Erratic battery life on GT-i9500 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I've been having quite the annoying issue for the past 3-4 weeks. After accidentally updating the Knox firmware to version 2.0 (Screw Knox), I've noticed a huge drop in battery life. My phone takes longer to charge and takes no time going from 100% - 52% after school. Various examples of my phone's erratic battery life include my battery life dropping from 100% - 95% in 10 minutes doing nothing. No background apps, all apps killed using the task manager, all the air view/air gesture/smart pause stuff off, Power Saving mode on and brightness all the way down. This is with no usage whatsoever. Before the erratic battery issues, it wouldn't drop a single percent.
With minimal usage, such as scrolling through Instagram and Facebook, it drops from 100% to around 90% whereas before It might drop to 98 or 97%. Playing games or watching YouTube videos drops the phone from a full charge to 85% or below - within 15 minutes or less.
I've noticed my battery really dropping whenever I go on the bus ride. On the bus, I listen to music for about 25 - 30 minutes and the battery usually drops to 97 - 95% percent. I don't do anything else besides listen to music on the bus ride to school. After Knox 2.0, my battery goes from 100 - 90, 87, or 84%. I used to /come/ home with around 83% battery remaining. Now I come home with around 60-50% battery remaining.
I'm really annoyed with this issue since my battery isn't as good as it was before. I've had the phone for almost a year (December 2013 is when I got it), so it doesn't make sense to me that the battery would decrease in life that quickly. I hope someone can a find remedy for this issue. I've heard rooting could work, but I've never done it before and I've heard Knox makes rooting a pain in the neck.

●Flash philz recovery via odin
●Run the deknox script
●Boot into recovery and in philz options re-root phone.
●Download supersu from playstore and you have root now.
●Check with root checker
This link has Deknox script, Philz recovery and Omega kernel
No pain in the a$$ or neck or wherever..
AFTER ROOTING
●Flash omega kernel by booting into recovery (you can download one from omega files on playstore)
●after flashing, do not immidiately turn the phone on, wait for 5 mins..and then turn it on
AFTER FLASHING OMEGA KERNEL
●Download battey calibration app by NeMa (i use that) From Here
●Charge to 100%
●Calibrate
●Disharge till the phone drops dead
●Charge and use with "greenify" services on.
IF STILL THE PROBLEM PERSISTS
■Try a custom rom
Then
■TRY COMADOSE

Thanks for the fast reply. I still want to keep some Touch wiz features so I'm not sure if they'll get removed in the process.

Nothing will happen to the touchwiz.
Plus there are touchwiz based roms too.
Touchwiz remqins intact. Just the crappy knox gets removed.

Alright, will root soon. Since I've never rooted, is there a step by step thing I should follow? Not really sure what to do with the files you linked.

The omega kernel is there if you want to change the kernel.
It is almost a stock kernel and has some tweaks.
It is better than the stock kernel anyday.
You can download the file named "OMEGA...." from the link and place it in any of the folders, flash it via recovery and give it a try.

Greenify is an app which hibernates the apps which you think might drain battery.
Also download wakelock detector for any such apps..and greenify them.

Since my phone is rooted, I'd figure I'd remove some of the Samsung bloatware that comes with the phone. What bloat removal tool is recommended? I've heard of people using System App Remover (root) by Jumobile and Titanium Backup to remove bloatware. Also, what apps are safe to remove? I want to remove these apps:
Allshare Cast Dongle
Blurb Checkout
ChatOn Voice and Video chat
Flipboard
Google Play Books
Google Talkback
Kids Mode
KLMS Agent
S Travel
Samsung Hub
Samsung Link
Samsung WatchON

Still it will have a binary count of 1 and the system status of "custom" so you cannot claim warranty at this condition.

Refer to the ROM threads of Balliboxer and k2wl for a list of removed apps. You can remove those apps based on their list using Titanium backup.

Theres absolutely no way Triangle away by chainfire makes binary count to 0 and system status as official. If it dose not work reset the counter again using triangle away
Samsung had added system status just recently. It is not there on the galaxy note. So we hope that chainfire et al will find a way to reset system status in the future.

[Q] How Do I Remove "Custom" Status and Boot Animation?

I am planning on taking my phone to Best Buy to have them re-flash the stock image. I currently uninstalled root, and I don't have a bootloader installed. If i go into download mode, it shows custom status, and binary count = 1, along with a custom start-up animation. I didn't flash a ROM (obviously because I'm on MF3). Is their any way I can remove this? I removed root through Super Su's settings, but if it is required to reset this information to it's official state, I can re-root.
If their is no way, is it for sure we will ever be able to use ODIN to restore the stock MF3 software?
Also, will Triangle Away work on MF3?
Thanks.

I am paranoid about not being able to reset my phone. My recovery is corrupt, and their is no way to reset if anything goes wrong. I don't feel like it is stable if that makes sense.
Oh and to everyone reading this for information, best buy said they can't do anything sense I didn't purchase my phone there. I got my phone at AT&T so they said I should contact them.

This is a common issue on MF3, but I tried using goo.im and using the hard buttons while booting up. I think my actual recovery is corrupt. I think I'll try best buy saying Samsung referred me and if that doesn't work I will look into J-tag. Thanks.

There are 3 ways using hardware buttons.
First
1. Hold volume up+ power
2. When the splash screen shows remove your finger from power.
Second
1. hold home+volume up+power.
2 when the splash screen shows, remove your finger from power
Third.
1.Boot into the OS.
2.Hold the power button for the power menu. And keep holding it until the phone turns black and remove your finger from the power button.
3. immediately press the volume up button and hold it.

Wrong update path?

I'll just start with how I flashed from the beginning
I337UCUAMDB - May 2, 2013
CASUAL
Stayed there for a while.
Last night I wiped:
/data, /cache, /dalvik, and /system
Flashed Hyperdrive RLS12
Flashed RLS12 - AT&T Compatibility Pack
Rebooted
It seemed to boot fine, but when I unlocked the screen the Google keyboard immediately force closed, then system quit responding so I couldn't even click the Ok button on the force close dialog for a couple minutes. Even after this, everything was very slow. I quickly realized that most of my hardware buttons were misbehaving. Either they only worked when I long pressed them, or they didn't work at all, except for the Home button.
I suspected that the AT&T Compatibility zip was the kernel I would need to make this Verizon-based ROM work on my phone but I wasn't sure if that's true or if I would need a separate kernel zip to flash.
Afterwards I ended up using Odin twice to return to stock MDB and then CASUAL to get root and recovery back.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Have you read it's thread and directions for at&t users ?
Normally if you had a wrong kernel it wouldn't even boot. Honestly if you are new I'd stick to at&t or i9505 ported ROMs. MDB allows you free reign to try all the ROMs.
I suspect you got a bad download or something was missing.
Sent from my SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I'm not new to flashing per se but I broke this phone two weeks after I bought it and just recently got it fixed. I included everything because I wasn't sure where something may have gone wrong. Maybe I came from the wrong base or something. I'll link to this thread in the ROM thread

What recovery are you using?
TWRP from CASUAL
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Well you didnt have to odin bud. Just make a backup of the rom your on in twrp. Leave it on your sd. I backup to external bc it takes too much space on internal. And try flashing the rom again. Maybe redownload it bc it might be a bad download. I too had the keyboard force closing so I reflashed and only checked swype keyboard in the installer so no more keyboard fc. If you have an issue after flashing the rom just boot recovery and restore your backup instead of using odin.
The hardware button issue and slowness is from force closing. When something fc"es the whole system kinda freezes up and becomes unresponsive. Just dont install any keyboards from the aroma except swype. Try it that way and let it sit for a few minutes after booting. I also suggest using ktoonsez 4.3 tw kernel. You can find it under origional development and flash in recovery after roms installed
As far as how you flashed everything was done right. You can try not wiping manually and just choose full wipe in the aroma installer.
Hope everything goes well if not then just come back here and let us know so we can help
---------- Post added at 02:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:55 PM ----------
Also get the app greenify and greenify everything but your launcher
I had issues getting it up and runing as well. took me downloading it a couple times and probably flashing it 4 times. Not sure what was going on. rather than ODIN, I would do a battery pull, hold VOL+ and power and force it into recovery and reflashed. a few times...
Thanks for the replies guys. I used Odin because my external SD is full..I need to buy a bigger one.. anyway I'll download a new copy while I'm getting ready for work and try flashing it on the way.

Awesome. thanks!
for those who are like me and haven't felt the need to root their phone or use a custom recovery, the process below worked to update an unlocked, un-rooted, stock AT&T moto x. this is probably available elswhere on the forms too.
- copy the zip into "download" on the internal storage
- boot into bootloader by holding volume down and power together
- at the bootloader screen, use volume down and scroll to "recovery", then press volume up to select it
- in recovery mode you will see "no command". hold volume up and press power to show the recovery menu
- use volume down to go to "apply update from sdcard" then press power to enter
- you should be at "choose a package to install", use the volume buttons to highlight "download/" and press power
- use the volume buttons to highlight the zip and press power
the update will start. it took about 5 minutes on my device. when it finishes, use volume keys to select "restart system" and press power. device will restart and you're done.
for unlocked bootloader we'd have to delete superuser to install this, correct?

No, you don't need to uninstall superuser. If you use xposed, make sure you uninstall the framework (no need to uninstall the modules).

I tied to flash via recovery, but the verification check didn't complete. the email.apk didn't match. I removed it when I updated to 4.4.
I flashed down to 4.2.2 from 4.4 and rerunning slap my moto because I am rooted, but no su binary. lol
For those who had issues taking the OTA. You have 2 options that I see.
Removing the verification lines from the updater script. Don't know if that will work or what it will do.
or
Reflashing to 4.2.2 via RSD Lite. The write protection is still 0. using slapmymoto again and updating via OTA to 4.4. You will lose all data. I used to titanium back up and stored my stuff to the my box drive.
I am installing 4.4.2 via recovery from the OTA i downloaded this morning and I don't have that stupid email.apk issue. The system update says i am up to date so I had to do this way.

Excuse my not knowing, but I just came to the forums here to peek around and see about this, since I'm on AT&T. If I uninstall the framework and take the update, what do I have to do to enable xposed after the update? Do I have to reinstall the framework every reboot?

Additionally, you also want to ensure that your /system is not write protected. If your bootloader is not unlocked, /system partition will most likely be write protected, so XPosed will not work until you do a soft-reboot (from the installer app) every time you restart your phone.
I just figured that out hahaha

S7/US Variant, working root apps and programs.

Discuss working apps and programs that require root for any of the US Variant S7 and S7 edge phones here!

Does anyone know if layers can work on the stock firmware on the s7 edge like it did for the lgg4? Also I got exposed working, and fixed the boot loop after flashing engboot. No lag either!

You can disabled the boot loop and heating up by factory resetting your phone after flashing the engboot, once this is done do the entire initial setup but when prompt with hands free activation hold the back button. Go to the play store and download package Disabler Samsung. Now go to settings and activate device, when finished do not hit "done" instead hit the home button. Go to package Disabler and search DM services, disable it and wala! Enjoy!

Yes it's real easy and if you need help just ask here, that's why I made the thread. ?

So I have the 930T ,I flashed the Engboot then phone restarted. After the start up process I went to push supersu via adb, it went through the the whole process and success. The phone rebooted automatically and after it booted I could see the supersu app. Root checker says root not installed correctly and also titanium back up won't detect root. I have downloaded and pushed the files a total of 6 times. I have also wiped cache before the last push, still no root. Any ideas?
Did you try to reflash su
Sent from my SM-G935P using XDA-Developers mobile app
Yes 7 times now.this last time I reflashed the Engboot and did the whole process. Same result.

It's definitely tricky but this works. I've done it to mine 3 times to get everything right. I'm on pd8 by the way.
Here is how I got everything working smooth.
Make sure you have the modified Odin from the original AT&T thread.
Take out the Sim and memory card if you have one. These have caused issues in the past.
Factory reset in recovery. Then boot into download mode. Flash via Odin the 930t pd8 firmware or whatever version you have (from sammobile, 2hr download with a free account) make sure. To use the "Home" csc file. Again we are flashing all the fields.
Now your stock.
Boot up and setup your phone. Still no Sim or memory card. Install kernel auditor, titanium back up and busy box.
Turn on adb mode via developer mode.
ADB reboot download mode.
Flash everything again but this time using " Samsung_G930x_QC_Rooted_boot.zip" in the AP field in Odin.
It will reboot, then once abd is able to see your device. Run the root.bat.
It will reboot after a time.
Once it's back. Install busybox to system/bin, it won't install to xbin.
Use kernel auditor to change cpu governor to "ondemand".
Use titanium back up to freeze "security log agent"
You should be golden.

It's fairly easy, just download flashfire to your device and go to. http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-xposed-samsung-lollipop-t3180960 and click the download OK your phones browser. The website is for the international variant using exonos but it works the same.

How is the lag? Did you notice any performance loss? I followed the steps in the original thread and had to factory reset after being stuck on the Tmo screen (Huge over site on Tmo to add a white splash screen on an AMOLED screen...). After I flashed SU, superSU would lag like crazy. It would take 2 mins for root requests to popup. I never felt so happy to odin back to stock after that. I didnt think of flashing all odin files and just replacing the AP slot. Maybe that will make a difference?

I had the same problem all is good now just let your phone rest so it can learn battery usage and download no frills cpu or any goody kernel tweaker and change govn. To interactive this will help lag. You just have to let phone sit it will fix itself.
