[Q] Samsung Note 3 Root Help (UK) - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I've had this note 3 for a year now and it's waranty has finally expired. That means it's time to root!
I've never rooted a device before and to be honest I'm VERY paranoid about bricking it because it's my baby!
I've been following the ChainFire thread and install video by TK Here
I've got the MD5 file and Odin3 installed. I've booted the phone into "download mode".
The trouble I'm having is that my computer can't find a driver for the device in this mode, it shows as it's snapdragon processor / mobo "MSM8960"
After looking about for quite a while, I've realized there are A LOT of variables when it comes to rooting your phone.
Can an experienced rooter please reply to let me know if I should be OK rooting my device. Info below.
Model number: SM-N9005
Android Version: 4.4.2
Baseband Version: N9005XXUGNG1
Build Number: KOT49H.N9005XXUGNG1
Kernel Version: 3.4.0 - 1955971
Thank you for reading.

Shameless Self Bump.
Just looking for a yes or no here anyone who has good rooting history

Hiya, first of all you need drivers, go to this site:
http://androidxda.com/download-samsung-usb-drivers
Download the drivers for the note 3, I'm assuming you're using windows 7, install the drivers &reboot your computer, then connect your phone in normal mode, not download mode. Once you've verified the phone is recognised as the note 3 disconnect the phone &reboot into download mode, leave for a few seconds &connect the phone to the pc, the drivers should install for download mode. Verify on the pc that the phones recognised, (under device manager there shouldn't be an exclamation mark anywhere really) One that's done you're good to go.
An alternative method to root is using an app called towel root. It's a new way to root using an exploit &shouldn't trip knox. Read up on it very carefully though, I think some ppl are having issues with it with the note 3.
See how you get on with all that lol.

- Regarding the device's info, you can use Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app for more detailed info.
- As for rooting, you can use any method to root. I personally use CF-Auto-root. Some notes: Install driver. Set USB Debug ON. Set Reactivation Lock OFF. Recommend flashing CWM Recovery immediately after rooting.
- You can get the driver here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25370185/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_v1.5.27.0.exe
Or you can install Kies so that the driver also be installed.

Thanks dude. I'll have a look at that link you posted for drivers.
But I think I'll avoid the Towel method for now if people are having trouble, already paranoid enough about bricking it!

Thanks for the help, I'm planning on using the CF auto root myself, I've not tried to install the drivers through Kies because I wasn't sure if it would try to auto update my firmware to some unrootable version. I guess it doesn't so I'll have a look at that
Sorry I'm like new as of today to rooting, I've done iPhone jailbreaks but psssh, they're nothing.
whats the CWM Recovery?
Thanks

Dont worry, Kies will not auto update without asking you. Anyway you can use the driver in the link I've given above.
Recovery is the special partition where you can backup/restore all phone firmware/data... Phone comes with the stock recovery, however its function is very limited, and you may want to use custom recovery. There are some custom recoveries available: CWM or TWRP... I personally use CWM. You can google 'CWM or TWRP recovery' for the download link.

OK vndnguyen I've used the exe you linked for the drivers.
Gonna boot phone into download now and see how it goes. I'll let you know :fingers-crossed:

Worked a charm, thanks for your help!
whole process took about 15 seconds, don't know why I was so worried about it bricking
Going to have a look at that CWM now and enjoy the freedom!
Thanks!

Rooting never actually bricks your phone. But flashing ROMs does. Its not hard if you have proper instructions to do it. So just be careful while flashing or messing with your phone. Anyways congrats and best of luck :good::victory:

Can't get root trying all known metheds

I've tried with Kingo and Vroot and that was a no go so I tried Root de la Vega and that did not work. It would start downloading onto the phone and then about 30 seconds in I would keep getting a secure check fail (cache) what does that mean and how can i get around it. Every time that happens it soft bricks and I would have to Odin back to stock. I just bought my phone on Friday the 28th of March. Is is possible that they have patched that way of rooting in later phones like mine.??
Even though Kingo says its not successful, check your apps for superuser and then use a root checker. It told me it failed until I unplugged it. And root checker said that I was rooted. Halfway through the process make sure you accept the app for a camera. Dan
I used this method and it worked 1st try

I tried the latest version from the site and that did not work...
You need to do the following:
1. Load the latest driver from samsung for your phone... The Mobile Drivers...
2. Make sure you restart your computer after drivers install
3. Then plug in your N3 and let windows do its stuff and you may need to restart again after its done installing
4. Make sure you are in debug mode and unknown sources is checked
5. Then you need to download this file (older ver of kingo) (THANKS to BluPhant)
6. This is what worked for me and now i have a rooted phone...
Also thanks to bajasur for the BAJA ROM and Support....

[Q] Note 3 Manual Re-Root - no SU binary installed

I rooted my device with Kingo Android root. I am currently running android OS 4.3.
Everything was going just fine until just today when opened SuperSU and it told me that there is no SU binary installed. SuperSU cannot install it.
Pretty much I need to manually re-root my device.
I am not aware of any recovery files that I may have. To clarify, I have never backed up my device in any way. I have only had it for a month, and there is hardly anything on it. I figured, why bother? Well now I know.
I have done quite a few google searches about this, and I can not find any help.
What is my best course of action?
Thank you very much.
Try reflash and re-root with cf-auto root through Odin. A a small question: u still have root right to install some app such root explorer and titanium backup?

Unfortunatly, I no longer have root. None of my root apps can get root permissions because the SU binary is missing.
I tried flashing my firmware, but now my phone is stuck in an unusable state. The official firmware leaves me unable to boot with a "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
When I flash a different ROM on top of that one, all my spen stuff is messed up.
This is way different from jailbreaking. There are so many rom files I have a hard time finding the one I need.

You need to go on sammobile and download your stock firmware (you probably want to stay on 4.3 unless your particular phone and carrier have root capabilities on 4.4.2 which verizon and att do not yet have) then flash it through odin... just search your model # through sammobile and it will show all the available stock firmwares. That will at least get you running again then u will have to root it again from there
Posted from my beast of a VZW Note 3!!
I downloaded the firmware from that site and have tried to flash it.
I get an Error Meassage:
SW REV CHECK FAIL : [sb1]Fused 2 > Binary 1

Updating SuperSU is what cause this mess, I believe. It's too late for that now anyhow, because my phone does not boot.
I have the SM-900A. There is no cf-autoroot for it. Not that I canfind at least.

[Q] ReRooting My Phone?

Hey guys,
Quite awhile ago I rooted my phone and installed a custom ROM. Unfortunately, I'm a bit sketchy on the details as it was awhile ago and I don't really remember what I did. Since that time it has undergone a Samsung update and I fear that it is no longer rooted. I am wondering how I should proceed as my firmware doesn't match the compatible firmware options listed under the rooting options and I don't want to just start doing things without being sure I won't brick my phone.
Pertinent details:
Model: SAMSUNG-SGH-I337
Android Version: 4.4.2
Baseband Version: I337UCUFNC1
Build Number: KOT49H.I337UCUFNC1
SuperUser was installed and running, but when I went to update it via F-Droid I had to uninstall and the new version of SU fails to update the SU binary on "recovery install."
Basically all I want is to enable tethering (I have AT&T unlimited).
Anyone have any clue what I'm talking about and able to help??
Thanks in advance!

Awesome.. for some reason I couldn't download it directly onto my device (kept saying downloading "unknown") as it would just sit there and not download anything. Just had to transfer the apk over to my phone. Thanks again.

If that does not work, you can try to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52167774&postcount=3
It's how I rooted mine, and how I continue to do it if I completely screw up and have to go back to complete stock. It is a bit more involved than the towelroot method, but if you follow directions completely it will work.

In order to Root a phone, you should be unrooted.
Don't be afraid of the technical terms. If you've jailbroken iPoops, then you should be able to Root an Android no problem!
FOLLOW THIS THREAD STEP BY STEP.....AND THIS THREAD HERE. If you have a question about a specific step, feel free to ask. Between the two threads, you should be able to figure it out.

I find these instructions a little easier to follow. Skip down to the notes #4 for unrooted phones. The one step left off is you need busybox installed on your phone before safestrap will install. Search for it on play store. Like was mentioned, ask questions if you get stuck.

Also is there anyway I download the original stock OS that way if something goes wrong I just flash it back into my phone?

No. That file is the first step. It is installed via Odin.
Have you ever hooked your phone up to the PC before? In otherwards, have you installed the USB drivers yet? If not, your PC will not even recognize your phone. Download this to your computer and install it.

Problem rooting SM-N910 F with CF Auto Root

I am trying to root my SM-N910F using CF Auto Root but when the phone reboots, I noticed that

wrong or that I missed to cause this issue?

Wasn't it much easier if you install TWRP first, then root it using magisk?
Thank you for thatsuggestion. I didnt know that I can install TWRP before rooting the phone first
I had trouble rooting with CF auto root on my SM-N910F, not exactly the same problem as you.
Then I did some reading into other root alternatives and basically found out that SuperSU, which CF autoroot uses, was sold to a Chinese company called Coding Code Mobile Technlogy sometime around 2015. As it's closed source and Chinese firms particularly have been known not to respect user privacy, I would go with Magisk instead as it's open source, plus I have had zero problems with it so far.
Thank you so much for your help. I am not an expert with the rooting, but done a Note 4 Verizon before and it wasnt easy.
Now I got the 910F and I want to make sure I dont brick it. Can you tell me where I can find exact instructions? I already
downloaded twrp-3.3.1-0-trlte.img is that the correct version for my 910F ?

I'm no expert myself, in fact I'm new to it! but I'll share with you what I know.
I basically flashed TWRP to the phone using Samsung Odin (Loads of videos Youtube showing the process) Then I used Android Debug Bridge to push the Magisk flashable .zip file over to the phone (I think I could have actually just copied it into /sdcard - Androids name for internal storage bizarrely - through windows just like any other external device) before booting into TWRP on the phone, and simply selecting "install", selecting the Magisk .zip and flashing it from there. Then I just booted into Android and I seem to remember either the Magisk manager app will now be in your app draw, or alternatively there is an app placeholder there which allows you to download the full manager app, I can't remember which it is but small difference. Here is a link to the official Magisk thread on XDA which you can use find the download links you need. Take note that right at the top it states...
"Magisk does NOT have a website. Do NOT download Magisk from unofficial sites"
When I did it I downloaded Magisk from one of the top websites that appears when you search "Magisk" in Duckduckgo (they look very official) however after I read the notice above in the official thread I wiped the phone and did the process over again just to be safe! I hope that is helpful. :good:

did you remove battery after the flash?
Thanks for your help. Yes I tried that after the 2nd attempt when I set Odin not to auto reboot, I removed the battery
and then booted the phone after inserting the battery with the same result, not root. I am wondering why it says
boot image not found, aborting....... since I loaded the CF Auto Root which should be the correct boot image
