[Q] Screen on time? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All of you who are using not rooted stock Nexus 4,how is your battery life? What's the average screen on time that you get?Mine lasts about 3hrs+
and i wonder if this is an okay time for a stock kernel.

that is ok. screen on time will differ for everyone as everyone uses their devices differently, and set up differently. battery life is dependent on how you personally use the device, how you set it up, what apps you use, and very much the quality of your phone/data signal.kernels dont give you extra battery life, no matter how often you read that or how much someone else claims.

All right, but still I've seen people who can squeeze out up to 5 hrs of screen on time. However still depending on the aforementioned factors how is this possible?

i see around 5 hours sot. my signal and data quality are fabulous(nyc), lots of years of practicing setting up properly, and years of not using crappy apps, like facebook. and i keep my brightness around 20%.

Battery Life Declining

Hi guys,
So bought the Verizon Galaxy S5 for my fiance when it came out. Over the past week or two it's been dying rather quickly. Attached are some battery metrics I took from the screenshot. Do they look normal to you?
It looks like the android system is using up all the battery, but I'm not sure why this is.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Mike
It seems your Gps is on.
Keep GPS off.(Location).
This will help you to boost your battery.
this is perfectly normal. having 35% after 8 hours is actually average

Do you remember what the screen time was from those screenshots? Android OS at 60% seems really high

You have unrealistic expectations. Using two thirds of the charge over 8 hours is not atypical. Why do you believe otherwise?
You can do various tweaks to gain a few hours e.g. GPS always off, short screen time outs, perhaps install some inverted apps (black themed screens use considerably less battery), et cetera. Or perhaps invest in an extended capacity battery. Or some people feel that it is easier to carry a spare battery.
.
.
What is everyone on in this thread?! 8 hours is nothing and unless you have been gaming non stop, which seems doubtful considering the display being almost non existent in the log, you should normally get at least 24-48 hours with about 3-5 hours of screen time. Something is wrong with either the software or the battery, but normally it is a software problem, BBS is your friend.

You sir, are a troll until proven otherwise. You are simply wrong, perhaps the reason why all of the other posts disagree with you. 24+ hours is not normal. The only way anyone would get that kind of duration is to have the phone off most of the time and most people do not use their phones that way. The OP had 8.6 hours at @ 32% remaining, a wholly normal result.
Certainly battery life varies widely depending on GPS & wifi use, gaming, screen time and so forth. But to claim that 24+ hours is normal is egregiously specious.

Wow wow, hold your horses, you are being serious? It is completely normal for me with my 900F model and a lot of people are getting it. 24/48 hours is my typical battery with phone on (the battery obviously doesn't count power off, so that is a moot point anyways). I happened to make a SS last month and will share it for you to see and I didn't even try to save the battery, I never do since the battery of the S5 is so exceptional!
I agree, it does not look normal. Something is probably holding wake locks or working the CPU. There's a lot of badly written apps out there, including some of the most popular. I've seen FB messenger and Slacker radio apps use 2-6% CPU in the background for no good reason, consistently until force closed.
In any case, try to install an app that can read wakelocks, like BetterBatteryStats or GSAM. Also check the tasks screen in Android Tuner to see if something is keeping the CPU busy in the background for no reason.
Once you figure out the abnormal drain, try installing my app, LeanDroid to extend your battery even more

There's many ways, learn to tweak your kernel, a good place to start is HERE - Lower screen birghtness, have a decent signal. If you're using your phone flat out it'll rinse your battery.
You got over 4hrs SOT in 12hrs from the average time on calculator, and 3 hrs real time more or less, that's actually not that bad, it's average-decent battery.
There's so many ways, you have to learn how your phone works really, it's all trial and error. There isn't a simple "get better battery" method.
Thanks for the input if my battery life is average then i wont worry about it anymore its just that i read a lot of users that can have 6 to 7 hours of screen time i thought my phone is defective

6-7 hours is achieved by pretty much using the device for nothing and disabling everything. People who have silly SOT's by putting the device in Airplane mode and having brightness on super low, and not using any app.
AOSP ROMs can have better battery life due to not not sucking up as many resources as a Samsung ROM. But again, you can tweak your kernel settings to suit your needs.

Thank you so much you have been very helpful, if i change my rom to AOSP how much more screentime will i get? Just an estimate is enough
Depending on the kernel you use, plus the ROM I guess 4-6 hours is achievable.

How about my case? I have 6 apps installed and on CM11 nightly, and only getting 3 hours SOT from 100% to 0%.
It's really all down to the kernel and the tweaking of it. CM stock kernel was never great for me either, use a custom one.

I had a Sony Xperia Z3+ and when it was pure stock I would get 3-4 hours but that was with a disadvantage, I had to tailer myself to not game or use it heavily as it had the notorious SD810 and would easily hit 80°c while browsing and playing simple games. When a kernel came out SOT didn't improve much just user ex and heat. So yeah this 3T tops it in all my main areas sound, camera and can use it however I feel. :highfive:
First charge.

I haven't done anything, using dark theme's where possible but other than that it's just my daily usage but constantly. Today been using it on YouTube, Tidal streaming, browsing and playing pinout. Sitting at 25% 6H 48M SoT. I f**king love this phone. Just wait till I root and get the tweaks back on
Did you even use your phone? I bet you just enabled so the screen doesnt turn off and placed it on desk.. Thats unfair if you did that as the cpu is running on low mhz all the time
Some people get good battery on every device and some people always get bad battery. I always get great battery on all my phones and this one is no exception. I've hit 10, 11, and 12 hours screen on time and have not done anything to save battery.

People do a lot of stuff here just to get likes xD
I get 7-8 hours sot, using my 3T as any other phone.
I used to get aswell 7-8h on the Oneplus One, constantly on WiFi (with LTE it was worse, 5h SoT). Mainly using chrome, tapatalk, flipboard. (no games).
Now on the 3T its pretty the same (7-8h SoT on WiFi).
ofc games will drain it alot more. its depending on usage.
you also get different results when ure on Enterprise WiFis (high dtim interval, authentication system, etc.), then your WiFi could consume much(!) more battery.
at my work, even 4G takes less power than WiFi. While at home, wifi takes nearly nothing (8h idle on wifi = 1-2% max. drain)

Pretty good battery here. Getting 7 hrs most times although my s7 edge exynos would give me somewhere from 5 hrs to 6.5 hrs sot, O3T SOT is amazing.

You should check your deep sleep percentagebif you are having a battery problems. Cause most of the time the s10 exynos does enter into deep sleep even while idle.
I easily get 10h+ Sot at 1440p.
I remember reading that running at fullhd+ will only give you about 30 min of extra battery life a day, I think the health of your eyes is more important, higher definition reduces eye strain and it definitely looks way better when gaming.
10 hours?
How do you manage that? I thought I was doing good with 7 or so. I have it WQHD with brightness set to just below the warning mark.
Anyways, the way I see it, if the resolution is there, I'm gonna use it. No point in having it not to use it. As long as my battery gets me through the day, which it has done easily since I got, with heavy use as well, then I'm happy.

I have very strict app management habits and whenever anything goes out of order it gets uninstalled forever.
The "worst" screenshot was taken at 17%, half the time on LTE and max brightness, the best was during a more relaxing day and ended at 3%
I'm going another full battery run today, 2h Sot and still at 88% battery so far, this time I uninstalled Nova and Sesame to see how OneUI Home stands against them.

I was thinking about making one completely dedicated to this device, no generic android crap, there is a lot of potential.

There's negligable battery difference between FHD and WQHD+. But there is definitely a difference in visual quality. You should definitely use WQHD+.
As for those who are saying they get x hours SOT. You can't compare with others. It's different for everyone. It depends on a massive number of factors. How good a cell reception you get, brightness, what you have enabled (wifi, bluetooth, NFC etc), AOD, what apps are running, what apps you use, what you use the phone for during the day, was the phone used for long period or intermittent use.
It's silly to ry to compare or match others. Just be happy with your own use, otherwise you'll spend more time trying to get more SOT, than you will just actually using and enjoying the phone.

I guess that depends on the quality of your connection. If your reception is not very good at home your radio might be really busy getting a proper signal.

Battery Test

Hi,
I'd like to know if there is a way to test my pixel 4 battery, is it just bad or is it faulty?
I've just dropped my beloved Pixel 2 and got an upgrade to the 4. Upon receiving the Pixel 4 the battery was almost dead, something I've found uncommon in recent years. Normally new phones last 24hrs+ but this phone needs 2 charges a day, the same as my 2.5yo Pixel 2. I also notice it gets quite a bit hotter than my pixel 2 used to.
Is there a test available so I can determine if the battery is faulty? The operator said I can return it for an exchange but don't want to go through the bother if the Pixel 4 battery life is just bad.
Thanks,
Bradley

Hey Bradley, the issue here is that while you are giving an accurate question the circumstances described by yourself are a bit vague. The Pixel 4 is ok to make thru the entire day provided you are not into gaming. Plus if you are having a dark mode and the same goes for Chrome. The SOT was, is and ever will be an individual thingie no matter what everyone say. The battery has been quite a matter especially because of reviewers. I am not saying they are wrong. But if a phone can handle 15 % or 30 % by night it matters not, at least to me. I have never experienced any heating issue. Does that get warm? Yes, again when gaming. But I didn't notice it differs too much compared to the others. The Pixel 4 is no way a marathon runner but for a day it can go pretty well. You can download Better Battery Stats or any alikes to see what processes are the ones demanding the most. If there's no bad ass I would strongly consider getting a replacement.

I use custom kernel, forcedoze, etc. to last more than 24 hours when idle. Naturally, it consumes faster when I keep operating it.
