Can we expect AOSP ICS for device ? - Galaxy Y GT-S5360 and Duos 6102 Q&A, Help & Troubl

CM 9.1 development might be slowed down or stopped for personal matters of devs. But can't we get AOSP 4.0 at least. I don't think it would be too much hassle to compile AOSP 4.0 as the drivers are already for that.
There are still many great devs in our SGY forum. Can't we try a little harder ?

spacecaker already compiled it and the touchscreen didnt work so it was abandoned and they moved onto cm9
the drivers were for graphics and not sound and so on

problem is, by the time i get ics in my first and favorite phone,i might already have a new phone(with kitkat)…
day by day, devs are abandoning our forum. and we keep waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting…
I'm not blaming them or creating any pressure on the dev but we just keep waiting…

simple answer to that - do it youself lol
some things just cant be done and others cant be done overnight and may take months or years to work out
even if the galaxy y does get a stable ics it is still only armv6 which will have limitations in terms of apps and games
If you want the latest now best buy a new phone because you will be waiting a long time for this phone and even then it probably wont be able to do what you want of it

As said before Aosp is like much harder then CM
CM has optimized code for lots of devices.
although cm9.1 seems dead we are still trying our best to solve and fix stuff
it isnt just something that can be done in a month or such

donation thread to encourage developers to make a gingerbread rom?

what do you guys think about starting this? id think it would stimulate rom development for our streaks. id be up for donating. i pitched the idea in the irc chat room hoping for some honest feedback, but i dont think djsteve wanted people stepping on his territory so he banned me from chatting. i was only trying to help! im sorry.
let me clear this up
i banned you as you were attempting to suggest that i am not working on gingerbread (i actually am if you had bothered to look at my twitter the last 2 days) and als osuggesting that all the working i have put into themeing is ugly and useless and tried to say that i shouldn be adding them, to which i told you to do it yourself then when you continued going on about it earned a ban, i never once said anything regarding gingerbread (other than its utter ****e anyway and not useful on the streak imho)
and to prove a point attached a screenie of 2.3 on streak
As Bounty,s never seem to work i will close this thread
i would like to apologize to djsteve. i didnt mean to imply that you werent working on a gingerbread rom, though you are giving me mixed feelings on the subject though with your latest comment. as far as i understood, you wherent planning on a gingerbread rom, and wasnt capable of producing one. i was just trying to get more developers in to help. i dont use twitter and havent seen yours in more 2 days so i didnt know what you where up to. could you just let me know next time without the name calling and bans. if it would help get gingerbread on, i could even donate money to you. i would work on it myself but ive had less than with success on building my own roms.
you can relock this thread, thanks for unlocking so i could apologize. youre a good moderator lufc.
i said i wudn be making a gingerbread rom as the changes required to the touchscreen driver to make it useable would not be worthwhile at that time, but the new alpha kernel dell let me have solves said issue
oh awesome. i just tried to check your twitter. theres so much on there i dont even know how to sort it. >_<
ok ill save you time, attaching the recent 2 pics i posted, the touchscreen driver has needed to be totally rewritten to work on 2.3+ so it would of not been worth my time to hack at previously is all i was meaning
Just curious, with the new touchscreen driver, does this make MIUI, Cyanogenmod, etc much easier to build? The alpha kernel supplies a big piece of the puzzle, correct?
Thanks for all your work. Hopefully it's proving to be rewarding
not really, the new driver only works on 2.3+ builds
At least with MIUI, you dont build it, you hack it. They dont release their sources so any ports to non-supported devices are hacked from the orig files.

Since you said that the new drivers are from an alpha kernel Dell let you have, does that suggest that Dell will continue to support our Streak and maybe even release an official Gingerbread or HoneyComb rom? Or do you think that Dell may supply you with any HoneyComb supported drivers? Also, thanks for all your hard work DJ_Steve.

Cyanogen on our Gen8?

I want to start the ball rolling!
Hey,
So now we have a cracked bootloader, so why we aren't port cyanogen to our tabs?
The Nook have Cyanogen, and its architecture is pretty the same as gen8
the only difference i know is that our toucscreens are connected by an USB Controller..
but the cyanogen source is open! so a dev can change it and get it to us
I'm not a developer, but why developers aren't port cyanogen mod
i just don't understand it.
We'll see Gingerbread (2.3.3) on our Tablets
Maybe Sauron could think about Gingerbread/Cyanogen in a Future release of Urukdroid?..
I hope we get, finally , a working port at our tabs ( Luisivan`s HC Port just doesn't worked because the problem with the touchscreen )

Well, firstly the bootloader hack was only posted 3 days ago. I am no developer either, but I would imagine it takes longer than that to port anything.
Secondly, the developers here on XDA are all people with real lives, doing this stuff in their spare time for their (and our) benefit. They don't get paid for it, and we have no right to expect/demand anything from them.
Thirdly, changing 1 byte in the stock recovery is a far cry from creating a custom recovery, which again takes time, energy and knowledge.
Don't misunderstand, I'm not flaming you here, just saying that a degree of patience might be come in handy right now. These things will come when the devs have the time to look into it.
Until then, just enjoy the huge benefits their hard work has already given us compared to stock.
sorry...
I don't want to insult any devs.., you did a great job
when i did this ↑↑↑↑↑ i am very sorry.
Yeah fisha i know what you mean, but i get angry when i think of the fact, that every damn android device gets an rom/hack/update. Even the oldest android device in the world has an honeycomb rom!
and we - owners of ones of the best android devices - stay at dark!
(okey we have a little bit of light and i thank sauron/artadat/silentrazor so much for that )
This upset me extremly! This is the only problem i had with Archos Products!
I was so happy, when i was heard that Archos Gen8 has an own Xda Forum in January
(Archosfans Forum is horror)
I just want to know that you guys :
Xda developers are the best android developers in the world
But we have to do something about the archos problem...
I do understand, the problem is just that the Archos isn't a very popular device. More people have the Nook etc, so more devs involved. There is some useful stuff on Archosfans, but much less in the way of development, that's true.
To be honest, when I bought my 101 in December, I thought I'd be waiting much longer to get to this stage....it will happen, just give it time. Or, do what I'm doing and start reading up on Android development, get your feet wet with some basic stuff, and who knows, you might be the one that brings us the next big thing!
Yeah i'm lucky about this too
I want it but i'm german i think you've already noticed that^^
And there're dont good german android development stuff
you're american?
I think that a future hypothetic Cyanogen port to archos will leave us without the GREAT archos video player and all the codec stuff they have on CLOSED development... so, we gotta wait and see the performance of our tablet with a "generic" set of codecs, for example...
Anyway... I'm very excited for the latest news of the recovery crack and happy to know that finally we are in position to have a CM port for archos ... with CW Recovery and all the stuff most android devices already have...
Yes,I am also deep wish and appreciated that Devepoler in ARCHOS Gen8 XDA forum could update more custom ROMs in the near future which will make the ARCHOS GEN8 more popular than before.
For example:There are many Dev. updated the custom ROMs of Huawei IDEOS u8150 in XDA forum(refer to : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970832 ) and users are very happy to upgrade and enjoy the updated custom ROMs everyday!!
I don't know many things about rom cooking, but if someone can teach me how to do i would be happy to do a custom rom for our Archos

Honestly, I have started using VitalPlayer. It plays AC3 and has a better sync between audio and video when using an OC kernel. So if we have to move to another Mod which loses us the stock player, its not that great a loss.

ICS or not ICS: that is the question

As in title, can we hope to see Ice Cream Sandwitch on our Tattoo sooner or later (maybe through CyanogenMod)? The Android team said that EVERY phone that had Gingerbread can have ICS: it's the same for the Tattoo or it's not doable due to the limited hardware (I also mean screen size)?

i really hope we can see this happen
but for now i think it's to early to say. high end phones have no info yet, so we gotta be very patient ICS source is not out yet...
so for now, we are happy that we have 2.3.7 which isn't on many high end devices
this is a nice read
http://www.androidcentral.com/ice-cream-sandwich-what-happens-next
We have to wait until Google releases the source-code. After that, we can see if our device will be able to run ICS
I have actually given up the hope to upgrade my tattoo further than 2.3.7, because I don't feel that my phone can use the new features in 4.0 so what's the point ^^ GPU Accelerated UI and better dual core support isn't very much for the tattoo. The ride with my tattoo has however been really nice, and it was a really good way to get introduced to android Galaxy Nexus here I come?

Hi Guys,
What do you think about this?

Looks like there's a chance to get ICS in our Tattoos
I have checked it yesterday.
stelios97 has ported it to both X10 mini and wildfire,
so there is very good chance that we can have ics miui for tattoo.
But then I wonder, is there any dev still holding a Tattoo to help us.
Would be really nice to have MIUI on our tattoo.
It would even be better than having ICS!

The other day I read that 2.3.7 source for MIUI was released
http://shrewdgeek.com/2012/02/04/xiaomi-makes-miui-gingerbread-2-3-7-open-source/
all we need is to get it compiled for ARM v6
Where are the developers for tattoo roms?
Arco? Kalimocho? rallapag? you've also done some ports, didn't you?
can someone port MIUI to our tattoo?
i don't know much about android rom development, but i think it wouldn't be much more work to port this miui rom than port some sense roms. a wildfire version is already available.
Its more some driver related things, i think
can someone try it please?
Hi .dot
You know, I am not a dev.
What ever I do, I am afraid it will be incomplete like my sense 2.3 rom port.
We need a real dev, unfortunately Arif-ali as well gave up working on Tattoo yesterday has indefinitely stopped android development.
ics
i really hope that there will be a new rom.cause i´m a little bored with my tattoo and the nfinity-rom. i hope that the dev will start to work on it..it would be fantastic!PLEASE

Nexus S & ICS 4.0.3 - What do you think of it ?

Beeing using the Nexus s I9020T with ICS for a while now, tought i share what i think of them working together. this is not a technical review with scores and such so please don't expect such information here. in fact i'm not going to mention any of the developers, kernel or ROM names here.
Background
Had Nexus one, when the Nexus S arrived i sold it and bought the NS.
I really liked the N1 and it was not easy to let it go, i liked how it felt in my hand and it was a good device... anyway... i tried many roms (almost any ROM and Kernel that were available at that time) with the N1, and then with the NS. these two devices had almost any ROM flashed to them day and night.
Almost there
at the beginning there was no official ICS rom for the NS nor even a full SDK source
but some PORTS where around so i had to try them out.
liked the way it looks but that's it. no stability, many bugs. not for daily use... not even for a night use. going from one build to another didn't make any difference. for example: none of the PORTS managed to activate the Bluetooth device. there was a missing driver (binary) and none of the developers managed to overcome the problem.
ICS SDK
At first a full SDK was released. Builds were a bit better but not enough.
still couldn't use it every day and always had to go back to 2.3.7
at this point i thought: "well i guess i'l have to wait for google to release an official OTA update and then i'll see some real action right ?"
well that was not just a thought but more like logic with a bit of knowing how google usually works. i thought that when google will release an official version for the NS it will probably run smoother because it will have hardware acceleration and google will put a new kernel, and they will make sure it runs well
ICS OTA
"What a great day" i stupidly thought to myself. "finally a new version for my device" i was so stupidly proud (like i made this phone or something) anyway...
i just went from smiling to almost crying ... "Thats it ?" i yelled at it (my NS) "Is that all you got ? What is going on here ? is this for real ? it can't be ... the update.zip file must be fake ! (didn't really think it was a fake...) it can't be it ? this is it ? this is ICS ? slow, unresponsive, slow, and slow ? that's all there is ? and in addition to that it was very very slow...
"ICS Roms"
Used all custom ICS roms available and any tweaked kernel that i found. yet,
still too slow for me...
my current Rom and kernel are the fastest i could find and don't get me wrong it is stable,no bugs and i use it daily. but after using gingerbread for so long, i guess i got use to the speed too much, after using it for a week, i'm starting to get use to it i can't say that it is great for me now... but i'm not giving up !
Calling All Devs
Hopefully we will start seeing some tweaked kernel and optimized custom roms soon. for now my NS will rest ... just for now...

ICS leak usefulness

I've got a question I tried to answer myself, but I couldn't resist to post it on the forum.
Is the ICS leak a great step forward for all Atrix users ?
For those who wanted HWA, fingerprint scanner, working camera, of course it is... But is it a step forward for the release of a STABLE CM10 with a STABLE kernel ? This question is more open to a debate than a simple answer.
This leak didn't provide any option for those who have the wrong tegrapart (Mine is OK), or a lapdock, or those who use Chrome and want a generally reliable ROM (Stability, I/O perfs, battery life). They have to make a compromise but we still didn't reach THE ROM(s) that makes everybody happy.
The missing thing to get the ROM(s) that will make us all happy is the kernel source... Why didn't we get it with the ICS leak ? Well let's exclude this question from this thread and maybe talk about it after this debate is (almost) closed.
Personally I'm happy to have this new ROM, it's fast, smooth etc. but my lapdock is still borked so I'm really frustrated not to have this awesome tablet display that works with EVERYTHING but not MOTOROLA's own peripheral... Damn it !
So, what's your case ? Of course you may have found satisfaction with the ICS leak, but are you as frustrated as I am to be this close to the ultimate goal ?
The debate is open, I hope I broke the ice for some people who are in my case and feel like forgotten.
I think that leak does not come with the source code. Thus there will not be any practical improvement right now.
Or, most likely ever. I doubt things will go much farther, and I'm usually the optimistic one
no chance
nope, i think the ics leak was just a one off leak from what motorola actually got round to doing before they abandoned the project, which personally is really bad the roms are just crappy (no offence to developers but the lack of resources means they will always be crappy), everyone says the roms are good but every ics rom iv used is awful, overheating, bugs, battery life sucks, cameras lag, and doesnt compare to a stable cm7 which works completely fine and does everything ics can do anyway.. hmm... i guess everyone just keeps giving themselves false hope, although the possibility of a stable ics is much more than the chance of jellybean & as for the cm10/jellybean thing dont get your hopes up the signs of HWA are non existent and i really dont think they ever will be unless somebody makes a kernel from scratch which for a mobile device would take endless hours of work and testing each boot would probably get your through about 50 atrix phones from hard bricks etc... and i dont think our developers have the time or money to do so... even with donations.
its just not worth it, the atrix is a dying breed if you dont like cm7 then buy a new phone, its that simple, confuses me why everyone acts like cm7 is some sort of bugged crappy software that doesnt work? yet its still a very stable software.
i think everyone should stop concentrating on ICS and jellybean until we actually hear news that will be helpful to creating a stable build and in the mean time focus on improving cm7 with mods and other things, right now cm7 is basically abandoned and the thing its been abandoned for has been on hold for around 3 months.

Its not that simple. Once you've had a taste of Android 4.X, its nearly impossible to go back. I'm stuck on Epinter's CM10 because of that, every time I try switching back to a CM7 based rom I find it randomly jittery and with a lot of small annoyances. Both of which I never noticed before trying Joker's CM9.
Even when I switched from CM7 to CM9, I remember CM7 was more or less perfect in its current state. Work stopped on it because there's not much else that can be done with it. Its hit its peak, and for those not spoiled by the more polished versions of Android it is indeed the ideal rom for our device. That does not mean work should stop on ICS/JB, though. The big issue we have is the kernel, of which there are several projects in the works to port kernels from other devices. Its something that'll take (a lot of) time, but long term it'll be much better for our devices than making barely noticeable changes to Gingerbread roms.
With that said, you are right in that the ICS leak is more or less useless without source code. Crappy battery and display issues on some variants of Atrix completely ruin it.
Having the kernel source would solve many issues, but after Motorola abandoned the device it's very unlikely they'll commit any more resources into releasing the half working source code. Of course we'd like to see the source released as it existed under development, but from what I understand, the the source that gets released isn't always exactly the same as what they work with when they compile it and things like extremely helpful comments in the code get removed because of things like NDA's. And although many of the libs and drivers can be extracted from the ROM, the code to use them has been lost.
As it stands, the Atrix Rebirth Project is probably the best chance for seeing a fully functional kernel source for ICS and beyond. But as has been pointed out already, interest in the device has been dying, and even if the project does manage to make it happen, it's not going to happen overnight.

hmm i used pinters cm10 for a week and went back to MROM cm7 and customised it to my liking with ICS themes and text changers, looks just like ICS runs just as smooth as a buggy JB rom, thats the problem the performance of CM10 roms without HWA is about the same as a good CM7 rom... just with a few features like google now which nobody really uses anyway, although i understand where your coming from when it comes too the UI and animations on JB roms they are very nice but id rather sacrafice them and have a phone that will work 100%
I'm very naive to the inner workings of android
I also returned to mrom from epinters cm 10 and icsrom because of lack of camcorder or terrible battery life.
Now with mrom I have a very smooth launcher and all apps working. I do miss jellybeans nice interface, but what are the more fundamental improvements that gingerbread lacks? Besides feeling outdated and old of course :/

Zero usefulness. Novelty item at best.
It's interesting to read opinion of no-developers is it something useful or not. Only developers could say something about it. Also most of you are so pessimistic, complaining that developing is dying.
xda-developers is for site and forum for developers. If you think that developing is dying, come on, do something about. Join Atrix Rebirth Project, start to learn how to develop kernel and rom. There is a lot of guides here and on Internet. Instead of spending time on forum and waiting that someone else do it for you and for free. If you don't have time to learn, contribute on another way: support developers, donate money or device, try to find solution, use your contacts to get leaked sources...
The easiest way is to buy a new device and start complain after a while
I have been very pleased with the stock GB rom. I have a Nexus 7 and an old HTC Aria, both running the latest version of JB and, other than a more up-to-date appearance, there's really nothing I can't do on the Atrix that I can do on the JB devices.
Its amazing what the developers have been able to do with the HTC Aria. It has very little memory, but they have created virtually unlimited program memory by using an extended partition on the SD card. The Aria also runs JB almost flawlessly.
If JB could run on the Atrix 4G the way it runs on my Aria, I would use it. But from what I've read, it has a long way to go. I am not even sure I would even be able to root my Atrix, which has the latest GB update from Motorola.

Yeah right ! talking about this leak ... is a >small< step foward !
Just imagine Michael Montuori out of here, Or the Bill ?! epinter !? Faux, or jocker that has made a wonderfull job and the other in the early days of the atrix .... all source code builder out of this atrix family at once !
Well ... Motorola doesnt have a great support for the moment ! as their Blur OS is ****ty slow ! :S
I own a Car dock, A HD Multimedia Dock and a great lapdock !
I approve that this is still frustrating (and i know the devs out there are NOT getting Paid enough for a better work than MOTOROLA itself,) that motorola own product doesnt have support yet ! but still have on a direct DHMI cable straight to the tv !! WTF ?!?!!
Well, its not going to change anything here, i mean this thread ... but .. well .. you know ! YEAH its awkward and " fais chier bordel" hahaha
Our devs are GREAT but unfortunately, we still need that damn MOTO support for their drivers source for the new OS :S
Meanwhile

I would even say "Bordel à couilles de constructeur de mes deux !". I'm writing this using my lapock... On my tiny screen, with my main screen at 45° so I can still read what I'm writing. I dreamt about WT3.0 with working LAPDOCK, it would have been so gorgeous, but it's currently not happening. "Nique cette merde !", I'm buying a Windows Phone next year when the ecosystem gets more apps and stuff. The news are getting warmer for this OS ! The amazing keyboard made in WP7/8 will replace my lapdock I use as a keyboard.
Development IS actually dying, look at the Atrix 4G development section where there used to be several ROMs under active development there are now just a few. Nearly everything that can be done has been done with the exception of what the Atrix rebirth project is doing. But there is no guarantee of success. If you have the money or a device to donate to the rebirth project, great, by all means go for it. Maybe one of the other tegra based moto devices might help a bit too. Unfortanately I think it's pretty hard to hold any level of optimism for the device after such a long string of let downs.

I see the ICS leak as interesting but not overly useful.
Now, if they'd also leaked the source code, I don't doubt that the devs could have created a fully-features and stable ICS/JB within a couple of months. However, with no source for such a buggy leak, we're reliant on a few people trying to create a kernel almost from scratch. I wish them well, but I'm not holding my breath...
When you feel like the development is hopeless , waste all of your time and try fixing things yourself get a new phone.

Like you? And you think that you're smart. That's exactly what vendors wish, get a new device. Bravo
Edit: With your latest posts in Atrix forum you're the same as maggedo or member with Atrix in name. Ups, you have Motorola
How long N4 will be the best device for you? What I see not so long
I think it's interesting how people work:
First everyone was crying about the fact, that Motorola left us out in the cold and now that we have a actually really good leak, people cry that it's not good enough... That's just sad. The leak is useful and it's a big step into the right direction. A lot of people put in hours of work for you (and for FREE!!!), to make this leak better. All you need is PATIENCE. Be grateful that some devs stick to this EOL-device and provide great work for us.
-Just my 2 cents-

And... What about people who can't get a new device ? I bought mine like 6 months ago, it was for my birthday and I can't waste money on a newer phone like this.
But there must be some kind of "break-even" ahead.
How many hours of work and energy may be put from the most "valuable brains" into the leak (without having sourcecode), until they must decide: "enough is enough, it just will never turn out as "stable"?
From what I've understood there exists some good chances that maybe some day valuable parts of the XOOM kernel get migrated to the Atrix (see respective thread under development area).
May the last remaining devs of a dying device - whose work I greatly respect and appreciate! - join forces and turn more efforts into porting the xoom?
