Mic Problems

Hi Everybody,
My Magician recently developed an annoying problem and I wonder if anyone had this already:
The internal Mic occasionally goes to a very low sensitivity, i.e., when talking on the phone I have to scream so that the other person can hear me. This is also valid when recording a voicememo - on the playback I hear mostly static with a faint voice in the background.
Next, when using the headset, the voicememo records Ok but when talking on the phone, the other guy ears mostly the electromagnetic noise of the GSM (a loud "RRRRRRRRRRR").
I have noticed that this effect of the headset is started when the battery voltage goes below 3.4V and, as i connect the charger, the effect disapears.
I cannot relate the effects on the internal mic with the battery charge though; it seems to be more random....
It definitely is Hardware...but could it be solved maybe with a new battery?!
Any hunches?

that is actually aproblem faced by all magician users. mine too worked just fine for firts 6 months then this annoying problem arose.
others could barely hear me.
i tried every sort of registry tweak, cleaned the mic and other thing but still nothing fruitful happened.
one fine day in an attempt to fx the internal mic myself i broke it (there is hardly any service backup for o2 devices here in New Delhi)
since then either i don't use it or use it with a bluetooth handsfree. no problems with bluetooth handsfree.

Yep, That´s right: No problem with the Bluetooth, but is just annoying to have to worry about carrying the BT device all the time and being always worried about its battery state - not to mention that I already lost one...
My guess is that the Analog-to-Digital Mic Chip is failing, or some part of the Mic circuit before that, or even the power suply to the said Chip....
That's just a lot of guessed troubleshooting to do without the knowledge of the elecronic circuit itself.
BTW, I just read your post about the mic problem - Did you have the problem as well with the wired headphones?

no! i don't face any problem with bundled earphones or even nokia stereo earphones or a bt handsfree even if i talk from a distance.
problem is only with internal mic.
i would suggest not to try anything yourself on the board. u may ruin ur device like me.
and yes, its annoying to carry tha bt set all the time. thats why i seldom use this devica anymore...i use it only as a mp3 player paired with sony mdr-e808 earphones and equalizer app. the sound is very crisp and punchy.

Faisal is very right buddy......it is purely jumper problem. I attached a snap of my Cell for you.......See the arrow... It is mic and we have to put the black color jumper on it.... Actually what happen with us.... we don't pay much importance to that jumper... there is a tiny whole on that jumper, put that whole on the head of mic so that our voice waves travel inside the jumper and go into mic.
It is my own experience that I put wrong side of jumper on mic and got panic three times . Thanks Faisal.....

the jumper solution is a quoted wire or in combination solded n jumped from the main sources or the parts in between to make a proper current flow in case of any resistance in between, loose or broken connection.
unfortunately the solution i was supposed to provide was scheduled that night is delayed due to some very sudden technical reasons. And for this i really apologize.

You are right Faisal......... but I told everything which I demonstrated...... And I solved the problem.... It can be possible that other people also did the same mistake which I did.... They can check their mic cover, as long as you can’t provide them any solution. Right??

For the main problem of the buzz noise when calling: I had it too. And it became gradually louder, more louder. And then (it became REALLY insopportable: when in call even the main speaker emitted that noise, and considerably loud) my phone resetted. It decided to not woken up unless I took the Sim out, and that was the end of my phone (the "phone" part: I used it as an expensive mp3 for quite a while). The noise was so loud that also attempting to connect to the carrier caused soft reset. Searching around I discovered that noise to be related to RF leakage.. you have been warned folks

What is the best mic fix for this tablet?

I'm new to this tablet, only had it a week and relized people cant hear me when i Skype with them. So before i purchase a head phone set with a mic on it i wanted to ask here to find out what is the best solution ??

I use a stereo headphone (make Wesc - more or less 50 €) with a little microphone which is located on the cable (close to the headphone). The sound is crystal clear.
I didn't find any other solution for using voip (skype, google) with this tablet.

I use it in three ways.
1- like castafiore do.
2- using only a headphone, no mic. (use the internal mic)
3- using speakers conect to heatphone plug. (use the internal mic)
I think that the "plug" disconect something internal in reference with the "cancel noise system."
Please excuse my bad english.

So are you saying that all I need is head phones no mic?

If you want better results, you can install: "volume control"

Try skype test.
I talk with my son every night and he hear me wery well.

Unlike tabasco22 even though the noise is reduced when there is something plugged into the headphone jack, the internal mic is not usable for skype.
it seems that there are many headphone/mic sets that work, though i have tried 2 iphone sets that do not .

I use SONY headphones ,speakers.

using a $1.50 headset with mic i got from ebay. works great. actually it works way better then it should for that price.

There is another solution: take off the back cover of the tablet. If you do a test with the two microphones totally uncovered (as I've done myself), you will notice that there is NO improvement at all.
Evidently, the problem doesn't come from there...

I think it's a software problem, between the level of the microphone and cancel noise system level
This problem disappears when you insert any kind of plug into the speaker output., which cancels the "noise canceling system".
deepdelete, you phisicaly disconect the "sound cancelling mic" when you insert a plug.

I think sensitivity of sound canceling mic must be lower, or it must be placed somewhere else.
Sure there is also possibility to correct things with software mod.

Yes, I did try that as well. But it doesn't make any difference neither.
I think you could be right, deepdelete. The second microphone on the a500 faces the back of the tablet (opposit the user).
But the 2 microphones are so closed to each other that the desired effect (as explained on the link you give), the "noise-cancelling", doesn't work properly. It's just a guess but it sounds logical (to me, anyway ).

Surprised nobody mentioned, removing the tab from the cover if you use one.
Found this out the hard way. Tab's cover, actually covered the mic! And, if I held it in my hands, it actually picked up the residual sound my fingers made when holding it. Resulted in a "garbled" sound on the other end.
I found with skype, the best thing, was to remove it from the cover, and place it on the covers "stand".

Where is the microphone located? I can't even use the voice search function with mine.

There are two mics..
ONE is dead center in the grove between the glass and case at the top of screen. you will see a tiny slot..
the second one.. on the right of the sd card door you will see a tiny hole.. Its right under there.. This one is for background noise canceling. Like from the a500s own speaker.. and does not work well.. The mic works ok with yahoo messenger.. if YOU HAVE NO BACKGROUND NOISE AROUND or you cover that back mic..on not well BUT BETTER THEN IT DOES WITH GTALK OR skype ..
it just sucks is all there is to it.. I tried replacing the mic with a high end known to work well mic . NO LUCK So its either a hardware chip.. or software issue.. Do not think this will ever be fixed .. USE HEADPHONES

Microphone low sensitivity when not on speaker

I have noticed an issue that did not exist with the Galaxy Nexus.
When not on speakerphone the microphone sensitivity is down-regulated significantly from the way it is when it is on speakerphone.
Frequently people connect the phone via auxiliary cable in the car (as a hands-free approach), but in order for it to route the audio to the speakers for the car, it cannot be on speakerphone. However when not on speakerphone the sensitivity of the microphone is limited, it is not the same as on speakerphone, therefore unless you have the phone right beside your mouth, the other party will be unable to hear you (due to low volume).
I assume this is an software change in 4.2, I have tested the issue on two Nexus 4's. When turning back on speakerphone, the microphone increases sensitivity again, and the other party is able to hear clearly again.
This poses a problem if you want to have the phone in your car connected to auxiliary and not right beside your mouth/face. I assume they added this because they assume that if the phone was not on speakerphone then it would be right beside your mouth/face during a call, however this is not at all always the case, especially if you connect your phone via aux in the car.
Anybody else experienced this? Any work-around?

I think, it is the noise cancellation. Nexus One has Niose Cancellation, too.
There I've found out, that I have to make a change in the build.prop to disable this
but I really don't know, where to find the line in build.prop to disable the noise cancellation.
And: You have to root your phone to do this.
It's really a shame, I can't use my Nexus 4 in my car plugged into the auxiliary input

reminds me a of the days in Nexus one..

Thank you so much for bringing this up. This is my main beef with the phone coming from my Gnex. Hopefully a fix can be found soon.:good:

My suspicion is that this has to do with noise cancellation. The way noise cancellation works is that there are two different microphones at opposite ends of the phone; the one farther away from your mouth picks up ambient sounds and, more faintly, your voice. The one nearer your mouth picks up ambient sounds and, more loudly, your voice. What gets sent over the phone connection is, effectively, the difference between the signals from the two microphones, leaving mostly your voice.
If the two microphones are roughly equal distances from your mouth, they both pick up your voice about equally strongly, meaning that your voice is mostly filtered out with the rest of the ambient noise. Speakerphone mode disables the noise cancellation, so your voice comes through strongly.

.... as I've said in the second post. Other phones don't have trouble with it.

Exactly. This is not simply a noise cancellation problem IMO. Other phones have noise cancellation too but don't have this problem.

Sorry for inadvertently repeating what you said in that post; it's been nearly two weeks since then, and I had forgotten it had been previously mentioned.
Perhaps the other phones with noise cancellation that don't exhibit this behavior simply turn it off if a headphone is plugged in. That would make sense for a speaker-only headphone, but not necessarily for a headphone with an inline microphone, where the voice microphone would still be nearer to you than the auxiliary microphone. If that's the case, it would be nice if that setting were exposed as a controllable option.

I remember pm founder of cyanogen mod and he pointed me the line to disable in nexus one..

I heard if you get an external mic it is much better but I haven't tried myself. This is annoying because I usually just use the aux with my nexus s with no problems >.< Anyone out there got any other solutions?

It's the other party not being able to hear when on aux.
Misread.. But Yea if using speakerphone to avoid this problem ull barely be able to hear them, simply not loud enough

Static sound for headphones?

Hi guys, I have a request for you guys. I hear a static noise in my left ear bud when I plug it in to my nexus 6p. I don't hear it on two front speakers on physical body of the phone just when I plug it in. I hear it through my ear buds. Can anyone confirm if this is a software issue or just me?
The static volume is very low so you might want to be in somewhere quiet area(library quiet)
I don't hear anything in home screen though just when I'm on some app such as twitter or YouTube or Facebook.
I'm going to try with different earbuds and headsets see if all do it too.
I know Samsung tablet (tab pro 8.4) had similar issues as well so I'm suspecting software. And I'm hoping it is software bug.

Yeah, sounds like software. What app are you using? Have you tried another app? Any kinks or damage to the cable of your headphones?

No, I just purchased this JBL earbuds and didn't have any issues with other devices. Also it seems like consistent with other headsets i have. I know for fact it isn't my headsets and earbuds issue. That just boils down to either hardware issue or software issue. I'm just hoping it's a software.

All of these threads talking about problems is scaring the crap out of me...

I'm not blaming on this device just yet. I've had similar issues with Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 with static noise. And all confirmed that owners do experience the same. But Tab Pro was actually on physical speaker. So I'm most certain its just the software.
As far as other issues other users posted, I have none. Except this static on 3.5mm port.

I purchased from huawei..and I know their return policy is not as good as Googles is..I just hope I won't have to use it when I get it.
It would make sense that its a software issue..hopefully someone with the device can confirm.

I got JBL J22A from Newegg when they had on sales for $8. Supposedly retailed at $50. Sound quality is very good for $8. Not too heavy bass but deep. Mid tone and vocal tone are very easy to hear as well. The most important part was that noise doesn't leak through the ear when you put them on, outside noise is isolated as well. Clear sound all around.

I'm not experiencing any static with headphones plugged in. Using a Razor gaming headset.

I listened to Spotify for about an hour while I was at the gym earlier. No static whatsoever. Sound was perfectly fine.
Used a pair of Xiaomi Piston 3's.

Well the noise stops when music or sound is playing. It starts to have very low static when there is no sound. And gym can be very loud, the noise can be heard very quietly. Thanks for the feedback.

I can confirm that I am also having this issue with my Bose QC20s. Goes away when audio is being played. Also seems to only occur when processes are running. Try going to the home screen and opening and closing the app drawer. Does that cause the sound for you as well?

Wanted to provide a quick update. I went and tried a pair of QC20i and they do not have the static issue. Since these are made for Apple products and have the three button remote the 3.5mm jack is a little longer. The previous set I had only had a one button remote. Probably not an easy fix for everyone but wanted to pass this along.

Yes, your symptoms are exactly same as mine. I've also tried headsets without microphones and no static, the one with microphone seems to have that noise. so maybe it is some sort of design flaw.

The QC20i have a microphone and no static. My hypothesis is that the larger 3.5mm headphone jack on Apple certified accessories (or those with 3 button remotes) work fine.

damn, my JBL makes static but i can deal with it because it is so tiny static. all my other junk earbuds (generics) have no statics at all. and i don't want to carry around my sennheiser headset around, so big.
at least it is okay with sound. thanks for everything.

I have the exact same issue with mine. Static noise, but only when no audio is playing and I'm in an app (doesn't happen on the home screen). But I've tried two sets of headphones: the one I have with a mic gives me the static noise, the one without does not.
Very weird.

Same problem with my Bose QC20 too. I thought I had a defective 6P, but looks like jack issue. It's an annoyance, but learning to live with it since this is otherwise a great phone.

I have the apple earpods and whenever I use it to talk if something rubs against the microphone (my shirt/jacket) in the headphones it makes the static sound. It it's not touching anything nothing happens. When I rub my finger over the microphone/volume buttons it makes the static sound.

Nexus 6P speaker phase/polarity problem

I bought used Nexus 6P that have problem with speakers polarity.
When I'm listening stereo signal left and right channels are cancelling each other out, which is generally generate low in bass and add reverb.
I test it with reverse polarity/phase song and then everything sound good.
This means that one of the speakers in the phone is in the reverse polarity or out of phase.
I don't know how is that possible but that's what it is.
I wonder if there is any software solution for this problem!
Is there some tweak in mixer_paths to change polarity on one speaker?
I am grateful for every useful advice!

If it's used the jack itself may be damaged or just dirty. Maybe it's got some cheese in it.

I forget to mention that when I try to listen over headphones everything is normal, also over BT headphones.
Problem is only with speakers on device

I resolve the problem, I change left speaker, and now is all good.
Probably the owner before me change a speaker with bad one.
