[Q] for use on AT&T...T-Mobile S5? Google Play HTC M8? HTC M8 Dev Edition? [/Q] - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I've owned a Samsung S4 (AT&T branded), a Nexus 5 (GPe), and currently own an LG G2 (AT&T branded) and Moto G (GPe). Admittedly, while the Moto G is an awesome device to test apps and develops them on, I'm looking to gift it to a family member and purchase the best unlocked BOOTLOADER smartphone out there. If the S5 were in the play store, I'd get it right away, but right now I haven't even seen a 32GB version that will run all AT&T LTE bands.
So, here are my options: S5 (T-Mobile off-contract), M8 (Google Play Edition), or M8 (HTC Dev Edition). An unlocked bootloader is absolutely necessary if I'm going to shell out that much money. Also, up for consideration instead of getting any of these phones is a Samsung S4 (Google Play Edition). The only reason I'm looking into the S4 is because I have so many accessories for it, it would be a shame to let them go to waste, especially if it means buying a much cheaper and still powerful phone without having to buy new accessories for the device (case and whatnot). I've heard the S5 is only marginally better than the S4 and in some reviews, aside from the camera quality, the M8 is said to be better. I favor all 3 of these devices because they allow the use of an external SD-card. Ideally, the S5 would be 32GB available in the Play Store, but that apparently isn't going to happen anytime soon and Samsung only has a CDMA (Verizon) developer edition of the S5 available.
So, what does everyone vote on? I'll create a poll, but any reasons you can provide will be much appreciated since I'll hopefully learn more about each device.
Thanks everyone! Looking forward to your replies.

at&t 32gb gs4 vs. google gs4...

any reason to get an at&t 32gb gs4 to utilize when google releases the google edition gs4? it would be nice to have a 32gb phone with AOSP on it. rumors are the bootloaders have been unlocked but nothing released yet so other gs4's coming out soon will have their day too.
i haven't seen anybody else ask this but i am sure some people are curious too.

US T-Mobile S4 (SGH-M919)

Hey guys, thinking about signing up for a new family plan and getting either a Nexus 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S4. From my understanding, no one has ported ASOP onto the T-Mobile version yet (SGH-M919). I absolutely HATE touchwiz, I'd want to put Jellybean 4.2.2 on from day one. If this isn't possible, I'll settle for the Nexus 4.
I'm really digging the hardware specs on the S4, and the memory expansion slot/larger battery is really catching my attention.
What do you guys think?
EDIT : got the HTC One!

[Q] Verizon Delevoper Edition.

All,
Last year samsung released their developer VZW N2 in 6-8 weeks.
Any info on the N3 dev edition ( 16 or 32 GB - I assume it will be black) ?
Any possible issues with availability of the device ( the S4 was out of stock for "months").
I see that there is not much hope that devs can crack this device after release -last year N2 was jailbroken in less than 14 days after release
Update:
Black ,32GB ,storage, 3200mah
Reps are saying first part of nov.
Lets see which developers will support this device

VZW is only offering the 32 GB version, I really argued with them about it and got transferred to their marketing department that makes such decisions, had to leave a message and nobody called me back of course. I would assume a Dev version would be 32 or 64 but there's no way you'd see a 16GB version. Maybe the 64gb version is not available because (I read this somewhere on XDA) only the 32gb version supports LTE. The non - LTE chip requires more memory to give the same performance as the 32gb LTE version.

Aha,
thanks.
We will call u back.sure.
I am assuming that that dev edition will be avail soon - a couple of weeks after the mainstream edition. 64 would be nice, but oh well..
If dev cannot crack this open I will have to wait for the dev edition. Safe strap works on S4 but if prefer the real unlock.
N2 was (is a beast) as far as development goes.
any heads up for the timeframe of release?
thanks
abe
Verizon's GN2 Developer Edition went up mid December last year so who knows it could come sooner. But don't expect a 64GB version we won't get it.

So a couple of weeks of extra wait. I want to wait to see if the reg edition gets jbed then get it if not get a dev ed.
Still hugging that unlimited. For now.
Thanks
If you buy a Verizon Developer Edition through Samsung, can you still get the Asurion insurance through Verizon?
In the past when I changed phones on my account I simply updated the info with Verizon so they could or should know what I was covering/insuring with them. So long as the phone is functioning at the time you add it you "should" not have any issues.
Do we know for sure vz will be getting a developer edition? I haven't heard a thing about it.
Ive read rumors on interwebs saying both will and wont get dev edition. I withdrew my preorder to wait and see if we can get it unlocked. I have faith in adam outler. He seems good at sticking it to verizon. If dev edition comes out first I'll go that way. I've experienced safe strap and theres nice features and drawbacks to it. Unlocked is definitely worth the wait

He is amazing...BUT...he hasn't unlocked the s4. I don't think we will see an unlock anytime soon. I would be satisfied with safestrap...but I'm not sure it could be done with Knox.

Adam stated in a post recently that he is done with Samsung products and is advising everyone to go with a different brand phone.
I was all set to pre-order an N3 and sell my mint N2, but after realizing all the downsides of a phone locked up that tight I decided to stick with the N2 for now.

Hi John,
did Adam mentioned why not get Samsung? N3 has the best oled screen on the market. Any other phablet with "better" custom rom support?
Thanks
Abe

I don't think there will be a Dev edition. Unfortunate.... I think I'm gonna give the g2 a try..a Lil smaller than I want....but its not locked down.
My plan is to buy the retail version then sell it if the Dev drops or return it if there is an announcement within two weeks.
For those with more Patience it might just be worth the wait!

I'm with ya on that I'm just gonna buy the Note 3 and let the devs work their magic. I'm sure they'll be able unlock it or at least have a work around like kexec. But if all fails I'll just sell mine to a stock user and go for the developer edition.

Adam is done with samsung devices...especially since they went back to qualcom processors. If the N3 had a Exynos processor Relekdev might have a chance. However Qualcom processors utilize qfuses, which once blown, make unlocking a encrypted bootloader about 99% impossible.

Same here...the N2 is still holding its own very well. I am going to hold off and see if a dev edition shows up.

yes it is. the difference is that it has access (currently) to loki, a tool that will allow a development community to grow, however it can and will be patched.

Razr HD to Note 3?

Hey everyone, I am seriously considering switching from my razr HD to a note 3, just wondering though, whats the big differences with touchwiz? I am used to motorola's near stock OS but want the pen and other features along with better specs of the note. I am planning on buying the unlocked version and getting a ATT sim from strait talk and using it that way.
Just want to have some advice going towards samsung as my last experience with the galaxy prevail was poor but that was a budget phone.

Moto G5 Plus recommendations

Hey guys! Don't kill me for asking all these questions, but..
I'm currently using a Nexus 5x, but it's gone bad (Melts chargers, usb data connection melted, etc)
I'm really interested in the Moto G5 Plus, but, I'm having difficulties finding it in person, so i intend to order one online!
So my questions go:
I have only seen two varients, a 32GB-2GB, and a 64GB-4GB. Is this it? Are they all "Potter" And will work with this rom?
Is the bootloader difficult to unlock? i see some kind of scrubber and pasting of data on a website i found.. seems kinda simple but i wanna be sure ♥
Is it safe to buy one on Amazon? The 32GB Variant is currently on sale. Is it safe to use the "Moto Maker"?
I see "DTV for XT1683 model" is broken. What is "DTV" and which model is XT1683?
Thanks for your consideration! ♥
EDIT: Too late, bought the 64GB Varient from Amazon. Wish me luck!
I just picked one up for my wife and have been pleasantly surprised. Of course we are coming from 3 yr old phones, so anything is an upgrade. Having the finger print reader, fast charge, adequate camera (certainly better than the LG G3 camera), unlockable boot loader, etc all for $180 for the non ad 32gb version I feel it is an incredible bargain.
I hope you got the non-ad version from Amazon as you cannot unlock the boot loader on the ad version. That is the only issue to watch out for. You can get rid of the ads on the ad version, but there is currently isn't a method to unlock the boot loader (and likely never will be).
Enjoy!

Which G5 Plus did you buy? The cheaper Amazon subsidized version or the slightly more expensive non amazon subsidized version?
If you bought the Amazon subsidized version just note that the root process will likely be different than the non subsidized version. See this link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-plus/help/resolved-root-moto-g5-plus-amazon-t3652932
Its a good phone with one or two issues however. Moto is apparently rolling out today a potential fix (see this post in their support subforums) for the poor/garbled audio on Verizon, no word yet if it works or if it fixes any of the other issues (like low volume on headset) the phone has.
