My classroom tablet is acting up... - Acer Iconia A500

I think I have a problem that has not been covered yet. I have an Acer A500 that works just fine but will randomly restart. When it restarts it always hangs at the Acer logo. I can then hold the power button to turn the tablet off and then turn it back on again and it will start up fine without issue but will then restart again a short while later. I notice it happen maybe 10 times a day, possibly more. The other day it went a couples hours without a restart but eventually did. My students can play games, get on the internet, etc just fine until it resets again. I believe it has only reset when in standby but I cant say for sure.
The OS is up to date. I tried a hard reset and reset with the OS to factory settings several times without luck. It can have 100 apps on it and reset or no apps on it, it doesnt matter. I notice no difference in turning off the wifi. It doesnt seem to reset on a schedule.
Any ideas? It sure would be nice if my students could actually use the tablet rather than have it sitting around doing nothing.

If it's running stock ics, it's a common issue. Blame Acer and their buggy rom.
You could perform a data reset but that wipes all user data.
You may want to install custom rom, but you will need the tabs cpuid and skrilax_cz unlocked boot loader plus a good couple ours for prep and installation. See the root guide in my Sig for info

[Q] rebooting

My Asus Transformer wont stop rebooting and when I turn it off, it takes me countless times to hit the power on/off button to turn it on, then it just randomly reboots every time I am connected to the internet. I have not rooted my device nor have I done anything to affect its stock state, any help at all would be much appreciated!!
I always have to hold my power button for a few second to boot it from a completely off state... Are you doing that? Or just quick pressing it?
As for the rebooting issue, since you are completely stock with out root, then I would start by uninstalling any recent apps. maybe if you remember what new apps were installed around the time the issues began... I would start there. otherwise, factory reset and see if that helps... Beyond that, i'm not sure what you can do with a stock non rooted device. good luck

I have managed to do a factory reset, and no apps were present, yet still when I went to the browser it rebooted and now I am struggling to turn it on, after the first lock screen, it reboots again. Yes, I am also holding the power button untill the screen glows. Thanks for the quick reply!
If a factory reset does not fix it, then back up any important data and get on the phone with asus to do a warranty repair (assuming you are past the return date from where you bought it)
I have returned the device and am getting a new one in a few hours. I hve done some research and i understood that the new firmware update does that to the transformer 101. Can anyone confirm that? Or am I safe to update the new device which i will recive? Thanks!

Verizon i815 random reboots

Had my Verizon 7.7 i815 since 4-30 and love it except for one issue - it reboots at least
once a day usually when its connected to the charger.
I need help figuring out if this is a hardware issue so I can just exchange it or if is
software/other issue that I can resolve myself.
When it reboots it goes to a black screen with a single white dot in the center.
It is playing the reboot jingle when this happens.
Sometimes it will bootloop and I have to press the power button for a few seconds to
reset the tab.
Honeybar is installed and AdwLauncherEx is the launcher.
I have tried booting to stock recovery and clearing the cache and did a factory reset - didnt help.
The tab is rooted.
I also removed the Sandisk 16gb microsdhc card after a reboot at 5 am because I had read about users who were having issues with their tabs until removing or switching out their sd cards. The tab went without rebooting after that for 19 hours until I installed
Hidebar. After installing hidebar the tab rebooted twice within a minute so these two instances may be because of that app. I uninstalled it after that and went back to
Honeybar.
I have only experiened a white dot reboot when trying to swap the phone.apk (it was a never ending reboot). I otherwise haven't had it reboot on me. I don't use any bar hiding apps.

Just to be clear my tab was having the reboot issue long before
I installed hidebar - I only installed hidebar tonight and have
owned the tab for a week.
I am however able to cause the reboot consistently with hidebar.
Well the reboots started again after almost an entire weekend reboot free.
Going to exchange it at Verizon for another 7.7 tonight.
Good luck! hopefully the new one is error free.
I've had the same issue with mine, also a vz 7.7.
It was happening in a loop the other day and I managed to capture a video of the entire sequence.
I don't actually think this is a reboot but instead seems to be more of a screen and radio lockup.
I get the little dot in the middle of the screen. After 20 seconds or so the tab goes back to the lock screen. Once unlocked it has to re-connect to either Verizon or Wifi.
I tried disabling the wifi and 3g/4g networks and this seemed to improve the situation but yesterday I was able to get it to do the same thing with the radio's disabled so probably not chip related.
I'm still within my return window I think. Seriously considering returning the thing mainly due to this problem and the lack of ICS.
Had a GT8.9 previously and even though the screen isn't quite as nice it was a pretty great tab and cost half as much *and* can access the awesome AOKP ICS rom.

Yep, development for this tab is non-existent at the moment.
I'm stickin' it out tho and hoping for CM9 sooner or later.
Same here. I can't find a pattern to what triggers it. The first time i was installing a bunch of apps from my computer via Google Play (not tethered to PC). I pull my microsd and sim and it continues for several cycles. Did a bunch of the stuff you did also w/ clearing the cache and actually the first time i couldn't get it out of the loop (it would actually get into the desktop where it looks like it would be ok, then suddenly screen w/ the white dot in the middle and looping again). Never got close to depleting the built-in storage, so that's not the factor.
Sometimes I can get it to stop by turning it off by holding power down and turning it back on again. It doesn't happen a lot, but it's freakin annoying when it starts.
I don't have honeybar, but am running ADW.
Wow, good to know others who are going through the same issue...I thought I was the only one! I still have the reboot loop issue even after performing a hard reset. For me, the reboot loop only occurs when I'm on a cellular connection. If I'm on wifi or on airplane mode, it doesn't happen. I'm well past the exchange/return policy so this is extremely irritating.
Personally, the most frustrating thing is that my tab will be fully charged at the start of my day, then in my bag for the morning while I'm at work and then, when I take it out to use it, the battery is completely drained because of the reboot loop!!!
I'm hoping an update (ICS?) will fix the issue but I'm not holding my breath for it...
Same issue here. I am rooted, and originally thought the reboot was from Gesture Control app (awesome app!) when hiding navi bar. But after reading this thread, I'm not so sure.
I've only had the reboot loop once, here is my setup when it happened....
-had just unplugged from charger after full charge
-Mobile data was off, Wifi was set to sleep....never when plugged in..
-The device kept rebooting, so I powered off, went into recovery, wiped cache. I also turned off Gesture Control app functions (not sure if this was necessary however). This seemed to stop the reboot loop.
Would be nice if we could keep gathering info on the conditions that cause this, and potentially find a solution. It sucks having a dead tablet because of this issue.
My 7.7 does the same thing. I don't use the tab constantly, but I do notice the reboot on a fairly regular basis. Same symptoms as everyone above, except for me it doesn't go into a loop, it just reboots once with the white dot and then comes back fairly quickly, so not really a full reboot. I don't see the Verizon & Samsung splash screens, just the white dot then the login screen.
Mine is not rooted, has the stock ROM, and does not have any UI enhancing apps or mods. It's pretty much stock other than having applications installed, and nothing that really runs in the background because I have Advanced Task Killer kill auto kill every 30 minutes.
Not that big of an issue for me right now, but would definitely like to see it resolved.
gawd! It doesn't happen a lot, but when it does it's friggin annoying. Yes, it's the white dot and doesn't show the full bootup splash, kinda just goes to the desktop again seems ok for a minute and then boom- black screen w/ dot in the middle and it starts over again.
This last bout was pretty bad and it didn't respond to shutting it completely down by holding the power button and letting it boot again, which has sometimes fixed this in the past when it's looping like this.
Can't tell what is causing it, at first i thought maybe a live wallpaper, the 64GB sandisk microsd card, or a faulty sim (sometimes my tablet says SIM not inserted, even if it is). I tried changing all of those but it still happens. I haven't found a pattern of usage or other type of trigger to make it do this though.
I've only ever experienced this when I tried adding in the mms and dialer app from the GSM 7.7. Otherwise my tab has been rock solid.

Samsung galaxy s3 crashing and bootloops when not charging

Hi guys just got my s3 couple of hours ago white 16gb for sprint. I tried searching for the issue I am having and no results, so I am posting here. I did the initial android setup and everything was running fine for first 15 min and then phone keeps freezing and restarts, I did many battery pulls and same thing. It would work for min or 2 and freezes and reboots. Then I put the phone on charge and used it for several minutes and no crash.
So I unplugged the phone when the battery was at 52% after charging for more then 45 min, and same reboot issue is back. So I was wondering if anyone else having this issue.
Thanks for all your help in advance.
if you didnt flash things, which i dont even know what you would flash and how at this point, i would say its broken, and you should go get an exchange. Hopefully youre the only one with the issue, ever.
i guess you could try a factory reset, which i would assume you can do from recovery, to which you would maybe get to by powering off, and holing volume up and power(once again, just an assumption).
p.s. i am impatiently waiting untill best buy gets 32gb version in stock so i can trade in this lte evo pos.
i did many factory resets and battery pulls and same issue. so i got tired and called in for exchange, they are sold out right now but will send one out as soon it comes back in stock.
Did you do a hard reset from recovery?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using XDA
any particular app installed that might be causing this? :crying:
Yes I Reset it from recovery and did factory reset 4 to 6 times, No apps installed. As soon as i start navigating through menus it freezes and then reboots. Sometimes it also freezes at sprint logo while restarting, i have owned 200+ phones never had a single android phone with this kind of Issue.

Do you have a sd card installed? If its from a older phone or s2 it might be the problem too. Back up everything in format the card then see what happens....
Thanks for all your help guys !
I fixed the issue by wiping cache partition and factory reset. Before all I did was factory reset but didn't do wipe.
No crash so far

Strange instances of multiple reboots!

This is really starting to get on my nerves now. Ever since I got my new S10+ from AT&T, it's occasionally done this thing where after I reboot the phone, I unlock it, and it briefly says "starting phone" on the home screen, and then will mysteriously do a quick reset, where it skips the AT&T logo and jingle, and just shows the Samsung splash screen , then takes me back to the lockscreen and it's usually fine after that.
However, Just now I decided to reset my phone, like one should do periodically, and it did the strange double reset after unlocking... Then when I unlocked it, after the "starting phone" message I tried to open a browser, and BAM! Quick reset again! Unlocked, let it start up, tried to open an app, BAM quick reset again after the screen briefly shifted from landscape to portrait mode (even though I was still holding it long ways in landscape position). Its never done this before and I'm getting concerned. It's never randomly reset while using the phone, this only happens right after a reset.
Any ideas? I've already tried wiping partition cache after big updates, doing soft resets. I'm worried that I'm going to have to end up resorting to a factory wipe, as others suggested I do when I was having battery drain issues on the ASD3 firmware, possibly because of restoring everything from a backup of my last phone when I got this one. Because supposedly restoring from backups from AT&T, Google or Samsung has caused all sorts of problems for people. I really don't want go wipe everything and spend hours try to get it all back on here manually if i don't have to.

Dang... So it does appear to be an issue experienced on both Exynos and Snapdragon variants. I wonder if there is or will be a fix for this. I've been asking around and haven't gotten many responses about this problem at all. I'm concerned because it seems to be getting worse than when I first got the phone.
I'm having the exact same problem. Sometimes it goes through quick reset, full reset, a couple more quick, then back to the Verizon logo, then starts up. Opening an app at that point usually does another quick, then full, then everything works. Glad I'm not the only one, but I haven't found any solutions either.

Mine does the same. Unlocked bought directly from Samsung. I don't reboot the phone very often so it doesn't bother me that much.

Very long boot time....

From power off or restart to the screen lock.. takes 1 minute and 40 seconds.... seems very long to me.. My PH-1 is stock and never rooted and always went through the OTA updates and is current and up to date on Android 10.
Thoughts
My first thought is it may be time for a factory reset.
have you tried safe mode?
Never timed mine until now. Just got curious... Regular restart: 1:25 from tapping the button in Power menu to the screen lock. Faster than yours, but not by much. Seems normal to me, consistent with what I've been seeing with this phone.

Thank you for timing yours! Just ran mine again with the stop watch on my Smart watch and it came in at exactly 1:52:78 so it is a bit slower than yours. Think I will try a factory reset and then time it before restoring everything from the cloud and see what I get. :highfive:
It seems due to the November Update.

Yes, seems very long. Mine takes about 35secs & that was with me putting the wrong SIM pin in the first time (I stoped timing when the clock appeared on screen (and my always on VPN had started, so could have been even quicker)
(I'm using a pin for unlock & was connecting to mobile data. Wonder if there is an app that runs at start up that could be slowing you guys down?)
64 seconds from cold to lockscreen for me - stock rooted 10.
I use SD Maid and selectively disable boot from a lot of applications - You would surprised be how many apps think they have the right to launch every boot and sit around in the background.
Magisk scripts can take a while to complete and will slow down launch too, a lot of modules would probably slow it too.
A little bit of housekeeping would probably help, a reset and restore however could just restore the same problem again....
After a factory reset without a restore it took 18.22 seconds from powered off state to the lock-screen. After a full restore from cloud backup it now takes 22.51 seconds from power off state to the lock-screen. Also the phone is way more responsive like it was when I first bought it.... Guess it is true what I have read online... best to factory reset your phone from time to time.
I get occasional long boot times, mostly after an update or similar. I haven't hooked up to adb during boot in awhile, but typically if you are having a long boot time the odex optimizer is probably re-running.

So mine had some issue & I lost data connection & wifi, couldn't fix so rebooted & now it's really slow to reboot. Did you have any issue with data/wifi. (I run a vpn so thought that might have been the cause, but even with it uninstalled it's still slow, though could have been initial cause)
Also since then installed this months security update but it still slow (over 1:30), update tons took about 30min as app optimising was so slow.

Mine did not have any issues with data nor wifi.
I would still do a factory reset.
Same thing happened to me with painfully slow boot times. Factory reset and restore, now boots in 25 seconds from switch on to lock screen.
i did a factory reset and it still takes over 2 min to boot.. accidentally wiped my phone trying ot install twrp..
then went ahead and installed lineage.. boots fast but can't get gapps to load lol
going to try to install lineage 18 and gapps.

Note: Are you using MindTheGApps, still only recommended package (though someone got another gapps to work, can't remember which)
Also make sure you are installing gapps BEFORE 1st boot into Lineage OS, if not do a factory reset & install gapps then boot to OS
should work fine on LOS 19.1 (or use npjhonstone unofficial version which has it included with rom)
PS. Never hand issue with increasing boot times since installing LOS.
