kernels can bring awesome features, even better stability and amazing battery life.
Custom roms bring you all the customization you ever wanted
Custom apps like Viper4A bring awesome sound to your ears, titanium backup backups everything you ever want, Greenify gives you better battery life than you can imagine.
Truth is, you decide why you want to root.
I will admit though, I didn't think I was going to need to root the OP5, it is really good stock, but I'm glad I did root. I am able to pull >48 hours on one battery with >9 hours SOT thanks to some root apps and features.
Battery life is excellent for me as of now. M.
Maybe I will root it... But after sometime
The only reason need titanium backup is if I switch roms.. And without root I won't switch roms so no need for titanium backup...
Need to block ads though...
Maybe I'll just let a rooted stock do wonders for me...
I have seen once I change stock...switching from one rom to another becomes a temptation and then the phone rarely remains a phone.... I start feeling like a developer and keep on flashing roms...
Not on this device... I don't want to set up this device again and again with every new rom... Lets see.. Till how long can I resist!

Depends on the user. Im not rooted but would do it to:
Use Viper4Android
Try out custom ROMs
Use mods like enableing front speaker playback for stereo sound
etc...
There are reasons, the question is do you need it.
I haven't rooted yet but I am going to.
- adblocker
- Titanium backup
- Viper4Android
- custom ROMs for customization
I had a Samsung device till recently and was using custom ROMs cause I hated how TouchWiz looks.
Now, stock OP5 might look similar to what I had but I still feel crippled.
I have to say though that the advantages of root don't make it a must have. I am using it stock cause I'm on holiday right now and could use it like this. It's definitely better than stock Samsung
I've never rooted for performance. I always root for extra customization options.
The root apps and options I'm using now are:
Substratum/ozone for middle clock and am/pm and a few other small ui tweaks.
Button backlight controller so the backlight on the buttons stay on while the screen is on. I mean by default, the LEDs are useless because they come on only after you press them. The point of the LED is to help you find them. So wtf.
Adblock, because a lot of sites can't even be viewed on mobile that have full screen ads or ads that cover content.
Stereo Speaker mod is pretty sweet. That's the main thing I miss from my Nexus 6p.
And I will definitely be switching to a rom as soon as they are stable enough. Things that OOS did right, they only kinda did right. Sure, they have a circle battery, great job. But you can't put the percent inside of it? No hold back button to kill a misbehaving app? Really?
I have to root. Don't know why, but i have to.
Actually I do it for adblocking, viper, and custom ROMs. So far, with the crazy battery life I am getting.... I am sticking with rooted, stock ROM and kernel.
And for those who don't root and still want adblocking: try fdroid with DNS66
Edit
As been said before: my main reason for rooting is backup (TiBu) ! Its actually the only reason left that I could not replace by other means.
Other reasons are: ad blocking (but there are rootless solutions that do ok), customization (but could live without if need be) and debloating (also with TiBu plus MyAndroidTools) for improved battery life.

For me, the main reason is Titanium. Just because you don't care, doesn't mean that no one does. Root can do a lot. I use greenify, have that battery monitor app, etc. All use root.
I've rooted every android device I've ever owned prior to the OP5 first and foremost because I'm a bit of a tech nerd so naturally I like tinkering with electronics. I was able to add a bunch of useful features and enhancements through exploring root. But with the OP5, only thing I see that I would need root for is a proper ad blocking solution.
Bottom line is that most devices now a days work fine for daily use out of the box but everyone has individual reasons why they root. Same justification as to why some of us modify our cars. They drive fine in stock trim, but some of us want to make it our own.

Totally agreeing with you. There isn't much of a need to root the phone, but I still root mine for the hell of it. Haven't done anything yet that requires root though. Still, it's nice having the option there.

Actually a really good point, I too often end up rooting, checking out some roms, want more customisation and all of a sudden I've flashed my device 17 times over and spent more time setting the same stuff up over and over. It's that elusive "I just need this one more tweak sh*t to make my phone perfect"....when there's no such thing as a perfect device
