Moto G5 Plus recommendations - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Hey guys! Don't kill me for asking all these questions, but..
I'm currently using a Nexus 5x, but it's gone bad (Melts chargers, usb data connection melted, etc)
I'm really interested in the Moto G5 Plus, but, I'm having difficulties finding it in person, so i intend to order one online!
So my questions go:
I have only seen two varients, a 32GB-2GB, and a 64GB-4GB. Is this it? Are they all "Potter" And will work with this rom?
Is the bootloader difficult to unlock? i see some kind of scrubber and pasting of data on a website i found.. seems kinda simple but i wanna be sure ♥
Is it safe to buy one on Amazon? The 32GB Variant is currently on sale. Is it safe to use the "Moto Maker"?
I see "DTV for XT1683 model" is broken. What is "DTV" and which model is XT1683?
Thanks for your consideration! ♥
EDIT: Too late, bought the 64GB Varient from Amazon. Wish me luck!

I just picked one up for my wife and have been pleasantly surprised. Of course we are coming from 3 yr old phones, so anything is an upgrade. Having the finger print reader, fast charge, adequate camera (certainly better than the LG G3 camera), unlockable boot loader, etc all for $180 for the non ad 32gb version I feel it is an incredible bargain.
I hope you got the non-ad version from Amazon as you cannot unlock the boot loader on the ad version. That is the only issue to watch out for. You can get rid of the ads on the ad version, but there is currently isn't a method to unlock the boot loader (and likely never will be).
Enjoy!

Which G5 Plus did you buy? The cheaper Amazon subsidized version or the slightly more expensive non amazon subsidized version?
If you bought the Amazon subsidized version just note that the root process will likely be different than the non subsidized version. See this link: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-plus/help/resolved-root-moto-g5-plus-amazon-t3652932
Its a good phone with one or two issues however. Moto is apparently rolling out today a potential fix (see this post in their support subforums) for the poor/garbled audio on Verizon, no word yet if it works or if it fixes any of the other issues (like low volume on headset) the phone has.

Some questions before I order?

I am very excited to order a new Moto G4 Plus, it will be a replacement for my One Plus X which was stolen about 6 weeks ago.
Amazon UK have the following listing:
Motorola Moto G4 Plus 16GB Dual SIM-Free Smartphone - White - Exclusive to Amazon for £199 (€221/$248)
The Dual SIM would be useful for my work number, but not at the price of a white phone!
Am I correct the Moto G4 Plus cannot be bought for that price dual SIM in black?
If so would it be possible and cost effective to order that white dual SIM model and a black front and back bezel?
Otherwise I was thinking of ordering this model:
Motorola Moto G4 Plus 16GB SIM-Free Smartphone - Black (Single SIM) - (Exclusive to Amazon) for £199
Unless there are issues with heat or performance with that model and I should consider a 3GB RAM model instead? I have a 128GB Sandisk MicroSD card so I thought I could get by with 16GB of on board memory...

Thanks, I think I would pay the £30 for the bump from 16GB to 32GB, in black, and dual SIM. I do not see anywhere on that page it is dual SIM, are you absolutely certain it is?

This may not be relevant considering the reasons you're upgrading from OPX, but given my few days experience with OPX you'd miss its fantastic OLED display on MOTO G. At the cost of sounding discouraging, being a current Moto G4 plus user I'd recommend considering another phone for your intended purpose of upgrading. This is based on my two month rigorous use and finding far too many issues with Moto G4 plus for its hype. For one, unless you aren't fond of dedicating a few hours each day flashing ROMs and tweaking settings or installing mods, heating-up and ghost touch issues, apart from Moto G's build and design are not easy to accept for the price you pay for this fourth moto G iteration which is far from its predecessors' in terms of quality and performance.
As for the memory, going from 16 to 32 gig is surely worthwhile though only if there weren't other 32Gig phones out there offering better performance at prolly more competent prices.
Sorry if I sound sore, but couldn't help being honest with what I've learned from buying this phone.

Oh, I had thought the heat issues were resolved!
I actually ordered a few days go, Motorola's website told me so, but then sent me an email saying it was cancelled. I queried this with support and they told me it was because my bank declined the transfer, but I spoke with my bank and they said Motorola never tried to take the money!
I just ordered again about an hour ago...
What phone would you recommend instead? I was pretty set on the Moto G4 Plus

I don't have a G4 Plus but I do have a G4 XT1625. It blows my previous Moto G2 out of the water in performance, battery life and reliability. No major issues at all on stock or with the custom ROM I now use. I have been using it for about two months and couldn't be happier with it.

And why not shoot yourself in the foot at the same time? Do you not read the news? The Note 7 has had more issues than any phone in the history of smartphones. Samsung has lost over $2 billion due to Note 7 issues and recalls. Even the replacements for the original recalls have been pulled off the market. Avoid the Note 7 like the plague.

That was the laughing smiley for.
Okay, so it seems most would recommend their Moto G4 Plus.
Another 'Moto-maker' order cancelled by Motorola UK. After speaking with 3 technical support agents through their web based Live Chat, and being unable to get a clear answer from either one of them, I phoned and spoke with someone whose first language was actually English, and they explained the orders were cancelled because I was using a redirection service.
As I am in the Republic of Ireland I cannot order directly from Motorola UK, instead I tried using the same forwarder I always use for this kind of thing, but it is blacklsited by Motorola UK. Not sure what to do now, I really want a black dual SIM 32GB G4 Plus, but I do not want to pay Amazon an extra £39 for the privilege! It would be a real shame if I had to instead opt for the black single sim 16GB model from Amazon.
I am not sure what to do now, perhaps see if any family have friends in the UK that would manually forward it.
Sorry about that, I wasn't aware you'd already ordered for one, could have toned down the bad stuff I've had to say.
I guess, having shopped around a bit, doesn't look like there's much to choose from if I were to get a different phone, besides to be more honest my budget won't allow an upgrade just as yet. So guess I'll live with it for now and while my time away installing and uninstalling programs to squeeze out whatever good I can from my Moto G4 Plus.
And yes, majority moto g4 owners do seem to be swearing by their phones, that should ideally suffice to join their lot, besides making it worth buying considering there's going to be no dearth of dedicated forums and communities and such.

FWIW, there are things I'd like to see like NFC, a magnetic compass and water repellent like the G3 but all in all it's a pretty solid phone for the price. Oh yea, it doesn't have the built-in heater like some Samsung phones but I can live without that.

Help me pick the best version of this phone Ting or Amazon?

Hi, I was about to buy 2 of this phones when I just noticed both amazon and ting have a sale going on for it right now. I did the math and after shipping and taxes for both phones would cost about the same except for the fact that if I buy the phone from amazon I would get ads but one of the phones would be 32gb instead of 16gb.
My question, is there anything I should consider about these phones from the rooting/unlocking/removing ads/custom roms/partitioning of the internal memory perspective compared to the other one?
I come from a Galaxy Note 1 (N7000) and I'm very used to rooting and installing custom roms very easily, I normally did this because I hate the samsung default rom but since the moto g4 comes with almost default android I doubt I would need more than disabling ads (if the amazon version) and rooting. Yet I still don't want to close myself to any future possibilities.
Anything else I should know about this phone from the rooting/rom perspective before I buy them, like how easy it is to brick or any limiting factors for it at the moment?
Thanks
PS: The difference between 16gb and 32gb doesn't mean much to me because as far as I can tell both come with pretty similar internal partitions for apps and most of the extra space goes to media/music which I don't use or care much about.

If you buy the Amazon Prime version with ads, unlocking and rooting it is a pain in the a-- from what I have seen in these forums. I have the non-Prime version and it was a breeze to unlock and root it. Lots of ROM options for it as well.
I have a 32gb Amazon model and I was able to bootloader unlock relatively easily just recently... but the Amazon version has far less support from the community due to the software differences. It works with any of the custom ROMs but the headache may not be worth the $50 discount.

is it worth buying in 2017?

I am currently moto g2 user. and since using moto phones I can't buy any other phone but moto. as my budget is very low. So, i was thinking to buy moto g4+ that suits my budget. so should i go for it?

Umm I Have Both Moto G3 and G4 Plus ( Die Hard Moto Fanboy Had a G2 Too ) I Feel Moto is Losing There Unique Design Language That Made It Standout from Chinese Brands and Also G4+ Has A Lot on Heating Issues ( Worse than It Sounds ) and Depending on What Type Of Phone You Get (its a Lottery) You are Gonna Face Burn-in or Ghost Touch Issues So If You Are Into Custom ROMs Than I Would Suggest Buy G3 Instead Of G4+ Its Not Worth It Development Is Equally Good if Not Better and If You Do End Up Buying a G4+ Make Sure to Protect That Camera Lens Gets Scratched Up Too Easily

imo, if you can help it, stay away from Motorola. They've been really shoddy about updates for all their phones, including the G4. There have also been issues regarding ghost touches/screen failures, but nearly every phone has its share of issues and the G4 is not unique in this regard.
If you plan to root/ROM your phone, the G4 is not a bad choice as there are a variety of ROMs to choose from, as well as decent support.
Even if you do purchase a G4+, don't spend more than $200 USD on it. Any more than $200, and you can get vastly better phones such as the Nexus 5X, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3/4, and the Huawei Honor 6X.

Well, don't forget that the Nexus 5X also has the bootloop issue.
If you want to root and ROM, I heartily recommend the 2015 X/X Pure if you can afford it. Or the OnePlus 2.
But, if you're going to stay on stock, get a Nokia 6 (or whatever other phones they have). Stock Android with super fast updates.
My previous phone was an iPhone 4. I am very happy with my G4+ and they can be had for a $200 for the 64GB model. There are many well supported ROMs to choose from. Most OEM update support sucks...a friend of mine dropped $700 on his Galaxy S7 and is in 7.0 with the February security patch. Due to fantastic developer (thank you OAdam11 for Tesla) support, I am running 7.1.2 with the May 5 security update. I would recommend it.
Redmi note 4x(Snapdragon ) except bootloader unlocking is difficult to somebody ( not for me), definitely better than g4plus.I had both ,but as per development and MIUI , Redmi note 4x is my choice for your budget.

I bought a second hand one for gps use last month and ended up using it as my primary device. I also have a Moto x play and kumia (pointless). I bought it for 140usd - 9000inr. The back camera lens is scratched a bit but there is no other issue. Photos are clear though. The phone is very nice and it doesn't heat up for me as many people say. Gets fully charged in 1.25 hours. I don't play games so for other use it works awesome.
It is way better than Moto x play which I bought when it released. The camera is good. That can be also an option for you . Or, you can go for Nexus 5x. Price dropped and you can also find a second sale phone for less than 150. If you are so Keen about the quality buy a scratched phone for low price, replace the case housing. It's new.
I have a lumia 640xl which I refurbished under 100usd. It still works charm..
Go for it mate...
I know it's been several months since someone posted something here, but I'm curious to know your opinion on this...
I have just purchased an used Moto G4 Plus XT1644 4GB + 64GB yesterday at B&H Photo in excellent condition (10 out of 10), at least that's how they described it, for $138.50 shipped. It's arriving on Thursday.
I was not aware of its many issues like, heating issues, screen burn in / ghost touches and so on... So now I'm kinda worried about my decision...
My wife had an iPhone 6 and I converted her to a Moto G5 Plus about 3 to 4 months ago. She's very happy with the phone.
I only went with the G4 Plus because of the extra RAM, plenty storage space, external SD card reader and larger screen compared to the G5 Plus (*for the price I paid*). Most importantly, I bought the G4 Plus because it has ElementalX kernel, official Lineage OS support and TWRP as well. The combination of these three kept my Nexus 5 going for 3+ years before it gave up on me a few months ago.
My N5 still works but it randomly shuts down and reboots when using demanding tasks like taking photos or when it heats up. As long as I can keep it frozen (out of the freezer - literally) it works just fine though.
I've been using a crappy $60 Amazon Prime Exclusive phone, the Blu R1 HD on stock Marshmallow + Magisk / Xposed / Gravity Box / N-ify. Performance is fine considering what I paid for it. Thanks to the infamous fire.apk that plagued the R1 HD for months, I managed to get a full refund for that phone today. So I've got a free phone with malware basically.
I really wanted a 5.5" to 6" phone with good dev support on the cheap but as you know, both the G5 Plus / G5S Plus have a smaller 5.2" and very little dev support (compared to the G4 Plus) and they cost quite a bit more.
So I went with lower price, better dev support and slightly bigger screen on the G4 Plus.
What do you guys think?

Where to buy G5 Plus locally?

My local best buy seems to never have anything in the phone world unless it costs $500 plus even when the website says so. I rather have the G5S Plus but will take a G5 Plus 32GB. Moto says it's sold out of the gray g5s plus. So what stores would you suggest I go look at locally? I'm in a city of 200K so we have the usual stores here. Seems like retailers rather get you inside a store rather than say they are out of stock. My current phone has a fully busted screen so I much rather have a new device asap tomorrow morning. Phone will be used on Metro pcs / T-Mobile network
Thanks in advance

Not sure where you live, but I live in a rural state and am over 400 miles from any city over 500k or so, and the only place I have found this device is at BestBuy... Almost every BestBuy store stocks it around here, even in Bismarck, ND, they have 13 phones under $200.
I have never had much luck at Target or Walmart for phones, all they carry around here is branded pre-paid devices.
If you live in a bigger city, you have some more options... B&H Photo, MicroCenter, or Fry's Electronics may carry this or something else like it in store.
If you absolutely need it tomorrow, might need to do some digging on Best Buy... Some other options would be Axon 7 Mini (my son has had this phone a year or so, it is extremely under-rated device, nicer than my G5 Plus in most regards for $100 less), Blu R1 Plus (there is a BB exclusive model, almost every store carries it), Asus ZenFone 3 Max, or ZTE Blade V8 Pro. Just about every BestBuy I have seen in the 8 states I travel to frequently stock at least a dozen unlocked >$300 phones, but you often have to dig for them as they aren't always out in the open. I deal with Best Buy a lot, it isn't uncommon in some areas to have to show the person working there the app and say "you have this somewhere and I would like to buy it now, can you find it for me?" and they usually come up with it in some back room stock or something.
Otherwise, as much as I hate to say it, but overnight shipping from Amazon might be worth it.
I was going to start a new thread but the subject thread still applies...
In 2019 does anyone know where to find a 4GB/64GB XT1687? Motorola no longer sells it, Amazon only has their Amazon Prime with locked down bootloader. Third parties aren't forthcoming about what they're offering.
I live in California and purchased one from a fellow Californian but once I got it it turned out to be the Amazon version. Bah! Anyone know of any sellers selling the regular Motorola version.
I like playing with older ROMs. My daily driver since 2014 has been a LG G3. I run and multiboot between KitKat through Oreo ROMs. Fun stuff but I've been through three of those. They fail for one reason or another.
I have other devices but they're either Oreo+ or just too much trouble when going from one Android version to another. Potter has/had googobs of development so there's always something to play with. Granted, Nougat+ I believe but that's cool.
If anyone knows of any reliable sellers for the phone I'd appreciate any pointers.

I saw a few on ebay the other day. That's where I'd get mine from if I wanted another today.
Don't buy them all though so I can have one when my current one dies! :laugh:

LOL. Okay, I'll try to control myself.
Thanks, I haven't been on eBay in a long time. Will take a look. N1wireless has the phone but I suspect it's Amazon so sent a mail to their sales group. A week later and they haven't responded. Not a good sign.

Need to look very close at phones listed on eBay. I bought a ""New-In-Box!" phone a few weeks ago that was not new at all. Of course the same thing with Amazon, lot of people have complained about getting refurbishes (or worse) phones when the listing said "new". If you find something you like on eBay or Amazon, contact the seller before you buy! And/or at least read some of the seller reviews., especially looking for any negative ones.
About a month ago I got super-lucky and found a definitely-new 64gb G5 Plus on Swappa, for $160. Yeah like I said, super-lucky.

. . . has been known to have the exact phone I was looking for at a competitive price, online ordering.
But if you're not looking for new, I would recommend checking Swappa first. Right this minute they have two "Mint" G5 Pluses listed, and a "Good" phone with 64gb. I've bought several phones on Swappa and every one has been what it was advertised to be. They screen sellers and their ads pretty well, and even run a phone's IMEI before approving a listing.
Just a little update. I haven't purchased one yet. B&H Photo has none. Swappa has only one Consumer Cellular phone.
N1Wireless finally got back to me. They said all of theirs are regular Motorola phones, not Amazon Prime models. They still have the 4/64 models, open box, both Gold and Lunar Gray.
Understandably, pickins are gettin' slim for older phones.

Umm... The regular Moto 4/64 version is the one you want. You don't want a carrier variant or the Amazon one. Color-wise, throw it in a case and be good to go regardless.
At this point the device is two years old though... Why not look at a new Nokia or (if budget allows) Pixel 3a device. One thing we are seeing with later Moto devices is they are really designed to die at 2 years, things start failing quickly especially the battery which is a bugger to replace.
Oh, of course on the first points. Was just mentioning what was out there.
The only reason I was looking at the potter is because I like to play (usually multiboot) with older ROMs, which I prefer. Potter had a grip of goodies to play with.
My main phone has been the LG G3 where I multiboot between KitKat thru Oreo ROMs. Fun stuff. Daily/primary was a fave LP used since 2015. After screen was failing on the third one I started looking at the G5 Plus.
I have other phones (ZTE Axon 7, Moto G5s Plus, Essential PH-1, and little ole Galaxy Light) so not in actual need. I'm sure this fourth G3 will fail in some way shortly, hence the hunt.
Not interested in new phones, or new Androids to be exact. I have no interest in Pie and barely tolerate Oreo. Though I almost got a OnePlus 6T but the IRS snatched up my refund (can't get away from old school loans I guess. LOL).

new unlocked V 35 AT&t $300 should I yes? no?

On the edge of buying? Thinking that this is a lot of performance for $300? So what is anybody thinking ? would this be a good deal coming from a V 20 that the screen is starting to come off. so I have to start looking for something to replace it.
It does appear that the development has just about stalled out because of the locked bootloaders.

All LG V30 in the world have bootloader unlock, root and TWRP. You can buy mint on eBay for $165 - $170 right now:

If you don't need T-Mobile variant specifically (you are not a T-Mobile customer), then the LS998 V30+ or US998 V30+ are the two best choices for North America users.

Hi, I've had my V20 for a couple of years and wondering if the V30 would be a worthwhile upgrade from it? I have been looking at prices and they are relatively cheap compared to a new 2019 phone.
I would only use it with an AOSP rom as I don't like the LG software. Some of the things I don't like about the V20:
-Crappy battery life , never had more than 2-3 sot
-Speaker output is very low
-Gets hotter than hell
-Slow and sluggish even with h custom ROMs
I would get the H932 version as I have T-Mobile. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

It was worth coming to when released in 2017. But even more in 2019 now that DTS 3D stereo framework has been added. If you specifically need the T-mobile branded variant, look for the T-mobile H932 V30+ (128GB). There are a few out there. T-mobile sold them for a limited time before only selling the H932 V30 (64GB).
LG V30/V30+
* 1440P OLED (537 ppi)
* Qi wireless charging
* 3.5mm headset jack
* Quad DAC
* DTS 3D stereo (need root)
* IP68 dust/water resistance
* rear camera OIS on normal lens - plus 120 degree wide angle lens
* superfast fingerprint sensor
* 64GB (V30) or 128GB (V30+) internal storage
* microSD port for additional storage
* bootloader unlock and root
* no notch
* fantastic battery
Be sure to ready this sticky first about rooting. your V30/V30+/V30S. It also covers some information about AOSP/Lineage custom ROMs.
Thanks for all that info.
I was following the v35 thread to see how it was progressing and I'd like the ram and the newer processor but it looks like the V 30 to be able to perform brain surgery on it is way more desirable a h?
I put two offers in yesterday on two different sites for the v35 unlocked new gray and they had him listed at 3:45 and I offered 299 and both of them maybe fortunately were rejected?
So I better dig deeper into the V 30.
Thanks again for your input.

Sure. Read the XDA forum links above.
I've used this seller a few times:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-V30-US998-128GB-Titan-Black-Unlocked-Smartphone-9-10-/183795406681
Thanks for the link, I was also looking have a supplier that had new unlocked with the 128 storage 4 248.
I was wanting to make a couple comments back to you but got reading a couple links and I feel like you were holding out on us I'm really excited to see what I read. And you were commenting on that thread also it's on the the v30 thread and it's from page 157 on the high possibility of Brian/ running naked being able to unlock the bootloader !
So I'll give this link and I'm wondering for other people with the v35 I would think that this information would give them some pretty big hope?
For those that want to take a look go to the end of the thread and it's page 156+157 and read those pages for some promising news!

Now I have V30 Verizon version, and I'm waiting for V35 to compare it. V30 is great phone, only small issue which I found, that V30 has small freezes on my videos from gopro hero 6 black 4k/50fps 80mbps. And, as I read, cameras on V30 and V35 are different.
So I was on the fence but as I am seeing a little action with this phone I am now waiting to find a deal on a new v 35 unlocked I've got one location that it's right at 33999 and I waited the other day there was a eBay bucks at 13% and I was still on the fence but I'm ready to purchase it now but I'm hoping for some kind of deal? Anybody know where there's a nice gray one new unlocked 4 a good number?
I'm going to add a link to a post I just made that shows Pie is being distributed for the v35 AT&t.

2 months ago I made an offer on one of the eBay sellers to purchase new unlocked AT&t v35 4 $300.
I also made an offer to another seller of the same phone for the purchase price of 27999 and both of them rejected the offer said the price they have is what they're sticking with. So here we are two months later as prices were coming down a little bit the one that I had offered 27999 had dropped his price down to 27999 so I went ahead and bit. Screen protector case all toll I'm in for 291.

Ouch I knew the discount was coming but I didn't think the inventory would last, it was showing down to the last phone so I went ahead and pulled the trigger.
That's a good discount that would have put icing on the cake.
I have to go back and check cuz I thought I checked all the sites and now I feel better cuz I did see that deal the seller I was dealing with wasn't on the list.

Honestly i bought this phone 4 months ago for 290$.
yes price wise sounds like a great deal but camera is bad.
My Wifes HTC U11 and my Sisters Pixel 1 takes much better photos. I don't take many photos but when i needed to take one this camera was an embarrassment. I felt like i was using my old HTC M9.
pixel 2 are selling so cheap these days i would rather get that even though it has 835 and less ram.
Seller Cell2Go on amazon is selling unlocked V35 for $299. It comes in an original but open box, packed in all wraps that it is supposed to be packed, looks new to me. The only thing - there are no headphones (by design as there is no place for them in a box). Mine has manufacture date Sept 2018. Pretty cool phone, no regrets so far.
