[Q] Battery drain on S3 (i9300) - SlimRoms Q&A

I don't know if I'm the only one who's noticing this but I just came off 4.3 TouchWiz onto SlimKat 4.4.2 (Build 5) and I'm noticing battery drain like crazy on my mobile. I thought it was bad on my previous stock ROM after the horrendous 4.3 update Samsung provided but this is worse. I used to get around 9-10 hours of battery life which has been reduced to around 6-7 hours now (I know it's not a HUGE difference but I'm not a fan of charging my phone twice a day). Overnight (despite leaving it on flight mode) the battery of my phone drops by 8 odd % in around 6-7 hours. Does anyone know the cause of this and can someone please help me?
Thanks

1. Switch off Google now.
2. Root.
3. Install Greenify + Donation Pack.
4. Greenify the intended apps.
5. Switch off Location.
6. Turn off animations.
7. Turn down the brightness.
8. Turn on the dark slim mode.
9. Switch to 2g.
With the above, I get 1+ day of battery on my i9300.

Read in other forums of other ROMs with 4.4.2 that battery drains with this KitKat version
Using omni ROM 4.4.2 battery drains on this too. Could it be Version specific problem ?

Going back to MJE.

Am I stupid? Just tired of the battery drain on nc4... My note 3 used to last all day EASILY.. i had it in my pocket with all apps frozen, location services off, power saving mode on, on eclipse, didn't even look at it and i got 4 hours off the charger . even had data off and had it on airplane mode for the last couple hours as it went from 74 to 5.... It just feels warm and drains for no reason.. no apps... I have heard it's a common issue I just don't see a reason to be on nc4 until it's fixed... Am I stupid or what? I swear that beans and clean rom and the old baja's used to have better service and MUCH battery life.. anyone else done this ?

There was a noticeable decrease in battery life going from 4.3 to 4.4 for me - even with Greenify, extreme battery saving measures taken. But it wasn't more than 4-10 hour difference --- so going from 75% to 5% in a couple hours indicates a huge problem. If I was in your shoes I'd fresh ODIN Bean's 4.4 then flash MJE then go from there if you have a favorite rom. I'm seeing 50% usage in 1 day with medium usage (probably light to medium for most). My dad is also on Bajarom with NC4 and he can get 2 days with 15% left with light to medium usage. That said, I do remember more on 4.3.
Commenting on radios: the problem I have MJE is that I can't get any WiFi throughput even with Radio_Power_Save 0 in build.prop. I wonder if that's why we don't see the best battery savings with MJE - wifi output/gain? is extremely low. NC2 fixed WiFi but I had 0 bars of LTE reception where I normally have 2 - instantly made it a no go for me. NC4 has a very noticeable WiFi throughput difference and better LTE signal - but not as good as MJE. I'd stay on MJE if it didn't make my WiFi completely useless.
Edit: As someone who has had smartphones since Droid 1 - I'm done with the days of trying to squeeze every inch of battery life out of my phone. The Note 3 was the first phone I felt I could use without making it unusable - meaning, using Greenify, keeping the phone off as much as possible, black backgrounds, just made the phone a bother vs actually using it and charging it whenever. So I bought a 14,000 mAh RavPower brick and my backpack has 2-3 RavPower 2.1A chargers (along with my wife's iPad charger) with 2-3 Monoprice cables so I can charge where ever, whenever. Now, I just use my phone as much as I want and when it hits 50% I plug it in --- which is 12-24 hours for me on average. I try to enjoy my phone instead of worrying about battery life.
----- that said if it was draining in 4 hours, I'd take drastic measures to fix it.... Buy an Anker battery replacement - see if the stock Samsung battery isn't going bad? And definitely re-flash everything via Download mode.

Great post man, thank you for sharing. I'm debating 4.4 again and trying it stock then maybe with eclipse or baja. i miss 4.4, but I haven't had a single problem on 4.3 i really haven't... you're probably right about not worrying about it so much and just enjoying the phone. I felt the same exact way, when I was on 4.3 .It lasted FOREVER. Got me through the day, didn't drain while I was at work, etc.... I did get an ankrum replacement, but even it only lasted 6 hours with no use on 4.4..... I may try 4.4 again and just hope the clean instal helped everything..

[Q] Which ROM provide best battery life ?

Hi, i would know which rom has the best battery life for the i9505.
I'm currently on DanVDH 5.0 Lollipop rom, which is awesome but the battery life isn't that good : With only wifi on, airplane mode on, brightness between 30-50%, and normal use (Chrome, sociak networks, some dl and videos), i can't get more than barely 3h30 of screen on time, sometimes 4 hours but not so often.
So, which rom (and maybe kernel) would you recommend ? I'd love to get at least 4 to 5 hours of screen-on time.
Im using the CM12 Lollipop 5.0.2 Build from Antares and got between 4-6h Screentime, without problems any way more usage as you.
Maybe your battery is ... dying?
It can't be the battery dying, it's a S4 black edition which isn't old.. And in stock rom it used to last way much longer :/

Fast battery drain when screen is on

Hi,
I have an LG G2 (for more than 18 months) which I really like (and still can't find a compact 5-5.2" smartphone to replace it with) but it seems that lately the battery drains quite fast when having the screen on.
Brightness is set at Auto + 50%, as always. The drain seems to be around 1% per 2 minutes. Screen is reported to consume about 50% of the battery. I don't think it would last more than 1.5-2 hours untill the battery drains completely. I noticed others getting like 4-6 hours of screen time.
I performed a factory reset and things look better overall but as soon as I use the screen the accelerated battery drain starts. I am using the 30b lollipop update, phone is 100% stock, no root.
Is this considered normal ? Should I attempt to replace the battery ? Is 18 month too much for it ?
Thanks !
Turn off the wifi when you are not using it. Whenever my wifi is on and connected my battery drains like crazy.
And i am rooted with exposed and power nap.
After i turn off my wifi my battery isnt draining at all.
Cheers

Thanks, but I always thought that Wi-Fi is much less battery intensive compared to the GSM data connection...strange.
Yeah it supposed to be like that, but our driver for wifi on lollipop is garbage
I'd recommend replacing the battery as well.
A healthy battery should produce the results you see others enjoy.
How is your performance with kit Kat and jelly bean?

Poor batter life

I changed from Note 3 to s 6 edge plus recently
The battery drops 5% per hour overnight when not in use. If I go to bed with less than 40% battery at night I am sure to wake up with my phone switched off in the morning.
When in use with screen on, the battery drips one percent every two minutes. This is the worst battery life I have ever seen in a phone. I was a long loyal customer of samsung and this is my last samsung phone ever.
Extremely disappointed
Please post your battery stats ? so we can have a better understanding of your problem. I suggest you install 'Doze' which should stop unnecessary apps from connecting to the internet and causing your phone to awake from deep sleep.
Dear Akbar 11
Heres the battery stats....is it normal?
I had the same issue, and as far as I managed to find out, it is a bug in Samsung's kernel. Flashing Arter97 kernel solved the issue for, but do post battery stats from SmartManager. If it says 'Android' or 'Android OS', then you have the same problem many of us do.
I don't think it's a kernel problem. My android OS is very low 4%. Like zoolok said post your battery stats from settings, battery, battery usage
I have the same problem. Battery was great before I flash custom rom. After going back to stock I have big battery draining. I must stay on custom rom. With Audax rom and Skyhigh kernel i have great battery life.
You have either messed up something big or you have an app in the background that is eating up your battery like no tomorrow.
And the reason i say that is because i recently got this battery life on my Galaxy S6 edge+.
And this was taken 2 days ago.
Here i use the CRISSCROSS ROM, AudaxPro Kernel, Greeinify and Samsung's own 'Appoptimizing' feature (same as Doze in Android 6.0).
So my battery life is pretty awesome.
i have problem whit battery lose 25% when i sleep
This is a usual day with s6 edge plus
Any help?

i have this problem battery ... if u fixed it tell me how?
Well I was expecting Google Play Services to be eating your battery (which is quite common) but it looks like your Andriod OS is eating the most battery. I would uninstall Facebook and use the web version it always helps with the ram and battery furthermore, turn off location if you are not using it and check accounts which are being synced. These are the only tips I can give you as I have never seen Android OS drain so much battery.
Since a few days Google Play Store is eating up my battery: I go to sleep with 100% batt and wake up with 50%, if I check batt stats on top I have play store at 45%, with 5h active a d 2h of CPU.
Follows Android system at 5%.
Going crazy why...

You've charged your phone 4 times during that day. I can't see what's the interesting part here.

Battery life on Android 7.0

Hi guys,
It's the first day of running Android 7.0, upgraded last night, off the charger at 10 AM. Now it's 2:40 in the evening and I have 28% left with 2h30m SOT till now, so I guess a ~3H SOT till the phone turns off. I find this pretty bad.
Are you experiencing the same problems? What's your first day SOT with N?
LOL!! give it time breh...... give your phone and kernel a few cycles to see how things go. Maybe report back on the weekend. That should be enough time for it to adjust to your usage
This helps me:
1. Flash stock recovery
2. Make a factory reset (save your files)
3. Setup your N6P
4. Enjoy
I am experiencing low battery life too. But that was the case on Marshmallow too until I installed the ElementalX kernel. It's an impressive kernel for sure, even when I installed it plain, without any customization of my own when it asks when installing it.
Looking to go back to elemental but only after giving Nougat's update and its kernel few more days to showcase its ability. Finger crossed!
Perhaps it's user/expectation error, OP. Give it time or do some maintenance wipes. I've been using the previews and battery life is very similar to MM, if not improved.
Sent from my Pixel C using XDA-Developers mobile app
I also experiencing battery issue here. previously when using MM, i got > 4 hours SOT. but after upgrading to 7.0, i only get about 3 hours SOT. when I see the battery settings, the Android System is consuming more battery than the screen. I never had experience like this in MM
do you guys also have the Android System consuming much battery?
I got 4 hours and 8 mins. SOT with battery remaining at 15%. This is with sync and high accuracy location switched on. I also played 1 hours and 15 mins of NBA Live during this period. That said this is using black pepper v2 profile on stock kernel.
So for me it's not bad, though a few more cycles would be ideal to give a concrete evaluation of battery life. Doze does seem to kick in a lot more now, and phone is really deep sleeping when on standby so I think the results are promising.
