What back are you choosing! - X 2014 General

I'm interested in the leather, not so much the wood (nothing against it, just not my thing). The overall concern I have is around longevity of the leather and if it really matters, assuming I put a case on it... Lets take a vote!

I am rather interested in more than one back covers - Leather, Wood and one is that bright cyan/blue color shown on the Moto website.
But I am confused about the colour of the phone. Wooden and cyan one will look good with silver bezel which is available on the white phone but I prefer black one so that the ugly fake speaker bars hide away. My primary confusion is still about the base phone colour.

Speaker bars aren't "fake" lol. The top one is an earpiece and the bottom is a speakerphone. All reviews indicating audio output volume and quality are superb.
Do you see the 2014 colors listed somewhere?

My 2013 Moto X was way louder and cleaner than HTC One M7. I still have my Moto X because it has the best and loudest speakerphones. It may not be stereo but it does the job very well. 2013 Moto X had best reception, great battery life and awesome speaker. I can't wait for 2014 Moto X as I'm sure it will be just as complete of a package like Moto X 2013 but better, IMHO of course

Depends on how much, if it's $25 extra then I might get ebony again, or bamboo. If it's $50 then forget it, I'll get ToastMade woodback instead. That's taking into the account of the 32gb storage in the motomaker version I guess.

Aren't these backs removable? So, if you were to order one with leather and later decide you wanted a wood one, you would be able to change it yourself?

I'm surprised to see people not concerned about durability on the leather given even the pics in reviews already are scratched, etc.
You can change them yourself but you need to take the phone apart, lol. It isnt like on the moto g

I'm leaning leather the burnt brown color you see in the Motorola website

Could you please shed some more light on how the back covers are replaced in the new Moto X? I though its routine open and replace kind of job!

They cannot be easily replace

I could be wrong, but how hard could it possibly be? Are they individually glued on at the factory? I would think they would just snap on for the sake of expediency...

I'm Brazilian and I just got mine in last friday. I'm not an expert on teardown devices like this, but it seems the back is somehow glued on the metal frame. I don't think it is easily replaceable (I would wait for an ifixit.com teardown).

If not easily replaceable then its big let down. I was thinking to get atleast three types of back covers but...
Looks like Motorola is not interested in my money.
EDIT
Anyways, found one picture if this conveys anything :

This is going to be hard to decide colors. At least there is a delivery date 9-29, so I'm hoping they have the phones out like they did with the 2013 moto x at best buy so I can compare. I was going to wait a bit longer til the nexus announcement but man the moto maker is fun to play with

Thanks for the pic. That's the color leather I am leaning to (natural), and from the look of the trim it appears that one would have the black front. I would match that with the metallic olive, and my tough decision is either a white or black front.

disappointed in the lack of a yellow color, or the plastic color options in general.

Yea, I was looking for yellow too.

I voted plastic, but think I might go with something like this..

Unfortunately we will be getting phone from an exclusive online retailer in India. We din't get facility of Moto Maker last time neither we will get it this time. Phone is yet to come on sell but its listed now and we will have to choose form three preset models - black-plastic, black-leather, white-teak wood.

Pebble Blue back cover (Samsung changed the colour)

I know there was a thread about this before but I cant seem to find it. I also think there were no comparison pictures either
First of all I have two phones because the first one I bought had a fault with the glass.
The shiny one is from the faulty phone and the darker one is my new one.
Which one do you think looks better?
PS: If you see it in real life its not as noticeable as in the pictures.. but you can still easily see it. The darker one looks more purple/ black and the shiny one looks like more of a shaded mirror.
Also the shape at the bottom of the shiny one is from a back cover protector. I took it off but the muck/ dirt was still on there..

If you ask me samsung screwed by changing color.....i was happy about back as well when i heard sammy changed color to more serious one, bit now when i got it i realised that front looks so much cooler despite its purple color in light

It's not as noticeable as the back though.
I like the mirrored back.
So I kept the new back cover instead of the old one.
My phone looks black from a distance.

Pretty sure I saw one in one of the videos today, but it was just the soft-touch surround that was white; back and front are probably still black.

That's just a reflection off of the chrome bezel.
The chrome bezel is only a millimeter or two wide, there's clearly white below that.
HowEVER, it might just be a reflection from the lightbox they're shooting the photo in, but that doesn't really make sense as the soft-touch surround appears to be matte in other footage.
that is either white or a pretty good optical illusion from the materials or the light box...

Google exclusive as to it's employee's? If so I probably wouldn't think they'd go through such a hassle of making the device different color in its entirety just for their staff. For the Nexus Prime it was just a back cover.
I would really like to see how a white version would look like. Currently I have a white Gnex, which is awesome. I'd like a black face and a white back, just like the Gnex. Would be great if Google would shed some light regarding this matter.

Still is technically a "back cover".... just the ring portion of it.
Any more word on a white one??
Do. Not. Want.
I actually cringed when I saw it. Kinda fugly but hey, to each his/her own.

Motomaker factory sucks.

I'm on moto x number three and I've noticed a disturbing trend. The workers that assemble your phone are not very careful. Every device I've purchased has come with superficial scratching on either the bezel, custom color back, or both. This last device has the usual small marks but also a rather deep nick in the bezel right between the silver keys on the side.
Moto has agreed to exchange whenever I want but really, I don't want another 3 or more week wait. I wonder what the magic number is until a manufacturer does QC on the stuff they make. $545 apparently is not enough.

Dude I totally agree. My first moto maker moto x had two little scratches. I got my second one today for replacement and there's still a small scratch, but I'm keeping it. Don't know whether it's the workers or the stock themselves
I just noticed what appears to be a very a small scratch on the back of my phone by the camera opposite the loudspeaker and I'm 99% sure I didn't put it there.
Not to discredit the OP or other post. But I ordered a royal blue with white front and I'm very anal about scratches and thoroughly inspected my phone and it was perfect. No separation or scratches. So QC is not that bad.

Same here, I have two moto x devices, both moto makers and both pristine. But with any mass produced consumer item, there will be issues, I've seen stuff like this with Samsung and Apple... I think, to a degree, superficial defects are more noticeable with moto x users because there is such an emphasis on the aesthetics of the device. I know I've spent more time staring at this phone (not the screen) probably more than all my other phones combined... Just rolling the phone around in my hands admiring the color, build and uniqueness... This in itself, fundamentally, increases the odds of finding those defects.
But the two I have are the best build quality in a phone I've seen with android and the fact that it was built to order is that much more satisfying.
Op, try not to sweat the small stuff, bit if it bothers you that much then maybe it's time to try a different device? Hopefully you can find something that you find acceptable.
AT&T Moto X rocking rooted 4.4
Mine is fine
3 custom Motomaker devices and 1 stock white device here at work, all perfect.
I'm glad some of you got some nice ones. I love white faced phones but mostly got the white because the black at best buy showed really badly with scratches... Similar bezel design to my nexus s. I have very good vision and I'm ocd. The bezels on all three had some light scratches. The first I returned to recoup $150. It was the least defective of all of the. I feel uber foolish returning it because it was awesome. Gorgeous perfect hued screen, no tint and very tight fit. Second was my $150 off version. Came with less light scratching but had a weird little marr in the olive back finish. Also had 2 small scratches on the sides of the green back. The screen looked great and I would have kept it but it froze downloading 4.4 and refused to fully boot thereafter. Not even rsd lite could bring it back. I sent it back and received my 3rd device yesterday. Phone looked perfect till I looked near the silver keys... Big nick with a spec of dirt in the deepest part of the scratch. I was thinking of just keeping it but if also has a super green tint to it. White is very green. Both of the others looked awesome. Neutral, white whites and no color probs or banding.
I'm kind of hitting Murphys law here or some kind of punishment for saving $150!:

I bought the same color scheme and mine was perfect. hell i didn't even want to touch it at first.
I did drop it on a concrete floor right on to a chip of masonry which put a small nick in the blue back. It was a pretty bad fall, I was suprised it still worked. That fall probably would have cracked my old samsung in half.
Normally I'm prone to bad luck like the above mentioned but my custom (cement back / white front / blue buttons) Verizon Moto X showed up at my door in flawless condition.
I too am VERY anal about this sort of thing...
I'm not anal. Mine was fine. Could care less about anything other then the screen or camera glass, case always covers it. I can imagine there's no scratches on your car too right?
I must be somewhat lucky then, because I am ridiculously picky about this sort of thing. I expect a %100 perfect device inside the box when I unbox it. Any scratch, blemish, or manufacturing defect of any kind is completely unacceptable. If I see dust on the screen cover they ship with I'm frustrated, but it's tolerable. I have had two developer editions and a motomaker for Tmo and they have all been acceptable. By acceptable I mean no scratches of any kind anywhere on the device, no misaligned components, and no button issues. If there is any lint or dust that shows up under the camera lens cover, that warrants a replacement.
I expect anyone else to hold Moto to the same standards too, I'd be very upset if the phone showed up with any of these problems.
we have 2 Moto Maker Moto X's and both came flawless..
one, white front, woven black back silver accents and one white front, royal blue back with purple accents. No issue with either.
thats too bad about the OP having issues, maybe those have been end of the day friday builds???
I also wonder, if you send yours back do they just change out the parts on it or give you another entire new phone..
I'll buy someone's scratched Moto x... Give you 100 bucks and I'll put my otter box on it... And sell my perfect white one for 400.

Just conditioned the Leather X - PICS!

I love leather, which is why I got the cognac leather back. I'm very familiar with Horween---lots of of my high dollar boots (incl. shell) are made from their leather. I decided to condition my X to help protect it from accidental spills, etc. I also wanted to deepen the "richness" of the color. After applying the product, I gently heated the surface, let it sit, then wiped the excess. Finally, a gently brushing with a horse hair brush. Standard treatment I do for my good boots. Obenauf's is really good for preventing water stains.
Very pleased with results. Unfortunately, no before pics. These pics were taken with the phone placed on a white sheet of paper. The color didn't change much which I expected. Maybe a bit warmer. Texture is bit grippier but I suspect that will smoothen out the more the leather rubs on hands, clothes, etc.

I am so torn between cognac and natural. Problem with cognac is, I have seeN at least 4 variations of the color so far. No store near me has any real life examples. I'm just biding my time trying to get real world photos of them before I make my decision.

That is saweet! I'd have ordered cognac instead of natural if I'd known it was that beautiful. Still waiting for mine to come. Shipping date slid back to 10/17 now. ?
The shine from the lighting makes it seem just a tad more red than it is. Holding my phone up now to the first pic....they are like 98% matching. Just imagine it more matte. A few days since treating it now. Very supple. The juxtaposition of warm, organic material against cold, machined metal makes this phone so unique and special. Interestingly, the logo looks like it came from a branding iron (just lasers of course).

Here is mine. It's almost black looking. Sorry but the best camera I have is my Nexus 7.

2 versions?

Look at the lastest pic. The black one looks a little thicker. Also different material. Honestly I like the black one better. Has some moto x influence.
I would think three versions though. Unless that black one has a case around it which would be strange for a press shot. Because this and this show the black one with a kevlar finish all around the back rather than the edge.
I would hope that the red one would come with that black one's finish though because that chain-like finish looks sick.

Actually that would make sense. Everyone is saying that there would be no Maxx, but then the finishes on the back don't really make much sense. However I don't like the plastic/MGF frame around the Kevlar finish so I hope it's just a case in the end, or atleast the non-Maxx edition. The finish looks great, but it should go all the way around.
j

While that odd looking "third" version of the phone raises questions, i highly doubt there will be a "Maxx" version of this phone...
What size battery are they going to put in it? The turbo already has a 3900...
That, and we would have already heard about it...it would have passed through the FCC...the training materials would be out there...
Yeah I'm not really sure how to look at it. It'd be an interesting option if it was though haha. Unless they offer it in three finishes. Wasn't last year's or the year before offered in three colors? Red, white. and black I think.
I'm just curious on what the red one will look like. The Droid Maxx is in a deep dark red, whereas the photos of the Droid Turbo look like a bright-vibrant red (looks much better to me). But to be honest, I will probably get whatever is in stock. If I have the choice....I'm thinking red might be my preference.

The one thing I'm most interested in is how the seemingly different "finishes" feel to the touch...
The Droid Ultra was pretty slippery to the touch...while the Droid Maxx had a very soft, grippy texture to its back...
I'm loving the red color for the Turbo...hoping it doesn't have the same finish as the Ultra did..

I'm intrested in the textures of the finishes as well. The first leaked pictures had red and black models looking the same with a sort of woven, but solid back with the "metalized glass" or something.
The newest leaked photo appears to show the same type of back on the red model, but the black one almost appears to have a woven cloth type material on the back. I think I like the look of the black one as far as textures go, but I'll have to see the various options and how they feel first. I had soft touch on my Droid X and loved it. The kevlar/carbon fiber back on my Razr Maxx was nice, had air bubbles under it sometimes and it didn't feel solid or flat all the time.
I have woven black on the back of my Moto X 2013 and like it, but would prefer something more like soft touch if possible.

Yeah...its weird. I guess we will find out on the 28th...
The original leak, that showed the black back plate looks EXACTLY like the material on the current Droid Maxx...which is AWESOME...soft to the touch..nice and grippy..but still has the woven Kevlar...
Later leaks worried me slightly as they look more like the woven back of the Droid Ultra which is a harder, more glossy material...and not even close to as nice to hold...
The LATEST leak is all over the place...the red looks more like the Droid Maxx soft material...bit the black literally looks like it is made out of some sort of cloth which is bizarre
Is it at all possible that there is another model out there? The reason I ask is, both the front facing and red models in the picture are not upright. Any diagonal phone would be slightly shorter than the same phone upright. However, the chainlink finished one is upright and in the picture, it's the same height as the front facing one. I know it's a bit of a stretch, but there could be a smaller version of it in the coming future after release date right? I know that the Razr HD and Razr M didn't release at the same time either.
Then again it could just be like that for display purposes.
Maybe they are going to have a Droid Turbo and a Turbo Maxx.
agreed

Absolutely my concern too. It's darn near my ONLY concern, other than overall size... I've got to pocket this and the new Moto X without that stupid security thing in the verizon stores attached to it. If it's not simply "too big" for me, and the back is "grippy" enough that in combination it feels easy enough to hold and use, this is my next phone.
So Droid Life tweeted a rumored pricing for it. I guess they have a source. So I'm assuming this means one version of the phone, but with three different finishes on the same model?
