Nexus 6 vs The Competition - Nexus 6 General

Great article on AA showing the differences between the Nexus 6 and other devices in the phablet category.
To sum it up:
- The Nexus 6 has a great display to body ratio. It's only (slightly) beat by the LG G3 and Huawei Ascend Mate 7.
- The Nexus 6, as you probably know by now, has the top-of-the-line specs. Nothing really compares with it except the Note 4, which has similar specs.
- The Nexus 6 is slightly bigger than the Note 4 (Differences in mm: 5.8 x 4.4 x 1.5) but manages to fit in a display that is .26 inches larger and front facing stereo speakers.
I would probably say that the Nexus 6's biggest competitor is the OnePlus One. It offers high-end specs, not quite as high-end as the Note 4 but the differences are negligible. Granted, the Nexus 6 has a more premium build (in my opinion), OIS and is launching with Android L as opposed to waiting more than three months until the OnePlus One receives the L update. Furthermore, the Nexus 6 is going to be on more carriers, will probably have much better customer service, is easily available (once it's actually released) and hopefully won't be riddled with the bugs.
However, the Nexus 6 is twice as much as the OPO - $350 as opposed to $700 for the same amount of storage. Money talks...
Now the real question: The other flagships that are being compared to the Nexus 6 all offer something additional. For example, the Note 4 has an SPen and the Mate 7 also has a fingerprint sensor. The LG G3 and Note 4 both have removable battery, microsd support and multi-window modes. Are you willing to compromise these extra features to have stock android?
Source: AndroidAuthority

No fingerprint scanner is a bummer. I use corporate email on my Nexus 5 and the compliance software makes me have a lockscreen password which is a PITA. No patterns are allowed. iPhone 6 and 5S users can use the fingerprint scanner to bypass the password.

I'm considering the N6 as an upgrade from my much beloved N5, but there's two things that I need to see from the N6 before making the purchase.
#1- The amoled display. Recent offerings from Motorola have had 'middle of the road' amoled screens when compared to Samsung's recent amoled displays (Comparing the Moto X 2014 to a SGS5 or Note 4). If that big amoled is sub-par, I will pass.
#2- The camera. Again, this is the track record of the Nexus line having a less than favorable camera when compared to competing phones. I'm also not sold on the dual ring led flash right around the sensor (it creates red eye if you are shooting people - seen on the Moto X 2014)
What's weird is that when compared to the Note 4 $100 more out of pocket ($649 for 32gb N6 and $749 for 32gb Note 4 - basing pricing from T-Mobile) really does get you quite a bit more.
(Perhaps) better display (more color accurate/brighter)
Better camera (16mp vs 13mp) and better ff (2.0mp vs 3.7mp) camera - I know, it's not all about the mp, but the Note 4's camera has received a lot of praise for shooting in all lighting conditions
S Pen
MicroSD/removable battery (extends device life)
IR blaster
Fingerprint scanner
The decision isn't as easy as it was with getting the N5. It's not the size, it's the price. I just can't stand Samsung and Touchwiz, and with the N6 getting Wifi Calling for T-Mobile... Ugh. If the display and or the camera turn out to be disappointing perhaps I will sit this round and wait for the first 64 bit nexus phone next year.

Poor Graphics on Nexus 6?
Hi, I recently read a troubling article from appleinsider that claims that Nexus 6 graphics performance is sub-par (and Note 4) compared to Apple iPhone 6 Plus.
Because of the source, I am taking this with a pinch of salt. I want to get a new device as my HTC Sensation XE is more than two years old, but, graphics (OpenGL 3) are an important point for me and I will probably get Nexus 9 + OPO/Xiaomi (which may have better graphics, due to smaller screen) if this is indeed the case. By graphics, I mean gaming, like, Modern Combat 5.
Can anyone elaborate on this?

All appleinsider did there was read a benchmark result
Turns out from the note 4 reviews that it handles games beautifully

Can you please add any benchmarks (FPS preferably) that corroborate this (I mean 30 fps is beautiful, but 50+ fps is what I would expect from a flagship)?

Well for example gfx benchmark (onscreen) manhatten , pre release benchmark
Nexus 6 :11.6 fps (2560x1440)
Note 4 :11.1 (2560x1440)
Iphone 6+: 18.4 fps (1920 x 1080)
Obviously these benchmarks are much more stressful than actual games... As I said from 3-4 note reviews I've seen they mention the gaming performance to be excellent with every game they threw at it

Thanks! I will wait for a more thorough review when Nexus 6 comes out. I will probably get a Nexus 9 now as I don't have any tablet, and the 192 core kepler is built for graphics!

Note the difference in display resolution. If you've ever done PC benchmarking, you'll know that plays a huge difference....

Without a doubt, that's why I thought I'd better list them, good thing a lot of Android games give us a resolution slider

No Android phone can top the iPhone when it comes to gaming. That's the primary reason why I always have an iPhone as well as Android. Playing the same game on my iPhone 6 and my Nexus 5, they always look and run better on the iPhone. Take a benchmark game like MC5- on Android a lot of the effects are turned off and it still runs better on the iPhone. Even the 5s had better gaming/graphics performance than the N5. I'd imagine it'll be the same thing with the N6.

Apple's A7 SOC (iphone 5S) dominated most every benchmark. The A8 (so we are calling. We don't know the actual name) which is in iPhone 6 & 6+ is just the next generation of the same chip. It does very well and again dominates the benchmarks.
That doesn't mean a snapdragon 805 isn't good. It just means (in benchmarks at least) the A8 is better. However, we all know synthetics don't necessarily relate to real world use.
Apple is designing custom ARM chips for their own software in a closed system. Advantage Apple.

http://anandtech.com/show/8554/the-iphone-6-review
If you aren't reading anandtech reviews, you need to.

Also note that the N6 camera sensor is NOT THE SAME as Moto X 2014 camera.
N6 camera sensor is IMX 214, source: http://www.motorola.com/us/Nexus-6/nexus-6-motorola-us.html
This is the same camera sensor as One Plus One, source: https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/...mx214-6-lenses-and-low-light-performance.456/
Moto X 2014 camera sensor is IMX 135, source: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Moto...MX135-sensor-and-more-daytime-samples_id60299
However, the Note 4 is using newer camera sensor IMX 240, source: http://www.sammobile.com/2014/08/21...es-16mp-side-touch-wide-selfie-and-much-more/
So, the Nexus 6 camera should perform better than the Moto X 2014, while it might not be as good as Note 4, from sensor model perspective.
Then the deciding factor would be the camera "software"

Thanks. It seems N9 is the way to go for media consumption, considering it's GPU performance is the best available (afa i know). Besides, N6 price seems overkill to me. They could have stuck with 1080p. At 6 inches, I doubt anyone has the eyes to see the difference.

1080P 6in a foot away from your face, you may be able to tell. But I'd agree that the resolution is over kill. A silly decision. It's just a waste of performance and battery life to run quadHD.
I have committed to nexus for obvious reasons. There are things I get with the Nexus line I can't get anywhere else. I don't want a 6" phone. But it's the current nexus.
I'll wait for reviews to hit (mainly anandtech) and see if there are any glaring issues.
I love my nexus 5 so much I could use it for another year or until Ara hits. Only complaint is battery size.

You can't compare GPU benchmarks done at much different resolutions. It has a huge difference on FPS.
To quote one of your links:
Once again, the Galaxy Note 4's GPU performance line up quite closely with what we expect from the Adreno 420. However, due to the higher 1440p resolution the performance improvements from the Adreno 420 are relatively small or none at all unless the application renders at 1080p.

You can't say their SoC dominates the 805 unless you do an apples to apples comparison using the same resolution. If you want to say the iPhone 6 performs better, than X you can. But you should note differences in resolution.

I had the OnePlus One and the Moto X 2014, which is what the Nexus 6 design is based on.
The primary reason why I sold both of my OnePlus are:
-Design
-Signal/call quality.
The phone wasn't comfortable to use due to it's design. The signal quality simply wasn't as good. It take a while for me to drive to work and I tend to stream YouTube podcasts over LTE while driving, I didn't get very good LTE signal with the OPO so I had to use 3G most of the time, even then it wasn't as smooth experience as the Moto X 2013 and 2014.
The OnePlus is a great device for the money no doubt, but Motorola design is my favorite at this point, it's wasn't that much smaller than the OPO but it's so much more comfortable to hold and use. The OnePlus have this somewhat "sharp" edges and it wasn't comfortable in the pocket.
The Nexus 6 uses the same Sony sensor as the OPO, while some people didn't think highly of it, I personally got amazing results from it, especially if you know how to tune your shutter speed and ISO level. I love the 4K DCI recording on it too, which unfortunately will not be available on the Nexus 6.
Also you have to deal with yellow screen issue which I got, I had to put the phone under UV light to fix it, but it didn't completely remove it. And if you have issues and need to do an RMA, I heard the experience wasn't very good. Motorola have some complains too, but not the at the same level as OPO.
I like what OnePlus have to offer so I'll look forward to their next phone. But honestly, I already know that most likely it will also be based off whatever the next Oppo flagship phone is, except with corner cuts, and it's probably going to be very big with capacitive buttons, which is not for me. The Nexus 6 is too big for me too, but I'm mainly interested in it to use as a tablet and back up phone, not as my daily driver.

The N4 and N6 are running over 50% of the iPhone at a huge increase in pixels pushed......
They need to show apples and apples. If they all ran at 1080 the N4 and N6 would run circles around the iPhone 6

Actually maybe half of those GPU benchmarks are "off screen". Which should remove any resolution handicap.
However, you are right. I discussed the SOC's themselves and then switched to device performance.
But the A8 is a serious chip. It competes with and possibly beats the 805 outright even when resolution is taken out of the equation.

No mention of Droid Turbo/Moto X Play?
This is looking like it will be the spec king of 2014.
Same specs as N6, but smaller screen (5.2), bigger battery (3900mah), and better camera (21mp)

Anythnig good about new Lumias apart from the cam...

Been struggling with this question since it was out...The specs are mediocre and standard. Nothing "flagshippy" about them. The cam is both a deal-maker and deal-breaker for some.
But wondering if there is anything I am not seein there...
You don't need better specs for WP8 it will run perfectly smooth on the Lumia 920! The screen is amazing. Why should the camera be a dealbreaker? The design is very nice! You got exclusiv Lumia Apps so there's a lot more special about the 920 than only the camera.
I don't understand what you said not flagshippy? Based on what specs is your assumption.. The screen is awesome, the S4 chip is one of the best, wireless charging, good camera, free nav and so on...

I'm an Android guy, but all these posts about the Lumia 920 being a disappointment confuse the heck out of me.
I just looked up a list of all Windows Phone devices, and here's what I gather about the 920 (compared to previous WP devices):
1 GB RAM, so far WP devices have had only 512 MB RAM tops
S4 SoC, a HUGE improvement over WP SoCs because after running through the entire list of WP devices the most advanced SoC so far has been the S2 Scorpion. I cannot even begin to explain how much of a gigantic leap the S4 is over the S2.
32 GB storage. Only ONE previous WP device has had 32 GB of storage.
EVERYTHING about the display. First 4.5" display on a WP device (not to say that it is the largest, as there have been 4.7" displays, but there has never been a 4.5" display on a WP device). 1280 x 768 resolution, a HUGE leap over the 480 x 800 resolution we have seen so far on WP devices. IPS display, so far the most advanced LCD display on a WP device has been SLCD. The display is just like the SoC: an absolutely gigantic leap over what we've seen so far in WP devices.
LTE support. So far it looks like only 3 WP devices have had LTE.
2000mAh battery. Previous record was 1830mAh.
Camera: let's get down to what's important and talk about something other than MP. Yes, it's 8.7 MP is nothing new, as the Titan II had a 16 MP rear camera. But anyone who knows anything about cameras knows it's about much more than just MP count. So: F/2.0 aperture, the lowest of any smartphone (to my knowledge the only other phone with such an f-stop is the One X), a 1/3 inch sensor (which is larger than the 1/3.2 inch sensor the iPhone 4S, One X, and GS3 all have, so effectively the largest sensor other than outliers like the 808 Pureview), backside illumination, and floating lens mechanical stabilization. BSI isn't new, but few WP phones have had it, and mechanical stabilization isn't new, but based on the video of it in action on a 920 (the actual footage Nokia released, not the ad), no company has ever developed such effective mechanical stabilization. Lastly, very high megapixel counts can actually decrease image quality for small sensor sizes, so it doesn't make much sense to stuff a 16+MP camera into smartphones when they have very small sensor sizes. Higher MP counts are important only when the sensor size correspondingly increases, and the increase from 8-8.7 MP seems like a good increase for a sensor size increase from 1/3.2 inches to 1/3 inches.
I'm not going to avoid the truth: the Lumia 920 represents a huge leap in WP hardware. I see almost nothing to complain about other than the lack of expandable storage. Previous WP phones ran damn smoothly with POS single-core S2 SoCs on earlier versions of WP, and now the Lumia 920 packs a dual-core S4 SoC running WP8. Goodness, if a GS3 runs smoothly with the S4 on ICS, how much of a performance beast will the 920 be given it has the S4 and runs the much faster WP8? The display is in every way a huge improvement over what WP devices have had. HUGE. Nokia claims it's the brightest smartphone display, to go along with all the other details about it that impress me. The camera should be downright impressive. Look up actual pictures the 920 has been demonstrated to take and it is very impressive, especially in low light.
My question: if the Lumia 920 is a disappointment to you, what exact changes would make it meet your hopes? An even larger battery? An even denser display? Quad-core processor? We all know the lack of removable storage is a bummer, but what other things were you hoping for that have let you down?

Unlike android, windows phone does not require as much resources, because windows phone is optimized to run on standardized hardware (just like the iPhone, even though the hardware varies more on WP). You can look at android as the jack of all trades, master of none.
The amount of functionality these new windows phones can achieve is stunning. They can offer the same and much more compared to android due to their excellent hardware optimization, the awesome developing tools (present in 7.5, now they got even better), top of the line sensors and chipsets, and much, much more.
Hell, you can even play computer games on them.
It has lamborghini yellow. That trumps EVERYTHING.

Ok....Firstly, a sincere thanks. Secondly, I admit I was quick to react as, yes, you said it, a quad core, more RAM and a slighlt higher MP cam would have been better.
What I overlooked was the fact that WP DOESN'T need a monster of a hardware backing. YEs. That IS true. I have used HTC HD7 and it was as fast on the last day as it was on first. And that too on the specs it ran on at that time.
Today, to be very very honest, my RaZr does lag sometimes. It all depends, on day one of flashing a new ROM, everything is fast and snappy. But the moment it settles down a bit, slow...lag..
So...I have to admit, the Lumia IS top of the line HW with of course amazing OS.
Thanks all you guys for your replies.

Higher MP count camera: I already pointed out that more MP can actually decrease image quality for cameras with small sensors, and camera phones represent virtually the smallest sensor sizes in the camera world. Do some research and you will find out that the extra MP in phone cameras like the Titan II only result in extra noise in the image. Again, the 920 has a slightly larger sensor size than the next biggest sensor sizes in other top phones (GS3, iPhone 4S, One X), and it makes sense to slightly increase MP count from 8-8.7 MP. Image quality in the end is all that matters, and if 8.7 MP truly is the sweet spot for this camera, then by all means don't give us more MP Nokia.
More RAM: I hardly see this as a point to complain about because the majority of new phones even today still just have 1 MB RAM. Only the very newest Android phones are starting to be released with 2 GB RAM. So, the 920 is doubling the RAM WP devices have (from 512 MB to 1 GB) just like the newest Android phones are doubling from 1 GB to 2 GB. Furthermore, a lot of people are arguing quite convincingly that it's virtually impossible to tell if 2 GB RAM is actually having a noticeable impact on performance of their devices. 1 GB really is sufficient RAM even for an Android. And what's sufficient for an Android phone is overkill for a WP8 device, as much as I hate to admit that as an Android guy.
Quad-core: there are several reasons it's pointless as of right now to hope for quad-core in a WP8 device. First is the fact that very few devices, even Androids, are releasing with quad-cores. Second is the fact that the devices that are being released with quad-cores have quad-cores that aren't worth your time, such as Tegra 3 and Exynos 4412. They're both last gen Cortex-A9 processors. The only quad-core on the near horizon worth your time is the S4 Pro with Adreno 320. I'll say it again: if you really want a quad-core device, the processor you should be waiting for is the S4 Pro. And it's unreasonable to expect it right now because the ONLY phone that has been announced with it so far has been the LG Optimus G. AND on top of that the S4 Pro is expected to be in very limited supply. So it's unreasonable to expect S4 Pro on ANY device released in the next few months (save for the LG, who probably pulled more string than a puppeteer to get them), and EVEN MORE unreasonable to expect it on a WP8 device on which it would be total overkill. If you expect Nokia to give you S4 Pro on the 920 they'll say fine, you can twiddle your thumbs as the release gets pushed back to somewhere in 2013.
Edit: there's something else on top of everything else I just said. I don't know much about WP, but it's entirely possible that WP8 is specifically optimized for dual-core processors. Android's multi-core support is designed to work well with both dual-cores and quad-cores (and theoretically what's beyond), but with MS's tighter grip on the standards for hardware being produced for WP, it is definitely possible that they designed WP8 to be a beast specifically with dual-cores. There's the S4 right now, and there will soon be Cortex-A15 dual-cores coming out in the Exynos and OMAP lines, so if MS did design for dual-core the manufacturers will have a nice selection of next gen dual-cores to work with.

Excellent post, the 920 will definitely be my next phone (unless HTC produce a very special rabbit from a hat!)
I am currently using SGS III (my 7th high end droid over the years), and in all probability it will be my last android phone. Mainly because, over the years I have never found a single droid which was stable / solid performer day in/day out. The issues I faced ranges from un-explainable reboots, hang ups, slow downs/sluggishness etc. etc. So from my experience I'd say most droids have excellent hardware, but extremely crappy OS, which also have iOS's copycat UI (only inferior), but that is just my personal opinion.
To sum up android (thanks to user on another forum):
"Android suffers the Linux** disease of being really interesting for a little while, followed by tears of boredom. When all that's left to talk about is the hardware (read: almost every Android vs. Others comparison is purely hardware-focused), it's clear the OS has lost its charm."
So long and the short of it, I was thinking about going back to iPhone, but then I got my hands on Lumia 800, and having tried it for 2+ months, I think WP is the most efficient*, responsive, and stable mobile OS (I don't really use too many apps, so I don't really care about lower number in WP app store). So I will be getting either Samsung ATIV S or Nokia Lumia 920 (most likely I'll go with 920, as Nokia updates/rolles out new stuff for its phones much quicker compared to Samsung).
* Lumia 800 easily defeated my older droids ie SGS2/Sensation in performance as well.
** I am a Windows 7+Win8x64/Linux user myself.
I currently switch between an HTC One X and an HTC Titan, android has its plus points, but it can be a real pain in the arse, for example sometimes the onex will load up some medoa server thing which eats the battery in about 45 minutes, sometimes the home screen will freeze on loading, if I go too long without rebooting the whole phone slows down and becomes sluggish. No such problems with my Titan! I will be getting me a Lumia 920 as soon as they are released, the Titan will be my spare phone and the onex is going on ebay....

A lot of what you said is how I feel. Android is a lot of fun and I love flashing new ROMs on my Sensation, but it really fails to be something that performs consistently all the time. It is a strange OS that has a ton of quirks and above all else is the least efficient major mobile OS. iOS and WP don't require the same hardware Android does in order to perform well. I was absolutely shocked when I found that the top range WP devices so far have been using an outdated, single-core S2 Snapdragon processor. My Sensation, with a dual-core S3 Snapdragon, and with custom ROMs and overclocked, still lags, stutters, gets hung up trying to leave an app or switch apps, and overall is a less than pleasant experience. Meanwhile, WP devices are blazing smooth on hardware that is several notches below what even midrange Androids have.
To be fair, Jelly Bean is a really good improvement to Android and I think it has established Android as a legitimate player against the next iPhone and WP8. I have yet to try a JB ROM (we have a CM10 ROM and AOKP JB that are both beta-quality), but if it really does eliminate lag I'll be impressed, because I'm not expecting that it will be able to eliminate all the hiccups that my phone tends to have.
WP8 appeals to me as something that will work out of the box, be a steady and powerful performer, offer something different, and I like the idea of having Windows 8 on my laptop and a WP8 phone. I'm like you, I don't use very many apps at all. Give me a good calendar, browser, note app, FB/Instagram, map/nav app, mail app, music apps, news apps, office apps (which is where I would imagine WP would excel lol), and other useful things like banking apps and I'm good to go. Otherwise, my Sensation is filled with games I don't play much and aren't necessary, recovery and backup apps for flashing ROMs, random benchmarks which aren't necessary, performance apps that monitor battery and CPU and stuff that aren't necessary, and other fluff I can do without.
You guys can make that 3.
I too hold a "flagship" Droid right now. But does it lag? Sure. Do I get lost in finding what I want to in the heaps and heaps of apps...? Sure. Do I have tons of games on my SD card which I don't play? Sure.
Is my SD card clogged with more ROMs than pics of my lovely wife? Yes.
Do I spend more time flashing those ROMs than be with my loved ones? Absolutely. Do I open my "app drawer" and just forget what I came here for? Yes...YES YES!
Am I scared with the security this OS gives me for my data? Yes.
Sent from my DROID RaZr.
Lol. I'm not for sure going to switch to WP8, because I still have a bit less than a year of my contract with my Sensation, and I only have very limited actual experience with WP8. By the time march-april rolls around next year, though, there better either be a new amazing Nexus or rumors of an upcoming amazing Nexus with Key Lime Pie or else I'll probably end up with the best WP8 device T-Mobile has to offer. And realistically I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see things like quad-core processors in WP8 devices by that time, so they should be pretty amazing.

Look out the Chinese are coming

Oppo Unveils World's First 1080p Smartphone
12:00 AM - September 12, 2012 by Tuan Mai - source: Phonearena
Chinese manufacturer to release 5-inch smartphone with a whopping 441 PPI screen.
ZoomWhen you think of smartphone titans the first company that comes to mind may be Samsung or Apple. But despite their record high smartphone sales, neither company has achieved what Chinese phone company Oppo has. After releasing the world's thinnest smartphone and the world's thinnest quad core smartphone, the company is back again with the world's first 1080p smartphone.
Dubbed the Oppo Find 5, the 5-inch smartphone features a whopping 441 pixels per inch (PPI), making the iPhone's 326 PPI retina display look like an Etch A Sketch toy from the 60s. Resulting in a crisp 1920 x 1080 display, the Oppo Find 5 knocks the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2 out of the water. Even better, the Oppo Find 5 has just as much beauty on the inside as it does on the surface.
The device is going to ship with Android 4.1 on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor. To get an idea of how powerful this chip is, the APQ8064 easily beats the Exynos 4412-based Galaxy S III and Tegra 3-based Nexus 7 on a number of benchmarks. Other rumored specs include 2GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front facing camera, 16GB or 32GB of storage and a 2,500mAh battery pack.
No word on pricing or a release date just yet, but we'll keep you posted. Until then, we'll just have to hope for a global release so we can all enjoy this promising smartphone.

As i`am beeing a longtime Samsung user and most of the time satiesfied, it is exciting and more important necessary that when more parties are entering with good smartphones that is good for us consumers. It might keeps the big three (Samsung, Apple and HTC) pushing the envelope and produce even better and maybe more price fiendly smartphones. So this is not only related to the S3 forum but for all android devices forums. I as a consumer want the best in quality/price related phone. That doesn`t have to be a Samsung, HTC or any other device per se.
It's harder to sue a Chinese company for patent theft so the way things are going the Chinese companies might be the only real chance to risk some future innovation.

So years of hard work by major players are not worth considering if a new mobile with a killer spec arrives? Releasing a mobile is one part, reliability and software support is another part.
If these Chinese players can do then I'm sure samsung or any other major players can do the very same
1080p sounds jaw dropping, I really doubt the performance of graphics with that resolution. Do exynos5 or adreno 320 has enough power to do so.? Considering the iPad with powervr graphics I think it might be possible.

Um the actual human eye can distinguish up to 1400dpi at smaller distances, don't fall for the urban myth.

Chinese stuff tends to sound good on specs but often usability is terrible....
If these specs are true, the oppo find will probably have better specs than the galaxy S4
I remember looking at the Oppo Find 3 around the time of the SGS2, it was a nice looking phone with good specs, but it was more expensive than the SGS2.

Who knows about quality of Camera, sound, dynamic?
Will see! For now all China phones half a crap
Won't have good dev support= no good
Made in China= everything falls apart when you look at it
Simples!
The problem with the Chinese devices is that they use an annoying version of android like miui, lewa etc. If they just use AOSP with added features and theme they could blow samsung away!

Where do you think the iPhone is made and 65% of Samsung Galaxy, anything can be manufactured in China to quality standards, if the customer pays the correct cost, pushing down the cost to have it cheaper means lower quality parts.

Lg gpad 8.3 or nexus 7 v2 or galaxy pad 3 8

Just confused which one to go far , the prices are coming down daily ,
179 pounds for gpad and £ 129 for pad 3 8 ,
Google nexus 32 gb is 170 pounds

Lame specs? Depends on what you use it for. I have two of them (samsung galaxy tab 3 - 8.0) and the G Pad. Although my LG tablet has far superior specs, the Samsung tablet easily holds its own in video, reading, web browsing etc. Plus the screen is "much" brighter than the LG tablet. If you favor a dimmer screen, the LG is the way to go. Battery is roughly the same on them as well.
Build quality, the LG is definitely more premium with an aluminum back. However, if you are like me and immediately put your tablets in cases, there is literally no difference.
Also, I prefer the physical buttons on the base of the Samsung over the virtual ones on the LG. You get full screen real estate which is a nice bonus.
Given there is a big price delta between the two, perhaps you should provide something vaguely constructive. From your brief comments I can tell you have never used the Samsung tab or had it in conjunction with the LG or you would know how little difference there is in performance. Not to mention, the Samsung screen, despite being lower resolution has zero bleed and no blue line on the screen that many LG owners in this forum have reported. Also the Samsung does not overheat like the LG either...
I suppose if you are using bleeding edge Android games, the LG will come off better but otherwise, there really isn't much of a difference between them.

The major reason the Galaxy Tab 3 8 is lame is resolution. 800 * 1280! Are they not ashamed?! The Galaxy S4 has 1920*1080! When I saw it for the first time the low resoultion made me never consider buying it. Plus, it's much weaker.
OP, if there's such a major price difference, and it's going to be for kids to watch movies (they won't notice the resolution), get the galaxy tab 3 8. Here in israel the galaxy tab actually costs MORE than the G Pad! Absurd right?
BTW, you know there's a "kids edition" Galaxy tab right? Maybe you want to get that one for your kids. It's pricier and it's 7 inch, but comes with kids apps and is much sturdier.

As I mentioned, yes the Samsung screen is lower resolution. You owned one right? Try putting it side by side with an IPad Mini retina, and the G Pad and run the same video on each. Unless you have put a 9GB 1080P mkv file on it, there is literally no difference. Most tv files run at 480P and most movies run at 720P. Given that 720P is 1280x720, a 1280x800 tablet runs it native...
I'm not saying the Samsung is the best tablet out there, it clearly isn't. But for the price, it is a great device. It really comes down to what you use your tablet for the most.
I bought the LG (while owning the Samsung 8") exactly for the reason you mentioned; I wanted a higher res screen and more horsepower. The screen turned out to be much dimmer (something that bothers me to no end) and the extra horsepower does not run the apps I use any faster - video playback, web browsing, Moon+ reader for reading. If I played games on a tablet it might matter.
Here is my 3, Mini Retina, LG G Pad and Samsung 8".
Easy to compare when you have all of them at once.

I have no problem with the brigthness. The resolution is less for movies, more for UI elements and tezt to look more crisp. And BTW - a 720p will look better on a 1080p screen than on a 720p screen, because of the small spaces between the pixels that are visible
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A lot of people is easily falling into the marketing tacticts of manufacturers.
Probably most of the people have 32" or bigger tv's with a maximunm resolution of 1080p, some people even has 1080i or 720p tv's and most of the people is happy with that.
But when a 8" device is sold with 720p screen people complain about it been low resolution, that's crazy...
By the way, I received my G Pad yesterday and as expected it have the light bleedign issue when using in potrait mode. I contacted amazon and they sent me a replacement today which has exactly the same issue. I'm starting to think that all the G Pad's have that f**ing light bleeding issue
I'm thinking if I should ask for a refund and get a Galaxy Tab 3 8 even if it's les powerful and will never be updated again
Mine gpad shows the 7 light bleed on the right side in dom light and the box wad open so will be going back

I just need the G Pad to be brighter so that I can watch my movies. Otherwise it is perfect.

That makes no difference on 720P video or lower quality. It would upscale it according the resolution on the tablet which does not provide a clearer picture.
1280x720 does not look clearer than 1280x720 on a 1920x1200 screen...
Now if you are running at 1080P video on a 720P screen, then there is a difference as it has to downscale. However, not sure how many people run 9 or 10 GB files on their tablets.

I'm telling ya, 720 looks better on 1080 for me! I have a very good eyesight and when a single pixel spreads on several pixels it looks better to me.

I also noticed a lot of light bleeding on two G Pads I had. And even on the one without light bleeding, the screen wasn't as sharp on the edges. Not a fan of the panel I guess. Nexus 7 is terrific. Just a bit too small for me to justify buying one when I have a Nexus 5. Tab Pro on the other hand is an excellent tablet, great display and faster than the Nexus 7.

And I am telling ya.. that it doesn't work that way. Sounds like you are suffering from the placebo effect. Because you think it's better you are perceiving it as such.
I'll explain one last time and if that doesn't work I'd suggest you google the concept.
720P video on a 1080P screen will not be clearer (nor will 480P, the resolution many HD tv programs still run at and the default setting for Netflix). The video player is interlacing and upscaling the video by filling in the unused pixels. It is not clearer unless as I have said twice, you are running a 1080P video on a 1080P screen.
Maybe all the video files you are watching are 10 or 11GB mp4 or mkv 1080P rips from bluray. If that is the case then yes, it will look sharper on a higher resolution screen that does not require software interpolation to fill unused areas.
I'd be willing to bet that if I put two screens side by side and ran an identical video and hid which tablet was which (one at 720p and one at 1080P) you would be hard pressed to determine which is which.
I have buddy's that swear their 1080P tv's are clearer with an HD cable box than they are with a 720P tv. Again, a misnomer. HD cable boxes (at least in Canada) run exclusively at 480P and 720P. There is no cable service in Canada that runs native 1080P. You pretty much need to run a bluray or 4k content to get that resolution "native".
The only place where this may vary is if you are using a tv with a crappy encoding interlacing/deinterlacing engine or an abysmally poor screen. A good 1080P screen vs. a terrible quality 720P screen may actually look better with 720P content because the tv is doing a better job at conversion.
On 8" tablets, it is moot. The pixels are so small to begin with (and most of the screens are made by one of 3 companies) that screen quality will not come into play.
I got my G Tab 8.3 on Friday for 200 British pounds. The tablet had the widely common 7 light bleed so I informed amazon and they sent me a replacement.
On Saturday I received the replacement, which unfortunately also had the light bleeding issue so I started to think if I should ask them for another replacement, ask LG to fix it or simply return it.
Today, Sunday I decided to return both LG G Pads and I bought the Galaxy Tab 3 8" for 130 British pounds.
As everyone knows the Galaxy Tab 3 8" has less resolution, worst cpu, worst gpu and less ram. But the screen is still pretty good, the speakers are better and the performance is still very good even with games like Asphalt 8.
In my opinion and considering that the light bleeding issue on the G Pad 8.3 is the common thing, I would suggest to go for the Galaxy Tab 3 8" if the price difference between both products is big (like it was in my case).
The Galaxy Tab 3 8" is worst, that's true. But it still performs pretty well and it doesn't have manufacture issues.

Nexus 7 v2 hands down
N7v2 is the thing. If you are a technical person, do yourself a favor and read http anandtech.com/show/7231/the-nexus-7-2013-review (not just the summary - soldier on through the whole thing, it is interesting read). - UPDATE I cannot post urls, so had to mangle it
If you are not a geek. First thing first. Disclosure: I work for google (although not android core). With that out of the way, I've handled fair number of devices and feel comfortable sharing my experiences.
Tablets: I own lg gpad 8.3 proper (v500, not the gpe). It feels cheaply made - bill of materials... is not nice. Software is even worse: jerky, slow, and has a ton of crap(ware) that neither I nor you will ever need, yet there is no way to remove it. Sigh. gpad spec-sheet looks ok but as OEM LG managed to drive that device into ground. I hang around here mostly to see if it possible to run gpe software on it, but no dice so far, and even if they manage to do it - the update story is less than clear. I also own n7v2.
Samsung: do not touch(wiz). I do not own latest galaxy tab, but had previous models - forced myself to use it for about 2 weeks and gave it away to extended family. Could not stand touchwiz, slow, crapware - the usual complaints. I had Nexus 10 - nicely made device, but priced a bit too steep for my taste. On the phone front I owned nexus s, galaxy nexus, and galaxy s4 gpe from samsung. Passable experience but still not as smooth and fast as even nexus4, let alone nexus5. For the life of me I do not get why anyone would pay almost twice as much and have a worse experience than nexus5. General takeaway: samsung highest end products are fairly competent, but waaaay overpriced and perform oftentimes worse than competitors. Anything below highest end - do not bother.
N7v2 has the best BOM (bill of materials), touch latency and color reproduction. It is smooth, it is lean. The only real competitor to n7v2 out there [in my mind] is tegra note or tegra pad - whatever it is named now - it is EVGA made device and it gives n7 run for its money. The rest is... [to paraphrase coworker] suboptimal.
That said, if you absolutely must have 8" - go with gpad gpe. I generally do not recommend samsung products to friends and family (for full price). If you get it for third of the price - like I said, their highest end is competent. But I personally recommend GPe devices on play store - no extra crap, smooth-er experience than OEM versions, but unless you have specific requirements - get a nexus. Also read up on tegra pad - it is a bit different device but worth mentioning.
Cheers, -e

Except no Micro SD, no IR Blaster on the N7. I owned both the 2012 and the latest iteration as well. Without a doubt the best 7" tablet out. Samsung's 7" models have always been sub par (except the Tab 7.0+ which was actually pretty decent for when it was out).
The thing is, comparing an 8" and a 7" tablet is kind of pointless. They are different size brackets. It's like comparing a compact car to a mid sized sedan. The extra inch of real estate (and narrow bezels on the Samsung and LG 8" tablets) makes for quite a difference in usage.
The G Pad feels cheaply made? I thought you owned one... The aluminum back makes it the most premium Android tablet to date and is very similar in quality to the IPad Mini. The Nexus 7 does not even come close in build quality. Seeing as the G Pad is selling for $250 currently, it is definitely a better deal if you were to compare them directly.
Screen, I have to say I agree with you there. The LG picture is excellent, great color saturation but it's far too dim for my taste while the N7v2 is incredibly bright.
Also software on the LG, most of the junk can be disabled or uninstalled outright. I was quite surprised/pleased by how much I could turn off. I currently have around 1.15 GB of free RAM at any given time.
Going back to my prior comment about size though. Once you go to an 8" tablet, personally I could never go back to a 7". It's just too small for web browsing. Reading and video playback is fine but the extra real estate makes a big difference elsewhere.
There is a reason Apple has sold millions of 7.9" Mini's and that every other manufacturer has jumped on the 8" form factor- it is the sweet spot for tablets. There is an 8" Nexus pending as well.
Seriously, what the hell? Cheaply made feel? Your out of your mind. The Gpad' body is premium buddy. The 600 processor is fast as hell. The ips display is beautiful. The reason you don't see that many roms is because stock and xposed is down right amazing.

LG G4: first benchmark

LG G4 is now on hands of a fiew reviewer, here's first benchmarks I've found for now!
(French site, at the end of the article, and no it's not good)
http://www.frandroid.com/marques/lg/281610_prise-en-main-du-lg-g4-a-la-recherche-de-la-difference
Benchmarks doesn't bother me. The G3 didn't do to we'll either, and mine is definitely fast enough and are more or less lag free since the lollipop update. Still love the G3 so I'll think I pass this year. But I definitely like the looks of the G4 and I'm really excited to see how much better the screen is and how well the camera will perform in manual mode [emoji106] [emoji2]
Benchmarks won't show the really benefits. The device is really smooth and can open apps as fast as any other flagship. I mean the camera app can open in 0.6 secs and take a phot at the same time. If you do not care about superficial numbers the device won't disappoint as a daily driver.
Wrong thread
The scores aren't surprising. The G4 will have only 2 A57s compared to the S6, and the GPU is noticeably different from the 810. There's also LDDR3 in the G4 while the S6 uses LDDR4 & a very fast eMMc chip.
In normal usage I imagine most won't notice the core count. Because of the G4's high price I hope someone can compare its speed side by side with a zenfone 2 or even another Snapdragon 615/800/805/etc.

Currently using LG G2 and bit disappointed when I see poorest battery result from G3 so skip and since than waiting for G4, I am Enthusiast photographer and using Nikon D7100 with costliest Sigma £596 for lens only with F1.8 fo it’s very interesting to see how £750 DSLR + £596 lens compared with G4 or P8 LOL, I know that recent techno is not even nearby DSLR quality, I would surely buy if Camera and battery of G4 perform better than Huawei P8, I don't believe or worry much in benchmarks figure as most of them are not noticeable in real life, As I don't play high graphics intense game, I believe LG must have done through test before choosing 808 and if it for better battery life against figures than I prefer Battery life, I am absolutely pleased with performance, Screen quality, Earphone sound of G2 if it would have been released exact thing in recent time I would still prefer to buy, When I see S6 live particularly in gold/silver colour it seems to me as really overdone and cheap design, it remind me things when in 2010-11 when lot of folks specially girls prefer to put shiny and mirror looking screen protector in from of their iPhone so they do makeup on the go, S6 is less than evolution and glass and reflective things is not a big achievement or breakthrough BTW it’s subjective matter and I know more crowd following iPhone/Samsung trend than LG but I don't want to join unwise and hypnotized crowd, I think design wise P8 is better than S6 but still can't decide which one look better P8 or G4?
There is a benchmark video out. The G3 is right next to the G4 while the G4s score wasn't amazingly high it was still a decent score for a flagship and it was leaps and bounds faster than the poor G3. The link is below. Sad fact, it scores better than my G Flex 2. More than likely because of thermal throttling :/

Not good?
I read "First impressions are good, the Korean manufacturer seems to have made the right choices, abandoning the Snapdragon 810 and developing its own photo sensor."
I don't sweet these at all. I want to use it in my hand and see myself as that is more real than anything.
According with Qualcomm:
Adreno 418 (S808): 20% better than 330
Adreno 420 (S805): 40% better than 330
Adreno 430 (S810): 70-80% better than 330
Overall, The S805 is better than S808 in heavy tasks but I understand the 64bit thing marketing. Bad choice by LG going with S808

Too me, the benchmarks here look fine. If you look at the T-Rex and Manhattan tests for the onscreen (the tests that matter) the G4 is only 6 and 2 fps behind the S6 (the only smartphone with the same resolution)

That 6 and 2 fps may translate into bigger differences in real world gaming performance as GFX benchmark is a unrealistically heavy GPU benchmark.
Btw its still a 18% over the adreno 330 in G3 , so if you were fine with G3's performance then G4's graphic performance at least should not be a concern.

Until we have a true lens zoom phone (kind of physically hard to do), I am not a big fan of using phones for main photos. Nothing cracks me up more though than the media or some posters talking about photography and then actually review the digital zoom on phones, which is literally just digital zooming of the original focal point. No different than taking the picture and later post zooming the pictures.

The gpu in the 801 choked with 1440p and one of the reasons for the heat, judder and battery life impact. The 808's gpu can handle 1440p and is within the mean of it's threshold of performance, but the 801 was at the very top of it's ceiling for 1440p- hence the issues. Well, that and the gosh awful lcd technology used for the the display on the G3. LG took a semi efficient 1080p design and shrunk it to a very inefficient 1440p on the G3.

According with Qualcomm:
Adreno 418 (S808): 20% better than 330
Adreno 420 (S805): 40% better than 330
Adreno 430 (S810): 70-80% better than 330
Overall, The S805 is better than S808 in heavy tasks but I understand the 64bit thing marketing. Bad choice by LG going with S808

What else could they do besides wait about six more months? Apple and Samsung have secured most other chipset fab production and the only other option is the second tier chips that are in the cheaper devices. The road map was to use the 810, but the poor thermals with the 810 resulted in going with the 808 (810 light). The other option was go with the 805, but spec chasing will not allow that. The 808 was a compromise, but LG is hoping the design and camera offsets this for the spec and media hounds.
Qualcomm riding shotgun at the LG press event was very telling of the heat the chipset maker is in right now.
Some more bencmarks, in Swedish but just look at the graphs.

Looks better because the HTC one M9 is missing.

Was it just me or did the G4 burn through the benchmark faster than any of the other phones even though it started last? What's with that? Is it a difference in user (interface) difference? Does this translate to a better performing phone overall that cannot be quantified with a benchmark?

I noticed that and was wondering the same thing tbh
Any significant reason why it finished the test faster? I'm hoping this device will open apps without any lag. That's the main thing I hate. If I open an app I want it to be fast/instant, which is what I'm hoping an optimized android like this will do.
Side question. If I disable two of the A57 cores in an 810 would that solve thermal issues? Wondering if it's worth my time to do

In theory it should do.... I suppose there is a kernel in the m9 thread for disabling the cores....
Thanks! . I'll look into it. I have a G Flex 2 though v.v

Impatient for the device of the gods

Of course I'm talking about the Moto x 3rd Gen.I honestly can't wait. I feel like a little kid waiting to open Christmas presents. I seen the leaked render of this device just a little bit ago, It looks great. The picture was pixelated and blurry but you could see the jest of it. The camera, flash and dimple are all lined up in this rounded-rectangle strip on metal on the back. It looks very premium, the front of the phone just simply looks like a streamlined flat AMOLED panel with 2 front facing speakers (at least that's what is seems to be). I guarantee all Moto users are going to be proud of this device. like come 'on 4GB on RAM! and look at that chipset and pixel density. This is going to be a gift from the higher up.

Not that much. I'm waiting for next nexus instead like every year. I hope they lower the size of display.

Same. I am more intrigued with the Nexus because of Google I/O:
1. I am certain a fingerprint scanner will be included
2. USB type C. Now that is something to be happy about
3. OIS and all that camera stuff will be in the next Nexus
4. Wireless charging & fast charging. Both of best worlds
5. Having the latest Android OS version. Android M is going to be awesome, I want it. I will consider buying a Nexus this year if rumors of an LG one is correct (or Huawei), depending on price
6. A lot of the specs will be the same as the first post
not enough of an upgrade to get me to buy day one. maybe after the price drop.

Yes, I'm also interested in what Nexus is going to put out this year. I know that's its going to have an outstanding spec sheet, It always does. That fingerprint scanner would be nice, unfortunely i don't think the new Moto X will have it but you never know. It's more than likely that the new Moto X will be guaranteed updates after it's intial release. Hopefully Motorola improves the camera, OIS would be great and they need to work on getting consietent high quality photos. Image processing needs to be improved also. I tryed the Nexus 6 for about a month and it was perfectly fine in preformance but it's too large. I think the next Nexus smartphone should have a 5.5 inch display at most. Wireless charging & fast charging im sure will be in the new Moto X. LG or Huawei huh? Both are great cmpanies. LG with its G4 and Huawei with its P8. My vote is on Huawei. I also seen the new Moto G rumored specs. 2GB of RAM, larger battery, higher MP count, 16GB base model, same 5 inch screen but in 1080p this time around, Better chipset and more. It amazes me how fast technology is evolving, if the new Moto G would of came out last year it could sure contend with some flagship smartphones.
The only thing that stands out for me is the 1080p video capture at 120fps (slow mo). Not really enough for me to want the new Moto X. I'll most likely wait for the price to be dropped before biting the bullet.
In regards to the new Nexus, I'll never buy a Nexus phone again after owning the Nexus 4 and 5 - awfully bad call quality issues and a lack of acknowledgement from Google (poor support). Nexus 6 was just stupid with it's almost 6" display lol. Probably get laughed at trying to hold that thing against my ear!! Anyway I don't think I can do without Moto Voice, it's too good!

Yeah, me too. The only reason I jumped to Moto X 2014 is because of Nexus 6 size. Previously I've always used the Nexus line.

Yeah, the 1080p 120fps slow mo will be great im sure of it. The specs that didn't exaclty stand out but were a little unexpected were the battery life & the RAM. I wasn't expeting such a leep in battery capacity to go from 2300 to 3280 mAh is awesome, that almost a 1000 mAh gain. I was expecting something in the ballpark between 2600-2900 mAh which is still good depending on the display and hardware. I was expecting 3GB of RAM for some reason. Maybe it's becuase the Moto X has always seemed to be 1GB of RAM lower than other flagships that came out during the same time. I guess Motorola is stepping up. As far as the expected changes and improvements i knew that Motorola would improve: the camera, chipset and display resolution. It's kinda unfortunate that the new Moto X will most likely not have expandable storage but at least the got rid of the 16GB variant. I am also gonna wait for a price drop, maybe around christmas or so and yes Moto Voice is beyond helpful, i love it. I think that's the dominant reason why i would choose the Moto X 2014 over the Nexus 6, well that and size of course.
I really hope that the MotoX 3rd Gen will have two models, one as large as the Nexus 6 or MotoX Pro (China). I really loved the MotoX and Nexus 6 and own both, but the Nexus 6 without Moto Display is disappointing. I've considered buying one from China, but I don't know if Google services can be installed afterwards. Anyhow, Motorola is about to grace us with a new device so its smarter to wait it out.
If any if these rumors are true, I'll be a happy camper.

Oh I forgot about the bigger battery. That'll be my other reason to want to switch but not straight away, probably when the price drops.
I don't really care about 4GB RAM at all. I think 2GB is more than enough for what most people would do on a smartphone. I've never ever felt like the RAM capacity is slowing me down or anything.
