camera software - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so i installed optimus g3 rom and its a really great rom but the g3 camera software is absolutely terrible. theres barely any modes or controls. How do i use a night mode if theres no night mode? is it automatic on the G3? The rom has the g2 camera software also but i was hoping for more from the G3 software. Anyway was a good app to use that has alot of shooting modes or controls and still retains very good image quality ?

I believe your right. On the actual G3 there is hardware to support alot of the various missing functions we're used to. It's automatic. Like auto HDR mode and laser focus.
You can download Xdabbebs camera mod for the G3 Rom however it seems like the Optimus G3 had it built in already by default. That's the perfect solution.

LgCamera 6.4

Hi,
Is anyone there who tried LgCamera 6.4 on LG G2? If yes what is your experience? Could you record 1080p60fps video?
I tried and tested few functions and so far it works perfectly on LG G2 too. Also It shots pictures without any sharp blur or any other dirt. Only the pure clear picture which is unbelievable in this modern world. It doesn't want to impress the user with too sharped photos on mobile screen but pictures look good on monitor and TV as well.
Hi,
Is it this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677645
If not, can you post some infos, a link?

Yes, it is.
I hadn't seen this camera before and just installed 6.4 final. It appears to be taking great pics. Better than stock G2 cam. Will test tonight indoors with low light on my GF.
I noticed you can't take pictures with the phone vertically.. The pictures come out sideways

That's not very good quality. I began thinking it was the software causing this camera to be a bust. It's the hardware I am gathering.
Did anyone try to 60fps video option. G2 can do. This software also has such option but result is always 30fps. Factory camera software can record 60fps video.
My low light pics were awful, the aosp camera did a better job, if that tells you anything

It tells not too much. I haven't used AOSP camera on LG G2 so far but low light function is not in my focus sorry, although I am very satisfied with low light capabilities of built in camera. What is interesting for me in this program is that pictures and video post-processing is much less then others'. As I see every phone manufacturer built as many post-processing options in their phone as they could do. Typical is the sharping and denoising which make pictures on mobile screen wow but zooming on monitor to just 100% it is already terrible usually. I hate this and in addition such kind of effects cannot be removed subsequently. I know these effects can be good and useful sometimes but I prefer if I can do the post-processing according to my taste. So this program is very promising from this point of view.
I did video in sunlight too and I got always 30fps result in spite of 60 fps setting. I am wondering whether any of you knows a trick how to turn it on. Thanks for it in advance.
Does anyone know whether you needed software to take advantage of the ois in the G2? Meaning, can a camera aside from the stock camera use the ois? I noticed this camera app has an anti shake mode but I'm guessing that's a software stabilization.

All camera software takes all advantage and disadvantage of OiS. It cannot be turned on/off. Also I see that software has an anti shake option but I haven't turned it on yet. I think using it does not make sense in case of photo because of OiS. In case of video? Interesting... I think so that software anti-shake function does not eliminate disadvantage of OiS .

Qualcomm libs handle hfr rates differently max fps range is 30 but if you add this camera parameter video-hfr
Code:
161// Values for HFR settings.
162const char QCameraParameters::VIDEO_HFR_OFF[] = "off";
163const char QCameraParameters::VIDEO_HFR_2X[] = "60";
164const char QCameraParameters::VIDEO_HFR_3X[] = "90";
165const char QCameraParameters::VIDEO_HFR_4X[] = "120";
video-hfr 60
video-hfr 90
video-hfr 120
you can enable hfr
Thanks a lot indeed. As I see I can do it just on rooted system. I am planing to root my phone, may be this weekend.

Nobody expect something special in case of low light! As I see it does not contain any special function for it. Use built in camera in low light! It works very well in these circumstances.
Aosp camera better than stock G2 camera? Must be something wrong with the phone . I can't make this phone take a bad picture.
What is nice about this app is that you can change the bitrate from very low to very high. Also, it will allow you to choose the file format you create and will allow for touch to focus in video, unlike the stock app in the G2.
Also, it automatically brightens the screen to 100% which is convenient. It seems to me that there are things that different camcorder/camera apps do better than others. Apparently there it's capable of recording from the input jack in a certain configuration that other apps are not able to. I don't recall exactly what the details are, but if you are interested in connecting an external mic, apparently this app can do something 'special'.

Disappointed with Camera, suggest alternate cameras apps

Had purchased this phone with lot of expectations about OIS camera but unfortunately the camera itself is capable bug LG provided with not a great camera app.
Now I know that there are mods available which to some extent improve the quality of photos but still its not upto the mark.
Now I want to know whether you are using any good camera app which you consider gives better result than the stock camera?
Looking forward to your suggestions.

I personally think the camera itself is great piece of hardware, the software is on the other hand, however, as many reported (and I agreed) the IQ (image quality) when taking in the good light source is super. In another hand, when taking under low light condition, it's crap.
There is a modded version of it, if yours is rooted, give it a try.
I tend not to install 3rd party app.
I've tried the camera on stock lg rom and 4.4.2 on PA, both pictures look terrible compared to the Nexus 5's camera with HDR mode.
I am using Focal camera (from the ex-CyanogenMod app ). Great UI and features. Still beta, but no lags for me)

lmao. random noobs who haven't even used the other device talking about comparison? what do you know? nothing.. keep theorycrafting.
the nexus 5 has an optimized camera app that has better image stabilization and HDR+ mode that actually works by taking 5 pictures and combining it into a much crisper picture compared to normal mode. the HDR mode in the G2 looks practically the same in terms of sharpness and quality.

I'm the opposite heh, I returned my Nexus 5 and picked up a G2 and think the pictures from the G2 look considerably better, in anything but great lightning. Outside with great lighting I think both create very good photos. Additionally, while the software part on the G2 isn't great it's still well ahead of the camera software on the Nexus, which is about as bare bones basic as you can get.

I think it actually only uses 3 pictures though. But not sure. I saw in a review that it uses 3 with 4.4.2 to make it faster a little. But it still turns out great. I personally can't see the difference in pictures unless placed side by side but that's just me I think since I don't really pay too close detail.
One thing I want to say is video on the nexus 5 is terrible unless full day light and even then not very good. It darkens it so much (which I think is software) but it's practically unusable with out lots of light because of that. Hopefully Google fixes that

Is the image stabilization a hardware feature? Like, in the VS980 version of the G2, does image stabilization work when using AOSP-based KitKat roms and the default AOSP camera?

Change it to 13MP in the settings menu too, because it's set lower as default.

I'm disappointed too with g2 camera (d802), it is extremely slow and in low light it is impossible to take pictures. Then I installed aosp roms and things got worse. Here some pics, taken in very low light with aosp camera (android 4.4.2) but even with stock rom camera I can not obtain decent results.

g3 camera has very littles camera modes and options

got the g3 yesterday and i have the g2, looking at the g3 camera ui and settings and options. there are very little to none, the g2 camera had more options and modes. i feel like they didnt even try for the camera. theres only 4 modes, dual, panorama, magic focus, and auto... if u count that.
what happen to all the other shooting modes like night, beauty shot, shot & clear, they didnt even add filters.
i hate when companys make a upgraded product but they remove other features from the last.

The best app by far which has access to all manual controls is 'A Better Camera'.
Google Camera is fine but like the G3's default camera app has little in the way of control.

So what is exactly your complain about? Are you aware that when LG device rings home and sends statistics of its usage then LG engineers could look into it and see what is the most used features of their product. And they can clearly see that very minority of people do make shots with dual camera, filters and all other fancy settings, instead most people just POINT and SHOOT. So why bother. Why spend precious engineers' stuff time to optimize features that will sit in the corner forever unused when LG needs to update ROMs for old devices and programmers are in need?
And for those who needs more tweaks and filters in camera settings there already plenty of 3rd party camera apps in GPlay

I love how minimal the camera app is it truly is point and shoot which is what a phone camera should be, if you want to go deeper than that a phone camera is not what you're looking for
LG wanted to go minimal on this whole device, the whole new UI reflects minimal and that includes the camera.

Honestly, I can understand the OP's disappointment. You won't find shooting modes like the ones he listed on a DSLR camera, but you'll find it in a regular 'ole point and shoot. And since these were available in the previous version, one might expect to find it in the new version.
But again, this is the beauty of android. Download a camera application that has what you want! There are very few limitations, which is why most of us love android powered devices.

The whole reason why there is no more night mode, I think, is because there was "intelligent Auto" mode in G2 and now its gone, too. But now IA is THE default mode of camera instead of optional while being in G2, so the camera sets itself to HDR, or night mode when appropriate based on the measured exposures and lighting conditions and dynamic range of frame
Beauty shot is probably included in frontal camera in auto mode, too.

not much just loved the g2 because of its ui and where the buttons are placed. its much better ui then the sluggish touch wiz on galaxy phones.
Somehow my touch to shoot has been turned off, i have to hit the shutter button now. Anyone know how to get it back to where i just touch the screen so it will focus and shoot?
Edit..
My bad, should have searched. Answer is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/sh...amera: Tap to focus and snap no longer works

Samsung so far has the best camera software, other brands should learn from the master how to do good camera app.

Camera lollipop vs camera kitkat

Hello guys i need some help with my girlfriends lg g2 d802 (european version).
We bought this phone with waranty and installed stock lollipop rom.
Camera during the day is ok but with low light zooming is quite terrible, 8 out of 10 pictures are blurry and not zoomed corectly.
Im reading that lg g2 on kitkat is much better phone, faster and it has better camera app.
Is that correct, should i flash for examlpe cloudy rom (kitkat based)? which version do you recommend?
I didnt search but if someone is willing to send me some links and instruction for flashing LG G2 i would be grateful
Thanks in advance for your reply's!

by zooming you mean focusing
no one with the common sense uses zooming on mobile phones
low light performance is average or bad whichever rom and camera you use... but it's can be a little bit better with Xcam and advanced drivers (on Cloudy roms - you can just install the Xcam app because the advanced driver is already in the rom)
there aren't many differences in camera performance on Kitkat or Lollipop - but Kitkat has an option of basic RAW photography if you use an app like Mi2raw...
Xcam + advanced driver + Xcam LG Settings app (optional and not free on Playstore) - gives you the best camera quality/options combo you can find for LG G2 (and it works both on Kitkat and Lollipop stock based roms, i.e. Cloudy rom or somboons stock rom)

Yes i ment focusing )). Thanks guys, i already installed xcam but without advanced drivers because i didnt wont to root phone, it had guarantee... It is better than stock, but low light performance is still bad. Not average, bad . 8 out of 10 pictures are blurry. Very dissapointing for flagship and how much it was paid. I was thinking about G3 or G4 but G3 has weak battery as G4 which also has bad motherboards and bugs with calling, my godfather boughte one before few months and he is very dissapointed in battery and bugs like this when he can not hang up, screen stays black, its not proximity sensor, many people complain.... So i think i'v done with LG for now. Thanks for your reply's i was thinking to downgrade to android 4 if the camera performance was better (focus) in low light. Thanks again for reply!!!
don't forget that G2 had the one of the best cameras 4 years ago... today - it's just mediocre...
if you want a good low light performance camera - start looking for the devices that have low f-stop optics (f2.0 or lower)...
G2 has f2.4 lens, which was good in its time...

Yes you are right, if one want low light performance he should be looking for f1.8-2, but, my old S3 had f2.6 and had quite good low light performance . I think driver is just bad. Heard that on G3 camera is improved... still g2 has very good daylight performance, similar to mine Vibe Shot. Camera is very usable. Just focusing in low light is very bad. Phone is great in performance and battery btw...

8 megapixels on 1/3" sensor size (samsung galaxy s3) is much better for low light than 13 megapixels on the same sensor size in LG G2... at least on paper
f2.4 and f2.6 is a little difference (a half-stop difference, something like taking the ISO down from 800 to 600)... the larger pixels on a same size sensor will always give you better low light performance... and as i can see - S3 has a digital image stabilization - maybe this option is crucial as well...
when you do indoor or low light mobile photography - make sure you hold the device without any shaking (due to decreased shutter speed in low light) - here is why G3 might be better because it has an infrared focus beam (and that is the only upgrade from the G2 camera)
btw why do you need good low light camera performance on a mobile device anyway? (or is it just me that doesn't take pictures in low light on a mobile device )

when you do indoor or low light mobile photography - make sure you hold the device without any shaking (due to decreased shutter speed in low light) - here is why G3 might be better because it has an infrared focus beam (and that is the only upgrade from the G2 camera)
btw why do you need good low light camera performance on a mobile device anyway? (or is it just me that doesn't take pictures in low light on a mobile device )

Yes you are right for pixel size, bigger pixels are better for low light performance because they can absorbe more light... Same is for sensor size. That's the reason why newer mobile phones have less mpx but bigger sensor and bigger pixels... There is no point to have so many mpx I think up to 12 are enough. Sony sensors are very good also Samsung isocell... But driver is of same importance... And camera software. LG G4 has phenomenal camera Sony imx234 with f1.8. pictures are just great.
G3 yes has infrared or laser autofocus I can't remember and I think that's the main reason camera has better focus in low light environment.
My vibe shot have Samsung isocell sensor, OIS and infrared focus. That really helps in low light...
Of course camera on phone has limitations. It can not be compared to DSLR in any way ))
