Random restart after update to Android 4.4.2 kit kat when using Gear 2 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used to be happy with my Galaxy S4 with stock 4.2.2 (rooted) but then I bought a Samsung Gear 2 Neo and I discovered I couldnt used it if I'm not in Android 4.3+ (with all the samsung garbage). Then I tried Ota update (i like the official way...) but no luck because of system modified (Triangle Away couldnt make it...), then I tried Samsung Kies and voila! Android 4.4.2 Kit kat (I9505XXUGNE8 and then rooted with Towelroot) , state of the art.... and now one restart every hour or more...
Sure is some kind of compatibility and I know I probably can "fix" it in many hard ways (and probably end up doing any of them):
- Factory reset + clean cache (I didnt do it when I updated because I like the official and the hard way... I want to keep my stuff...and now i cant go to recovery mode either...)
- Flash another ROM, etc..
But I would like to know why, even if i can't fix it (as in my job as programmer I like to find the bugs...).
I narrowed down the problem to probably related to the Gear 2 bluetooth connection with the Gear Manager, as it seems not happening if i disable the bluetooth (but not 100% sure, I havent been several days without bluetooth to test it because I like my new toy and dont want to be without it right after i got it...)
I learned about some apps that record the log just before the OS crashes so thats what i have now, a lot of error logs with not very good clues but seems the final error before the restart is always the same.
Here are the highlights (that i can see and that shows in all logs):
...

Where the hell is /data/log? I cant find it...
And here the full last log of a restart: pastebin.com slash 83p56NMN (I cant paste links...)
Please, any help or comment is appreciated.
Greetings,
Alex

I saw this in other thread:
Don´t disable KNOX messaging with SuperSU (might cause random system restarts or bootloop if you thereafter removing knox).
Simply remove all shown Knox stuff and you´r done!
I did that when SuperSu asked me.... could it be the cause? how can i undo that?

Anyone? Anything?
Also the log is full of MP-Decision Errors, if that could be related...
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Free mobile app

It seems a common new bug not related to bluetooth or gear
I finally found other threads that are full of people with the same problem of random soft-boots after upgrading to 4.4.2 and having root or disabled KNOX or similar. I also had reboots without the gear connected so it seems its not the cause but just maybe another trigger of the problem...
I'll try all the suggestions in other threads until I can make the reboots stop....

More information about the problem related to Knox (STILL waiting to confirm if it is the source of the reboots...)

Yeah, first thing I made, was the same thing after towelroot. I installed supersu from play store and I let it to disable knox.
Is there any way to revert that from supersu? I would feel more comfortable in that way. I did install titanium backup and found bunch of knox apps and services, but the app doesn't show out of the box is it freezed or unfreezed? Besides, I don't even know is that what supersu did(did it freeze it or disable, or what)?
Should freezing and then unfreezing from TI backup work? And after that I can delete all knox related crap?

I made the same mistake but after reading some posts in this thread I could unfreeze the knox apps that SuperSu had frozen using Titanium Backup. Just check all apps that contains Knox in the name and you will see a couple of them frozen ( in my case "Knox Notification Manager" and "KnoxMigrationAgent")
Now I will see if the reboots stop and maybe I uninstall of the Knox apps (or maybe not...)

SOLUTION!!!
See my post in: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53896735&postcount=71
Everything of KNOX (2.0) must be deleted!!

Thanks for the info. For now by only unfreezing the knox that were frozen the restarts have stopped for some hours. I'll wait until the end of the day to see if it remains stable.
The knox apps are not bugging me so I prefer not to mess with them yet...
Are there more benefits for uninstall or erase them apart from the restart problem?

10 hours without reboots after unfreezing the knox apps that were frozen by supersu. In my case it seems the only thing necessary

I'd be not so imperative... I upgraded to 4.4.2, NF2, I DID NOT disabled anything of Knox, did not deleted it (simply: I'm not touching it) and I have no restarts since last 10 days (after update).
Secondly, you have rooted using CF-root which uses completely different mechanism (tripping Knox) than towelroot.

Note 4 reboots randomly only when rooted and it happens mostly when it's idle

I have the Note 4 (SM-N910H), I've had mine rooted for 2 weeks and it kept randomly rebooting twice or so every 1-2 days, now I've removed the root and everything seems to be working fine with no reboots for 1 week. Most (I even think all of them) of the random reboots happened while the phone was idle (screen off).
I've rooted using the CF-Auto-Root via odin.
Anyone knows why the root was causing random reboots for me? I've tried with knox disabled and enabled and with both options I get the same reboots while the phone is idle, also I would like to mention that I don't have an SD card in my phone. I tried everything, Tried a recovery reset, tried a soft reset... It only happens when I root it.
Thanks.

Xposed sucks on a stock odex roms. I suggest you flash a new rom or deodex your stock rom.
the note4 i have atm was never rooted (efuse intact), but it also reboots randomly every few days, sometimes every few hours!
so i would say root is NOT the general cause!!
maybe, or perhaps root makes it worse, but it cant be the only reason!!

In my case it's the issue, I've had mine un-rooted for 3 weeks now with no any random reboot, I rooted it yesterday using CF auto root just to test and it rebooted today while it was idle. I've never used any Xposed modules. It's also on stock rom and stock recovery.

I think it's worth a try to unroot and see if the problem is solved for you.
Thank you.
Do you know how to unroot?
The biggest problem is how to pass my apps and data without Titanium that needs root access..

Just flash the latest stock ROM from sam mobile (http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/) for your exact model number and CSC using odin, no data or apps will be lost and root will be automatically removed after the process.
You can install "Phone INFO ★Samsung★" from play store to know what your exact model number and CSC, you can also type all the fields you get after you open it (except for your IMEI) and write them down here to me so I can give you a link of the stock ROM from sam mobile so you just download and flash via odin.
After rooting open SuperSu and choose never for the question to also disable Knox. Until now I didn't have any unexpected reboot.

I mentioned in my original post that I tried with both, knox disabled and enabled but with both options I had the same random reboots, no matter what I do, the same problem for me as long as I am rooted. Did you have random reboots before while you are rooted and now you fixed it somehow?

[Q] Apps stuck on installing, help please

After rooting the Note 4 for the first time with the stock rom, all apps I try to install get stuck on the "Installing..." screen, even in the Play Store they do the same for upgrading apps. That happened shortly after I installed the Xposed Installer ( being that the last app I could install on my Note ).
As I am writting this, one of the apps jsut installed but it lasted 2 hours, I know it isnt any connection issues because Im triying to install apks already downloaded. Please some help, I'm new to Samsung phones coming from a Nexus 5 and I find this a little bit messy.
Thanks for your time.
Personally for me xposed caused more problems than it solved. That would be my first port of call.
It may be worth checking your security settings, they may also be blocking your installs.

This happened to me too in other samsung device. Try this:
- Go to SuperSU - Apps - Forget Wanam Xposed.
- Go to Wanam Xposed app and give new root perms and update it if you need it.
- Reboot your device and try to install new apps. I think you won't have more problems. Good luck :highfive:

hi ,
i agree with JagDave that it seems that it could only be Xposed Framework .I stated in other threads ,that Xposed does not "play nicely " with Note 4. It will either break "something/app " when installing/installed or uninstalling ..?.
I had Xposed break apps eg... S health ..Private mode ,lag or as what you described above ..not installing apps /stuck on installing.
I had to use " work arounds /fixes /patches" ....Wanam ( Secure storage ) and then my device( N910f Note 4,)was working 100%. ,but to me it is not worth it and I uninstalled it( then it broke my Google Play app on uninstalling ! ) ,
Further i noted the dev ( rovio89 of Xposed stated in "earlier " post )that he was not going to" update" Xposed re the Dalvik /Art ( Lollipop ) issue .?
If you look at at his last stable update for Xposed framework it has been "months " back . (No wonder it "breaks " apps ...it was last updated ,before Note 4 was released( and thus not " optimized" for Note4 ? )
I have Xposed installed on all my other " old " devices and working 100% and i am happy with Xposed Framework , but Note 4 ..? (no ) and i can understand the dev rovo89 " issue" if it is worthwile further developing re Dalvik ?
I would rather wait for the dev ,to enabled Xposed to work with Art and re install it then .?
Bottom line.... its your decision to install or use workaround/fixes !
good luck
Thanks everyone, somehow after a few reboots and some time the problem fixed itself, I also managed to get S-Health to work properly but the Private Mode won't work since the Knox counter is triggered, something related to being rooted, as of yet there is no proper fix for it.

"device status - Custom" refurbished phone

Hi all
I've upgraded from S4 to s5 today
Bought a refurbished s5 unlocked from eBay (reputable seller)
Rather stupidly I didn't restore factory settings as I assumed seller would (they sell multiple phones so I'm assuming they know what they are doing!!)
Downloaded and updated all my apps and data already.
Then I've gone into settings and notice it says status is "custom". So I get message about custom software and updates won't work etc
I'm not quite sure why this would be the case?
I'm assuming they dont need to root to unlock the phone if it wasn't unlocked already?
Even if they had to root why would they install a custom rom? ?
2 questions:
1) I'm assuming I just need to download stock from sammobile and install using odin????
2) is there anything to worry about/check after buying a refurbished s5? Fingerprint works etc so I'm confident it's a real Samsung phone!
Just a couple of weird things like there is an app in the application manager called Baby crying monitor but there is no app anywhere I can find????!!!!
Any help appreciated.
Make sure cache is not set to "Art". This will cause same issue.

Sorry, not sure what you mean by that? How do I check cashe isn't set to art?
2 other bits got me wondering..
There is knox mentioned in the application manager but there is no app for it (like this crying baby app thing)
also when I try to uninstall apps or try to stop "restarting" apps in "clean master" it says something about needing access and shows a screen shot of SU. Basically telling me I need root access with SU to able to perform those tasks.
Before I rooted my S4 I'm sure I didn't need root to uninstall programs through clean master? ??
I might be wrong but it maybe that a previous owner has rooted the phone and the root has been removed but a full reset not been done?
I dunno. It just feels a bit weird.!!!
As I am "Far from a Jedi", you could try using "phone info samsung". It is on the google play store. Will give you info about your phone to check.
Failing that, I would suggest a factory reset to return to a known starting point.
I know it will involve setting up your phone again, at least you will know for certain.
Hope this helps...

Have you thought about contacting the seller and saying I want a different phone or money off as this shows custom, has Knox flag been tripped in the download menu? From power off hold vol down + power + home.
Thanks to all replies!
So a factory reset has got it cleaned up.
I've used the app mentioned in previous post and everything is legit.
Knox is at 0.0
It still says Custom though but considering everything is legit I'm not too fussed
Would like to know why it says custom though!!???
Unrelated question (didn't want to hog posts by creating a new one....)
I've been using clean master on my s4 and I was using between 35-50% of ram.
On my s5 I'm running consistantly at a lot higher ram I'm having to boost frequently during the day
Is it because the s5 just uses more ram or is it related to the fact I was rooted on the s4 and debloated a tonne of c**p? ????
(The ram is well over 1gb most of the time. Even when I boost it only goes to about 50%)
I don't get lag or slowness but as a bit OCD I want lower!!!)
Any ideas why it's so high?
Its normal, IDK why. I'm running AICP and even I've never seen my ram usage dip below 1.2GB, it was 1.4GB on the Sammy rom.
Annoyingly I've now reinstalled all apps and folder etc (after factory reset)to find out that certain apps won't work because it says my phone is rooted.
Is my only option now to try reinstall software through kies ??

if your knox is 0x0 your varanty is fine. well u can use xblast xposed tools to change the custom to official. after this u can receive updates on your phone. if u don't want to keep your phone rooted after update phone is going to be unrooted if u want to keep it buy su pro and tick on survival mode.

i9506 problems with SU

hello.
I have rooted my phone for some time with chainfire super user.
I started facing blue screen problems and random restarts now. thought maybe there is some hardware faults. started SU app and have choosed full unroot and problem have disappeared for some time.
What have happened and why?
firmware 4.4.2.
Currently i updated software through kies (nj1 update).
so far so good. no bluescreen for now.
update.. still getting randoms reboots... what is causing them?
I also had random reboots after I rooted. Though I don't think the super user app caused it. It happened only after I installed viper4android.
I changed roms since then and no problem.
Maybe you installed an app that causes it. Only thing I can suggest is, either change roms, or reinstall stock rom and root again
Did you delete Knox-related apps from /system?
no. i didn't delete them... should I? there were nothing mentioned about file delete in rooting manual so i did nothing.
Should I delete every file that contains word knox or any concrete files?
After I updated phone by kies, rooted again, data format couple times + dalvik cache clear, problem seems to disappear. for half day so far so good, no reboot.
to change rom will be next thing i will do if reboots reappear
Knox can cause problems on rooted phones. That's partly why you don't find Knox in ROMs based off stock. So yes, you should remove the Knox apps in /system.
just remembered... when I launched SU app it asked me do i want to disable knox. i choose yes.
is it enough for removing knox or it is necessary run for example DE-SAMSUNGNIZER_KNOX_REMOVAL_SCRIPT_V1.0.zip
p.s. sadly i can't install busybox. after i click install it shows "checking system" forever
Choosing yes was the right answer, but while SuperSU does disable Knox, I'm inclined to believe it's only so that SuperSU can properly function and install the su binary and doubt it's permanent. However, I never tested this, as I delete Knox apps regardless.

After using UPSM Manager and UPSM+ almost all apps disabled/disappeared

Hi there
I wanted to add Messenger to UPSM screen (Ultra power saving mode), so I've tried UPSM Manager and UPSM+. None of them worked on my Galaxy S5 however, after few tries almost all of my apps disappeared. There are a few left. System: Contacts, Text messages, Phone, Settings plus Google and Lockwatch. That's all. The rest disappeared.
On application manager in settings I can see all of them, most of them have status "disabled".
I've downloaded those two apps from here:
UPSM Manager - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751785
UPSM+ - http://downloadapk.net/down_UPSM-ROOT.html
I've read that there is a very high probability that they won't work and that Google does not refund price in such case hence downloading .apk - could it be some kind of trojan from the 2nd link?
I've connected with adb console and
PHP:
pm list packages -d
shows 300+ packages as disabled.
PHP:
pm list packages -d | while read line ; do pm enable ${line#*:} ; done
fails with
PHP:
Error: java.lang.SecurityException: Permission Denial: attempt to change component state from ...
I can't run su as it freezes adb shell - su is also disabled so I can't enable it nor reinstall (Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_INTERNAL_ERROR])
Any hint how to restore my phone? Right now it has less features than Nokia 3210...
So maybe I'll ask a different question. Is there a way in my current state to regain root access (via adb shell) and enable disabled apps?

Hi,
In order to get helped it is always useful to provide at the beginning some basic info like phone model, firmware ver , root, recovery (custom or stock) etc.
Easiest way when you messed up your phone would be just restore your nandroid backup but I assume that you didn't make one, did you?
If not, easiest way IMO to regain root is just flashing CF-autoroot or if you have a custom recovery supersu zip file.
I wrote in Galaxy S5 forum so
Anyway: Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F), Android 5.0, G900FXXU1BOJ1, stock os, rooted
Haven't heard of nandroid before. I had titanium backup, but that's just apps I assume and they are still present on the phone, just disabled.
I haven't heard of CF-autoroot neither, but after picking matching details I got to desktop.firmware.mobi/device:370/firmware:12219 (I can't post urls with <10 posts). I'll have to read what to do with it without breaking a phone even more.

Here is the link to CF-autoroot for S5 variants:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696537
For applying you need to be familiar with using odin pc software. Be aware that this will trigger KNOX flag if yours is still 0x0.
By the way, how did you root your device initially?
KNOX was set when I initially enable root. To be honest, I can't recall which software I used, but it just worked without any problems. I was more than a year ago. Maybe it was CF but I just don't remember the name?
Anyway, I've generated image via CF-autoroot but it fails:
<ID:0/004> Complete(Write) operation failed.
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
and now phone says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" :-/

Hmm, so you still can't enable any disabled apps? I am afraid that you may need to try factory reset and if this doesn't help then re-flash complete firmware with full wipe. Before I would make backup of all useful staff what is still working and available in your phone.
Edit: did you read whole app thread? There are a few solutions/workarounds which helped some users with their issues but not sure if it is applicable to your problem,

There is a button "delete everything" but it does not work. Nothing happens when I click it. So the next step is to reflash firmware? That seems like a bit over my knowledge at the moment :/
Also, I assume there is no way to backup sms/mms - not able to install any backup soft and no root for adb:
PHP:
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
adb: error: failed to copy '/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db' to '.\mmssms.db': remote Permission denied
I'll try from recovery menu.
Ok, so it worked from recovery menu. Data are wiped, phone install some german bloatware and it's like when I first bought it. As I suspected, despite Google backup enabled, it does not work. No apps are being installed. I have to recreate every single app with it's data. That's a small disaster, ech..
Samsung backup restored some sms/mms but from February this year (heh).
Looks like all those automatic backup from Samsung and Google does not work at all and I should probably do some cyclic manual data dump. So why all those backup settings if it does nothing at all?
Anyway, thanks for your help.

Sorry for that. What do you mean by saying "no apps installed" You wrote before that your apps (user and most of the system) have been disabled, not uninstalled by the UPSM.
Are all your disabled system apps still at the same state after factory reset?
You wrote german bloatware? It looks like you have German branded Lollipop 5.0 firmware installed. I would definitely move to Polish latest unbranded (XEO) Marsmallow 6.0.1 to clean up your phone or if you wish to have rooted and debloated stock-based firmware then this rom is a very good alternative:

By saying "no apps installed" I meant that after factory reset (wipe from recovery menu) and signing into my google account, backup restore did not install anything. But I've done yet another reset, this time from options and this time I've set up google account on welcome wizard and.. it worked, google backup restored all 107 apps BUT with no settings (they claim that settings should be also restored), so I have all my apps, but with no settings, so like after fresh install. I'm recreating everything from scratch, one by one.

I would definitely move to Polish latest unbranded (XEO) Marsmallow 6.0.1 to clean up your phone or if you wish to have rooted and debloated stock-based firmware then this rom is a very good alternative:

Yup, phone was bought as (I'm not sure how to translate "powystawowy") refurbished, from shop exhibition(?), a bit cracked on corners, but 2x cheaper. Anyway, it was just a matter of uninstalling 5 German apps (with root of course).
I did not put any other firmware as the one from Samsung has some unique features like mentioned ultra power saving which I enjoy on long travels. I've read that custom roms does not support this or NFC and few others.
