Screen mirroring with Chromecast. - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Seems that they finally got screen casting to completely work in the recent CM updates. Including a photo I took of my TV casting my screen. Sadly this is only able to just show that the camera is on making the TV endlessly repeat but it shows that it is working. I was able to play games and watch videos and the sound even went to the TV as well. If I hook up my wireless mouse with my otg cable and connect my Bluetooth keyboard I'll be set with the biggest screen I've ever seen android on.

Its only going to get better too. There's already so many more apps that work with it than there were a few months ago when I bought it. Screen mirroring was something people only talked about and wished could happen back then. You needed to have a miracast to screen mirror but even then it doesn't work like it doesn't on the Chromecast, im only noticing a latency of a fraction of a second. Enough to make playing games through your TV a little tricky but still doable.

very suprised dualshock 4 controllers work natively with otg cable... very nice combined with mirroring

This has worked wonders for me in my new car.
Now, I no longer need the MHL adapter and huge bulky HDMI cable to hook up to my stock in dash car radio screen.
Just the HDMI to RCA converter and the Chromecast. Works great!!!!!!! and takes up less space.

If I recall right, DS4 compatibility was within the Linux kernel, and was improved somewhat recently. But in any case, it is pretty nice that it works

I've been screen mirroring for a couple months now with a rooted Chromecast.

It seems at this point you won't be able to mirror your device without some additional hardware/software combo. Google wants you to start a google hardware family, which isn't out of the question if the price of the Q comes down some and there's some functionality that makes it worth it.
As it is now though everything I have with a screen talks to everything else with a screen but its still a bit haphazard to serve media in any different direction.
Hope this makes sense lol!

I only used my nexus 7 for like 2 days because I returned it due to battery problem and I didn't have enough time to check to stream to my smart TV (DNLA). My phone can stream to my smart TV (DNLA). I'm waiting for nexus 7 to be in stock again. In the mean time, how did you get your nexus 7 to stream to your smart TV?

To do what you are saying requires a Mobile High Definition link ~ aka an MHL connection which in turn goes to the HDMI port on a TV. Earlier cables (Samsung Galaxy S) could connect to a VGA port on a TV.
Unfortunately the Nexus does not come with any MHL capability otherwise we would by now be hearing of an MHL cable that you attach to the power socket (as is done on Samsung devices).
DNLA only links media files, as in Music, Photo's and Video. For that you need dedicated software to stream which has already been mentioned above.
Isn't possible any app to catch on a Google TV device and vice versa kind sling box for androids devices?

Android is lacking here big time, apple has airplay through apple tv to show the screen on the tv and play games etc throught it, all wirelessly.
Android needs this... and fast!
VNC client and server apps exist, so if you want to display your screen on an android enabled TV you should be able to do it with VNC?
Its a WIFI enabled Smart TV I have... can use all share on s2 to share videos and music to it, but cannot mirror your screen, its something they need to resolve soon.
What can I do if my TV doesnt have DNLA, and the N7 doesnt support MHL.
Is there any other way? USB to VGA cable?

It's nothing to do with Android it's ASUS and Google who are lacking.....
You have the S2 and that can link direct to your TV using as you say Allshare and for anything else you would use an MHL adapter as the S2 has MHL built in.
If the Nexus had an Allshare alternative built in and DLNA support you would be able to show media files on your TV..... and again if the Nexus had MHL built in you would then be able to use an MHL adapter and mirror your Nexus screen with your TV.
I'm not talking about the nexus in particular I mean android as a whole needs some kind of solution or they are going to fall behind. Our should I say they'll never catch up on that regard. Can you point me to am mhl adapter to check out out

The only way Android would have it as a whole is if Google demanded all manufacturers ensured the MHL hardware specification be built within their devices and that simply is not going to happen.
MHL is not a prerequisite of Android it's an added extra that runs totally independent. Yes the iDevice has it which makes it sound like Android is lacking but the iDevice is just one manufacturer. Just as Samsung is a manufacturer and yes they have MHL built in their devices, so it would be wrong to compare Apple to Google in this shortcoming.
As to pointing you to an MHL adapter, you can find these easily in either ebay or Google. The trouble is though if you intend to use it with the Nexus 7 you will be wasting you money. As I have already said, the Nexus 7 does not have MHL capability so it would not be able to read an MHL adapter.

Unlike the lack of USB OTG (On-The-go) which is a simple software limitation (as rooting then using Stickmount allows complete access) MHL is different as it is a hardware limitation. Google obviously left this out (as they did with other ports such as MicroSD) to keep the costs down.

Broken Slimport Adapter??

Hi all
I bought one of these from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Slimport-HDMI-adapter-Connect-projector/dp/B009UZBLSG/ref=cm_rdp_product however when I try to use it nothing happens
just wondering if anyone else has one of these, does the screen rotate to Landscape when you put just the adapter in (Not connected to a HDMI cable?)
I have tried it on a TV that has HDMI and as a long shot i tried it on my HDMI->DVI lead that connects my monitor to my PC - No go in both cases
Not sure at this stage if the adapter is broken, or my Phone isnt working.

No problem here. The screen doesn't rotate until the HDMI end is plugged in the TV.

Tried it on 4 TVs now with lots of different HDMI cables and it doesnt seem to work, so that leaves either a faulty adapter or faulty Nexus 4!
(I am right in thinking its just plug and play, i dont need to enable anything on my N4?)

I have one from the same source and it works like a charm via an 83p HDMI cable (similar source) to all 3 TV sets I've tried it with.
I bought one from Amazon here in the US, via http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009UZBLSG/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
got it Christmas eve, plugged into TV1 didn't work, thought it was my HDMI cable, tried it with TV2, worked right away. went back to TV1, didn't work, went back to TV2, didn't work. Reboot, didn't work, fiddled with the cable, worked for a few minutes, then stopped working.
Everytime I want to watch something, I spend about 15-20 minutes jiggling the adapter, unplugging, replugging the adapter to get it working again. 2 nights ago, I watched a movie, it worked, every minute or so it would give me a snow screen for half a second. Last night tried to watch another movie, spend 30 minutes with it, won't come on.
A friend has a N4 as well, going to go to his house tonight to see is it the adapter or my phone
edit: I went to my friend's home and tested it using his Xbox360 HDMI connection, neither his phone or my phone would display video, his TV simply said "no signal" I am sending it back to Amazon, and getting a full refund. Probably going to just grab a PTV3000 instead

It has to be Miracast compliant to work with the Nexus 4. That Belkin thing will NOT work with the N4. The Belkin is WiDi not Miracast.
The only wireless adapters on the market currently that are tested and known to work (with beta software) are:
Netgear Push2TV PTV3000
Actiontec SBWD100KIT01 ScreenBeam Wireless Adapter/Kit
Both can be found on Amazon. The Netgear can also be found in some Best Buy stores.
(I own the Netgear one and can confirm from 1st hand, daily use, that it does work with the N4.)

Screen mirroring only works with TV's with the very latest version of wifi direct / miracast - have a look at this thread, it is discussed in detail. The only working method available to you at present is the allshare cast dongle.

complete failure. I cannot even find any documentation on my TV that says yes or no that is has WIDI
I have the 6800. You can send video and photos to allshare play. You can now even control the youtube app for the tv with the updated youtube app for android. But true mirroring is not possible untill i got the dongle.
To be honest mirroring isnt really that usefull, only really if you want to game.

Works fine now but considering the adverts were showing that you didn't need the dongle and were making fun of the guy in the business meeting who didn't bring his, this was a major letdown. Especially since it cost another $90 on top...
I do find it useful though...
I have the Allshare cast dongle. It does work really well. I use it to mirror my GT-N8010 screen to a data projector. My data projector is quite old and does not have HDMI in so I had to buy a HDMI to VGA digital to analogue converter too. However it now means I can present off my Note and I am not constrained by cables.

We need OUYA as Miracast Receiver (someone did it on Nexus 7?!?)

Saw this on Reddit:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1iwnvb/miracast_working_on_nexus_7_devices_link_to_dev/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMlTxTyoaOs
I was only mildly interested until I saw the note that he got it working both for receiving and sending.
If we can integrate this into our OUYAs (and it should be easier to do since Nexus 7 is somewhat similar hardware), then we won't need another box to receive Miracast streams!
I will try and port it, but not sure when I'll get around to it. Posting it here in case some dev wants to take a crack at it sooner!
Also if anyone can verify that this will/will not work, please do! Getting the OUYA to receive screen-mirroring of some sort has been on my wishlist since I first ordered it.
EDIT: Knew there had to be a catch I wasn't thinking of... The Miracast stuff linked is working with Android 4.2, whereas OUYA is 4.1, so that would probably be the main hurdle -either getting OUYA up to 4.2 or backporting Miracast+patches to 4.1. Not sure how difficult either would be.
EDIT2: OUYA's weak wifi would probably also be a problem, would probably work better to rework the streaming to work as long as you're on the same router.

What about the Chromecast device? I'm really not understanding the goal here.
Basically sending video from a device, to the Ouya, to pass through to the TV?

Yes it's all about mirroring the screen output of your phone via ouya to the TV. What's the point? Mostly displaying content without having to transfer it to the ouya.
Oh and chromecast doesn't support miracast.

Yeah, I posted all this before I heard about Chromecast.... believe me, I jumped on that boat quickly!
I already got my Netflix promo code and my chromecast should arrive by Wednesday and I have great hopes for it, but yeah, it won't do full-on mirroring. True mirroring isn't really needed in most use cases though, but it is handy in a few.

If Chromecast could do full on mirroring we woudn´t even need a Ouya anymore.
At first this didn't make sense to me, ouya as a miracast receiver to stream from your nexus 7 while the ouya is already hooked up to the tv via hdmi?! But when I think about it, this could make the ouya perform double-duty as a small miracast dongle/receiver. I was looking to buy a miracast receiver but if the ouya could do this, then I would probably buy this as my miracast receiver to boot. I guess if you had a video or somethng on your nexus 7 and didn't want to bother sending the file over to your ouya, you could just miracast it.
Personally, I think if the hardware is capable of it, why not? meaning why isn't miracast enabled in all devices by now? Last year they were saying the n7 (and the n10) couldn't do miracast, well this guy proved it can, and the n10 officially has support as of 4.3.
But here's the bad news: I was reading that guys blog who made miracast work for the n7 and the sink mode (acting as a receiver) has been stripped out of android 4.3. Why google did that I don't know.
I commented on it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44124359&postcount=7
His site mentioning it is here:
https://github.com/kensuke/How-to-Miracast-on-AOSP/wiki/Android-4.3
I'm still surprised so much time has past and none of the rom devs were trying to implement miracast in their roms for the n7.
I hope the source from 4.2.2 (last source with sink code) can be brought forward to 4.3, but that probably makes this all the harder. But I'd be interested to hear why google removed that functionality.
it's also a neat feature to be able to miracast device to device, for say showing someone how to do something, share a video etc. I guess google never advertised the n4 as capable of being a receiver?
You need to research miracast more. it's a failure, there is a delay which makes trying to play a game useless. unless your playing checkers or watching a movie. Miracast is useless , it's why devs don't bother with it. Chromecast uses a google tv port to do the heavy lifting. get a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and a Bluetooth controller. link them to your nexus 7 (2013) with hdmi out and you have a ouya on steroids.

Hmm, well this video with the work being done for nexus 7 looks pretty smooth. Yes, a little latency, but for a 3d game that's working pretty good. Especially on a n7 which supposedly couldn't do it.
I read one comment on it being a failure but I couldn't find any comments on any dev here attempting to implement it in their rom. Maybe there are some things to work out, but it's still getting a big push. LG has announced about 70 tv sets with built-in miracast and mircosoft has it in windows 8.1. So I wouldn't give up on it yet.

If I can get the performance as in the video above, I'll be a happy camper.

Stick with the LGs for wireless display & Miricast with the N4. Argos and Currys were both doing decent deals recently.
The 42ln575v @ Argos/Currys for 370 or the 42ln578v for 399 at Currys are decently priced
The LG remote app in the play store is pretty good and some models come with nfc tags to launch the remote etc.
I picked up a similar one, a little better panel than the above one and am really pleased so far and the NowTV passes for Sky movies and sports will come in handy too. I'd recommend it, but the price has gone back up on it....

So any TV that says built in wifi, will that do the job or is it LG technology?
edit: This it? http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/lg/39ln575v/lg-39ln575v £40 cheaper
To be honest, I don't know.
Some other TVs may play nicely with Miracast on the N4. Some may not have used the standard to the letter or may have done a custom implementation of wireless display and may not work properly.
If you find a model you prefer I'd either test it in the shop or google "nexus 4 +TVmodel wireless display" at least.
Let me say that it was one of my considerations in getting an LG but even if it didn't work I still would have gotten the TV I did. The LG is a nice tv.
I have never had a problem with LG t.v,s and personally recommend them also , have used both mirror cast via wifi and slimport both without any problems.
That also goes for Toshiba.
One company I have read a lot of problems with is Samsung , all be it I bet the sg3 /sg4 work fine with them.
So I guess you known were I am coming from LG nexus 4 = LG T.V. Samsung t.v = s4 / s3. Just my thoughts and not exact science.

@jmcgraw those LG's are pretty much sold out and prices gone up where available. I tried a Sony tv and noticed there is a like a 1 second lag. Is there any lag with your LG?

Yeah, it seems up to a second occasionally as well.
I think it's fine most of the time, but if I was playing a lot of games I'd probably want to use a slimport adapter instead.

Do you think its worth getting a ptv3000 instead? That way I can get a cheaper tv?

I don't know. If you already had a tv you were happy with otherwise then sure, the ptv is a reasonable addition.
If you find a great deal on a cheaper/nonsmart tv then it would be a good alternative as well, but if you're only going to be saving £20 to £30 I'm not sure it would be worth it.
Have you considered a slimport adaper or a chromecast?

Sadly not. Its very very limited. Before I was able to play my offline music on tv but Google decided to block that feature with an update . Only plays music purchased from Google music.
The YouTube updates made it worst. I connect it to my Tv; play one video. All going well. But if my Nexus 4 screen goes to sleep it stops working. If I want play next video; I have to reconnect it to my TV.
Oh and after switching my router security to wpa2; chromecast cannot be detected anymore. I searched online and it's not only me. Now, It's just sitting on my computer table collecting dust.

Slimport is wired yes and plays/shows everything on the screen as long as the screen is on.
Mirrorcast and chromecast both rely on wifi.
Tried both and personally prefer slimport its dam cooool.
Games are hard to play thought as you need sometimes to look at the phone to hit the buttons e.t.c which means you're not concentrating on the T.V.
If you get one of them game controllers you should be o.k.
It would need to be a Bluetooth one or one that doesn't connect to the micro USB out socket as you need that for the slimport.
Sorry I no nothing about controllers as I have never used one.
Phone : Nexus 4 /Rom : cataclysm / Kernel : Stock.
