[Q] ReRooting My Phone? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey guys,
Quite awhile ago I rooted my phone and installed a custom ROM. Unfortunately, I'm a bit sketchy on the details as it was awhile ago and I don't really remember what I did. Since that time it has undergone a Samsung update and I fear that it is no longer rooted. I am wondering how I should proceed as my firmware doesn't match the compatible firmware options listed under the rooting options and I don't want to just start doing things without being sure I won't brick my phone.
Pertinent details:
Model: SAMSUNG-SGH-I337
Android Version: 4.4.2
Baseband Version: I337UCUFNC1
Build Number: KOT49H.I337UCUFNC1
SuperUser was installed and running, but when I went to update it via F-Droid I had to uninstall and the new version of SU fails to update the SU binary on "recovery install."
Basically all I want is to enable tethering (I have AT&T unlimited).
Anyone have any clue what I'm talking about and able to help??
Thanks in advance!

Awesome.. for some reason I couldn't download it directly onto my device (kept saying downloading "unknown") as it would just sit there and not download anything. Just had to transfer the apk over to my phone. Thanks again.

If that does not work, you can try to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52167774&postcount=3
It's how I rooted mine, and how I continue to do it if I completely screw up and have to go back to complete stock. It is a bit more involved than the towelroot method, but if you follow directions completely it will work.

[Q] Note 3 Manual Re-Root - no SU binary installed

I rooted my device with Kingo Android root. I am currently running android OS 4.3.
Everything was going just fine until just today when opened SuperSU and it told me that there is no SU binary installed. SuperSU cannot install it.
Pretty much I need to manually re-root my device.
I am not aware of any recovery files that I may have. To clarify, I have never backed up my device in any way. I have only had it for a month, and there is hardly anything on it. I figured, why bother? Well now I know.
I have done quite a few google searches about this, and I can not find any help.
What is my best course of action?
Thank you very much.
Try reflash and re-root with cf-auto root through Odin. A a small question: u still have root right to install some app such root explorer and titanium backup?

Unfortunatly, I no longer have root. None of my root apps can get root permissions because the SU binary is missing.
I tried flashing my firmware, but now my phone is stuck in an unusable state. The official firmware leaves me unable to boot with a "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
When I flash a different ROM on top of that one, all my spen stuff is messed up.
This is way different from jailbreaking. There are so many rom files I have a hard time finding the one I need.

You need to go on sammobile and download your stock firmware (you probably want to stay on 4.3 unless your particular phone and carrier have root capabilities on 4.4.2 which verizon and att do not yet have) then flash it through odin... just search your model # through sammobile and it will show all the available stock firmwares. That will at least get you running again then u will have to root it again from there
Posted from my beast of a VZW Note 3!!
I downloaded the firmware from that site and have tried to flash it.
I get an Error Meassage:
SW REV CHECK FAIL : [sb1]Fused 2 > Binary 1

Updating SuperSU is what cause this mess, I believe. It's too late for that now anyhow, because my phone does not boot.
I have the SM-900A. There is no cf-autoroot for it. Not that I canfind at least.

[Q] Samsung Note 3 Root Help (UK)

Hi guys,
I've had this note 3 for a year now and it's waranty has finally expired. That means it's time to root!
I've never rooted a device before and to be honest I'm VERY paranoid about bricking it because it's my baby!
I've been following the ChainFire thread and install video by TK Here
I've got the MD5 file and Odin3 installed. I've booted the phone into "download mode".
The trouble I'm having is that my computer can't find a driver for the device in this mode, it shows as it's snapdragon processor / mobo "MSM8960"
After looking about for quite a while, I've realized there are A LOT of variables when it comes to rooting your phone.
Can an experienced rooter please reply to let me know if I should be OK rooting my device. Info below.
Model number: SM-N9005
Android Version: 4.4.2
Baseband Version: N9005XXUGNG1
Build Number: KOT49H.N9005XXUGNG1
Kernel Version: 3.4.0 - 1955971
Thank you for reading.

Shameless Self Bump.
Just looking for a yes or no here anyone who has good rooting history
Hiya, first of all you need drivers, go to this site:
http://androidxda.com/download-samsung-usb-drivers
Download the drivers for the note 3, I'm assuming you're using windows 7, install the drivers &reboot your computer, then connect your phone in normal mode, not download mode. Once you've verified the phone is recognised as the note 3 disconnect the phone &reboot into download mode, leave for a few seconds &connect the phone to the pc, the drivers should install for download mode. Verify on the pc that the phones recognised, (under device manager there shouldn't be an exclamation mark anywhere really) One that's done you're good to go.
An alternative method to root is using an app called towel root. It's a new way to root using an exploit &shouldn't trip knox. Read up on it very carefully though, I think some ppl are having issues with it with the note 3.
See how you get on with all that lol.

- Regarding the device's info, you can use Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app for more detailed info.
- As for rooting, you can use any method to root. I personally use CF-Auto-root. Some notes: Install driver. Set USB Debug ON. Set Reactivation Lock OFF. Recommend flashing CWM Recovery immediately after rooting.
- You can get the driver here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25370185/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_v1.5.27.0.exe
Or you can install Kies so that the driver also be installed.

But I think I'll avoid the Towel method for now if people are having trouble, already paranoid enough about bricking it!

Thanks for the help, I'm planning on using the CF auto root myself, I've not tried to install the drivers through Kies because I wasn't sure if it would try to auto update my firmware to some unrootable version. I guess it doesn't so I'll have a look at that
Sorry I'm like new as of today to rooting, I've done iPhone jailbreaks but psssh, they're nothing.
whats the CWM Recovery?
Thanks

Dont worry, Kies will not auto update without asking you. Anyway you can use the driver in the link I've given above.
Recovery is the special partition where you can backup/restore all phone firmware/data... Phone comes with the stock recovery, however its function is very limited, and you may want to use custom recovery. There are some custom recoveries available: CWM or TWRP... I personally use CWM. You can google 'CWM or TWRP recovery' for the download link.

whole process took about 15 seconds, don't know why I was so worried about it bricking
Going to have a look at that CWM now and enjoy the freedom!

Rooting never actually bricks your phone. But flashing ROMs does. Its not hard if you have proper instructions to do it. So just be careful while flashing or messing with your phone. Anyways congrats and best of luck :good::victory:

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S4 AT&T root for I337UCUGOC3

I'm looking to root my s4, I just upgraded to lollipop and love it but there are some things I would like to do that require root. Hoping that someone can walk me through the process. Thanks in advance
Interested in this as well. Just need a point in the right direction. Thanks
I may be incorrect, but at the moment root for I337UCUGOC3 is only available via Flashfire.

No. You have to downgrade to 4.4.2 first, root, then flash up to 5.0

Bumping an older thread.
I've been searching around the forums for a guide to downgrade and a link to the Stock 4.4.2 ROM. AT&T Upgrade happened inadvertently. I either wasn't paying attention or it happened automatically.
Found plenty of post saying the same thing but no trustworthy guide on how to downgrade effectively from 5.0.1 on the i337 to 4.4.2. Normally I'd be up for experimenting but a newborn has me a little sleep deprived and looking for an idiot guide.
TIA

Are you trying to get back to 4.4.2 then attempt to upgrade too 5.0.1 root?
Yes, but it sounds like from the tone of that question that I might be screwed.
You can flash back to nb1, root with towelroot, and go to lollipop with the keeproot method. Look in the general forum for [GUIDE]Odin to Stock, Updating, Rooting, and Installing Safestrap by guut13 and [How-To] Update to I337_OC3 - 5.0.1 and KeepRoot (4/7/2015) by muniz_ri.

I also have a I337UCUGOC3 running 5.0.1.
Unfortunately yesterday my phone got messed up (I'll spare you all the details) and I had to do a factory reset. I am really unhappy about this because I wasn't able to backup properly with Titanium Backup since I'm not rooted. As a result, I now need to spend a bunch of hours getting my phone back to the way I like it. I am honestly not interested in flashing custom ROMs. I simply want to root so I can run Titanium Backup.
Based on your experience, how long might it typically take for a root guide to come out for this model? I'm trying to decide whether I should try to wait it out with my phone feeling "unfamiliar" to me - or if I should just go ahead and give up the idea of rooting / backing up.
Also, is there one site or forum (this thread???) where I would be able to find out how to root this model when it comes out? If so, where?
I would very much appreciate your advice!

There is no way to root on OC3 at the moment. No clue on how long it'll take if a method even gets found. I recommend downgrading to NB1 using Odin then following the steps on herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3075814
. All downgrade file are on there too. Read through all steps and warning to prevent any problems

FWIW my wife noted the user interface on her S4 suddenly completely changed. Looking at it when I got a chance I saw it was 5.0.1 (OC3). I actually don't know what it was previously. So AT&T is definitely pushing out the update.
Already on 5.0.1
I bought this ATT phone used, unlocked, and already on 5.0.1. We use it on the GoSmart Mobile network (owned/operated by T-Mobile). Today (a few weeks after the purchase), I get this message saying that there's an ATT software update available. How can ATT push an update to a phone not on their network? Will this update screw anything up? Will it re-network-lock it? I don't want to update this phone and, since it's my wife's phone, I don't want to risk a brick (I am in a similar situation with a baby and am quite sleep deprived). Previously, she had an HTC First (ATT phone use on GoSmart) and it notified us of an available update, but would not actually update (thank goodness). Do I actually have anything to worry about with this ATT update? Or is the notification just an annoyance? Thanks in advance.

The latest update, from 5.0.1, OC3 to 5.0.1 OC4 is a security update which is believed to be a response to the stagefreight bug. The update is relatively small, and should not "screw anything up." It will not affect network unlock.
As to why you're getting it on a non AT&T network, I'd guess that the update server determines the phone is an SGH-I337 and pushes the correct update for the phone.
How to root
Okay, so I have 5.0.1 with i337ucugoc3 and finally rooted it quite easily (after many failures).
I used WonderShare's MobileGo.
The process was actually very simple, but it was very confusing as to what the software actually wanted from me.
To make it easy, here's all you need:
1. Go to Settings->more->About Device
2. Tap on "Build number" seven (or more) times quicly
-- this will unlock the developer tools
3. Tap the back arrow
4. Tap "Developer options"
5. Tap on "USB debugging" to enable
6. Go to wondershare.com, download MobileGo, install
7. Run MobileGo
8. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable.
9. In MobileGo, click on the "One-Clock Root" button
You should be rooted quickly.
Not only that, it only installs SuperSU, and no malware.
10. Uninstall MobileGo if you don't want to keep it.
LoonCraz, thank you for your post. I have two questions about what you wrote:

Would this work also for i337ucugoc4?
When you say "after many failures" - were there ever any negative consequences (something broken or bricking, etc.) from one of those failures - or just not getting root?
Thanks,

I don't know, but supposedly it works very well with most versions.
None of my failed attempts left any bad effects, this program worked first shot :good:
Does the phone get wiped in the process - or does everything stay intact / in place?
The Wondershare MobileGo One-Click Root process successfully rooted my unlocked GS4 i337 (OC4) today, and confirmed by Root Checker. So easy!

WIFI not working - tried everything - very frustrated

Hi all,
I have a AT&T Galaxy S4 i337. The WIFI doesn't work. It seems to be a very common problem as there are many fixes on the internet. I have tried them all and I don't know what to do now. It is running V. 4.3 and my baseband version is i337ucugoc4.
- Rooted. Installed Rom Manager, Terminal Emulator, SuperSU, and Reverse Tether so I could use the internet (because no wifi).
- Tried to install a new modem but could not find the exact modem file. I saw a list at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2496517 but didn't know which was good for my phone. I saw I337_UCUGOC3_Modem_RockRatt.zip but it ends in a 3 not a 4 as required for my modem.
- tried to update using the AT&T Software update. It stayed at "Checking for software updates...." and then said "Software update interrupted. No updates available. Check back in 24 hours". Don't know if that would have solved the WIFI problem anyhow.
- Tried again to install to 5.0 thru USB. Downloaded and installed it but when I rebooted, it was still 4.3
- Downloaded FXR wifi and ran it - no luck there.
- downloaded the modem file ATT_OC4_modules.zip and flashed it to the phone. It said SUCCESSFUL but there was no wifi afterwards.
- Adjusted the source code with terminal emulator as I saw in a youtube video. No success and I changed it back to the original.
- Downloaded wifi manager and tried turned off-then-on wifi.
- probably more things I have forgotten in the last three days.
I have tried everything I can find to try. It has been 3 days of trying - very frustrated. I would very much appreciate direction on this. To recap, I need to get wifi working and want to upgrade to lolipop.
Thanks so much,
Amber

May I ask why is your bootloader is lollipop but your OS rom is still Jelly bean ( you said 4.3). It appears that you might have jelly bean kernel which will not work with lollipop modem and bootloader. Majority of the wifi problem is caused by the kernel and bootloader mismatched, assuming that your radio (modem) has no physical damage. Try to flash the OC4 kernel and see you still have the wifi problem.
If you want to upgrade to lollipop from Jelly bean, there are several guides on this forum explaining step by step.
I flashed the OC4 kernal - no change in wifi

Thanks sway8966,
I flashed the OC4_update_from_OC3.zip file but there was no change - still no wifi. I wonder if I were to upgrade to lollipop would it automatically fix the problem because it would have the matching bootloader and OS rom? Do you think this might solve the problem?

Thanks sway8966,
I flashed the OC4_update_from_OC3.zip file but there was no change - still no wifi. I wonder if I were to upgrade to lollipop would it automatically fix the problem because it would have the matching bootloader and OS rom? Do you think this might solve the problem?
Thanks again.

I do not know what included in the oc4 update from oc3.zip file. As I said before you could try flashing the OC4 kernel file and see whether your wifi is working or not.
Here is the link for the OC4 kernel. You need to flash it via odin.
If you do not have any particular reason to stick with Jelly bean you should upgrade to Lollipop or at least to Kit-kat.
Hi! I had an s4 variant with your problem the same, the wifi nope in none routers.
I gave this device to trash , because i discovered what "happened"
Some stock app, from samsung, masked as anything that i skipped to search (i have much precious time to loose, instead loose really, lost time BRITISH DEVICES IN EXT4 filesystem) what app exactly, is receiving data from samsung server to delete the /system/etc/wifi/bcmdhd.cal
I was obligated to reinstall this file 4 times, changed permission to r--r--r--T untill resolve. But was not sufficient, after this, my wifi, fixed again, but the phone at 8º reboot, after , received a remote conmand again to turn the phone ridiculously slower, i lost my head and crashed this device on the wall, and nevermore i will use this name. Sorry,
All this happened just exactly, after install cwm and root sucessfully, without touch anything on the firmware. Something from samsung inc, is programmed to "detect" these 2 events, and send a "tick" to begin the hell in fire on this devices GT S-Xx

Your phone is probably in soft-brick now. You need to flash the 4.3 firmware via odin or You need to update to full kit-kat.
If you want to go kit-kat flash this NB1 firmware via odin. It is NB1 but the kernel is NC1 so that you can use towel root to root the phone. Anyway flash that firmware and see the phone is normally booting and wifi is working.
IT WORKED!!!

I rooted with towelroot (verified with root checker). I installed superuser but didn't see how to remove bloatware. There are no apps in the apps list. How do I do that? Also, now that it is rooted, is it possible to upgrade it to lollipop? Thanks again.

I am glad to hear that it fixes your problem. The NB1 firmware (cooked by muniz_ri) is a live saver. Keep that one. Down the line if your phone screwed up used that one to revive your phone.
Majority of bloatware are system app as such they will not show up in the app bar To remove those you need an admin rights (root) hence we need to root the phone.
To remove the bloatware there are many bloatware remove apps. However they are not written to the specific phone and OS version as such you need to be very careful when you are using them.
I use titanium backup pro to either freeze or remove the bloatware one by one. You can find the list of bloatware for each version on the net. Another way is to install the lean custom rom.
If you want to upgrade to Lollipop you can do it. If somethings screws up you can use that NB1 to come back to Kitkat.
The latest lollipop for the sgh-i337 is OK2 but OK2 gave me some problem that I could not live with it so I stay at OC4.
If you want to upgrade to OK2 or OC4 do let me know. I will point you the guide and necessary files.

I guess I will pass on lollipop if there was a problem with it. I looked around for a rom and saw CyanogenMod. It looked pretty good but they discontinued the installer. Can I download it on my PC, move it to the ext card on the S4 and install it from there? Without any changes to my current configuration of the S4? Thanks again.

I did not say lollipop has a problem, what I meant was I had some problem with lollipop OK2 as such I stay with lollipop OC4.
I took it as you are talking about the CyanogenMoD for the locked bootloader .
You can install that one. You need to install the safestrap first to flash that rom, as mentioned on that link. However, the link also mentioned that you can not make a phone call with that rom as such they stop developing that rom.

Oh, I didn't understand. I think I would like to try to get up to lollipop. Can you point me to the kernel for that? Also, I have been trying to install CyanogenMod but am running into roadblocks. I think I might have succeeded finally because I now have a yellow triangle and a notice about non-AT&T system software (with a tiny notice - secure fail: kernel). I also had a difficult time installing TWRP as the installer was asking for a file format that the installer didn't download. From what I gather, CyanogenMod looks like a good all around OS and was easy to install when the installer was in play. But if there is another that would suffice but is easier to install, I think that might be a better idea. Could you suggest one?
Sorry about all these questions. I don't know why this is so difficult for me. I feel like an idiot. Thanks again.

SGH-i377 has locked bootloader as such we can not install custom recovery like TWRP or CWM. The only installers we have are safestrap and flashfire. When I was in Kit-kat I used safestrap. It is very troublesome to work with safestrap in lollipop so when I upgrade to lollipop I use falshfire instead.
I have two devices that are on cyanogen mod. I like cyanogen mod but I prefer touch-wiz rom over AOSP though.
The only cyanogen mod you can install is the one that I mentioned in my previous message. You need to use safestrap to install it.
For SGH-I337 you can only install the touch-wiz rom which are written for either safestrap or flashfire. I do not see any AOSP rom written for safestrap or flashfire.
What I did was flash NB1 via odin. root with towl root and install the flashfire. Flash the OC4 rom via flashfire and flash the OC4 bootloader via odin. After my phone boot to lollipop OC4, Installed flashfire and flash the Albe95 S6 port rom. I like to use the S6 features and that custom rom is a stable one. Do you think the process is easy enough?
To upgrade to Lollipop,
I assumed that you are back on NB1 and rooted. If not do that process first. (you mentioned that you installed the cyanogenmode)
Here is the guide telling you step by step how to install lollipop from NB1.
The guide was originally written for OC4 but when OK2 came out it was updated with OK2. So if you want to go to OK2, use the files that mentioned on the guide. If you want to go to OC4 use the file I posted below instead.
I337_OC4_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip
I337_OC4_Stock_Rooted_Deodexed_ROM
I337_OC4_Bootloader.tar.md5
The choice between using normal and deodexed_rom is your call.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A6 (2016) SM-T280 Rooted Or Not Rooted?

Just got the above device for Christmas. While trying to figure out if I could update the version of Android, I chatted with the Samsung Smart Switch help desk and was told that since my device status is listed as "Custom," it has apparently been rooted. Except that when I downloaded Titanium BackUp, it said it couldn't find the root or the SU (the actual error message disappeared and I can't get it back). Anyway, under Root Access it says Failed.
There is no SuperUser software on the device, nor Busy Box. When I booted into recovery, I got basic Android recovery, although it included an option to update from ADB.
So, any guesses as to whether it's been rooted or not? If it has, any issues with installing TWRP, etc., as per the link here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...overy-samsung-galaxy-tab-a6-sm-t280-t3475381? Or just trying to root it, per instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...m-samsung-galaxy-tab-7-0-lte-2016-sm-t3455788.
I would like to update my version of Android to run a couple apps that are currently incompatible, not to mention get rid of the massive bloatware. Don't have Ubuntu and found the instructions in the above two links a little confusing (how do I ' Flash with ODIN 3.10.7 in the AP slot."?) although I can research my way through it.
Or I can just return the tablet for one that hasn't been modified and hope I can update the OS via Smart Switch.

Seems weird that the device is listed as custom out of the box. Best bet is to reflash the custom firmware using ODIN (you have to download a copy of the stock firmware of course) after that you can follow said guide to flash TWRP and then root after.

It was an Open Box purchase - why we got it so cheap. I'm using it as my reading tablet and the Nook app is one of the two that won't work on it. I can (and will) look up ODIN on my own, but for the sake of expediency, if someone has a good link to the why's and what for's and how's, that would be appreciated.
