[Q] First time Rooting on a Samsung device Advice plz - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I personally use HTC one and am rooted with a custom rom. I had purchased a verizon Galaxy Note 3 for my sister as a Christmas gift and she loves the thing but i guess after loading up junk to it and the bloat already on the phone its gotten slow and Samsung patched out the ability to tether. So she has commissioned me to root her phone for her and find a Debloated rom that's as close to stock as possible. Correct me if i'm wrong but based on my reading Samsung devices have a extra hurdle to jump called KNOX and it will cause you to void your warranty and its unrecoverable from that voided state ? Is what i'm asking possible to do without doing this to the phone if this even happens ? I know the new TowelRoot method is the in thing to rooting Samsung devices but that's all i know about it. Her Note3 is on the second OTA update does this matter ? should i update to the latest OTA ? then root ? Any input would be GREATLY appreciated especially cause you'd help me to get my sister to stop harassing me to do this for her lol

Check to see if the phone is on NC4, most likely you are at this point. If so read this thread here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787627
Scroll down to post 2 and follow instructions that read coming from NC4 OTA.
If you've never used Odin see here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2576104
Once up and running most roms are good. Alliance is great but the settings are very involved and may a bit much for her. I have the last Baja rom before they became Alliance if you're interested. The s5 port is a work of art as well but more than she's looking for probably. I can't really say for what rom you should pick as that's user choice. Hope this helps.

Thanks for checking and sharing that pic. You're on MJE. Look for the kingo root app online. There's no link on xda. The app is pretty straight forward from what I remember. If she just wants bloatware gone she can download Titanium Backup once rooted and get rid of some bloat.

I just got a new SGSII and I don't want to have a big yellow exclamation mark my current one has
Then buy a £2 MicroUSB "jig" from eBay - that will clear it.
what do you mean "unlock without root?"
also there is a solution to exclamation mark if you flash custom kernels.

No you need root.
Flash CF root, then flash back your stock kernel, you will still have root but without the yellow warning triangle.

how to I backup my stock kernel?
No need to, just make a note of what kernel you're using, then download it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
1. It is not possible to root without flashing kernal
But you can update firmware to newest one via ODIN
2. You can unlock without rooting... Its called paying for the unlock code
Free is only through rooting
3. And why have you got another one if you already have a SGS2 ??????
Is that you are hooked on to rooting and bricking

Just flash CF-Root kernel and you're done.

If you gotten a new SGS2, should that not have come with the latest firmware version of that phone, in such a case, would rooting with CF-root not be better?

go to applications > settings > phone information
and note down the kernel version. (look at the KE, KF1/2/3 etc)
and compare that to the ones in that topic. Pick the one that is like it, or almost like it.

but since I've already changed the kernel thru odin wont that information already be skewed?
Well if you didn't note down your stock kernel and flashed a completely different one into it, then you have a problem. Im still very much new to android systems and XDA. (i registed today, but I lurked and read and researched for several days)
But, I think you can just grab one of the latest ones but I think some more experienced users here can give you a better answer on that matter.

Add Memory to my N10

Hi there,
I got the N10 and I have run out of space already, so I bought a OTG cable and a 256GB USB stick, so I can load all the music and movies I need on the drive.
So I connect everything and no luck, so I try and std. 8GB stick and same issue.
Then I start reading and find that the best solution for me is probably Stickmount, or something similar, but I need to root my device to use it.
So here is my question:
I am happy to have the stock N10 SW installed and do not really need to load custom ROMs.
I would like to receive future std. OTA updates
So how do I root my device and maintain the requisites above. I have never rooted a device and do not know much about the process, so I would really appreciate detailed info/step-by-step info... I have access to a PC, but use a mac, so is there a SW solution for mac to root?
Ps. what are the downsides of rooting, if done as I requested? and What are the typical Nuub mistakes?
Many thanks,
Nick
You can use an app called Nexus Media Importer to mount an external USB drive without root.
Use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003938.
This gives you root without unlocking and OTA should works.
Don't bother part that unlock is necessary - is not (for me and others is not - you must try by yourself).
For drivers use Universal Naked one.
Good luck!

OK, I followed the thread and rooted my gn10.. I also downloaded an app that let's me lock and unlock my boot loader without wiping the device...
If I still want to get the ota updates, what do I need to do/what mode do I need to leave it in to make sure I get them? Locked or unlocked? And will it be an issue the my device is rooted?
Also, what is the latest gn10 ROM available? I have 4.2.1. Is it worth upgrading and if so, which is the best ROM out there and how do I find it and install it?
Many thanks for all your help!

To receive the OTA updates you don't have to do anything except check when they're available! 4.2.2 is the latest, within you may want to check if it's available.
Rooting simply lets you access the root of the device, it won't stop updates or anything similar. If you update to 4.2.2 OTA you may lose root, you can easily get it back by using the same instructions as you followed to root it in the first place, or use the toolkit. Or you might not lose it, and either way it's no big deal, you can always check to see if you have it anyway.
Custom roms are more daunting but they're really not that hard, if you feel up to the task you will have to make sure you have an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery installed, then it's just a case of wiping the device and installing it. There are loads of videos on YouTube that can help you do it, and and countless threads on here. Paranoid android is my favourite, if you install a custom rom kiss OTA updates goodbye, when a new version is released it usually comes with all the updates.
Question directed at OP: Where/which OTG cable did you get? I'm considering one so I can hook into my external media HDD.

[Q] Root and S-OFF phone requirements (kernel?, knox?, build number?

Hi All,
In the past I successfully rooted, S-OFF and installed custom ROMs in my previous phones (HTC Desire, Galaxy 2 & 4 if not mistaken) with the help of this forum, thanks all!
Since last summer I have a Galaxy 5 (I changed homes and Verizon is the only carrier that provides reliable service in my area, so I had to "upgrade" (sarcasm) from my Galaxy 4)
Now I want to root and (if recommended) S-OFF my phone following the instruction provided here, but before starting I want to know what are the minimum requirements (if any!) in terms of Kernel, Build Number, KNOX version... etc to succeed.
I'm attaching screenshots showing the info displayed under the "About phone" menu
If someone that had gone through this process wants to share his/her own experience, please do it. It was quite a long time ago since the last time I embarked in those tasks, so please be as explicit as possible
Thanks in advance for your support.

S-off is only for HTC devices, so it doesn't apply here. I believe you need to follow the instructions in this guide but start at step 4:

Hi Again!
In point number 1 of the procedure (1. Place the ROM onto your device (use either internal or ext-sdcard).), to which ROM does it refer? The procedure ask to download 2 files right before that, both with ROM names on it:
- G900V_OC4_Stock_Rooted_ROM
- G900V_OC4_Stock_DeOdexed_ROM
Which one should I place in my device?
Rgds!:good:
I would recommend the one that say stock rooted if you don't plan on theming or using xposed. If you plan on using either of those choose the deodexed one.
Update - Job done!
Just a quick update
I can confirm that the procedure described here worked for my Verizon SG5 under Android 5.0. Thanks to all that made that possible!
I would just comment that in order to disable KNOX, you can follow the procedure posted here
Now I'm working in removing the bloatware of my phone (hopefully without removing any required component to keep the phone working!). Any advise in that sense will be appreciated.
Rgds!

[SOLVED] Help! me go from CM12.1 >stock >straight talk

I won an HTC One M9 from sprint. My previous phone was a non-triband L720 Samsung S4.
I'm selling the phone to a friend who will be getting Sprint, but can't yet do it because the closest place around is like 60 miles away!
So in the mean time, he got a straight talk card (CDMA&GSM)
I have found two relevant URLs pertaining to unlocking the phone.
Domestic unlock - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2530610
And international - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415587
Thing is,
A. I'm in good standing with Sprint so I can get it unlocked.
B. Dear god look at those instructions! I can unlock it manually, but dang man! That's scary if I go into a menu and screw things up, or worse, it doesn't unlock and I don't even know which step I messed up on. I've been flashing for years, I'm not a newbie.
I need help with:
A. helping me know which stock from to flash. I came from lollipop.
B. while keeping my recovery if possible. He wants my CM12.1, so I will back it up and then restore it.
C. Do I need to flash any modems/basebands? I'm confused. I have
L720PUGOD2 currently.
So
1. Backup cm12.1
2. flash lollipop stock
3.call Sprint, get UICC unlock
they will domestic unlock it right?
4. Then I can get back to the cm12.1 on my own.
Is that correct? From what I read, CDMA straight talk
So hopefully it's that easy. My buddy want the phone working asap so I would really appreciate an opinion from a pro. Thanks!

K, so I was using a guide that required me to download a self extracting zip that would downgrade me to M919. It just. wouldn't. work. I went through hell to make it work.
downloaded Kies, drivers.... I ended using a different guide that had me downgrade to NG2. with a few lines of ADB, I was unlocked! two days, 20 files later....
Anyways, flashed the Google edition ROM, pimped it out, and everyone is happy. I learned a lot in the process.

Not from a website, he must be a samsung ses or employee.
Any word on a potential release date for nougat? Extremely dissatisfied with Samsungs lack of support with the U variants. Makes me want to avoid Samsung products here on out.
It makes me think that they're waiting to synchronize the S8 and S7u software releases... So perhaps the S7u will get all the S8 features before the carrier versions?
I know the SM-G930VL got Nougat today. No Wi-Fi calling or video call but it did finally get it. It's the Straight Talk unlocked version.
That's pretty pitiful when prepaid carriers get it before unlocked owners...
It's pretty stupid that an UNLOCKED version doesn't have the latest software, so dumb of Samsung to do that.
Also None of the Verizon versions of S7 has the updated firmware too, so far only T-Mobile in the US has 7.0
May be AT&T does too

what? no, just scroll down (bottom of first post) to where it says "return to stock" and follow the instructions there. you don't have to be rooted to install another official samsung rom. and also fwiw even if you do end up rooting you can always reinstall stock rom without tripping knox (as implied in the tutorial).

Hmm, this is going to root the phone, I don't want to root it, as it will decrease it's value. I will wait for another week or two if there is no update to 7.0 I will sell it

Just like he said but when you download the Verizon firmware, make sure you use CSC and not the HOME CSC when you flash. Home will keep your data but I'm not sure how it'll react coming from a different carrier.
