[Q] Having problems on call volume on the other side of the call - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, does anyone have same problem as I? Almost everyone I call is telling me they can hear me very low. I can hear them perfectly and all of the rest regarding sound volume is perfect.

Check to see if you have any gunk in the mic hole. I highly doubt that your mic is the issue.

I've got exactly the same problem. The phone is brand new, the mic hole is not blocked at all. I dont want to send it to service beacause it takes like 2 weeks to get it solved. Are there any service codes for sm-g900f to solve such issues? Any suggestions?

it happens to me sometimes. I am not sure if it is a fault in the handset or something else. normally it works fine, but yes I started getting complaints that my voice is far away after buying the S5 (happened to me 3 or 4 times within one month)

Try turning off Noise Reduction in the dialer settings menu. This will cause this type of problem for some people. The other TW builds that have it, also have a touchscreen button so it can be easily disabled while in-call but ours is buried in the menu.

Good deal.
I used to have a lot of problems with that feature on my Galaxy SIII.
But it didn't seem to affect everyone.

It has not solved mine, though. I noticed that if there is an app running in the bacground it worsens the case. Do not know why. Perhaps I will debrand my phone and change it to xeo.

[Q] Echo in calls

Does anybody else have problems where the person you call hears them selves talk? There voice is echoing!
Does flashing a custom rom stop this or is it because of the Crystal Talk stuff?
Thanks
It is possible that you're using speakers and the voice is so loud that they actually hear themselves? If you have not flash a custom rom and you're on official rom then no, you should ask the company to look into this if you still have the warranty.

It's not on loud speaker and the volume is at the lowest point. I only got it on Thursday arranged for it to go back.
Does it do it everywhere? I have had problems with all of my tmobile phones on occasion. Not sure why. My last phone used to do it all the time. Very annoying. Only had it happen once with the defy in the last month.

Never had it before with any phone I have owned. It's seems to be worse when i'm outside when the wind is hitting the second mic, also when this happens it sort of makes it sort of sound like i've got my head in a box when I talk. Hope that makes sense? Iv'e tried all the call quality settings but it's still the same. It has to be this Crystal Talk Type or what ever it is..
Thanks for the reply guys.
Our of curiosity, while this is happening, have you tried opening the usb cover to see if that changes the sound. There is at least one report of a "pressurized" effect on the Defy (as it's sealed) causing sound issues, relieved when the ysb cover or battery cover are removed.

hhmmmmm interesting, I did think about the hands free speaker being behind the battery cover when I tried calling someone and they said it was terrible echo.
I'll go and try it and let you know.
Thanks

Fix for low microphone volume

So, it seems I have finally found out how to adjust the microphone volume on the phone.
I have posted the instructions on my blog. If you try the solution it please respond if it works or not.
This might be veey interesting. I changed 88 to 100 but will only be able to talk to someone tomorrow.
From personal experience both sgs ans sgs2 have low treble input sent to peer. Ots annoying.
Posted from Galaxy S II
tried, we will see...
Interesting, there's an option for speaker receive volume too...
I tried it but it didn't work on audio recording (Hi-Q MP3 Recorder).
There is some way to adjust mic volume of voice recording?, My old SGS recordings were a lot louder than on my new SGSII.
Great thank you so much for the post. It helped me out.

MY SGS2 DOES NOT HAVE THIS VOLUME ISSUE! PEOPLE HEAR ME VERY WELL, SOMETIMES THEY ACTUALLY LOWER THE VOLUME IT IS SO LOUD!!!
Seriously, how much better does it get? I am not in a noise free environment at the moment, how big of a gain does this produce? Does this fix work with the genuine wired headphones?
i thought this fix was temporary only, after a phone reboot the fix resets to default ?

I must admit...in all the smartphone that i have ever used.....This is the only phone that i have never rebooted except when flashing roms/kernels etc...
I never reboot! I did today, because I wanted to calibrate the battery for the first time and I let it die. So I let it die after 24 hours of use, and then when it turned on it rebooted
I love my phone

It works but sadly as others have already mentioned, after a reboot, you have to re enter the settings, which is the only draw back, and am one of those who reboots the phone on a daily. Is there any way of making this permanent even following a reboot?. I can imagine its probably difficult, but thought I'd ask anywhere. Thanks op.
I'm actually looking for a way to lower the input gain, as my voice comes out distorted on the other side. Any clues? Besides the obvious "Turn 88 into something lower, I tried 70 and didn't work"
I don't know how the values can be saved so that they survive a restart. Personally I only restart my phone when it runs out of battery, or if I've done flashing that requries a reboot. If I need to disconnect from the real world airplane mode is used.
So, has anyone had any luck using this method? Seems to work for me.

That's quite the opposite problem Other than what you tried I have no idea. Sounds like a faulty device?

Actually, I tried 20 yesterday, and it did solve my problem!
Now sound is crisp and undistorted!
The question is,
1. How to make it stick reboot.
2. What do the rest of the volumes do? Vol0_1 0_2 0_3 etc, you suggested to edit number 5. Why specifically that one?
1. Still a mystery
2. My guess is that there are certain levels of output, and that all of them should be adjusted according to the other to have a linear line. The fact that I wrote that only 5 should be edited was simply because that worked for me.
First, great thanks hpe !!
I got my phone 2 days ago and got same problem.
ppl could not hear me well.
I tried your solution, hope it will help (tried 1-2 calls and seems ok).
I have noticed also that when you talk you should be
stable with your hand and your face , I mean,
it should be with fix distance between the mouth and phone, not important the distance but it should be stable during the call, if not the AGC comes up and down and the other side can't hear you well...
About save setting,
Maybe there is ini file or something (rooted phone) that can be changed to keep value after reboot, I have noticed in the 2 days I have the phone that I had to reboot phone after install application to get it works well.
I've follow the hpe solution but i still have volume problem
My specific problem is:
On Normal Mic call > very low volume... on my SGS2 with android 2.3.3
But with Speaker call > clear (no problem)
Very strange!! I can't be able to solve this problem.
I'd like to precise that with other voip app like bria or "csip simple" i have no problem, mic volume is perfect..

Speaker call uses different mic settings (since you've a higher distance between your mouth and the mic while using speaker), so it might just the "normal mic call" volume setting which fails.
I have understand and many thanks for your reply but it's strange that those settings works perfectly with the other voip applications..

Occasional Popping Noise When Using Screen?

Sometimes when i press the screen to select something(ie. opening an app), a noticeable popping sound is heard. It happens a few times a day but it sometimes gets annoying.
What is the cause of this, i know it's not the camera focusing element.
You sure that it isn't just the touch sounds?

Yeah its not the touch sounds, its pretty faint and happens maybe 3/10 times.
This happens to me too. Im convinced that theres something wrong with my speaker because the sound happens only when i click on something that is supposed to make a sound (except its doesnt because its on silent). It also happens right before an audio file is played

I'm afraid it's a speaker problem and not some kind of bug.
Even when the phone is on silent I hear the popping, very very annoying.
Its a hardware issue. I had it on my first n4 that I had RMA because of the screen.
My replacement device does not suffer from the issue.

Yep, same here - and I just replied to two other threads that sound like the same issue. One person said it happened after upgrading to 4.2.2. I think (and hope) this is a software issue. I just got my new Nexus 4 today, so I hope it's not a hardware issue.
This is happening to me. I thought I was going crazy lol.
Hey Guys,
Thanks for this forum first of all, its awesome. I joined especially for this issue because it seems lots of people have this problem. I noticed this problem when i got my phone yesterday. I have noticed that even when the phone is on silent, the speaker just turns on even though its not suppose to since touch sounds should be off. You can hear this by listening carefully to the speaker.
I got solved of the problem doing the following:
1. Go to settings.
2. Device -> Sound
3. Untick "Touch Sounds" option.
4. No more popping sound problem , although you dont have touch sounds.
It seems that even if you put your phone on silent thetouch sounds are active but dont produce sounds and keeps the speaker on when you press buttons. Might be software problem.
I hope this is helpful

I don't think that solves it. On mine, this occasional click happens with any sound (for example, go into settings for messaging to select an alert sound. If a sound has not been played for a while, the first sound you try will have the soft "click" right before it. Subsequent sounds will generally not have it. So I do not think it is related to only the touch sounds.
I'd guess that the reason it only happens when a sounds has not played "for a while" is that the sound hardware is being turned on right before the sound occurs.

Ohh ok, I guess I had another problem. My problem was that I would hear a soft pop even on silent when hitting buttons.
But after you mentioned the messing alert and hardware being turned on. I noticed it now. I think you might be right, they might be related to the sound hardware being turned on

Person on the other end hears their voice back --- Help

Guys, since my 6p, almost every call I make or receive, the person on the other end tells me that they are hearing what they said back. It's like an echo of what they said. I head them perfect and no issues on my end.
Anyone else having this issue?
And to add, I'm trying calls with and without case and it doesn't make a difference. Sometimes the echo for the person on the other end goes away after few minutes but most of the time it stays for the entire conversation. I also just today tried whatsapp call but same issue. Very frustrating as everything else on the phone is perfect.
I had this yesterday on WhatsApp
Any ideas? I sure can't be the only one out there with this issue.
It's a typical Google mic cancellation issue like the nexus 5 had. It will never be fixed.

Doesn't look so typical as Internet/forum search brings nothing being reported regarding this on Nexus 6p. Don't care what's on Nexus 5.
The problem is specific to callers on the other end of the phone hearing themselves back when they speak.
I have had the same issues. To fix I lower my volume all the way down then they say it's fine. The other option is to use speakerphone. I did read somewhere people are using their finger to cover the mic hole on the back. I'll try that today.

Here is the best temporary fix. Use a headset with a built in mic.
Also, calls over internet are more likely to get echo. Try a regular phone call, no Google voice and such either, just a regular sim number based call.

Covering the mic hole did help but if my volume was to high it would still do it. It's like the sound vibrations are getting picked up through the phone. Anyways I am rooted and romed. I may look into turning noise cancellation off.
I'm personally having this issue only when the back casing are attached to the phone or when i accidentally cover the back mic with my finger
Posting an update. It seems doing either one of the below fixes the echo callers on the other end are hearing:
1. Cover the mic at the back top of the phone during the call
2. Or Lower the volume to like half or three quarters of the way
I prefer option 2 and all is fine now.

Long term have you had issues in busy places like airports, bars/restaurants? Do people complain of too much noise around you with noise cancelling turned off?
the issue is still persist even after the June OTA. is there any way we can contact Google or Huawei to fix this issue permanently ?
I really love the phone but this issue is frustrating as it is a basic need in any phone. phone calls must be ok. how it can be fixed without root ?
It might be due to phones calls over the internet such as advanced calling on Verizon...I had this issue too a while back but I read somewhere this could be the issue do I turned off of advanced calling(calling over the internet so while I'm on a call I can use the internet over 4g). This is quite annoying since I sometimes do need to use internet while I'm on a call but I think the echo problem is worse.
So far no one has complained about an echo since I turned off advanced calling when before purplpeople would complain or stop talking about every call. Hope this helps

WhatsApp's voice notes are very quiet

Whenever I send a voice notes to someone on WhatsApp the result is very quiet and almost inaudible . It is not a problem with the microphone since during call (still on WhatsApp) I do not encounter any issue at all.
I saw people on the OnePlus forums experiencing this issue as well.
Is there any fix available?

Hey. I tested it out in my buddy's phone (A6013). Whatsapp is able to pickup my voice easily even after covering the top mic (since some prominent websites reported that some 3rd party apps were using the wrong mic in OnePlus phones). So it isn't a software issue and has to do with the hardware itself. Was it like this since you bought it?
I've got the same issue, I would need to put my volume close to top before I can hear my own voice but goes through fine and clear on other phones.

I have the same issue... not a hardware problem since its only happening using whatsapp ... and the mic volume is very low on audio and video messages. And as others stated, not hardware since it works good on other apps... and just to make it even clearer ... never had whats app installed before, (just less than a week old phone).
A6013 and 9.0.12 and build # A6013_41_190123
I also have something weird with Whatsapp when I receive a notification it's not easy to hear even I turned the volume up to max sometimes I can hear the notication from Whatsapp and feel it with the vibration too other times it's really low and I bearly even feel the vibration either.
I come from a iPhone 7 Plus where I could really hear and feel the vibration when I got a message on Whatsapp so maybe it's something with OxygenOS I also have the version A6013 and running OxygenOS 9.0.12.
