[Q] Sprint Galaxy S5 Not Powering On - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone please give me some advice on what to do. My phone is less than 3 months old and will not power on. It doesn't do anything, not even the vibration it usually does. I've tried plugging it into the charger but it doesn't even have the charging light on. It was working fine and just stopped. I pulled the battery out and put it back in but nothing it working. If If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very grateful! Thanks!!!

what were you doing at the time
What were you doing at the time the phone stopped working? Did you try charging the battery on an external charger?

As the poster above suggested, what were you doing recently? We are looking for clues as to what happened? Did you yank on the power cord, drop the phone, et cetera?
Make sure that your battery isn't in backwards in the phone and try using a different cable to charge the phone. If it still doesn't charge, then borrow a friends external charger.. or even the (charged) battery out of their S5 for a few seconds to see if your phone will turn on. We're trying to differentiate between a dead battery and all other problems.
If you still have no luck, then remove the battery for ten seconds, then replace (the presumably charged) battery in your phone. Then press and hold the volume down key. Then also press and hold the home key, then the power key. After about five seconds, you should see the phone start to the "download screen". If so, post here for further guidance.
If you phone is non responsive to a borrowed battery and the download mode described above, then you should seek warranty service with your carrier. A three month old phone should still be under warranty.

I was talking on it and hung up. Then, I tried to use it about 5 mins later and it wouldnt turn back on. What do you mean by "external charger"?? Sry, I'm not very tech savy lol! The only charger I have is the one that came with my phone. Thank you for replying! ☺

Can you get into recovery ( volume up + menu +power button) or download mode (volume down + menu + power button)?
You may read this article http://www.technobezz.com/samsung-galaxy-s5-not-charging/, hope it helps.

I tried the volume down + home + power and it didn't work. I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to make a trip to the store but it's looking like I'm going to have to.

It may well be an electrical hardware issue, it doesn`t look like a software problem to me. Good luck and i hope its fixed soon

It is looking like a hardware issue. If you are positive that the battery is charged.. i.e. if the battery turns your husband's phone on, then we ask what is different about your phone? Most software issues would be bypassed by starting a phone in download mode, which is why I asked you to try that.
Have a quick look at the battery "fingers" or pins on your phone. Those are the gold or silver coloured pins that line up with the gold or silver tabs on the end of your battery. Do they all appear to be the same? There isn't one that is bent out of alignment or shorter than the others where it might not be making contact with the battery?
And why not try one more test? See if the phone will start up in "recovery mode" this time.
Pull the battery out of the phone for ten seconds. Then replace it. Now in order.. press and hold the volume up button, then press and hold the home button as well. And last, press and hold the power button. Continue holding all three for ten seconds or until you see the phone screen turn on.
If that still doesn't work, my best guess is that you may have accidentally banged and damaged the power button. If it was me.. I'd try pressing really hard and wiggling the power button for a few seconds to see if you can cajole the phone to power on at least once and confirm the problem.
But that is about all that we can do. If you can't get the phone to power up with a known good battery.. then th store needs to check it with test equipment to narrow down what the hardware fault is.

Well, I guess I bricked my HD2

My HD2 doesn't turn on, doesn't go into boot loader, and cant soft reset. Can I officially say i bricked my HD2? And i cant even get it replaced because the camera is somehow cracked, and that supposedly "voids" the warranty.
And Im quite sure you need a JTAG to fix it, correct?
if it was a 51 radio brick, then yea, JTAG is it.
actually, it wasnt a 51. radio brick. I installed the Eugenia Rom through CustomUU while my phone was connected, it installed fine, and then it wouldn't turn on?
wont turn on at all? nothing? black screen? no charge light?
check the battery pins.
Nope, nothing at all. And by checking the battery pins, what should i be looking at?
just to see theyre all in a nice neat line, two one two, none bent up/down. it happens a lot.
other than a 51 radio (or 2.04.50 and 2.05.50 radios), battery pins or a discharged battery are the only reason i can think that would cause complete dead phone.
hm, I think I'm on to something here. When i plug my phone into my computer, it installs a driver. I forgot what its called, but that's all it installs. I cant access the phones files, but i thought i would let you know, maybe it could help me in the long run.
qualcomm? yea, the radio bricks show up as a qualcomm device.
try leaving the battery out for a while, (half hour) then plug in usb (wall charger, not pc) and then put the battery back in. this will stop the phone trying to run on like it normally does when you apply power when the battery is in (thus draining even the dregs of power, possibly affecting the charge circuits ability to start charging, , not very common, but not unheard of either), and with a bit of luck the charge light will appear and all will be well.
gotta go, 3am
good luck.
Thank you so much man,I'll try... ill get back to you about it tomorrow.
Erggg, nope, it didnt work =( Thanks for your time, and thank you for trying to help.
how old is it?
is it warm on the back bottom part of the phone?
Put it in the fridge for 15mins, then try to boot up.
Also see if you can try and put your battery in some one elses HD2 or charge your battery in their phone.
Its pretty hard to kill your HD2.
(i just dropped my HD2 in for a service/repair as my motherboard/cpu was overheating.- had to flash stock rom and spl back though)
I got it two weeks ago Its not warm, but ill try it in the fridge...... and I just did that a couple hours ago, we switched battery's and still no luck.
Refrigerator did not work either =/
can u do a hard reset with the volume up buttons and the power key? reformating the device to default?
Pull out ur battery, press and hold the soft reset button, hile holding down the soft reste button place ur battery back in. While still holding down the soft reset button pres and hold the volume down + the on/off swith and see if it will boot. U might need a friend to help u with holding down al the buttons. It worked for me...
Read ALL the earlier replies. Mine seems "cracked": battery won't charge in phone, via USB cables (2 cables, 2 batteries - one new & fully charged, two USB power souurces, including a car's 12v DC source).
Did all the above hard & soft resets, etc. Nothing works. Phoned HTC AUSTRALIA - MUST send it hundreds of miles (or kms) away to the original Telstra dealer, since HTC does not allow any other type of warranty claim in Australia.
On the phone's pins that contact the battery - they are flexible: up, down, in & out. Being "in-line" does not mean they work.
Not sure why the hardware crashed. Have not upgrade ROM or Android. Won't recharge the battery in-phone with SIM, micro-SD in nor out of the phone.
Wanting for a separate external battery charger (only a few $$) from eBay. Might take the phone to a dealer, and see if they can get it to recharge the battery via the USB cable.

Nexus 7 won't turn on

It seems there are already several threads about this seemingly common issue with this tablet, but I've tried the normal checks and still can't get any life out of my dad's nexus 7 whatsoever.
I've found several threads stating it's just a loose battery, but in this case it isn't. I've checked absolutely every single connection I can get to without removing the void if removed bits, and can't find anything suspect. However it still won't turn on, won't charge, etc. It's not a faulty charger or cable either, we've all got android in my immediate family and we can't get any life out of it with any lead or charger. It was simply working one day, it was turned off the way it always is once my dad had finished using it, and now it simply won't come back on again.
I also saw some people say to get it into bootloader mode by holding volume down and power straight after plugging it in, but that too does nothing whatsoever?
Does anyone know of anything else I can try, short of sending it back to Asus?
How long have you had it?
This sounds like something that should be addressed as a warranty situation, as anything else may be kludgy at best, and may fail again just after your warranty runs out.
I wouldn't really waste any more time.
JMnsHO....
My dad has had it about half a year, maybe a little more. But he bought it from Comet, who no longer exist since they went under just after Christmas, so he can't return it to them now. Unless it'd just go straight to Asus instead.
I had exactly the same issue.......I fixed it by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting which by the sound of your post you have already tried.......you should be able to go straight to Asus for repair.......good luck....
Sent from my Evo 3D GSM using xda app-developers app
After probably 30 days it would need to go back to ASUS anyway.
As I'd said, I wouldn't waste more time fussing with it.
They'll take care of it and still preserve the balance of the warranty.
If you messed with it too much, you may find yourself with none at all, and on the hook for the cost of the repair.
Make the call..
Well I've not done anything that shows I've been in there like I say, so any manufacturer warranty should still be intact. Same goes for the software too, not rooted, on the standard rom and kernel, etc.
I was just hoping I could fix it for my dad without having to send it off.
Not yet, but anything else would be more 'intrusive'.
How long have you been working on it?
Not long, only 10 minutes here or there to see if I could find something loose. I might check the voltage of it's battery to see if it's flat, and also check to see if any power is getting to the battery while charging. That'll help prove if the battery or it's control board is dead or not.
Just checked the battery over. It's a 3.7v battery according to the label, and my multimeter shows 3.7v, so the battery is fine with no loose connections. At the connector for the power button ribbon cable, I get the 1.8v that should trigger the tablet to power up when the power button is pressed, and the power button is good too, only showing continuity when pressed. Again, no loose connections. But the bloody thing still won't turn on.
Any more ideas?
When you say that you "tried all the normal checks", does that include all of the fixes listed in the sticky dedicated to this subject?

Yes, your thread is about a faulty or loose battery. As I've said, it's not a loose connection and I've now tested the battery too. Unless you can think of something that I've missed?

That sticky has all of the well-researched methods of addressing the collection of related issues (won't turn on/won't turn off/battery status). It is not only about a faulty or loose battery - there's much more.
Give it a read and let me know if there's a fix in there for you.

If your able to get to bootloader maybe try to power off then let it charge for awhile then boot, or hold the power button for a good min
It won't turn on at all, so it can't get into the bootloader. Tried already.

I know you tried almost everything in the box, but when you plug it in the wall and press and hold the power button do you see the screen light up but still black?
If yes ( hopefully ) then continue holding power button then press VOL down til arrow pointing with START appears. Cycle through with VOL down til you see power off and select.
After it shuts down unplug from wall and replug and let it sit for a long awhile
If this didn't help at all sorry......good luck....warranty?

Nothing happens whatsoever mate, even while plugged into the charger. Tried the original charger, my s4 charger, my old HTC chargers, from the pc via USB, etc. None of them make any difference.
Got a feeling it might be the motherboard, as it has power. Can't be the display since I've tried getting a logcat from it after holding the power button for a while to make sure it would have turned on. ADB just kept saying "waiting for device" as if it wasn't plugged in, confirming it isn't even turning on.
Can anyone think of anything I've missed?

Can the pogo pins be used to charge? bit of a long shot and you`d need to buy/borrow a dock of some sort. Definitely sounds like a hardware failure issue.

Did you used Original Samsung charger? if not that might be the problem.
Your phone is probably damaged internally since you said it overheated.
Go to your nearest samsung store or carrier and ask there. hope your warranty isnt voided yet.
Good luck.

what might be the problem? how much will i pay if they fix my phone?

depends on samsung maybe its for free.
The charger isnt compatible with your device and maybe it overcharged and overheated the device.

Is my phone done for? (Cant bot/charge/enter download mode/no response)

So few days ago my phone suddenly turned off and kept rebotting itself (It would reach the samsung galaxy logo and then turn off). I thought it was a battery issue so I removed it for 30mins and tried again, worked fine for an hour then problem started again. I left it over night to charge in the wall socket incase.
Same issue next morning and no solution.
I replaced the battery with a friends and the same issue happened on my phone (i used my battery on his and it works fine on his) so I removed the issue of battery itself.
That evening the phone then just stopped responding at all. It would not respond to pressing the power button (no load, no vibration).
Tried entering download mode using vol down + home + power. Nothing. (So cant use Odin)
Tried entering recovery mode using vol up + power. Nothing
Tried hard reset using vol up + power + home. Nothing.
(All the steps I used a fully charged battery from another s4 phone and removed/re-entered before trying again)
So I check online and notice some people having issues with power button, but even if that is the case - wouldn't my phone still charge? I dont even get the battery chargning icon on the screen when plugged in either PC or wall socket.
I opened it up and changed the motherboard with another samsung s4 and my original problem mobo still does not load on the new s4. (My new mobo worked on the old device though).
The ONLY response I got was when I used my original mobo on new s4 device and plugged it into PC, it popped connect and then disconnect sound and thats it (doesnt recognize usb port).
What are my options apart from getting another motherboard or going to a shop for a JTAG repair? I was contemplating just removing the power button and seeing if that helps in getting a charge response lol
Well your power button is broken for sure. Replace it and then test it.

It always takes a few seconds before it starts to charge. So maybe the device reboots before reaching the charging phase. I'm guessing though. But since your problems started with power button issues it would be the logic place to start.
The part only costs a few dollars.
Well I'm exactly in the same situation as you, since this morning on a i9505 running JFLTPE-GPE 5.0 ROM. The screen appears for 1 second or 2 (Samsung logo) then it powers off . I need to remove the battery to try something else.
Same behaviour, even for recovery mode, so Odin is not an option.
I thought that changing some kernel settings have caused that, but as I just put them back to default values, it should not happen.
I didn't have some power button issues, it was just powered off at my wake up this morning. In your case, does your phone vibrate and power up instantly when you put the battery ? That's the case for me, but it should not be the normal.
My problem is actually solved : indeed, it was the power button. I removed all the screws and played a little with this power button (air dust, etc...), enough to make it start correctly !
I managed to do some backups, and now I hope that it won't break again.

Yeah, that happened before (automatically powering up, vibrating, going to samsung logo and then shutting down and doing it again until I removed battery - putting the battery back in with start it up without pressing the power button).
When it was in that phase, the one thing that did work was doing a soft reset (home+power+down vol, and then holding just power) - however that only worked for like an hour before it went back to the restart phase.
However now it doesn't respond to anything at all. (Any kind of response I got was when I put that mobo in another s4 and plugged in usb, which just gave a connected/disconnect sound on w7, no life on the phone itself).
Be very careful as to what you do, I suggest you do NOT leave the battery on it and charge it (which was the last thing I did before it went unresponsive) - my guess is phone went haywire trying to turn on/off continously.

Black Screen Unresponsive

I got a new update for my phone and after it finished applying, my phone won't turn on. The screen is black but when i plug it into my computer i can hear the usb jingle. I tried all the button combinations but its unresponsive.

Did you take the phone in for service? What did they do to fix it, if they fixed it... I have a dead phone and need some answers if they are out there. I'm looking through every post that has anything to do with this subject and coming up blank - just like my phone's screen!
Part of my issue is that I had a shut down from out of nowhere on NYE. I was able to bring it back up with the power, volume up, and Bixby combo the next day. Foolishly I assumed it was a fluke and went right back to using my phone just as I had before. I saw an article about disabling the Bixby button, which seemed to be the thing to do... When the phone shut down the next day again, I couldn't bring it back because I no longer have a Bixby button for the combo. It's been down since Jan. 2, and I'm at my wit's end. Can you please update your phone status? I'd appreciate it if you can!

Lol disabling the bixby button in software does not mean you can't trigger download mode. That level of software has no idea what packages you disabled ?

Happened with me last night, bunch of updates and then black. I was gonna send to warranty, then someone told me Power + Bixby + Vl down and it worked. How can I find out what did it
When I called Samsung, they were clueless how to get it started again as we walked through all the button combinations they had. It was fully charged when it stopped working, both times. The second time it took me a few days of trying on my own, calling, Samsung and then going into their repair store.
They took it back to work on it after I explained what was going on. He tried several things and came out and told me it may need a replacement but wanted to try one more thing. Hours later, he came back and said he hooked it up to a charger and it had been dead. Once it started charging, it showed the green battery, lightning bolt and blinking circle. It still didn't start normally, but the three button combo worked at around 20%. I'm not sure if he tried before that, but it came back on.
I've discovered that my handset is extremely sensitive to cold temperatures and shuts down. I'm in the Midwest and have been working outside in a tent like structure. I listen to music, books, or podcasts while I'm working. Many times, I will put my phone on a shelf while charging but still listening. The phone shuts off and first I have to wait for it to warm up, then it has to drain the fully charged battery, and then I start charging it again. After the first time on my own, I did the button combo right after it started taking a charge and it worked.
I'm not sure if a replacement phone is the way to go, because if this is common on the S8, I might end up with another dud that would just frustrate me more. I like the phone, but this quirk is annoying.
Last night my phone was charging and accessible fine. This morning I have a green light at the top showing I assume that it's charged but the screen is totaly black. nothing I do brings up any screen. I tried all the button combos I tried plugging it in to the charger and nothing shows any kind of reaction. I tried plugging it into my computer and the computer said it was setting up device QUSB_BULK. Then said it was set up but even after it supposedly complete I could not find the device. What the hell?
S8 Black Screen
Is the green light staying on? This happened to me on one of the many shut down times I experienced. I think I narrowed it down to my phone not liking cold temperatures, but I don't know if that is your phone's issue. It hasn't happened since last winter, so I haven't needed to do any of this for quite some time, but I'm trying to remember all of the steps I took.
I'm gonna suggest getting the battery drained back down to zero. In order to drain the battery when it's black screened, I kept trying all the button combos repeatedly for, it seems like, maybe three or more days... I couldn't tell if it was dead on several of the occasions, but when I had an indication light, it went off after days of doing any and all button combos, just to drain what battery I could.
Once you do that, while keeping it out of any extreme temps, (if there have been any) then plug in the adapter that came with it, using a good quality USB-C cord and charge it again and see if the charging screen comes up. (The Fast Adapter Charger that connects with USB 3.o is the best to use. Samsung wanted me to use the original cord, but I have no idea where that is! I just used a good quality cord.)
If that doesn't do the trick, then it's not the same issue I had, and I wish you luck on finding out and getting it fixed! Don't forget to update the site for others to find out if your tricks work... (You can still try this, but it may be just to rule it out as a possibility.) Try draining it more than you first did, and then plug it in again to see if it takes a change.
If it is taking a charge again after draining and plugging in your power cord, wait until you get back up to at least 20% and then try the three button start (Bixby / Power / Volume Up at the same time) and make sure you hold them for up to 30 seconds or until it kicks on. One time, I think I held it for almost a full minute. But it did take the change, restarted on the three button combo restart, and didn't have any new issues from its down time.
If this works for you, come back and tell us! If not, come back and report what you try and what the results are.
I really hope that helps! Good luck!

S8 with OtterBox case (and screen protector back in the box. It just interfered with my phone's touch screen responsiveness.)

Sounds like a system problem, you can try to use the button to force a reboot, if there is no response, you can try to reinstall the system, if this still can not be solved, then you may need to replace the new screen, you can go to Witrigs to see Note 8 screen, they There is an original Note 8 Super AMoled screen for sale. The price is also relatively low.
