Handwriting ---> Text - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What are the limitations with this, if any?
I mean when it comes to handwriting on the Note3/4, not taking photos of exiting handwriting & manipulating/converting that.*
Is it VERY accurate, no matter how bad your handwriting is?
I've always wanted this capability, looking forward to testing it on my Note 4!
*although I'd love to hear all about that too if folks can elaborate

Try it at your nearest BestBuy if it's available. It shocked me in its accuracy. I don't have neat hand writing, and worse cursive - and it was 100% accurate over 8-10 sentences that I tried.

I don't live in the US... As far as I'm aware it's not available in Australia *PERIOD*, definitely not in my city.
Availability was originally the 17th, but apparently that was wrong & it won't be till the 29th at the earliest.
Was hoping to hear from folks who have the Note 4, or at least have the Note 3 & can go into some more detail.
TY.

Anyone else? TY.

Depends.. of course if your handwriting IS really bad, i guess it won't. You need to be able to make the letters be understood a minimum. I know i have a really bad handwriting... and some times it won't. but as posted above.. you need to try that for yourself.

Yes, that addresses this (which was already addressed in the last response):
Is it VERY accurate, no matter how bad your handwriting is?
But hoping someone can elaborate some more on this...
What are the limitations/quirks with it, if any?
I mean when it comes to handwriting & handwriting -> text on the Note3/4, not taking photos & manipulating/converting that.
Although I'd love to hear all about that too if folks can elaborate.

Well, l'll try to answer a little bit. I currently replying with note 8 using handwriting. It's pretty accurate, unless your handwriting is really that bad. I mean if you write "a" like "o" or "e" like "c". But you must becareful, because if you write like me, it's little bit hard if you want to write just a letter capital i (I), small L (l), or 1. Because I usually messing with those 3.

Thank-you kind sir, that's the kind of RWE feedback I'm looking for, keep em coming please folks.

It is very accurate and with good recognition. With updates recognition could get even better.

I tried Resco Recorder, simply put, does not work.
I tried Vito Audio Notes, its also not working.
Any news on this? I am desperately in need of this to record argue converstation with gf because she likes to turn things around.
No possibility of recording calls on HTC devices simply because of legal issues they wanted to restrict it by making the drivers route the calls not through the OS and that's the main reason for not able to have an auto-answering machine software also.
I love Symbian for this reason alone.

Get a new g/f dude but if you really think a recorder will solve the problem,it may be time to get a new you...lol. just kidding dude and good luck
I loved being able to record convos on my Treo 755p. I would be going back to it but I like GPS on the mogul too much.
Sounds like you need a saner girlfriend and not spy software
I need this for everytime sprint says "Sure are our service is the best".

Don’t worry as soon as we understand any female SHE WILL MORPH AGAIN !!
4th and 20 from your own 5........PUNT!!!
I don't think it is a legal issue as someone posted. Many states allow you to record calls as long as at least 1 member of the party is aware, some states require more than 1.
I know my last PPCPE the wizard allowed me to record calls. Recording calls is not only for spying. I used mine alot when someone was giving me a phone number and I didn't want to go through the whole crap of opening the notepad, selecting free text etc.
It just seems the Mogul overall has been a dissapointment with me. I was HTC's biggest fan when the produced the first XDA for T-Mo with a 3.5" screen
RANT...
Talking about 3.5" screens what happened to them. I've literally stopped using all office mobile apps ever since they shrunk the screen down to 2.4 Excel Mobile is a pain. Pwoerpoint is manageable and Word...Well word mobil is only realistic with a device with a keyboard. I loved using transcriber but there is so little room to write on the 2.4" screen.
Are there any rumours of any 3.5" PPCPE in the works?

I think all the 3.5's are at the end of ropes and in the water as they make great boat anchors LOL. these phones are big enough but if they could keep em small like this then that would be cool.

The only reason yu think the 3.5" were big is because you've become accustomed to the 2.4".
After the death of the handheld PC in the late '90's and bisth of the PPC. People couldn't belive that PPC's could be as small with their 4" screens. Then the 3.5" came and we were like wow, they shrunk it even more.
I personally think the reason HTC ditched the 3.5" was because PPC's had been regarded as business computers and in order to gain or expand their market niche they brought them down to the siz of cell phones.
Apple has brought the 'BIG' screen back with the iPhone. Since they seem to set fashion trends I'm hopefull.

GrandCentral
One way is to use GrandCentral. You press 4 during the call. May not work well for an angry gf though because it announces that it is being recorded. You'll also have a new phone number. I have my grandcentral line forwarded to my mogul. Lots of features. I know this probably won't work for you but it is the only think I know of for recording that works well.

Thanks for all the "trying" to help guys. I really need this because gf keep changing her mind and story. I need something to show her that.."this is what you said 5 mins ago".....I am going nuts with this. And you know that girls also like to turn story around and make it as if it is your fault. Well need to record those too to study the psychology behind it.
I really like my mogul (had it about 2 weeks now) but the fact of the matter is I can barely read the screen! I put it on largest text size, and that works for some things, but not for many others. Everyone is not 21 years old! Time for designers to realize that.

Well, you may need glasses, my friend... And no, I am not 21 either

Well it was fun while it lasted..

Have finally decided to go back to using my Storm 2, with all the great features the HD2 has, I just cannot get the hang of the damn keyboard..tried all third party ones, none were accurate for speedy one handed typing. The registry fixes seemed to work sometimes and not other times - It was driving me insane.
Typing something like..."ok mate, see you in a minute.." turned into a game of Buckaroo, or minesweep!
I will miss the great screen and super web browsing - not to mention great customisability features of the device
...but to be honest, come to think of it, thats all I will miss.
Great forum here
Really I can't understand the problem is in the device or person?
I'm replying this from my device only, typed one handed without issues and without any patch installed. It just need some time to get use to the new device.
I actually find it way easier to type in my HD2 comparing to my iPhone with t9 support.
There is some difficulty with high sensitivity, but its compensated with the t9 error correction.
Anyways, best of luck with your another device.

Stumbling along using T9 is hardly a good test of whether a keyboard is up to the task now is it? It's cheating.
The fact remains that typing on the HD2 keyboard - and I mean properly typing with no kids' correction services* - is pretty damned hard work. I have to correct almost every word and it is extremely tedious. The keyboard seems to have regular funny turns too where it becomes super-sensitive and where some of the keys, mainly backspace, adopt a mind of their own. Anyone who defends this keyboard, let alone says it's good, is surely having a laugh. I can manage it better than most, a few friends have had a go and it put them off the handset instantly. They had at first loved the screen but the keyboard soon had them turning their noses up.
*T9 and the like were invented to make multi-tap keypads more useable for the masses. I never used it then so with a full QWERTY at my disposal I'm certainly not interested. I'm a very fast typist and can bang-out whole words faster than people can using T9. I should not have to go hunting for new keyboards or using T9 workarounds on a premium device. It's just not on and I fully appreciate why the OP has ditched his handset.

A fact? Just like it's fact that ALL HD2's have hardware faults?
What you think is a fact is in fact not a fact at all but nonsense. It's one of the best software keyboards ever. Really better than the iPhone's that, if you belive the common opinion, was previously the best (I had an iPhone, I know the HD2 has a better keyboard).
Now don't tell me about threads where people complain bout the keyboard. I told you before why that would be stupid (though I'm sure you didn't get it...):

You'd also realize that this is a forum where people come when they try to get solutions - people who don't have problems usually don't tell everyone about it. Your conclusion that just because you have two faulty devices all must be faulty is total nonsense - almost all devices are perfectly fine and even more important, are of much higher quality than most other phones (*cough* iPhone *cough*)

Along comes one of those people who is 'surely having a laugh'.
I really cannot imagine a worse keyboard. I'm sorry but whatever you're comparing it to is not worthy of any accolades if the HD2 keyboard beats it into submission. You cannot seriously tell me that inputting text on this device is anything but a tedious and frustrating experience.
Again, you show that you're unable to read.
As I said (and you couldn't read) I compared to the iPhone I had (and the Touch HD). The HD2 has a much better keyboard.
If it's true that the iPhone had the best keyboard (that's what people say), then now the HD2 has the best one.
You draw the conclusion that just because YOU are not able to type on it, it's bad? You're much more of a stupid troll than I thought.

LOL. I really must stress that I'm only humouring you because I have absolutely nothing better to do apart from drink beer and argue with you. I'm holed-up in a hotel room in a strange city and it's kinda fun....to a point.
Nobody I know likes the HD2 keyboard save a handful of people on this forum. It's absolutely terrible. HTC need to sort a hotfix immediately because loads of people will return their handsets for this and this alone.
Yeah sure... nobody likes the keyboard and loads of people return their devices
Actually only stupid people return their devices because of small, easily fixable software flaws... and if they're not only stupid but also trolls and/or psychologically disturbed, they open threads to tell everyone that they've returned their devices.

I have just reviewed your entire history of posts on this forum; I am surprised that you had nothing ever to say except to bash & complain about the HD2, enflame others with your sordid commentary, and trying ever so ardently to persuade others that this is the worse phone in history, despite that we all know the opposite!
I believe that you are deliberately trying your very hardest to ruin our experience with the HD2, actively creating and perpetuating mirages of exaggerated hardware faults, causing unrest among the forum members, and continuously complaining about everything in the HD2. This is not a casual accusation, this is the result of a comprehensive review of what goes back to your first post.
Unless you are being paid for this, just sell your phone and buy an iPhone, or, roll over and die! See who cares about your mobile phone satisfaction

I'm on my second one, the first went back. Went back to my iphone. Keyboard on iphone is way more accurate. Hd2 need a major overhaul typing is very hard.
Typing on my touch hd was way better and t9 sucks. I'm giving this thing a couple more days but its not looking good.
Just so you all know in the last two years ive had and loved an x7500, a touch, a touch hd, then iphone (which i dislike very much) and now the hd2. This according to the specs was THE!!! phone i was waiting for. Software wise its just not close to the hardware spec. It needs a lot of work. especially for the price. We will see what the next few days bring.
yeah for the love of god I wish this guy would leave, its annoying to log on.and find every otherpost a bash on the HD2 by this guy... can't wait until he gets bored and moseys on!

Galaxy S is the fastest texting phone!

A British woman is feeling "GR8" after smashing the world record for typing the fastest text message, a mobile phone company said.
Melissa Thompson, 27, wrote "the razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human", in 25.94 seconds.
The official Guinness World Record is currently held by American Franklin Page, 24, who wrote the same passage in 35.54 seconds in March this year.
Ms Thompson, from Salford, Greater Manchester, was using Samsung's new Galaxy S smartphone when she shaved a huge 9.6 seconds off Mr Page's record, also achieved on a Samsung device.
The record, which remains subject to Guinness approval, was smashed by Ms Thompson using the Galaxy S's "SWYPE" key pad, which enables users to input text without their fingertip leaving the screen.
The company said it allows people to send text messages at speeds that were never before possible.
Ms Thompson, who works for an insurance company, was shopping with her boyfriend, Chris Davies, 23, when they visited a Samsung roadshow and she was invited to have a go at breaking the record.
She said: "I used to send a lot of text messages - 40 or 50-a-day to Chris alone so we both knew I could type fast.
"But since we moved in together and I started my job I haven't been texting as much and, you could say, my fingers were out of shape.
"It's a real shock to find out that I'm the fastest texter in the world. But using SWYPE helped. Everyone should give it a go and see how easy it is."

I personally don't get why so many people like Swype. i find it a huge PITA, because I am constantly correcting it. It always guesses the wrong words.

I like Swiftkey, but I get many more errors than Swype. The reason, I think, is because it's constantly trying to guess what you want, rather than what you have, so you have to pay close attention (if you use auto-accept, and IMHO there is little reason to use swiftkey without prediction and auto-accept). Sometimes, however, I'm paying attention to what I've just typed, rather than what it's suggesting. Also, I've seen it have my word that I want, but I'm in the flow and 1 letter away so I type the last letter to hit space and see that it's changed it's prediction! That's the most annoying, but whatever. So, what I try to do is use Swiftkey for texts (because it does learn, and learn well), but for my general purposes it's still not upto snuff, so I use Swype.
I want to like Swiftkey, I really, really do. I love the idea of having a sentence of 10 words approx planned out, typing the first word and only having to type 1-3 more during that process, but it's just not there for me (yet...hopefully).
You can turn down the correction popup frequency in the swype options. I'm a fan, it works fast and if you get used to it the errors become less frequent. However, it makes reading your sent texts from the night before (yes the one where you got blackout drunk) more fun
I like Swype. Good thing of it is that you can "swype" to write and/or tap the keys to write normally. Sometimes it´s very funny how good the recognition is. You even haven´t to move you finger over the right letters to get the right a word recognized.
I like swype. You really need to know what exactly you want to write and how to swipe...

I think my problem might be that I use my phone mainly not for texting, but work email. As such I want to write my emails concisely, but with proper grammar and usually longer, more technical words. Swype is always dumbing everything down and assuming I am typing gibberish. I prefer the stock Samsung keyboard, I find it very responsive and it doesn't try to guess what I want to type - I can type fast enough as it is.

Chat I had with Acer concerning 3.1 update, same old, same old...

All of this is because I'm not familiar with doing modifications myself because I'd probably mess everything up, guess I'm a lazy bastard.
Anoopa P: Hi, my name is Anoopa P. How may I help you?
Anoopa P: Hi Jack.
Jack Mabry Jr: Do you know when the 3.1 update will be rolling out for the A500 tablet?
Anoopa P: I understand your concern. I will do my best to help you.
Anoopa P: Jack, I understand that you need to know when you will receive the 3.1 update for your system.
Jack Mabry Jr: yes, that is correct, I see that other tablets have already received that update and that at least one has received the 3.2 update. I'm getting worried that Acer is not supporting the product.
Anoopa P: No need to worry Jack.
Anoopa P: Please be informed that the update processed on, in the order of the serial number.
Jack Mabry Jr: is there no way to manually update it?
Anoopa P: It is an OTA process, you will receive the alert for that.
Jack Mabry Jr: Sorry, I'm just getting a little frustrated that the process is so slow, there are some great improvements with the 3.1 update
Anoopa P: No need to worry.
Anoopa P: May I know the purchase date of your computer?
Anoopa P: 'May I know from where did you purchase computer? Is it from USA or Canada?
Jack Mabry Jr:
I bought it on July 9th at Best Buy, USA
Jack Mabry Jr: I waited to buy it until then because that was when the update was rolling out.
Anoopa P: Alright, then there will be no issue, you will receive the alert for the update soon.
Anoopa P: Please be noted that the updating process is held on in the order of the system serial number.
Jack Mabry Jr: anyway you can tell how long it will be until my serial number is reached? Have to ask that
Anoopa P: I understand your situation.
Anoopa P: Please be noted that it is done automatically through the database, so unfortunately I am not in a position to provide the exact date for that.
Anoopa P: Please be informed about my limitations.
Jack Mabry Jr: Ok, thank you for your time sir and your patience with me, I appreciate the assistance.
Anoopa P: It's my pleasure to assist a valued customer like you. I appreciate you for spending your valuable time with me.
Anoopa P: Jack, to conclude we have provided the information about the 3.1 update and this should help you fix the issue. If there are no additional questions on this topic, I will close the chat session.
We purchased an A500 last week. Purchased it when we heard about the update to 3.1 as well.
Since the roll out is taking an incredible amount of time by today's OS roll out standards, I think we will be taking the tablet back. It's a great piece of hardware overall, however, after reading this and many other forums we are not getting that warm and fuzzy feeling about current and future support from Acer which is really sad. Also, we have experienced many force closes with stock software which I would hope would be solved with 3.1 but I just don't want to lose out on the chance to return it while we still can.
I had a chance to look at the Galaxy 10.1 two days ago and was very impressed with it. Its a shame it's lacking some of the nicer hardware features of the A500. But I think that might be where we are headed next. It is much thinner and weighs a good deal less then the A500 and ships with 3.1 (I know, I know you all probably know this already.)
or...
You could simply take the time to update it yourself and have had 3.1 weeks ago.
Just an idea.
lol at op - purchased july 9th?
So you purchased the unit less then a week ago and are annoyed that people who purchased it months go are going to get updated first - but are unable/unwilling to just manually update?
No, I never said I was upset, maybe a little bummed. Glad you like to be an ass though, hope that works out for you.

On the other note... My advice is you should check out the Toshiba Thrive !!! You will definitely be happy with that one.... hardware wise... it is the best out there.... everything you need and more !!!
/ Full ports ( USB, HDMI, even full size SD card slot !! )
/ Replaceable battery & custom colors back plate !!
OP i am so sorry you got an idian call center...
the way the guy speak is sooooo pre-calculated.... I hate those kind of call center who gave pre-made answer...
Patience...
PATIENCE...
how can we judge the Whole company support quality by only seeing the bad reports....
why not posting the good one?
it's a common mistakes.... we judge only the bad side, never the good... we just blind...
do 1 000 000 000 good things in your life.... but 1 mistakes... well everyone will speak about that mistake

Was not trying to be an ass - was just trying to playfully point out that you can upgrade to stock 3.1 without having to wait on Acer.
Pardon if I came off rude. Was not intended

first of all calm down
Where did you see RACISM ?
it's a fact that the call center is in india and therefore it's an indian call center... what is wrong with you?
secondly
I expect more humanity yes not DRAMA what the hell.... nonsense.
where is the haystack ??? just a single request in the database and that will pull down the result, a matter of micro seconds... (I know what I speak about ok) but maybe and probably the level 1 does not have the tools to check out for sure. but anyway... always as always some answer not really clear, just made to waste time of users and money
third
I don't have to call my call center in bangkok, I can directly speak with someone from the ACER Care center Customer Service... no need to call... they works 7 days not 24hours but it's still good... so what else ?
last conversation I got with my care center was for summarize this
ME : Hello , I did something wrong with my tablet I updated manually because I didn't receive any OTA when I buy my tablet, then I put a custom kernel and firmware because I wanted to have more tools and more freedom, could you help me to reStock my tablet in case I want sell it to someone...
THEM: Hello, Oh no problem you come when you need to update or reset totally your tablet that will not be a problem.
ME: Oh really I can come on wich day
THEM: Saturday is the best day, not too much people and have the technician...

His terminology was 100% grammatically and idiomatically correct. When referring to something in another country whose names end in A, such as India, you would say Indian. Same for American, African, Cuban and so on.
I suggest your learn proper English usage before accusing someone of being a racist.

There you go again, good at giving lections but not at practising yourself what you are preaching.... "Whose" and not "who's" first, but then "which" would have been the correct one anyway, and then "ends with" and not "and in".
And I am not a native english speaker myself, but I do try to speak and foremost write correctly the little english, french, spanish and german that I know. Especially if I am going to be so superior as to teach others the, how did you put it again... ah yes, "proper English usage" . Aaaahhh... the irony......
beware between UK and US english a lot of differences

As I am fully aware of, yes, thank you. And still here, in this particular sentence, I have to persist. We are not talking fine subtilities, but basics.
It reminds me indeed of this new BBC Sherlock Holmes TV series, the opening scene in the Russian (or was it ukranian) prison. Delightful, and so true....

Oh well, excuuuuuse me for making a bloody typo or two whilst still half asleep. At least I didn't accuse someone of being a racist because I'm too goddam thick to unsterstand what he was saying.
Oh, and what the hell is a "lection"? Hoisted on your own petard, matey.

Now, did I call you a daft prick? No, no need to be insulting. But apparently, my little prose did finds its way to your skull now, didn't it ? Enjoy your Saturday, but if you have some time left, you might want to reflect on the way you are posting here in general.
Oh, and I forgot...http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/lection which is exactly what was meant here.

Can.
But can also be written this way : http://www.encyclo.co.uk/define/Subtility
But you get an after eight for you brilliant effort.

ETA versus ECD; what's the difference!?

ETA = Estimating Time of Arrival
ECD = Estimating Completion Date
My question is: why everyone is using ETA abbreviation for a time schedule for a task to be published?
In the business world (and as an IT Business Analysis) I think that ECD is a better representation of a time line for an assignment to be completed.
Yours opinion...?
I haven't heard ECD before I use ETA because it is more "known" (i think).
I got your point clarkkov > However, myself working in the North American market place and getting influenced by it, never heard ETA as a business context (as you mentioned), I would agree that using the dots in the abbreviation makes sense, but it kills it as an acronym.
Well, I don t know about most. But I actually was influenced by the word "E.T.A." by watching movies. WAR MOVIES. You know, when a few soilders are going in a heli the commander says "E.T.A. 2 minutes" etc etc. Well, the word E.T.A. is actually very well used in that context I think.
I loled at the discussions any way never heard of "ECD" or E.C.D (clarkov) what do the dots matter its THE internet. We can write it how we want ECD, e.C. And the D, it doesnt matter. Thank you for your attention

LOLzzzzzzz.... nice discussion out there..
ok. coming back to the point. IMO, i think most people would know ETA/E.T.A.
ECD/E.C.D??? I only saw it here. no offense.
I came to know the meaning (or close to the meaning) even before knowing the abbreviation of ETA.
