Gauging Interest in 4.4.4 Port for T-Mobile Users - Droid Ultra General

Purpose of this thread is to gauge interest in a port of TMobile and ATT moto x software. This should address the infamous LTE bug found in our devices

Interested

Although the offer is very tempting but I think active notifications are better than LTE but then again, I get my phone me tomorrow to start using it on AT&T.

Well I wont be able to say for sure about active until their updates are released. You'll see very quickly that the LTE bug is very annoying.

From what everyone said, you can just disable LTE and use HSPA+, right? I know HSPA+ in DFW maxes out at a little under 10Mbps I think and I'm wondering if that would be enough. I haven't done any Roms on my moto x so I'm not sure what all is required for active display. Does it have to do with kernel and rom difference?

i think the active display fault is something you change, because the last time i flashed moto x build, everything worked, no offense...
something you flash for the physical buttons to work screws up active notifications...

This will allow those with unlocked BLs to run full T-Mobile firmware on their max and effectively eliminate the LTE handoff issues.

New 4.4.3 Build Released. Includes the google dialer!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783370

Debating on applying the changes from the new build to the 4.4.2 port. This would effectively eliminate the active display bug for that port and it will still be based of VZW firmware vice the 4.4.3 being based off T-Mobile. This would eliminate the need for VZW users to change the modem selection on boot while having the new dialer and whatever else we missed in our update. What do you think @bigv5150 and @Caseyk621 interested?

I'm on att, so no LTE for me. Any benefit to running moto x firmware over Verizon? Phone is pretty smooth and I'm pretty happy with it as is, seems like a lot of work to get the better dialer. Maybe there's an easier way? I bet running moto x software will be useful when they get L and we're stuck on kit Kat

You can get the dialer on the stock maxx firmware but you will have two and IIRC it will default to the maxx dialer when actually using the phone.
The major advantage is for T-Mobile users. This fixes a crucial LTE to Voice handoff issue for them.
other than that, its just little odds and ends.
Why don't you get LTE on att? They run a different band?

I thought AT&T had band 4 LTE in some areas? From what I've heard or read, T-Mobile LTE works out of the box since they use the same band as Verizon or something but AT&T only uses it in some places. Not sure on the details but if my area has LTE that works, I may have to try this ROM out. Not sure on Maxx dialer vs yours but it seems like you've got it all figured out and worked out all the quirks. Thanks for sharing your work. I just hope I can get the bootloader unlocked on mine or maybe it will work great OOTB. We will see this weekend.

I have the google dialer now the only time it reverts to stock is when I make the call. The search function works so does caller ID. Plus with the 4.4.4 update there is no longer a need for an activity launcher the blue phone icon is placed in the app drawer. Here are the apps email you just install like any other apk the google dialer has to be flashed. After flashing just use it nothing else to do. So install them check it out and tell me if you think it is worth your time. I think not the other ports were so we could go up an OS not stay the same. Also the google dialer will update just like any other app I'm not sure if it was through play store or aptood ccan't remember. But there is an update available after you flash this one.

I'm not sure if it won't have Verizon bloatware since it's only getting released on Verizon. The GSM Moto X Developer Edition definitely won't have Verizon bloatware.
The Dev edition will be identical to the regular phone the only difference is that you can unlock the boot loader. It will have the same bloat we have a Google play edition would be vanilla android.
This really makes me mad. I feel like I am punished for buying early. :crying:
Anyone want to buy a consumer edition for $600?

This is exactly correct.
Developer editions are IDENTICAL to the retail versions of the devices with the only exception that the bootloaders are unlocked. All bloat will still be there and it will still be the lightly skinned version of android that we're used to.

My 14 day return window expired 1 day before they announced the developer edition (and I researched ahead of time - everybody thought they would do a Moto X dev edition, but nobody was thinking they'd do a Droid Maxx developer edition). I'm not that upset though because we have root now and that's what I really needed. Beyond root I'm not so sure custom ROMs would be as desirable since we can't exactly expect Cyanogenmod to support all the unique features of the Maxx.
The only reason I want the DE is for custom kernels.

So... is it worth getting a DE phone? Or is it more useful for people who actually do Android Development. I'd like to be able to unlock and root... but not sure if its worth the cash.

Depends if you want to change the operating system a lot switching roms I would say go with the dev edition it is better you can load a kernel not use ss and kexec to run roms. If you just want root well we have root and hash is working on ss (very close now) so you can flash roms.if you want. I don't think it is worth spending 650.00 for the phone vs.299.00 its more than double the price and you cant subsidize it as far as I know it is a straight purchase I believe. I doubt I will flash to many roms anyway this o.s runs great and I can customize it with xposed so my phone looks like it is running a custom rom, with out the bugs. My bioinic was so laggy when ever I ran a rom the only ones that ran right were based of the stock build and kernel. So why bother like I said xposed makes it so any dummy can create a custom looking rom in 5 min. Granted you wont get all the bells and whistles but I never used all the pie holo stuff anyway.
Well I found a buyer for my (locked) Droid MAXX and I ordered the Developer Edition yesterday. Hasn't shipped yet.

Couldn't some dev out there figure a way to implant whats on the dev version to a consumer version? Is it not software that they would be dealing with? Or it also hardware based?

The fun stuff (kernels, system updates, etc., for example) are blocked in a signed bootloader unless the updates are signed with Motorola's private key. The bootloader will not allow the update to flash unless it is signed with the private key that matches the bootloader's public key, which only Motorola has. The unlocked bootloader simply removes the requirement that updates must be signed. Having an unlocked phone gives you no way to determine the private key.

I can not get any version of this to work on my Nexus 6. I tried every single one of them from the original post. Tried both on and off wireless.
Called AT&T and verified that VVM had not been shut off on my account when I transferred from my Sammy Galaxy S3 to my Nexus 6 too.

What version do you have now?
When I go to the Play Store it tells me that I already have it installed. I am on Republic Wireless though so that may make a difference in the supplied version.
Mine is still called Touchless Control but when I look at it in Settings->Apps it shows as version 4.3.11.1 which is what the current version at the Play Store is listed as too.

It is the same apk as yours. You need to be rooted for everything to work.
@Legacystar
Thank you for your reply. I should have mentioned that we are still on 4.4.2 at Republic Wireless. From aviwdoowks link it looks like [rooted] 4.4.4 users are having success with side loading this but not 4.4.3 and below. However since you got it through the Play Store and didn't side load it I'm not sure if the two situations are comparable. Surely the P.S. didn't check your phone for root access and standard app updates from Moto don't/shouldn't require it.
At this point I am out of my depth here as I am unable to make meaningful tests of the app if it doesn't mesh well with the 4.4.2 ROM. I may be able to reflash my ROM if things go wrong but because it is a Franken-ROM that allows RW users to have write protection turned off and it also keeps the old 4.4.4 bootloader in place it is more of a project and risk than I am willing to take on at the moment.
Hopefully there is something in avi's linked discussion that will help you.
I believe I had the motovoice update on 4.4.2 from the play store on Republic before I nuked my phone yesterday messing around with it. It may be that it is a staged roll-out from the play store, so be patient; it is coming.

Uninstall the new app, touchless will show up then retrain voice. Clear defaults if needed.
I just received an update of moto voice via play store and there is nothing new. Not a single feature of the 2014 X made it to the 2013 (yet)
I just got the update. I am on RW 4.4.2 and all it said was it was adding support for the Moto 360 so my Moto X won't trigger its touchless control when connected to the smart watch. Strange, you have the new Moto X 2014 Voice version (6.x.x).
It's not made for 2013 Moto X. You should have the last 15sept2014 version instead (4.3.14.1)
Take a look to this thread
just a quick question i had unstalled this app 3 times each time i couldn't get through setting it up. it seemed to malfunction at the point where i should train the hotword detection. anybody else? also is this a apk from the new moto x?

I honestly think they've put moto x 2013 users on the backburner. A day after the 2014 comes out they said that the moto x 2013 owners will get the software updates. They weren't specific to which features but as it is, I can't think of one feature that the 2013 crew got from the 2014 software updates other than the name changes. I guess they are more focused on updating for lollipop right now and the turbo and the nexus and the 2014 moto. Yeah I'm a little bitter =P

Firmware update for Note 4 due this week

I'm working with Gear VR and had reason to ask the right questions to my contact at Samsung and here's what he had to say today about a firmware update that I need for development (but everyone will get), "I'm hearing the Verizon update is supposed to be available in the next few days or so"
Just thought I'd share since it's rare we have reliable, official announcement before the OTA's flow. To be clear, I don't know if this update will be Android L. I DO know that it will have the bits needed to support Gear VR on retail devices.
He's also working on getting me the ROM sooner, but I'm not sure if I will be allowed to distribute. Maybe others will be getting it early for the same reasons though so if you want a decent reason to hope....

I agree. We are unrooted and locked; what does it matter.

Why's that? Because it's new?
AT&T note 4 got an OTA update today...
What did the AT&T update consist of? Minor stuff or Android L?

If I'm not mistaken, HD voice something and bloatware.

Thanks. I hate updates like that. I hope that whatever we get from Verizon is different but I have a funny feeling we will be getting a useless update as well.

Guy in the droid life site commented that after the update on his AT&T note 4 update, the recents button was faster and more responsive. I hope it's really true and us Verizon users see the same improvement. That lag is the biggest gripe I have with this phone right now. Yeah, it's that good of a phone!

Only lag I have is the recent apps cap. Takes a second or two sometimes to load up my list of recent apps. Not sure if this is related with ART though. Any thoughts?

We WILL get Gear VR support ( the whole point of this thread). Beyond that, I can't say and don't care much. If I was fixed on root or L, I wouldn't be running the Note 4 given how good Samsung is getting at locking the boot loader. In fact, If not for my VR development, I might have purchased my first Nexus device despite the lack of SD (or grabbed the G3).
By the way, why are people still spamming with "sent from my weAlreadyKnowAndDontCare using irrelevantAndAnnoyingApp"? That's so Outlook 2000

This is the first Android phone for me where I am not terribly concerned if I don't get an unlocked bootloader. Root would be nice but it's not a deal breaker for me. I am looking forward to Android L on this phone.
As for my Tapatalk signature, I rarely post in forums so I forgot the signature was even there! I more or less read forums these days.
Thanks for posting the information!

Is this OTA really worth taking seeing as we seem not to be close to attaining root?

Yeah that's the only lag for me as well. I'm not running on ART and I have it so I think it doesn't matter there. Just need a software update to fix that issue then this phone will be perfect!

Agreed. Switched back to JIT Dalvik and it Was still persistant. Hopefully this update will tweak a lot of things.
It's Friday. I wish there will be something during the weekend. Really want the HD calling

Looking for LG stock calendar app

Does anyone have the stock LG calendar app working on an LS997 variant? I can install the app fine, but it crashes upon start. It would be really nice to have since I like how it shows the actual date on the icon.

It's the last of the stock apps I'd *really* like to get working on the V20. Messages, email (not exchange tho, boo), gallery and music all work for me, so it would be nice...
Thanks!

It's part of the LS997 ROM released by Team DevDigitel. I should be able to get an APK for you but it's probably just as easy to extract it from the ROM. With LG stock apk's YMMV.

I know this apk works since I just pulled it from a ROM that has it included and it was working with the ROM. There must be some sort of dependency that is keeping it from running. I'm going to see if I can do some reverse engineering on it to find out what that dependency is. If anyone can save me a step, I'd be happy to hear what that dependency is!
Did you ever figure this out because I would like to do this myself. Also, you mentioned you had the stock messaging app working. Would you mind sharing the apk and any special instructions not covered by this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/themes/stock-music-app-to-att-version-t3552963
Also, please share the calendar apk as well even though it hasn't worked for you. Maybe I'll have better luck.

Just saw this--I posted links to all of the working LG apps for LS997 unrooted phones somewhere. Once I find them, I'll link to it here.
UPDATE: Messaging App https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8dcSlY-Ip1-NmZfVmRrOXczUWc
Calendar App https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8dcSlY-Ip1-RUViZzJsNkJUMVU
Let me know if you get Calendar working!
UPDATE 2: I couldn't get the Messaging app to work this time. Not sure if it has anything to do with updating from ZV5 to ZV6...or maybe just that I'm no longer rooted?

I was able to get them installed but unfortunately both crash on launch. Thanks anyway. Maybe somebody else will get it to work and share their process here.
<RANT>I just don't understand why a service provider would choose to remove these apps in the first place. If not for the Google Voice integration I would have ditched Sprint years ago.</RANT>
Installed Calendar and it's working fine for me.

You're not on Sprint (lucky you). For some dumb reason, hardly any of the STOCK LG APPS work on an LG PHONE. Makes perfect sense. I understand the desire for the carrier to make the phone "theirs" or to try to go with a more "vanilla Google" experience, but if I want to install LG apps on an LG phone, that should not be more difficult than rocket surgery.
My turn to rant >>> Unfortunately Sprint has the best coverage where I live and their prices are much better than Verizon's. Next time I'll just get an unlocked device. I would love to just root the phone in order to run stock apps, as I had before, but everytime I do there seems to be a malfunction and my phone ends up bricked (not from installing incompatible ROMs or kernels, I think I just flash the phone too many times?). Not to mention Sprint (and AT&T) has conveniently decided to not make the KDZ/TOT files available to the public. Let's not even mention the ridiculous static boot screen...

Someone in another thread suggested it might be a missing framework. I don't know enough about mobile development to be able to say that he was on the right path or not, but it seems logical to me. It's probably something buried deep in the system that would only be accessible by having root permissions.
I do wonder about the ability to achieve this through a terminal app and changing some permissions as the SystemUI Tuner app does in order to change status bar icons without root. Wish someone would work on that, or I wish I had enough knowledge to do so myself... oh well.

Yeah neither of the apps will work on non rooted phones... You can't add the other files to system without it.... And to be honest the Android messaging app sprint includes is better then the stock lg one...

Serious question: how does the method used by SystemUI Tuner work without root, and why wouldn't this method work for non-rooted phones and stock apps? If you're not familiar, the app requires non-rooted phones to use ADB to send a shell command 'pm grant com.xxx.xxx android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS' and 'android.permission.DUMP'. Perhaps there is code in the app itself to trick the system into thinking it has root using these commands?? You would know better than me...
I'm waving the white flag on this, however I am curious to know how that works. I might consider another carrier in the future however. Preferrably one that doesn't cripple stock apps.
