Does the note 4 have FM radio or the hardware for one? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Cant seem to find an answer to this anywhere, here in aus we don't have unlimited data so streaming apps are out of the question has samsung finally woken up to itself and put in an fm radio? Or at least the hardware inside the phone to use an after market app like spirit FM?
Although the note 4 is full of awesomeness, If not i think its time for me to look else where for a phone maybe the next HTC will be up to par?
thanks for any help.

wow so even people that own the phone dont know if it has an fm radio, this is crazy i cant find the answer to this anywhere....

I don't think many people here have Note 4 yet, but judging from the past I don't think it will have one. Now funny part is, almost all Samsung phones in the past had radio hardware but it was disabled. There was a developer who wrote a program to enable it in some phones, but he speculated that for example Note 3 had antenna shorted to the ground, so even with his program it wouldn't work, unless you were brave enough to actually do some soldering. If I had to speculate, I would lean towards carriers requesting radio to be eliminated, they don't make money if you use free fm radio, instead of streaming, but that could mean some versions could have it. In many places Note 4 should be available any day now, so we should know more then.

it does have fm chip
Only sprint allows you to use it. The rest of the carriers have not activated it yet. Read the next radio website for more information

I believe Sprint Note 4 uses specific modem (radio) which includes fm radio tuner too. It is not about carriers not activating that feature, it is not included in hardware in other models of Note 4.

Any update on this? I own SM-910F, Orange carrier here in Romania.
I also don't seem to find the info about built-in FM chip into this specific Note 4 model.
For all it matters, I do know it's Snapdragon CPU powered.
If I rooted the phone, would I be able to use the FM chip inside?
@ OP: have you been able to dig up more on this? Thanks!

Root is required, You could try borrowing the apk for FM radio and the lib files from a "sprinter" and placing in your system. Thats the place to start.

Look at Nextradio apps supported devices page, find your device in my case Note 4.
Unless a Boost Mobile, Sprint, or Virgin Mobile version of a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 differs from a AT&T or Verizon version then I highly doubt any version of the Note 4 is lacking an FM radio chip. I recall AT&T unlocking the feature in the near future for the Note 4 *hint*. Not to mention Samsung purposely didn't advertise the fact *hint*. So logic says yes it's there and for some reason carriers are playing the "we didn't know" game and prefer to force you to use your data so it would seem. Since voice, and text is unlimited nowadays. I've called Verizon and even their reps are advertising it doesn't exist for the Note 4. But I know better! xD

Wow, that's great news. (And I even thought this ropic was dead, even more so with recent note 5 hipe and all).
Really appreciate your contribution to this and since I'm in Europe and not following US mobile tech events, if you could just let us know whether or not AT&T unlocking FM ever happens, would mean a great deal.
Still havent rooted my note 4 and moreover I'm in greater doubt than ever before, if it's worth doing it - perhaps time to sell it is near and it unrooted means better resell value.
If I would just know for sure if my specific SM 910F model has real physical inbuilt FM hardware chip, I'd definitely go for it.

This only means those carriers are enabling the FM chip. Boost and Virgin both use Sprint towers I believe so they all have Sprint hardware with their own front end.
*You all should take into account that I'm merely researching and interpreting it all to my logic. It may differ from yours.

Any updates on Radio tuner enabled? I'm just curious if you got it to work.

What would be the case if I bought my Note 4 phone unlocked, from an electronics sales Samsung representative (not from a carrier)? is there a way to find out if the hardware is installed?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 SM_N910G with Resurrection Remix 5.8.3 on it. How do I activate it if i do not have any carrier to go too because I live in australia.

Korean Galaxy S II has NFC!!! *pics*

Just got my hand on a Korean Samsung Galaxy S II. Found a NFC option under Setting menu. Then i removed the back cover, and found the NFC logo on the battery??!!? Could it be the battery is where the NFC tag is at?

What do you guys think?
Interesting
This is super interesting! From your pics I see that the phone has 4 connector pins, how many does the battery have? How many does the Indian battery have? I am inclined to believe this is the mystery behind "Optional NFC".
It would be interesting to see some side on shots compared to a standard SGS II - I hear the NFC version is somewhat thicker?
AFAIK, the KOREAN SGS2 had NFC since launch. lol
sd card slots not in the same place either
An NFC-chip inside the battery would actually make sense. It has a large surface area inside the phone, which would make the NFC handling easier.
However, the design is completly different. On the non-NFC GS2, the microSD cardslot is on the left side and the battery connectors are on the right side. Some small differences with the SIMcardslot and the external antenna connector too. So it seems its more than just the battery.
What are the specs on this version? Do they use the AT&T US frequencies?
Just a quick question: Have you checked 3G bands on the phone?
I heard that the Korean version is NOT quad-band, and am just wondering if you could check that.
Thanks.
I mentioned this a while ago.

It's my understanding that the phone extends the NFC antenna onto the battery so signals don't get blocked by the battery.
It's tri-band only. Don't know why they'd do that though.

I think this version is quad-band GSM and quad-band UMTS. Not sure, I dont have the box with me. Will test this with AT&T in the states when i get back there next month.

How do you check to see if it's tri-band or quad-band GSM/UMTS?
can you pls dump the stock ROM u have in that SGS2 ? it might be useful... i dont know in what way, but may be yes or may be no...
just curious.... from that pic its quite clear that the battery has the NFC chip built in to the SGS2..... thats amazing...
thats why samsung has maded such a thin plastic backcover... i guess so.... nice thinking & it is an indirect clue i am almost sure....

Was on one of the Korean Samsung Spec pages. Lost the link. Although I don't see why they'd make the international version quad band and the domestic version tri band, makes no sense. There's a number code you can enter to check the phone's settings/hardware. It didn't seem to work for me though.
BTW how did you manage to get the phone? It's my understanding you can't buy it outright here unless you're on a visa. Unless you're on a visa...
@manuvaidya:
They've been dumped already. They were dumped a few days after the phone was released. Seems like it's just not that interesting to devs here.

I hope so, we can just purchase the battery and/or sim if both are needed and we get NFC.
I guess NFC in the future release might mean it comes with a NFC enabled battery.

Photos of AT&T Galaxy S II with a slide out keyboard including benchmarks??

BGR has a new post that has photos of what they believe to be the AT&T version of Galaxy S II with a slide out keyboard. It also includes a couple of benchmarks; Linkpack and Quadrant. I can't believe that AT&T would do this... looks like I'm not getting the AT&T version...
http://www.bgr.com/2011/07/26/exclusive-images-of-atts-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-revealed/
oh my GOD thats ugly!! good thing i live in the UK, no carriers changing my device
Looks really ugly, it will just add to phone's thickness.. and even the camera looks weird in those photos!
Electricpig notes that the Linpack benchmark is about 18.6% higher than an unlocked Galaxy S II (58.544 MFLOPS vs 47.606 MFLOPS)... leading them to suspect that they bumped the CPU from 1.2 to 1.4. However, Quadrant doesn't seem to show much improvement (3056) but then again, Quadrant isn't the most consistent benchmark.

is it just me or does the phone seem smaller than a international gs2 across the front of the screen? did they drop it down to 4"?
If Sprint also drastically changes the design then they have lost my purchase.

Corporate users love keyboards. They are also a prime target for LTE. Going this route kind of makes sense if this is their first LTE phone launched. I'm glad I got the unbasterdized version. Remember, the Z/R got FCC approval on AT&T's bands too. Maybe they'll carry that one also as their more consumer oriented version.
i'm not convinced this is att's official (or only) sgs2. the layout is completely different: camera placement, bottom physical button for instance.

Does this...
Or this...
Look like this...
SGH-i897 is the model number for AT&T's SGS1 so the model number for whatever phone's in the first post uses the same naming convention. Last round, Sprint got the keyboard. This time it looks like it'll go to AT&T.
damn, you're right. our only hope is this is not AT&T's version.
My biggest concern is that AT&T will screw with it so much that we'll need special developers for it. I think I would lose my mind if I went to flash a super duper kernel and it blew up in my hands.
Thank goodness I got the unmolested version of this device. Leave it to US carriers to take something amazing then ruin it.

Even if they left the majority of the phone as-is, you'll never be able to flash international ROMs due to the different radio(s). I'm sure devs working on it will be able to re-use a lot of what's already been developed but the phone will be too different to share s/w with other versions.
I just got really dissapointed really quickly. Im fine with having four buttons but the slide out keyboard is almost the point of being useless

The captivate for ATT can use international sgs 1 roms with a kernal that rotates the screen correctly the only difference is that the FM radio didn't work on the captivate as there was no FM radio.
ATT world phones use the same international frequencies as international phones. i currently have an internationall sgs2 and am using it with att with 4g.
keyboard not for me.... Good that I got the international sgs2
Also the Samsung galaxy R kinda looks nice and solid, even though lower specs and slightly thicker.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Its like they didn't want to release a phone thinner than the iPhone and maybe this even dissolves them of being liable and possibly being sued for selling it as-is. I'm not trying to be a fandroid or anything but I can't help think the ongoing legal battles between samsung and Apple somehow effected the outcome ... disenchanted ... but still optimistic ... would be nice to get new dimensions and weight of this bastardizes phone.

Big plus is that it's alegedly equipped to access Att LTE.
This data connection really has me teetering on selling it.

Optional NFC ?

Today I met samsung representative in CPW, who told me that there's no NFC option for galaxy note but it may differ in other countries.
That would alright if it wasn't for engadget article, which clearly states that there's NFC controller inside (NFC controller: NXP PN544).
Does anyone have an idea if it would be possible to use NFC technology if the controller is already inside the device(assuming we'll get ICS)?
I have seen on engadget too.. I think gnote has nfc support maybe with updating ics
That engadget found nfc informations in the firmware does not mean the chip actually is inside the device. Could be available just in another regio...
Engadget just reported what Supercurio mentioned. May be the phone Supercurio got is not UK version. (donno which country he is from)

Currently there is only one version of phone in the market. European version
If the Note does have an NFC chip, wouldn't it be listed in the spec sheet of the user manual? Can someone verify this?
Forget it guys, the EU note don't have nfc, its is only for the korean market, same as LTE
Yep, samsung stripping nfc from another device because " the market in europe isn't ready for nfc". I'm pretty sure the market would grow considerably if you started putting NFC on your devices since most people will go for a 20 month + contract...
No NFC here either even for the prototypes on display (which didn't have the S-Pen even though its listed on the spec sheet.

I have NFC what use that technology will be until there are a lot more devices out there that support it.
NFC Is probably in the battery, if you check the t-mobile sgs2 t989 you can see what i mean! So its just a battery change, and you'll probably have nfc!

We need 3 things; 1e hardware, this controller and an antena, (secure element not embedded in this controller but only important for payments, and can be added with SIM- or microSD- card.
2e software, ICS not essential, Android 2.3.? supports NFC, just not with Beam app out of the box.

Will the Note II Have different dimensions with the US carriers?

The Note II recently passed trough the FCC for the AT&T, T-mobile and Verizon version.
I wanted to put in a link, but since i am a new user, I can't.
What immediately struck my eye is that the drawings are all different shapes. I don't know how far we can rely on these drawings or shapes to be accurate but it worries me. They did the same with the Galaxy s2. My t-mobile version is completely different compared to the international version for example.
Also when you read some of the test documents on the FCC website, it mentions some dimensions of the phone and they are for each carrier different.
I hope this is not the case, because it would make it harder to find accessories.
engadget[dot]com/2012/09/28/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-variants-for-att-t-mobile-verizon-at-fcc/
^I'm also a new poster, so you'll have to append the actual "." where it says [dot]. I don't know anything about FCC documents, but as far as leaked images and non-FCC reports go, there's no indication that we're going to get the debacle that unfolded pre S III days. Pictures of Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and US Cellular variants (some of them are test units) have already been leaked or released and they all retain the same shape with the only cosmetic differences being the branding.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/28/...or-att-t-mobile-verizon-at-fcc/#disqus_thread here s a screenshot
Thanks for the tip Paul2834 and for the screenshot deeznutz1977.
And indeed we saw the devices for the carriers and nothing suggested different shapes for each.,
So I hope this is the case. If you read some of the test results from PCtest engineering laboratory Inc for the FCC they mention that the dimensions for the Verizon device are 80,5mm x 151mm, while the same company states the dimensions for the T-Mobile version are 77mm x 146mm.
But I guess we will have to wait until released. They kept the same form for the SIII, so I would be surprised they didn't do this for the Note II, especially if they are launching them all at the same time.
I'll be buying the T-Mobile variant and I actually wouldn't mind the Note II being a bit smaller. I don't think we'll have to wait until release. T-Mobile will hopefully give us some release pics or specs in advance.
It would also surprise me if the phones had different dimensions.
This launch is going exactly the same as the SIII and they were all the same.
If I were a betting man I would say they will all be the same size.
What is the likelihood that the actual device is different that the FCC filing. The papers are what 2-3 weeks old? It's not like it was some super early test model then right? One would have to assume that of these were being tested after ifa that if they were going to be the same dimensions the FCC would show that. Or does this happen often that FCC documents are off on specs? I am just hoping they are all the same that's most likely a deal breaker for me.
The Only carrier that we have not seen yet is Verizon.

Really???
Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy S2.
It was a pretty big deal for the Galaxy S3 to be identical across all carriers.
T-Mobile Version.
They will all be the same. This confirms it even more

This is good news.
Also like the fact that the branding of the providers in on the back with this smartphone.
My t989 (T-mobile's Galaxy s2) has it in the front. now you can get a new back cover and can loose the carrier logo
Doesn't make sense to even ask this question. The screen size is one of the biggest selling point of this device. Making it smaller kinda defeats the purpose of it.

Shannon 333 Modem

I have been wondering about baseband(s) in the S6/Edge. The teardown video did not reveal anything about it due to shared heat sinks blocking the markings on various chips. Then I found this nugget from AT&T's specs listing for the S6/Edge.

All I know so far is that this modem was used in the 3rd variant of the Note 4 after the S805/Exynos 5433. There were rumors that Samsung would produce a new version of Note 4 using S810, but it turned out to be Exynos 5433 + Shannon 333 modem which was named Note 4 S-LTE. I believe this model was Korea-only at the time.

There has been scarcely anything known about this modem. I am hoping to learn more about it.
Entering Service Mode might tell you a lot about the capability of the modem, I think.
Shannon 333 LTE Modem
I just learned about Samsung using this modem in the S6 in the last 2 days. I Pre-Ordered an S6 Edge on March 27 and it arrived March 31. Almost immediately I noticed a much larger than normal drain on the Battery. I also noticed something even more unusual given my observations of Android Devices. It seems the highest battery drain on my T-Mobile S6 Edge is coming from "Cellular Standby." I have taken the liberty of uploading a screenshot. My observation is that, almost without fail, the screen is usually the largest consumer of battery power on Android Devices.
When I learned that Samsung ditched the Snapdragon SoC for the S6, I loved the idea. I've had a Note 10.1 2014 with the Exynos 5420 for some time now and love the performance. Performance is similarly awesome in the S6 with the 7420. I can't help but wonder though, if the Shannon 333 LTE Modem is at the root cause of the inordinate battery drain. Is it a hardware issue or a software issue?
With the little research I've done I have been able to determine that there is a bit of a difference in the LTE transmission frequencies between the networks used in Europe and Asia and the networks used in North America. I wonder if I am on the right track.
So if anyone reading this knows more on the subject than I do; I'd sure love some feedback.
The FCC documents filed for every phone shows how the radios perform. The S6 sprint was average.

That's irrelevant because the Sprint version doesn't use this modem.

Which modem does the Sprint/Verizon version use? Is it not the Exynos 333 modem?

The issue has been confirmed to be related to having wifi and wifi calling on. It's an issue that has plagued most 5.0.2 devices. Turning those two things off results in cell standby disappearing from battery section.

MDM9635. Qualcomm still has a monopoly on CDMA.

I wonder if this has any affect on battery life. Although I've read the phone no longer does SVLTE which equalizes power usage on standby for calls etc.
Are you with Anandtech? If so when will the review be coming?
The reviews around the net are good but does not mention which version of the phone ie. carrier is being used.
my 2 cents

End of this week / early next week. All US reviews out there use the T-Mobile version with the SS333. I don't think any media has the Quaclomm modem yet unless they got it from the carriers.
Does Verizon use Qualcomm?

Yes, all the CDMA variants are using a Qualcomm modem.

More info on this would be appreciated if found...
Still hoping for some information on this modem
This modem is horrible. Probably why I have poor reception on my Galaxy S6 Edge.
Likely a stupid question.

I am trying to determine if a modem flash is capable of allowing a switch from gsm to cdma. Are the shannon 333, or MDM9635 able to be altered in this was, or is it completely impossible, because a hardware change is necessary?
