Guide - How to get out of "stuck at boot animation" - Moto G General

Its now all over the development section where people are trying custom ROM and getting stuck at infinite bootanimation loop.
This, as explained by famous developer dhacker29, the f2fs file system is very sensitive and gets easily corrupted. This results in stuck at bootanimation.
Presenting the solution – One time, shut it all and noob friendly
Common steps
1) From your working ROM, copy all your sd card data somewhere safe (PC, pendrive etc)
2) Backup all your apps (you can use titanium back up or this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1581653)
3) Download stock firmware for all those “what if it goes wrong” issues.
4) Install drivers for Motorola devices
5) Download your favourite ROM
6) Install minimum adb and fastboot
7) Install TWRP (official support is now available)
The geek method
8) Format /system, /data and /data/media (I strictly mean format as simple wipes won’t do)
9) Now sideload your rom file
a. Advance in TWRP
b. ADB sideload and swipe to start
c. Connect to computer where you have installed drivers and adb
d. Start cmd and type adb devices – it should show your device
e. Now side load by typing adb sideload drive letter:\where\your\rom\rom.zip
10) Reboot to recovery
11) Now install ROM as normal
12) Wipe cache and dalvik and reboot
Non Geek method
8) Install stock firmware for your respective device using fastboot (there are tutorials that have the batch file which installs the firmware automatically by simply clicking the batch file)
9) Install TWRP recovery
10 ) copy ROM zip file and flash
Everyone is now requested to use the guide, help me improve it ans stop flooding dev section with same question over and over again.

Alternate Method : Noob Friendly.
First of all backup your sd card (i.e data/media)
Flash Philz Touch 6.26.6 Recovery
Hope you have OTG cable and a pendrive.
Copy the rom which you want to install on pendrive. Attach pendrive through OTG.
(backup your current rom on usbdisk. For this goto Backup and Storage. Find option backup on storage/usbdisk :good: )
Now, select Wipe Data/Factory Reset. It will ask Wipe to install new rom,tap on it. Say Yes.
After that goto Mounts and Storage and format /data and /data/media (/sdcard). Say Yes.
Done.
Now flash your favorite custom rom.
Select the option install from sdcard. Then select usbdisk. Select your custom rom and install it

Oh man..!
I was one of the first people who started facing this issue...
That time, 2 months back, I couldn't figure what to do...
So, I installed Stock GB Firmware (link in my signature)..
Finally, we've got a method to fix that..
I've been away of this forum for quite a lot of time now..
Good to see such development coming in.. :good:

does anyone know a quick and easy way to copy content of SD card to somewhere ?

Quickest way I think is to take a USB Drive and attach it through an OTG-Cable, then use ES File Explorer to copy all things to it..
Connecting to a PC through USB takes more time due to some limitations there...
UST OTG works good.. :good:
You can use WiFi Direct maybe..

OK cool ty

I just bought a 64 GB (but actually 58.86 GB when I looked in storage settings) so I'm going to try this method either tonight or tomorrow night - the alternative method as I have philz recovery installed

Yeah... Lots of people were having the same problem. Sadly, most people choose to not to search before posting same issue again and again.
But i still hope this guide helps other. This should probably be sticky.

sorry for no feedback yet. I am waiting on next build of ROM as this version has a boot problem

When I searched for the issue, I found nothing on it...And I had no idea how to fix it..
I thought to make a thread about the problem but didn't had enough time in those days..
I thought someone will eventually report the problem..
I think flashing the RetailGB firmware helped because it formatted the internal memory...

[Release] Clockwork Recovery Port. Latest release V4 fixes graphical issues

I take no responsibility for any harm that comes to your phone as a result of applying this mod.
I suggest people start using genokolar's version instead, available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067490
Clockwork Recovery port based on Koush's 3.0.2.8 source.
Available here: http://www.multiupload.com/DQGL84P3A5
Source available on my github: https://github.com/stockwell/u8800-clockwork-recovery-port (bit messy.. will do a cleanup when I have the time)
BIG THANKS TO 357546 for creating the new kernel!!
v4 Notes:
- Now using 357546's kernel with fixed framebuffer driver capable of RGB565!
- Seems to be fully functional aside from rom manager integration
- Some small cleanups in init scripts and sbin
Detailed Installation:
- Ensure that there are no Huawei rom updates on your SD-Card in the dload folder and unplug the phone from your computer
- Boot to bootloader mode by pressing the up and down volume keys and pressing the power button. This will show a plain violet/purple screen.
- Connect the phone to your computer. In windows it will automatically mount one mass storage device which corresponds to the /cust_backup folder on your phone. If your OS supports EXT3 it will mount multiple devices, look for the one with an images directory and this is the device to use.
- In the images directory rename recovery.img to something else (ie. recovery.bak) and then copy the new recovery image in its place.
- Unmount the mass storage device to ensure all cached writes are completed and then disconnect from the computer. Exit bootloader mode by pulling out the battery.
You now have the clockwork recovery installed. Boot to recovery by holding the volume up and power buttons to turn the phone on.
wow!
hope for a perfect recovery!
Any feedback on this?

Thanks for the support! I've got an issue though, I've applied the recovery but when I press the vol buttons and power I am taken to the purple screen instead of the green recovery menu. V2 worked fine though......not sure if anyone else is having the same issue?

Hey, just a question on that topic - I goto 'Backup Current ROM' and it asks me to install clockmod recovery, and asks to verify what model of phone; obviously u8800 isn't an option on the list.
So.... Aroo? Sorry if I'm missing something obvious
actually you don't need to install rom manager
just follow the instructions in this post

Yep, so just skip using the app entirely. Got it

When you are in recovery after the last step which says so, are you just suppose to take the first option "reboot system now"?
Sorry, completely beginner with these kinds of stuff.
Edit: I guess I should choose backup and restore> backup but when i do so it says "Can't mount SD-card"
I have serious problem by finding the bootloader drivers! The driver update is failing all the time? Do some of you have the driver folder you can give me?
THX!

Feel free to just have a poke around and see what it can do. At the moment the only really useful thing is backup and restore.
I'm not sure why it won't mount the sd. I should mention that it does not use the internal 'sd-card' so you'll get that error if you don't have an external sd-card inserted.

I didn't think that drivers were needed, it should just come up with the mass storage device. From what I remember there are two other devices that windows detects but cannot find drivers for, but don't stress about that as it's not needed. Try it again and see how it goes, it may have mounted but you were stressing about the drivers so missed that it was working.

Can you please check if unmounting works good? There's an option under Settings/Storage but using it always results in a persistent notification saying something like 'USB storage removed. Please insert new media'. Unplugging the USB drive without unmounting results in an error too!

I would check with Total File Commander and see if it exists. Meanwhile can you say how your USB drive is formatted ? I mean the file system ?

So the problem does exist in all variants. I was reading through Moto X forums earlier and it has the same bug too
Here´s another new thing, new values were added. Personally I´m glad that
there´s now 0,25x option because it solves the problem with dialer and 0,5x was too much for me.
Edit: sorry, missed Gravitybox silent tweak.
Just bumping this up.
Edit: @cesc1972
Just thought you might want to edit the title of your post to something more specific - add date or system version, because I feel it didn´t get as much attention as it deserves.
Also, besides the OTG fix there´s seems to be an improvement in radio, which was brought to attention by @lost101 in his thread:

I mean if you don´t use any transition effects (I always diasable them, no reason to deliberately slow down the UI), the dialer or phone app behaves like this: when you start it (and it wasn´t already running in the background), what you see by default are the contacts. If you tap dialpad icon on the bottom, dialpad won´t start just the icon disappears and you have to tap two more times to show the dialpad. You can remove this behaviour when you set transition effects to something more than 0x. On previous builds, minimal value was 0,5x which was far too much for me. Now with this new patch there is 0,25x option as well which is acceptable. But the dialpad bug is still there when you turn transitions off.

Yes because you will be doing it via sp flash tools and there is no rooting involved there
As there is no rooting involved here, the phone is secured same as earlier aka stock irrespective the size of storages are changed, Am i correct in that understanding. I am worried of alterations, but as the space is very low I need to do this for the good use of phone. I am a normal user of phone, not in development. So I would be so happy to get hep from you all and understand if there is any side effects of loosing the peace of mind, Will the phone be secured as earlier before it was done?

I don't think so. Try flashing stock KitKat rom before going for this method
Successfully flashed EBR1 and 2
Thank you for the support. I was able to successfully do it. I have got my app storage size increased. Thanks a lot. For models with 8GB Internal , it is good if we can increate to 3or 4GB if thats possible. Please let us know.

[trick] Adopted SD fix [100%working] [different than other one]

For this fix to work you need zip of two different ROMs one with working adopted sd and other is the rom you want to flash ( the one showing corrupted sd card when you try to format it as internal eg- cm).
I recommend you to use orion as the first zip (the one with working adopted sd).
Now follow these steps:-
1- Flash the first zip in which adopted is working fine.
2-format your sd card as internal
3- using any root explorer copy misc folder from data and paste it in your sd card
4-now perform a clean flash of your desired ROM (dont wipe sd card)
5- before rebooting go to file manager of twrp copy misc folder that you copied in step 3 to the data folder.
6- reboot , you will notice you have a working adopted sd (no need to format it again).
Well its long method but it would surely work and you can switch roms without loosing adopted sd data with the same method.
Feel free to ask if you didn't get something.
Hey! bro nevermind This Was very big missunderstanding.......sorry for that...keep going

It's the same thing mentioned in here

Either you dirty flash the 2nd rom or copy the misc folder. It's the same thing.
Isn't it's easier to dirty flash rather copying and pasting things?
And success rate with this method is 100 % for every rom

It's the same thing mentioned in here

Either you dirty flash the 2nd rom or copy the misc folder. It's the same thing.
Isn't it's easier to dirty flash rather copying and pasting things?

Maybe.
Since after flashing the first rom, the only thing we're supposed to setup is the google account and no other user apps. Since we are dirty flashing the second rom, there's no messing with data partition. So chances of having bootloop is very low.

I used the guide below. Instead of formatting as ext2, I did ext4. Everything works rather well.

I don't think it failed. Once you add the partition, make sure you mark it active. Put it into the phone and reboot. Then recreate the mount scripts in link2sd and choose ext4. Reboot again and should be good. Partition master will say it's other when connected, that's just what it does...

I don't think you recreated the mount script, just remounted the drives. Regardless, if you followed my advice and the guide and still no luck, I don't have any more advice.

You're not on marshmallow, right? Link2sd doesn't work on 6.0

No I'm on OK3 I was previously on MM But downgraded to root. With all the guides I've went through only 1 guy seemed to find a fix using s2e. But the links were for different phones/builds

No, I found a fix by following that guide. You must be missing a step or glancing over something, or doing something otherwise incorrectly that would cause this to happen. A case of PEBCAK I'm afraid
