Hi there,
I got the N10 and I have run out of space already, so I bought a OTG cable and a 256GB USB stick, so I can load all the music and movies I need on the drive.
So I connect everything and no luck, so I try and std. 8GB stick and same issue.
Then I start reading and find that the best solution for me is probably Stickmount, or something similar, but I need to root my device to use it.
So here is my question:
I am happy to have the stock N10 SW installed and do not really need to load custom ROMs.
I would like to receive future std. OTA updates
So how do I root my device and maintain the requisites above. I have never rooted a device and do not know much about the process, so I would really appreciate detailed info/step-by-step info... I have access to a PC, but use a mac, so is there a SW solution for mac to root?
Ps. what are the downsides of rooting, if done as I requested? and What are the typical Nuub mistakes?
Many thanks,
Nick
You can use an app called Nexus Media Importer to mount an external USB drive without root.
Use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003938.
This gives you root without unlocking and OTA should works.
Don't bother part that unlock is necessary - is not (for me and others is not - you must try by yourself).
For drivers use Universal Naked one.
Good luck!

Just kidding.
It's very easy to both root and unlock. You also open up a whole other side of apps that aren't available to you on stock
Good luck

Awesome... Love it... thanks for sharing..
Please can you let me know what I am missing not rooting it? Is there a good write up somewhere?
Many thanks,

OK, I followed the thread and rooted my gn10.. I also downloaded an app that let's me lock and unlock my boot loader without wiping the device...
If I still want to get the ota updates, what do I need to do/what mode do I need to leave it in to make sure I get them? Locked or unlocked? And will it be an issue the my device is rooted?
Also, what is the latest gn10 ROM available? I have 4.2.1. Is it worth upgrading and if so, which is the best ROM out there and how do I find it and install it?
Many thanks for all your help!

To receive the OTA updates you don't have to do anything except check when they're available! 4.2.2 is the latest, within you may want to check if it's available.
Rooting simply lets you access the root of the device, it won't stop updates or anything similar. If you update to 4.2.2 OTA you may lose root, you can easily get it back by using the same instructions as you followed to root it in the first place, or use the toolkit. Or you might not lose it, and either way it's no big deal, you can always check to see if you have it anyway.
Custom roms are more daunting but they're really not that hard, if you feel up to the task you will have to make sure you have an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery installed, then it's just a case of wiping the device and installing it. There are loads of videos on YouTube that can help you do it, and and countless threads on here. Paranoid android is my favourite, if you install a custom rom kiss OTA updates goodbye, when a new version is released it usually comes with all the updates.
Question directed at OP: Where/which OTG cable did you get? I'm considering one so I can hook into my external media HDD.

Asus is the best company in the world imho
Now the question is should we go back to stock and update to 3.2 OTA and get the update tomorrow or wait for a custom 3.2 ROM to be released?

Hey guys quick question, if you have stock 3.1 that's rooted and have clockwork mod installed, can you still directly update through the tablet or will the cwm and root cause problems?

No. You can not update through OTA when you have CWM installed.

I don´t know if I´m happy with the 3.2
Take note, though: With Android 3.2, SD card support means something slightly different than what it's meant in the past. Whereas Android smartphones treat SD cards like regular drives, with full read and write access, Android 3.2 tablets view external cards in a much less PC-like manner. In short, apps can read an SD card -- but they can't write to it.
The reason: Google has switched to a new protocol for SD card handling in the 3.2 release. The thinking seems to be that with the high amount of internal space provided on Honeycomb tablets, most users will be turning to SD cards for purposes like media storage as opposed to application and app data storage. With that mentality, writing data from a tablet to an external card becomes less important, and a simplified user experience -- one that's less dependent on a user's understanding of file system structure -- becomes a higher priority.
To be clear, you can still write to a mounted SD card via your PC, using a USB connection; you just can't do it from the tablet itself. That means in an Android file manager utility like Astro, you'll be able to browse through the SD card and access its files, but if you try to copy files to the SD card or edit any SD-card-stored files, you'll find those options to be grayed out and unavailable.

I think that really sucks
I'll wait for the CWM flashable version. This is awesome. Asus does it right. Just give us quick vanila android update with minimal crapwares. That's all we want.
I'll be waiting for the updates of custom rom's as well, probably won't be long.
Let's see how many more 3.2 threads we can get!

I just got a new SGSII and I don't want to have a big yellow exclamation mark my current one has
Then buy a £2 MicroUSB "jig" from eBay - that will clear it.
what do you mean "unlock without root?"
also there is a solution to exclamation mark if you flash custom kernels.

No you need root.
Flash CF root, then flash back your stock kernel, you will still have root but without the yellow warning triangle.

how to I backup my stock kernel?
No need to, just make a note of what kernel you're using, then download it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
1. It is not possible to root without flashing kernal
But you can update firmware to newest one via ODIN
2. You can unlock without rooting... Its called paying for the unlock code
Free is only through rooting
3. And why have you got another one if you already have a SGS2 ??????
Is that you are hooked on to rooting and bricking

go to applications > settings > phone information
and note down the kernel version. (look at the KE, KF1/2/3 etc)
and compare that to the ones in that topic. Pick the one that is like it, or almost like it.

Well if you didn't note down your stock kernel and flashed a completely different one into it, then you have a problem. Im still very much new to android systems and XDA. (i registed today, but I lurked and read and researched for several days)
But, I think you can just grab one of the latest ones but I think some more experienced users here can give you a better answer on that matter.

I personally use HTC one and am rooted with a custom rom. I had purchased a verizon Galaxy Note 3 for my sister as a Christmas gift and she loves the thing but i guess after loading up junk to it and the bloat already on the phone its gotten slow and Samsung patched out the ability to tether. So she has commissioned me to root her phone for her and find a Debloated rom that's as close to stock as possible. Correct me if i'm wrong but based on my reading Samsung devices have a extra hurdle to jump called KNOX and it will cause you to void your warranty and its unrecoverable from that voided state ? Is what i'm asking possible to do without doing this to the phone if this even happens ? I know the new TowelRoot method is the in thing to rooting Samsung devices but that's all i know about it. Her Note3 is on the second OTA update does this matter ? should i update to the latest OTA ? then root ? Any input would be GREATLY appreciated especially cause you'd help me to get my sister to stop harassing me to do this for her lol

Check to see if the phone is on NC4, most likely you are at this point. If so read this thread here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787627
Scroll down to post 2 and follow instructions that read coming from NC4 OTA.
If you've never used Odin see here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2576104
Once up and running most roms are good. Alliance is great but the settings are very involved and may a bit much for her. I have the last Baja rom before they became Alliance if you're interested. The s5 port is a work of art as well but more than she's looking for probably. I can't really say for what rom you should pick as that's user choice. Hope this helps.

Thanks for checking and sharing that pic. You're on MJE. Look for the kingo root app online. There's no link on xda. The app is pretty straight forward from what I remember. If she just wants bloatware gone she can download Titanium Backup once rooted and get rid of some bloat.

Yeah sorry guys. Been stupidly busy. I'll put a walk through re what I did and some screenies as soon as I can get the time. All good though, know using Go Launcher and Go Lockscreen. All seem to be working flawlessly with Google apps all installed too. Also used Titanium Pro to disable Lockscreen Ads.
Hi having trouble signing in to Google play¿ Can you do a little guide?
So. All I really did .that facilitated this was the downgrade. The rest was simple. Frankly if you don't have to go to Amazon for the downgrade you're on the home straight.
Once rooted via Towelroot I used Titanium Backup to 'freeze' the Special Offers apk.
Install Gapps and rebooted.
Then I Installed Go Launcher (bought it actually) as Nova launcher didn't change the wallpaper.
Finally installed Go Lockscreen to bypass the lack of images on the touchscreen after removing the ads.
I'll upload some screenies if you like?

This version will work fine.
"Special Offers apk" one of the components that displays Amazon promotions on the lock screen. Titanium Backup can be used to disable ("freeze") applications so they can't run. Other tools can do this too. This is a UI refinement and not necessary for 4.5.3 -> 3.2.8 rollback.

I have been seeing a lot about the "build.prop" file and needing to have the right permissions set on it. I'm not sure what that file does or when you need to worry about it. Does it come into play with a 4.5.3 downgrade to 3.2.8 running Safestrap and Sock ROM/Nexus ROM?

No, it is not necessary for this downgrade. And, without a custom recovery, if it gets corrupted, you are probably bricked.
Build.prop is a file that neatly lays out a bunch of running constraints for the operating system.
So, follow the downgrade directions and you will be happiest leaving build prop alone.
Good luck.

Ever since I sold my old phone, I can't help but miss features like viper4android and other magisk goodies that I used to have.
After the pie update which broke the bluetooth function I downgraded my phone back to oreo using odin and original fw.
I have been looking for a complete way to install a custom recovery (twrp) and use the phone with custom roms, but i have not found any complete guide yet.

Hey. Its not that hard and you already know the process. Go and try renovation ice . I am using it from a month and nothings better then it . The speed, the battery timing and tweaks are all amazing. https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...ovate-ice-g950-g955-android-7-0-aqdg-t3598040
For installing a custom rom you need a custom recovery so flash twrp using odin .https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/how-to/guide-how-to-install-twrp-root-galaxy-t3752480
And While flashing renovation ice dont remove your system apps and dont do tweaks while flashing renovation ice there will be options for tweaks and removing apps but dont use them because when i did that my phone just bootloop and the next time i tried to flash it without using any advance options and then it was successful. On the first boot it may be slow or dont boot dont do anything let id do that wait and then it be all fine . I hope may this helps you and the rom is already rooted with magisk if not then tell me .
