Should I upgrade from Nexus 5 to Note 4? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I currently use a Nexus 5 and 2nd gen Nexus 7 (wi-fi only). I love both devices especially the Nexus 5 which I use quite often in Canada (home base), US (on T-Mobile), Europe and Australia. I'm thinking seriously about moving to the Note 4 with the thought I might be able to consolidate on one device. I really like vanilla Android and being able to get the latest stable OS ASAP. I used to have both my Nexus 5 and 7 rooted but don't anymore as corporate apps required I unroot and I've learned to live without root and xposed and all that good stuff.
My greatest concern about moving to something like the Note 4 is losing the very extensive 3G and LTE band support that the Nexus 5 has. I don't believe the carrier-specific models of the Note 4 are yet known but I'm assuming to get UMTS and LTE band 4 support that I'd have to get the T-Mobile model and unlock it. However I'm also a little confused as I read somewhere that with the Note 3, the SM-N900T (sold by T-Mobile) and the SM-N900W8 (apparently sold by all Canadian carriers) all have pentaband support albeit just with carrier-specific ROMs although this thread seems to suggest the only way to get band 4 support is with the T-Mobile model.
I'd appreciate any advice from knowledgeable users about this. I'm sure there must be others who want to move to the Note 4 but want pentaband support including LTE where possible.
Thanks.

Nothing is better than Nexus 5 until Nexus 6
as u know u can feel freedom with nexus device
don't upgrade to note 4 buy it beside nexus 5

Yes I must admit that the Nexus devices are fantastic. I had the Nexus 4 and also the Galaxy Nexus. Nexus 6 will be interesting.

Unless you need S Pen (as I do), don't move from the Nexus land of quick updates and stock Android.

Differs from person to person. I'm moving from the Nexus 5 mainly because of the smaller screen, no expandable storage and subpar battery life.
For me, I say sell the Nexus 5

This sums up my thoughts quite well.
I love the Nexus 5 for its simplicity (it just works, no crashes, no hassle) and the sheer speed of it. However, I'm getting very frustrated with the battery life, it gets me through a day, but I have to keep an eye on what I have running (no location, no Google Now, etc) which is annoying, and I have to limit my use sometimes if I know I won't be able to charge it until the late evening.
The lack of memory is also a killer for me. I don't think I will ever get a device with only 32GB of storage again, I store a lot of stuff on my phone, which leaves me with very little free storage, and I end up juggling what I have saved/installed on the phone. 64GB would be an absolute minimum of storage, but ideally I'd want a microSD slot.
The camera on the N5 is decent, but there's been a few times where it's annoyed me with poor performance, slow use time, and poor focus performance. It can take some pretty nice photos most of the time, but an upgrade would be definitely welcome!
Then there's the size, I actually really like the size of the N5, but I'm just tempted to try something larger and see how I get on with it. The same goes for the S-pen, I may find that I don't use it at all, but then again I might find it something that I really enjoy having.
So overall... I'll probably swap the N5 out for the N4.

I have the HTC One M7 and this is the last time I am getting a phone that does not have removeable battery(I dont like power bank) and memory. I will be moving to the N4. BUT I will dearly miss the two front speakers as I like to Skype and video chat on it. I dont like headphones.

LG nexus 4 32gb LTE

What are your guys views on whether or not Google will cave in and release a LTE or 32gb variant of the LG nexus 4? share your thoughts.
I just don't see it happening....really doubt it!
Highly unlikely.
4G is useless with my country ( Vietnam )
i think the 32gb variant is a much bigger possibility. they did that with the nexus 7... why not the lg nexus 4?
well with the issue of LTE, very unlikely. but im kind of on the fence with the 32gb idea. true, they did release a 32gb version of the nexus 7 after getting rid of the 8gb variant, but in the case of the galaxy nexus, the never release a 32gb version. i know the nexus 7 is more recent, so google might go about the nexus 4 like they did the nexus 7 (releasing a 32gb version later), but the case of the galaxy nexus, in my opinion, is more closely in-tune with the nexus 4 (as they are both phones). honestly i just dont know and its killing me cos i really want this phone! the lack of memory is the only thing stopping me from buying this on release day

I think that the nexus 7 is the reason the nexus 4 will not have a 32gb version.

Never thought of it that way...but that makes a lot of sense.
LTE and more memory can be done if LG are pushed hard enough for it. It maybe in the pipeline already, take samsung for example when they enhanced the nexus s with a 4g version.

32GB? Very possible.
LTE? When hell freezes over and pigs fly.
32GB? Maybe, although they didn't do it for the GSM Galaxy Nexus, so I wouldn't bet on it.
LTE? No chance.
There will be a 32GB Nexus.
There will also be a 64GB and 128GB Nexus (128GB memory chips are already in production)
The Nexus will have LTE
However, it will most probably be called the Nexus 5
They did that to the Nexus 7.Its a possibility but i don't think there would be LTE.
Let's hope And LTE is too expensive or not available for most countries anyway :good:
For more memory u can just a OTG available for a couple of dollars on amazon, ebay and use STICKMOUNT. Memory no issue
LTE only popular in US and only if u use AT & T else no use...
The price will increase by fifty dollars if memory is increases and another 100$ if LTE is included, which would take the cost to 500$, which wont be soo attractive as the 349$ tag
No LTE
If you want LTE you're going to wait for the LG Optimus G.
The phone is a world phone and will be very popular overseas where most countries don't have/don't care about LTE. I doubt we'd see them go through the hassle as that would require a different soc to include the LTE modem

Considering Sprint eventually got the two Samsung Nexus devices, I wouldn't be surprised if someday they get an LTE Nexus 4. And considering the CDMA Galaxy Nexus models were 32GB, there's a good chance said Sprint Nexus would also be 32gb. Dont expect it for quite a while after launch though.
Verizon or GSM LTE though? Nope lol.

Phone Buying Advice. (Note3)

I currently have a iPhone 5s with a defective home button. I was going to return my phone today and purchase a Note 3, I found myself holding off because of the impending Nexus 5 announcement. I am a huge fan of the Nexus series, with their stock android experience, fast software updates and premium design, they always seem like my go to android phone. The downfall to the Nexus is that I would have to give up Verizon and there awesome LTE coverage (the only carrier with full LTE coverage in my area) for AT&T which is terrible for dropping calls and have next to no LTE in the area. Even worse would be T-Mobile which has NO SERVICE at all in some parts of Long Island. Also in past experiences I find myself hating touch-wiz within a few days of owning a Samsung device. But the Note 3 is the must cutting edge phone on the market and that 1080p screen looks amazing.
I find myself torn between the stock android, awesome design and rom friendly Nexus 5 with poor cell coverage on AT&T or the cutting edge, 5.7 1080p monster Note 3 with crappy gingerbread looking touch-wiz and knox security that makes even roming the phone a potential issue, but with the ability to have full LTE coverage on Verizon.
Any opinions from owners of the Note 3?
Wait for the note 3 developer edition, flash whatever you like. Crappy service is not tolerable to me.

I too am waiting for the Developer Edition of the Note 3. I will jump on that. I am really not interested in messing with the bootloader if I don't have too.

What's the point of the developer addition if you're not gonna mess with the boot loader.

Which Version Should I Get?

I'm on the fence between the Nexus 5 and the Note 3 right now. The only reason i'm even considering the Note 3 is because of the greatly extended battery life it supposedly has. My question though is which version of the Note 3 do I need to get if I'm going to use Ting as my carrier? Also does it have the ability to run on any network like the Nexus 5 does?

[Q] Basic question from a new guy

Hello,
I'm interested in a Note 4 as an International travel device to utilize local SIM cards in whatever country/region I happen to be in (primarily the EU and Africa). I'm primarily focused on versitle connectivity for voice and text communication as well as navigational apps.
I'm having trouble deciphering the various versions (C vs. F vs. U) because I'm, admittedly, a total novice at this. So, best unlocked version to be the most versatile wordwide? Thanks.

I would have thought something like a Nexus 6, which has only one version, would be more suitable?

Where are you from and where would you be buying the handset from? Also this band stuff only matters if you are bothered about LTE. Europe /East Africa are on standard 900/2100/1900 mAh 3G which have great coverage everywhere and are universal across the note 4 line.
If you want to not think about this, get an iphone 6 seriously. It's truly a universal phone and will work on about every network out there. (speak from experience)

I'm from the States and will most likely buy the handset online. I already have iPhone 6 that is a contract phone with AT&T, but it's my personal phone and I'd like to get a dedicated work/travel phone. Also, I need my travel phone to be Android based to run my nav program. I'm leaning towards the Note series because of the size/display/expandable memory as this will most likely fill the space of a laptop for periods of time.
Nexus 6? I'm haven't even explored other options outside the Galaxy series... Way to many options out there!

The Nexus 6 is a great phone with pure android but without an SD card slot...if you want many features then go with the note 4...it doesn't really matter which one you get the F has a Snapdragon quad core processor and the C an Exynos octa-core and some different LTE bands...you will be good whichever you chose.
910U is the best. get that one. i roam around EU/HKG a lot and the 910U is excellent - it just works.
Nexus 6 is junk compared to the note 4.

Two versions - XT1100 and XT1103, being international and us versions respectively and with differing LTE bands.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2866827
Do I need to be concerned about the phone being region locked? If ibuy a N910C/F/U from Amazon here in the States, is there a protocol to ensure its truly a global phone that is useable in any region, bands permitting, with region local SIM cards? I've read a few things discussing the region of the phone + region of the sim + region of the first 5 minutes of call time with respect to "unlocking the phone". If I bought a Note 4 off Amazon, traveled to Europe or East Africa and put in a local SIM card... Am I good to go?
If not, what would be my best course of action if I wanted to buy the phone now, here in the US, but have it such that I can globe trot and not be concerned.
Simple answer seems to be iPhone, but I set on the Note 4. Any advice is appreciated.

[USA] Best Note 4 model to get in 2020 (N910T, N910C, or other)?

TL;DR: Specifically looking for a Note 4 that satisfies the following:
- GSM Unlocked 4G LTE and works in the US*
- Has an unlocked bootloader (is rootable, custom ROM-able, etc.)
- Is exempt from, or at least has the fewest reported instances of, the infamous eMMC failure, if possible
*I don't have much knowledge on carrier frequency bands - if it does calls, SMS, and 4G LTE data at reasonable speeds for a 6 year old phone (can stream a video at 480p), that's fine
I have a N910A (the AT&T one) and it's by far and wide the best phone I've ever had. It has an unparalleled set of hardware features that no phone on the market today has beat (IR, S-Pen, user-removable battery, user-servicable internal electronics to an extent, 16MP camera with focus, stabilization and 1080p60 recording, SD card slot, and headphone jack, all in one package). But sadly it fell victim to the eMMC issue earlier this year. So far the cardboard fix combined with wakelock has kept it usable, but it still runs slow, overheats, and randomly freezes doing simple tasks.
However I refuse to give up on the 4 just yet. I have a bunch of spare batteries, plus all my chargers are still micro USB, and the phone still does everything I need it to and more; had it not been for the eMMC issue it would still be going strong.
I'm leaning toward either the N910T (Snapdragon, T-Mobile) for its great software modding potential, or the N910C (Exynos) because I've heard the Exynos one may be less prone to the eMMC failure (?) and has better performance (?), but this is speculation. Plus the Exynos one is more expensive and harder to find. I had thought about just getting a motherboard of one of those two models to put in my AT&T shell, but with that comes the hassles of possibly needing to swap the cameras too, coming across other incompatibilities like carrier frequencies, and worst of all getting one with a bad ESN.
If I'm right that N910T or N910C is the way to go, I'm hoping for some input to steer me in the right direction by addressing a few questions I have that I couldn't find clear answers to:
1. Is it true that the Exynos one isn't prone to eMMC failures, or is every Note 4 susceptible all the same? If the latter is true that pretty much confirms I would go for N910T.
2. Is the Exynos version more or less equivalent to the Snapdragon one in terms of usability when used in the US?
3. Does one or the other have greater custom ROM support?
4. Would I run into any other issues using the Exynos one in the US that the T-Mobile one wouldn't have?
Any input is appreciated, but please be aware I'm really looking for input based on my question. If you're only here to recommend a new phone outside of the Note series, it will take some hard convincing
My carrier is TracFone. Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks for your help!
It's hard to say really, but what you need to know first is.. Which carriers had the most eMMC failure, then go from there.. If your here in the states, then either ATT again, or T-Mobile. I have had 3 Note4 1 with Verizon, and 2 Sprint.. Neither one had failures.. I sold the one from Verizon when I went back to Sprint.. The first Sprint I had for less than 6 months, as I got bored, and wanted something new.. But with the phones being locked down, and me not happy with phones I have had including my Pixel 3a Xl which is being kept in it's box only as a spare.. I went back to this phone, because of root, removable battery, S-pen, really decent camera that came in the custom rom etc. And believe it or not, with a little tweaking, it is just as smooth as my Pixel.
Seeing as you live in the US. It would be more beneficial for you to get a US variant of the Note 4. As both the international variants won't receive LTE from US Cell Providers with the exception of T-Mobile, I believe
