[Q] Bluetooth Auto-disconnect Every 15 minutes - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am not sure if this the right place to post this but I have spent so much time on the problem that I thought it was time to see if someone else has an idea.
I use Bluetooth a lot and am actively using the following Bluetooth devices:
Plantronics Legend (phone calls)
Sony SBH20 (music while motorcycling)
Volkswagon GTI (phone calls & music while driving)
Jawbone ERA (optionally when I don't have the Legend around)
Sony Smartwatch 2 (does not connect to phone/audio)
Gear 2 Neo (would like to replace Sony watch, see below)
All of the audio based devices (including the Neo) routinely lose connection approximately every 15 minutes regardless of which device is actively being used. Other people are complaining of similar issues after an upgrade to KitKat (see below for a discussion of my environment). The Sony Smartwatch does not disconnect pretty much ever. What makes the whole thing really weird is that if the Sony Smartwatch is connected than the other devices don't disconnect either. Therefore, if I am using the Sony than everything works well. However, I really like the Neo hardware and would like to switch but if I do everything starts auto-disconnectng.
I am using an I9500 and have tried the following things all with the same symptoms:
Prism Barebone ROM vers. 6.0-8.0 (4.4.2)
PhoeniX ROM 10.1 (4.3)
Wireless on/off (some others have suggested that similar problems may be due to the wireless trying to use the same band as Bluetooth)
Different Baseband versions (currrently XXUBMG9)
I don't think this can be blamed on the connected device, since it happens with so many different devices and since it doesn't happen when the Smartwatch 2 is connected there must be some software explanation.
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks for reading this far.
Fred
P.S. I know it is ~15 minutes because I measured it over the course of five disconnections with the stopwatch on the NEO.

Bluetooth speeds

Hi,
The bluetooth transfer speed between my X1 and other phones is pathetic. I tried transferring between the X1 and a W810i. Earlier, I get only 20 kBps, whereas, with other phones and the W810i I get 40 kBps.
Can you please tell me whether others face similar problems, or i need to tweak some option here.
The other phones you've mentioned, are they WM devices?
because I think this is a WM problem and not the Xperia itself.
No, they are normal java based SE mobiles...
Do all WM based mobiles have suck slow speeds? nothing we can do?
How much does a HTC diamond or a touch pro get? Anyone?
Well may be something similar to what you guys are experiencing but I have a bluetooth stereo headset and the quality of the phone speed drops drastically when I am using bluetooth stereo. When I have the phone on watching a movie on core it loses frames alot.
I too experience MUCH longer sync times over Bluetooth than my old HTC Universal. I am not sure what's going on here, but I believe that a lot of these Xperia Bluetooth problems are caused by Sony Ericsson's proprietary Bluetooth stack. I had the problem of it randomly turning BT off, and I was able to fix that with a MortScript I wrote which can be found in this forum.
Kind of frustrating how long it takes to sync 3 e-mails (no attachments) via Bluetooth with my Vista laptop.
Hopefully SE releases a Bluetooth patch that optimizes speed and reliability...seems like it's needed quite bad...

Very poor bluetooth connection

Hi guys,
i recently received my iTech R35 A2DP Bluetooth Headset for my Touch HD which is identical to HTC BH S100 since its only rebranded.
Pairing, controls and everything works fine, but when playing music the connection constantly gets lost for short terms regardless of the distance between the phone and the Headset.
The weird thing about it is, that the headset works perfectly with my friends HD. He even could go away like 10m without any kind of interruption.
I already tried some different settings with HD Tweak but no improvement.
Besides I noticed that overall bluetooth performance with my phone, as it once took about 30 minutes to send a 50MB file, isn't that good.
Thanks for any help!
Update:
I tested the Headset today with two other phones (SE W950i and some Nokia). It worked perfectly so I figure something has to be wrong with my phone. I'll perform a hard reset on the weekend and see if it changes anything. Otherwise I'll have to contact the customer service.
Has anybody here experience with german support. If I had to send the phone in, how does it usually take til u get your phone back?
Well, I just performed the hard reset and it solved the issue. Very strange since I hadn't installed that much programs.
Well, the problem returned and I now figured it out in detail.
There's no correlation with the programs installed.
Once the Bluetooth headset is in the Bluetooth-Device-List as it was connected before the constant lags are there.
If I delete it and re-pair the headset the lags are gone for this one time until the headset got disconnected. Even if I get out of range and return in reach connection is crappy from then on.
Didn't anybody recognize such a strange behaviour too?
I have a similar issue with my Sony Ericsson HBH-IS800 phones.
I thought I'd solved it by re-pairing with the handset, and initially that pairing seemed to last for a while, but now it seems I have to re-pair at least once a day to avoid the stuttering (it's really bad, isn't it?)
Frankly, I'm getting pretty disenchanted with my HD. Every time I discover a tweak which sorts an issue, another issue raises its head. I've lost count of the many hours I've spent trrying to get it to work as it ought to.
Wishing I'd got an iPhone. Okay it's not as good on paper, but at least everything works....
I have to agree the bluetooth is dodgy for me at the best of times in trying to connect to any computer.
Surprisingly, Ive had a good file transfer between my HD and MaxOSX, I can't say the same for Windows XP or Vista where on both accounts it has failed to connect via bluetooth to perform an active sync.

Thanks for your information. At least I'm not the only one with this issue.
Meanwhile I tested this behaviour with my buddies HD and it's the same pattern with his one.
I contacted german support today and will report after their answer.
i've been having the exact same problems with my hd. i would be able to pair it with my landrover, but then the connection would be lost. (there's another thread on this somewhere).
anyway, i tried installing BTRestore and BTRestart along with Mortscript and a custom script to help keep the bluetooth active. however, my problem was not that the bluetooth was turning off, but that the connection would not stay active.
so i installed a custom rom, Dutty's version 1.7, and also installed jetware bluetooth program (www.jetwaremobile.com); so far so good (*fingers crossed*). this is my 3rd day and the bluetooth works great. the phone connects with the car instantly, my phonebook works and i can make and receive calls without losing the connection.
so maybe updating the rom will help you too.
Sorry, it's been a while since HTC answered my questions but since their answer was quite disappointing I had no rush to post it.
Summarized they told me the HTC BH S100 was not compatible with the Touch HD even though I pointed out that it's in compatibility-list of the Diamond and both are running the same Chipset and OS and that it works fine after the first pairing.
As I'm tired of reconfiguring my phone I'll wait some time to flash another ROM. I hope WM 6.5 will be released soon and fix this problem, too.

Bluetooth still doesn't work properly!

My X1 has a very annoying problem with it's Bluetooth. During a call using Bluetooth handsfree the phone will drop the Bluetooth connection, leaving the call connected so annoyingly the caller can hear me cursing the unreliability of my phone. I then have to finish the conversation holding the phone to my ear without the headset.
I called Sony Ericsson, who told me to update the firmware. I did - to R2AA007 - makes no difference. They then said it was a defective phone, so I got a new one sent to me...
...this one has worked great for a month, but yesterday the battery ran almost flat and whilst on a call using handsfree it started playing up again. Now it does it all the time again, even though the phone has been fully recharged and rebooted.
I have been very careful not to change any settings with this second phone, no installs of anything. This is a Vodafone UK phone if it makes any difference. Any idea how I can get this working again? Even without the handsfree connected I can see the display flash 'Bluetooth on' at random intervals indicating that it keeps dropping. Sony Ericsson say that this is not a firmware issue that needs fixing now - what do you guys think?
there are many posts regarding your problem. one thing is for sure, you are not the only one. look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480698 and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=471181 here too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448703 i have my mbw-150 and my hbh-pv712 connected at all times to my x1 the watch is always connected but my headset disconnects randomly as you mentioned even during a call. there is no problem with your phone it's a software issue.
Thanks for the links. What annoys me is that Sony tell me there is no problem and they won't report the bug to their firmware team because "it's been fixed in R2A". This isn't the case, and it doesn't give me much hope for firmware R3A.
Same problem here
I experienced the same problem. Got my X1 in december 2008. Problems started in mid Januari, about a month of good Bluetooth operations, it started to give problems. During a call the Bluetooth connnection is lost, but the call stays open. Can reconnect Bluetooth again during the call, but after some time (sometimes seconds, sometimes tens of seconds) the connection get lost again.
Was glad when the new firmware arrived in Feb 2009. Download it, and the problem was gone fore about one month. Mid march the problem started again. Downloaded (the same) firmeware version again and the problem was gone again for some time. Last week it reappeared again
My conclusion: the Bluetooth bug wasn't corrected in the latest firmware version. Just reinstallation of a new firmeware version resets the phone and the the problem is gone then for some time.....
Seems that there some kind of an internal timer/counter that corrupts good bluetooth operations. I don't want to reinstall "firmware" every time again because I have to reconfigure my phone then every time, which takes a lot of time.
I hope that Sony finally will correct this most irritation bug!!!!
In the mean time I use a Bluetooth restart programme that "turns on" bluetooth every second. This helps moth of the time.
This works for me
In the Bluetooth-Device-Manager tap and hold the stylus on the headset you want to use until a popup is shown, then select use as headset. This worked for me when i have had some problems with one of my headsets supporting more than the "Handsfree-Profile" .
=> better connection under R1, best connection under R2(using R2 since official release)
Good luck WOODY
Hey Guys,
I think i have the solution for the bluetooth problem. i had my Xperia since 11/2008.
i never had a problem with connection when i used my headset. the problem was with the I-Drive disconnection randomly.
I flashed multiple roms from Itje and Jack with the same problem always.
now for the past 2 weeks i have been using Itje V5.5 with no problems what so ever.
the key is to turn bluetooth off in the comm manager everytime you wanna install new programs. i truly believe that installing software with the bluetooth on disrupt something ???
Hope that helps.

Honestly, it make no sense to me....
try it!! it will work ...
@mdshaded
I hope youre kidding, I've had BT problem (BT turns off) since I got this phone last year.
With Itje's WM6.5 RC1 I still have the same problem.
I am not Kidding, I tried all cooked and original roms. I had a pocket PC phone for the past 3 years: Trinity, Kaiser and now the Xperia.
Again my dropped BT Connection were with my Car BT system, never with my Stereo BT headset.
try to hard reset and then install Itje V5.5 and keep your BT off until you are done installing all your programs then turn it on and report back.
Cheers

I had tried more phones (Eten M600, Asus P525, Kaiser, X1), and did a lot researchs and only HTC's one (Kaiser, X1, Diamond, TP, HD ...etc) gives such issue. Not on my Asus P525 and M600. And I had tried many A2DP devices (Sony: DS-205, DS225, DS970, DS980, Clip-D Radio, Jarba (forget what model), JVC-BT1 (car system)) and only HTC devices give me issue.
And your suggestion of turn off bluetooth while software installation make no sense as installation only perform files coping + registry registration which I don't see any relationship from BT issue.
Dear Jack,
I know it does'nt make any sense. but i had this problem on other devices and was always corrected with a cooked rom except with the Xperia..
there is nothing to lose.. just try it..
my phone had no single dropped connection for 2 weeks now.
All the Best.
what bluetooth issue, ive been using hbh ds-200 since ive got the xperia (used on buses, around the house and alot of places) works great and has a further distance than p1i but only has an issue of button compatability. i think it could be the the bluetooth device ur using or the lack of software. may be wrong completley but hear me out ive had it rnning for ages with music on or durig a phone call cause i cant be bothered to pull out of its case to avoid scratching the phone (i know its stupid) but like i said it is working, for me atleast
same problem ...
I'm experiencing the same problem:
my X1 periodically drops the connection to my BMW iDrive while I'm speaking. But, when I'm not in the car I'm using a plantronics voyager 855 and never had a problem ! So there seems to be a problem with specific bluetooth devices.
Before the X1 I had a touch diamond and it worked without any problems with the same iDrive.
Thomas
Dear Thomas,
i am glad that you mentioned your problem with the I-Drive. I did not have a single drop in BT Connection for 2 weeks now. I truly believe that installing some software impairs the BT connection with my I-Drive.
Again never had any problems with Headsets.
My I-Drive Version I believe was newer than V.25.
Cheers.

Bluetooth issues

I have 3 main devices that I pair to my phone via bluetooth: watch/lg tone/car
The watch stays paired with no issues, but the watch is having issues swapping from the lg tones to the car and vice versa.
Anyone found a remedy for this?
As of now, I have to go into the bluetooth settings of the one I don't want to use and deselect media/phone, then go to the other and select media/phone. And even sometimes this takes multiple times to work.
My previous phone (gs7) had no issues swapping from the two.
Hi,
Did you get a solution ? I face the same problem and can't find any solution...
Just to clarify, when you are in your car and want to connect to it, the headphones are turned off, correct?
Having similar issues... Every time I try to connect to my car (stock Subaru WRX), I have to manually connect and it takes several attempts before it connects. Once it connects it usually doesn't drop though. Very frustrating...
Another poster resorted to getting a whole new head unit: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/help/sony-xav-ax100-bluetooth-issues-t3634940

It's not in my car but with the bluetooth device of my motorcycle helmet. The reference is ncom bluetooth kit 3. I have to connect it manually and it takes several attempts before it connects. Sometimes it doesn't connect at all....
I have 2 headset Plantronics Backbeat Pro and Plantronics Backbeat Fit. They both work flawlessly
My Huawei Watch also works.
But my Nokia 616 Car kit wont connect at all.
And my motorcycle hemlet bluetooth kit, Cardo scala rider PACKTALK, connects, but the audio is slowed down to about 80 percent?
Same thing here.
I have been facing problems with a Sony SBH52 Headset and with my Opel Corsa E, stock infotainment system.
It gives me a hard time connecting but when it does it's stable.
I had the same with my gen 1 Moto 360 but after a factory reset to the watch and a reboot it's stable.

I had the same issue with my TSX. I did some research and cleared the cache. Worked like a charm afterwards. Did not have the issue one week since doing that

Ahem, I seem to be unable to find bluetooth in my app settings. Can you please give me a hint?
It's been driving me crazy these days with my SBH-52 and I want to try this too.
Thanks!
P.S.
I'll also give it a shot with a plantronics pro headset I have to see if it does the same.
Bluetooth profiles implementations, even though they passed certification, are not always made equal! So don't end up pulling your hair if a certain BT device doesn't play nice with another.
Just as an example... Head Unit X had big issues with the initial contacts sync, right after pairing with Samsung phones (already known to sometimes play around some other standards). It would only work after several reconnects. After several weeks of debugging (poor development guys) and reproduction test (poor testing guys) it was concluded that it is a phone issue caused by some wrong timing delays in the process of exchanging information between the HU and the phone. Samsung was informed and the ticket was internally closed.
I have similar problem with Bluetooth Earbuds. Phone simple doesn't "see" the Earbuds. But strange - it can see other Bluetooth devices and other devices can see Earbuds.
I'm sure this is a OnePlus 5 software problem.
Version OxygenOS 4.5.10
i have somhow issue as urs, i have Bluetooth pad lock and android watch, it sometimes connected and sometimes not, i do believe its software issue, im on 4.5.11
Yes, it is strange. After some restarts and on/offs connection suddenly appears

Bluetooth problem

Hello to everyone.
From when i bought it the op8pro has some problem with the bluetooth. Is like if the device can connect to one device only. I have a fossil 5 gen, one fiesta mk8 with android auto and the bluetooth headset but is like if the bluetooth has some problem to connect to two or one devices. For example every time my car doesnt connect to the phone automatically and today when i was to the gym my headset doesnt connect automatically too. My previous note 10 pro was able to connect without any problem... Someone has some problem with the bluetooth? Thanks
I have another problem. Every time that i enter in my car the device is connect to android auto but if i want to play an audio from whatsapp i have to tap a lot of time on the play botton.!!!???why
I see this same issue, I'd say 80-90% of the time (the other 10-20%, it "just works", which is truly odd, given the protocol).
For example, I use some bone-conducting open-air headphones, while cycling (long time road cyclist), and sometimes I want to connect my Garmin Edge 1030, to download a route, when I'm out.
Good luck, even upon returning, I'm often sitting in the garage, trying 20+ times (after shutting my headphones off, even), to try and download my ride-data, for the day. Sometimes it requires rebooting both devices, flushing the Bluetooth app-cache, and the Garmin app-cache, and then it'll work, that's perhaps 40% of the time.
For another 40%, it will NOT connect, what-so-ever, across multiple reboots and app-cache flushes, period (I tend to give up at around the 20+ attempt mark, depending).
The last 20%, it works, perfectly, as you'd expect, and as my OP7 Pro did, I can't recall a single BT connectivity issue, with it, either solo (Garmin) or with headphones concurrently.
I've filed bugs with OP (along with NUMEROUS other radio bugs, like the fact you can't connect to a 5G-mobile signal, if you're connected to a WiFi signal, on the INO2025 model, bug filed, trace-logs submitted, including pointing out log-lines where the radio(s) fail).
Unfortunately, with the Bluetooth issues, it will not repro, if I use the OP debug-mode, which is how they want to receive logs (and how I've submitted many bugs, previously), so I'm at a loss, short of finding a hardware Bluetooth debug module (I used to work on h/w and s/w boundary driver stuff, so I've used a h/w BT debugger before, but not for some years, and have no access to one, currently).
OP seems to just ignore the bugs, at that point, when I can't provide the logs, they pretty much abandon the bug-thread, so I'm not sure how they're going to get some of these resolved (I've noted that the debug-mode seems to introduce some latency, or similar, that prevents repro, no response to that, what-so-ever).
I have reset the radio-stack, a couple of times, and did one full factory-reset (shortly after getting the phone, about 1 month back now), with no real change in results, for reference.
I feel like I'm back in the late-90's, when Bluetooth was super-flaky. on most devices, in the 1.x and 2.x days.
Not exactly a "flagship phone experience", or even a decent budget phone Bluetooth experience, for this day and age...
I'm open to ideas on how to debug further, I'm really more of a storage and display guy, and memory-management, in terms of the bulk of my dev/debug skills, communication protocols were something I did on the fringe, of sorts, when they overlapped, or similar.
