Mounting System Read/Write - One (M8) General

With s-off you can write to /system should you wish.
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p45 /system
will do the business and give you full read/write access to allow you to delete those pesky apps HTC want you to have at all costs. Facebook and Twitter system apps? No thanks!

I should be able to run this in terminal emulator, right?

Yes. Just miss out the adb bit, obviously.

I use FX File Explorer with the Root add-on.
You can then simply choose to open the system folder as root and then there's an option to remount R/W.

Beautiful guide......

Is there a way to mount system as rw on every boot?

[Q] remove app from rooted g2 (not disable)

Hi,
Now that i've rooted my tmobile G2, i'd like to remove completely some of the apps that i disabled previously (like amazon or photobucket)
I've done some research and found this out
su
mount -o rw,remount /data (or /system)
rm -f /system/app/<apkname>.apk //Replace the blue text, <apkname>, with the name of the APK you want to remove.
pm uninstall <package name> //Replace the blue text, <package name>, with the name of the APK you want to remove.
however, when i run the mount command, i get
Usage: mount [-r] [-w] [-o options] [-t type] device directory
if i try to remove the app directly without running the command
package:/system/app/PbAndroid.apk=com.photobucket.android
i get
rm -f PbAndroid.apk
rm failed for -f, Read-only file system
how do i do this now?
thanks
try
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system

OR HERE'S THE FREE *AND* EASY WAY: download the free version of titanium backup, go to the middle tab, find your app, tap on it, then tap the uninstall button. App uninstalled!
Obviously this requires perma root.

You're using the force uninstall in titanium backup. This was only necessary for nand locked devices, you can use the normal uninstall function now. Just tap, don't long press -- it'll give you a list of options.
so finally i have a chance to test this.
Thanks all for responding.
I tried the easier way with titanium backup.
I did the mistake of doing the long press and it rebooted.
But after that i just tried the "uninstalled" and it worked like a charm.
Thanks a lot.
Used titanium backup to delete all that crap. =)

[Q] Some system maps

Hi Every body,
In quit new in Android.
I just finaly rooted en S-Off my Desire.
Now I want to copy a file in to a system map, but I cant safe in that map.
Is there a way that I can Chmod the right, so I can Copy too their.
Check the file system you're trying to copy to, it might well be mounted as read-only. If you have permanent root you should be able to remount it as read/write.

No, you need to remount the /system file system (/system/media/audio/notifications) is just a directory within that file system.
Then go into that directory and make any changes that you need to. Then remount it as read-only when you're done.

Are you not comfortable doing it via the command line ? There is an "experimental" option within ES File Explorer to let it run as root, but I just tried it, and it doesn't work on the stock ROM.
I checked and it looks like one of the other main explorers, Astro, doesn't work as root either.
Maybe try the Root Explorer app (hmm, though I see you have to pay for it) ? Anyone else have recommendations ?

If you are willing to pay for the "Root Explorer" app, which you will find on the Android market, then that should do what you want (i.e. give you a file explorer app that will work as root).

Did you deodex your system?
What is deodex?
Sent from my A953 using XDA App
I guess that means "no".
So thats what you can do:
1) You can download the .apk files and place them in your System/app folder. (I recommend this)
2) Flash your device.
3) Download another app (Most stupid idea)
PS: Where are you from? (What version of MS2 do you have? like French/Brazil etc)
Brazil.
Where can I find this apk and how can i put it in that folder?

Do you know how to use ADB? lol.. sorry i really dont know any other RootFile manager :/.. so you either could buy Root Explorer.. or illegally download it somewhere....... there are ways, but i recommend ADB as an alternative (All you need is a Windows PC, USB Cable and AndroidSDK)
Alternatively you could try to find a Root Explorer alternative by searching the Market (I didnt find any): https://market.android.com/search?q=root+explorer&c=apps
But yes all you have to do is:
Download BlurContacts.apk -> http://www.death-force.com/downloads/Milestone%202%20Archiv/Milestone2_OriginalApps/
Download BlurContactsSync.apk -> http://www.death-force.com/downloads/Milestone%202%20Archiv/Milestone2_OriginalApps/
And use a FileExplorer or ADB to put these files into:
Code:
/system/app/
on your Device
EDIT: OH SORRY.. i totally forgot you can use the terminal hehe.. didnt think about that.. so just put the .apk files on your SDCARD
then download: https://market.android.com/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&feature=search_result
And type this into the terminal:
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
cp /sdcard/BlurContactsSync.apk /system/app
cp /sdcard/BlurContacts.apk /system/app
chmod 0644 /system/app/BlurContacts.apk
chmod 0644 /system/app/BlurContactsSync.apk
mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
reboot
It didnt work, i think the problem is the apk file. The terminal and the explorer could not install it there was an error
Sent from my A953 using XDA App
What do you mean.. error .. were you able to even install the Files of the Market? Or didnt even that work?
I installed roor explorer and the terminal but they could not read the apk files

they should NOT read the apk files....
you just need to move the .apk files into the folder: /system/app on your Mobile Fone...

[Q] SU files installed but not giving permission via ADB

I've been trying to fix my kindle fire for a while now. My ultimate problem is that my build.prop is not in my /system/ but I have been trying to push a replacement build.prop to that directory to no avail. It looks like I have superuser installed. Superuser.apk is in system/app/ and there are a few SU directories around my file system.
My problem is that even though I have SU in my file system, I am not getting the correct permissions when accessing the KF through adb. Whenever I type in su it says permission denied. Similarly, whenever I try to change the permissions for /system/ I am denied as well. Whenever I type in su, it says "segementation fault".
It seems to me that there are three possibilities:
1. I somehow have the superuser files in place but the SU program itself is not installed.
2. SU is installed but because I can't fully boot up my KF, I can't give ADB Root access through SU because I can't pull up the "allow access" dialog box.
3. Something stupd like I"m trying the wrong commands.
Maybe your kindle auto updated and broke root? But if you've already updated and re-rooted I'm not sure what the issue would be.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
hmmm...I think a main thing I need to know for sure before I continue is if my phone is even rooted for sure. I have the superuser.apk in system/app. I don't have anything in data/local. I have a SU directory in a couple places. Is there any way for ADB to recognize if a phone is rooted (perhaps if the file system is set up a current way?) without having access to root priveledges itself?
Same here, BurritoRoot, I've tried this on both Linux/Mac, but either way, I can never get su to work so my Kindle can be r/w.
Maybe try
adb shell
$su
If $ changes to # you have root.
When installing su check the file permissions on the directory as well.

but after issuing the comand:

Unable to pull/push (ADB) from system.

Hi guys I've tried everything but I am not able to achieve it. So I will explain step by step what I've tried pleas help me for gods sake.
- I want to pull my clockworkmod backups from /data/media/clockworkmod/backup/ (in the root - not the emulated sd card)
1)
C:\Android SDK\platform-tools>adb pull /data/media/clockworkmod/backup /backup
remote object '/data/media/clockworkmod/backup' does not exist - - Stange. The directory is this one i've checked with root explorer
C:\Android SDK\platform-tools>adb pull /charger /charger
failed to copy '/charger' to '/charger': Permission denied This is a random file in the root and it finds it this time - even stranger but I have no Permissions so I try to fix that.
2) to fix permissions I've tried this:
>> adb shell
>> su
>> mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
and after that trough shell:
>>adb pull /data/clockworkmod/backup -> and I get device not found
If I exit to adb again the same from point 1) happens
With this still the same as 1)
adb> adb shell su mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
Any ideas? I am curious from technical point of view and I want to achieve it also. Please don''t recommend alternatives like copy ot SD card and then to PC. I wanna achieve this one

Yes I don't have problems with ADB/Fastboot it I can use them, the problem is only with the mounting/accessing the system partition.
Well the device doesnt show up when in shell:

Don't worry about the shell. I think the problem is cwm doesn't use the file structure correctly. It's actually in some weird place which I don't remember. Even though you see it in root explorer, or whatever you're using.
In your charger example,I believe charger is a file and not a directory. Adb is trying to pull a directory called charger which doesn't exist.
I'll look around a little to see if I can find where cwm stores the backups

You're welcome, if you can't find the cwm backups you can check rom manager app. Under "backup current ROM" on main menu it should show the backup path.
