Nexus 4 SIM not being detected - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just bought a second hand N4 to try out Android (WP8 user here).
The guy I purchased off showed me his SIM was working in it fine but since taking it home I haven't been able to get any SIMS to work in there. I have tried quite a few, all of which work in other phones.
I've done a factory reset multiple times, rebooted the phone multiple times and even tried starting in recovery mode. Nothing I do seems to be able to get any SIMS working.
Really frustrating experience as otherwise the phone works fine on wifi. Really hope someone can help me as otherwise I just spent $180 on a dud!

i'd try stopping at a tmobile store and replacing the sim card....you shouldn't get charged.

Thanks but I already got a new sim today with no avail. I've tried 3 different sims now, and none of them work in my phone. But all work in other phones.
I'm in Australia too btw

Make sure your phone is shut down before inserting one.

Try to flash the 4.4.2 as a new phone.

Is this really likely to work? I'm hesitant to try this as I'm new to Android and have no idea how to do this...and have heard many horror stories of flashing and rooting going wrong.

Evening/Morning Matey. Just out of curiosity. I take it your phone is confirmed as being a sim free, carrier unlocked version?
Or at least your using the Same provider as the guy you bought from.

I've had this problem too. Try to use an adhesive tape on the side of sim card to prevent a short circuit with the metalic tray of sim card.
It worked for me.

X1a 'Sim card Missing'

I bought a used X1a from a reputable seller on ebay.
When I inserted the sim for the first time I was greeted by a 'sim card missing' notification. I wondered if my sim was broken so I inserted another sim and was greeted by the same notification.
I then hard reset the phone 2 times using the "left+right+power button" and software program, but sadly the xperia still showed the same error.
I then read that if I stick something in beetween the simslot and the battery forcing the sim to touch the connectors it might work. It didnt
I then read that a radio rom might change it but havent found or learned how to use one yet.
I use Rogers in Canada:
ROM: 1.02.948.8 (09/17/08
Radio: 1.06.25.29
Please help
Hmmmm....well there's stuff you can do to check and see what's wrong. Honestly.....if I were you.....id be more insistent on getting the device changed. Coz damn....its doing this on the very first run. Go back to the ebay dude and report it.....get another one
had the same problem. i jsut took the simcard out, reinserted it and voila ... it worked.

I took it out many times and reinserted it but it still says that my sim card is missing.
Did you insert the sim in any special way?
Even though it came unlocked im thinking it might have locked it self to a past sim card.
I remember when I inserted my old sim from my W910(unlocked) to a friends n95(unlocked) it wouldnt work. It also told me to insert a sim.
Is there any unlock software for the xperia, I know it comes unlcoked but I want to try.
I fixed it...................
Wow after having so many phones I cant believe I missed this.
I had the sim in the wrong way.
Stupid me.
Thanks for all the help.

Galaxy S cant find sim card

Today i went to the gym, and when i was done and picked up my phone in the locker i needed to call someone. I called but it froze during the attempt to call so i turned the phone off (i could turn it off normally, so i didnt pull out the battery). When i turned it back on i had no signal at all, and went to mobile networks settings to check. I got the message that i had to insert my sim card to edit the settings.
My phone was running JM5 rooted. I tried switching sim card to see if my sim card somehow stopped working during those 2 hours but that didnt help either. I then tried reflashing (now have JM7 on it) and i still have the problem where it wont find my sim card.
Is there anything i can do besides send it to be repaired? I'd prefer not to do that seeing as i really hate waiting for it to come back.
You have probably tried it, but I'd get a cotton bud and clean the contacts both on the phone and the sim card. I've had that happen twice, but not on my SGS.
Yea tried that already.. thx for the suggestion though.
I guess i better hand it in to the repair shop.
I also have this issue with my SIM card, i go to flight mode and return back to normal mode seems to fix the issue ive also cleaned the contacts before and it didnt seem to occur again..

Yeah i have tried that, it's not working either. Tried several different Roms and different modem/radios too. This sucks.
I have the same problem. It started after I flashed JVK on my phone. I thought it was the firmwares fault, but I still have the same problem after flashing JS8. I think I'll be asking my provider for a new SIM. I have a feeling that the SIM might be the answer to our problem

[Q] no service

I have just received a Nexus 4 off ebay today. Said it was a month old, unlocked etc.
I got it for the Mrs. She powered it up, and inserted her O2 sim and it said "no service".
We haven't done a thing to the phone but turn it on. Is there a reason for this?
I've attached the software details.

Have you tried to set the Settings->Wireless&Networks->Mobile Networks->Network operators on "Choose automatically"?
It may have been set to another carrier by the previous owner.
Clicking set automatically doesn't seem to do anything. And when she clicks mobile networks, which usually shows a list, nothing happens.

Have you tried adding your APN manually

http://www.geeksquad.co.uk/articles/chapter/595-04-how-to-set-apn-settings-for-the-02-mobile-network
Take the sim out and make sure its in properly, then re insert and reboot, and try again to find network, try choosing o2.
I had this problem and it just seemed to fix itself while doing the above
Wait is the IMEI present in settings?(don't post a photo)

It does come up with a IMEI when I go into settings. As you can see from the attached, there is no signal at all. I've tried mine and her sim. This phone looks brand new, the guy said he used it for a month, it's running 4.3. Everything works but this.

Did you update the APN or are you just going to keep telling us that the guy used it for a month and that it looks brand new?
Whats the point of even putting in an APN when I have NO signal and it can't even scan for networks.
Secondly, I think it's faulty. I noticed the sim tray isn't sitting flush, with or without a sim card inside. And more worryingly, I just tried the to add an APN, it didn't even save, and there is this rippling effect on the screen if I press the back of the phone, or front. It's in the exact same spot. Even holding the phone in the hand and gripping causes the effect, It's like an invisible stick is poking at the screen, distorting it. Hard to explain.
Maybe all this is irrelevant, but I'm suspicious.
Have you tried performing a hard reset? It could possibly be blacklisted, amongst other things.

Looks like the IMEI is blocked. This can mean the phone is reported stolen and therefore the IMEI is blocked.

Really? It's there a way I can check without first accusing this person?

one way, but i dont know if this will help you http://www.t-mobile.com/VERIFYIMEI.ASPX
heres another way https://prod.eie.net.au/portal/template/MYMIMEIInquiry.vm
Thanks for that. Both tests included a seperate paid one, show no problems, no blocked IMEI.
The only road I can think of to go down now is the whole unlocking bootloader, flashing other modems/roms etc.

is that micro sim working in another phone? if your sim card works in anotger phone, then the n4 itself is the issue. my first n4 i returned within a day, it wasnt reading any sim cards at all.
Both sims work fine in other phones. I'm so annoyed by this, it's near mint condition. This guy had to know it was faulty surly.

it could be the phone itself then. the n4 has a known issue with faulty sim readers. btw, was your sim cut down to a micro size or is it an actual micro sim?
btw, this simms works fine too
It's a proper micro sim. I just want to be sure that it's nothing my end before I start moaning and getting refunds. But at the moment I think there is no other option. Would trying to flash another radio make a difference? Or is it futile?

the radios might play a role for a little better or worse reception, but one wont not give you a connection and another will is highly improbable.
It's imei related. Since you stated it's present & not erased, that means it can't register with the network due to a possible blacklist.
Also micro Sims and normal Sims that are cut will both function in the nexus(I've tried both).

SM-N910F "No Sim Inserted" Issues

As the title suggests, my phone is coming up with "No SIM Inserted" warnings, and forces me to restart two or three times to get the problem to go away. This happens pretty much daily, at the minimum.
Restarting takes an annoying amount of battery and time, so it's a bit of a pain. The SIM eventually works, but it's not a good sign.
Since the card eventually works, I'd imagine that this is some sort of Firmware issue? My internet is horrible, so downloading it from sammobile would take forever. So I thought that I'd come get your guys opinion on it first on whether it's a hardware issue, or a software issue.. I've noticed a lot of other phones (such as the S4) having this issue, and I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience on fixing it?
It's unrooted so it's still under warranty.
Cheers,

First thing I would try is clean the sim card then factory reset with the sim inserted. I had to do this with mine (once) but thought it was just a glitch so never posted about it. After that I'd try another sim to test the handset or replace the sim card if it was the same.
Had this problem in one of my older phones, can't remember which.
At some point your SIM will stop working altogether and reboots just won't fix it anymore.
I contacted my provider and asked for a new SIM and that solved my problem.
I think it's worth getting a new SIM, or at least trying with a different one.

I'm not sure how I'd clean it, exactly. So I just sorta blew on it, and the tray. If it happens again I'll probably just get a new SIMcard.

The SIM is barely a year old, so it's a bit of a pain if I'll have to get a new one. However, it'd cost me nothing to get a new one, anyway.
Thanks a lot for your input. It only started happening about a week or two ago, so it probably is the SIM.

When I had that issue, it was with a few days old SIM, sometimes they're just defective. I know what you mean about the hassle though.

Problem with Moto G4 please help

My phone keeps saying "Connection Failed Reconnect" if I click on yes or no it does the same thing goes away then comes back and my phone cannot connect to cellular or gps. How can I fix this?
Have you done the basics like rebooting? I'd also reseat the SIM.
Failing that try a new sim.
Tried and it still does it.

I tried my brothers sim from his phone and it does the same thing.
Replace the phone then. Sounds like a dud.
I got the phone replaced and for a day the new one was working fine but now it is doing the same thing. Could the problem be with my sim card or did I get another bad phone?
