[Image] How TINY dead pixels would look like on your Z1 - Try it yourself! - Xperia Z1 General

EDIT: I added an image [1920x1080] in post #8 below for you to see how tiny two adjacent dead pixels would look on the Z1's super dense display
The Sony Xperia Z1 has a 1080p display. That's 1920x1080 pixels. That makes the display carry a total of 2,073,600 pixels.
I somehow managed to find the two dead pixels that were who-knows how long already there. two, out of more than 2 million.
The chances of looking at one random pixel and finding one of these two dead ones are literally less than one in a million.
I couldn't take a photograph of my dead pixels without using the reverse lens mounting technique to make a regular lens work as a macro lens.
Only then was I able to snap this particular photograph. Oh, and while we're on the topic of displays, just look at how the blacks are really black - you can't see any dimmed pixels, it just looks black!
Whispering: "I see dead pixels" by Herman Groenbroek, on Flickr
As another side note: the two dead pixels are smaller than the average piece of dust. For reference, there's an actual piece of dust just out of focus in the upper left part of the Album App in my photograph.

I have a stuck one on my tablet Z
But its only noticeable on black, its a red dot
Of course a lone red dot on a 10 inch display doesn't bother me one bit
But if it was on my Z1 then I'd go crazy-male-*****-mode(only for a few seconds then i suck it up)
Sent from my C6906 using Tapatalk

being slight of an OCD could bother me
but being that tiny... i might even forget it myself sooner or later

Yeah would drive me nuts, lol. Just got my Z1 last week and was first thing I checked, luckily no dead pixels.
I remember not so long ago, dead pixels were more common. Last few phones I bought were OK. I seem to have worse luck with tablets. :/

The first moment I switched on my Z1 I have noticed 2-3 dead pixels. Next day I got a replacement

id be mad.
i had the tiniest bit of dirt under my ipad screen 2 weeks after i got it. couldnt see it without holding the ipad right up to my face. i still got Apple to replace it.
as one of the pics points out. once seen it cant be unseen.

It cannot be unseen, but the fact is, the pixel density is so high that you really cannot see the two pixels from normal distance.
Try it yourself: grab an image of 1920x1080 pixels and make two pixels black. Then view it on your Xperia Z1.
It is really difficult to see. It's much smaller than the average piece of dust, which is already tiny.

Here's a test image if you want to know what two dead pixels would look like.
I made a white image of 1920x1080 with two dead pixels linked (much like my two dead pixels on the Z1) somewhere in the image. Try to find it on your PC first, then transfer it to your Z1.
Now, try holding your phone at normal reading distance. See how tiny the two pixels are? They're really tiny.
The funny thing is, this is the 'optimal' condition for the pixels to be visible, since there is never more contrast between the dead pixels and the image than this black and white image. You can guess yourself how invisible these pixels would be if there's a regular image showing on the display.

2 Nexus Ones Side by Side: Significant Difference in Screens!

I found a dead pixel in my first nexus one so I decided to swap it. The new one arrived today and I played with them side by side. The screens are very clearly different between the two. With everything set up identical and the same brightness setting, the one with the dead pixel is very clearly washed out looking with a greenish bluish tint to it. I actually noticed this somewhat before receiving the swap but thought it might be my imagination (the screen didn't seem as clear as my previous t-mobile version.) However, with them next to each other the difference was night and day.
I tried to get a good pic of it, but my photography skills are lacking and this is the best I could get. In person the one on the left (new one) is way better looking. The one on the right (sending back for dead pixel) has nowhere near the contrast and feels washed out, greenish, and unsharp.
So to conclude, if you think your screen might not be as as good as it should be, you may be right. I can't help but wonder if the dead pixel was just a symptom of a larger problem with the screen; perhaps the significantly reduced battery life I experience (compared to the t-mobile version I originally had) is also related to a screen issue. Time will tell...

Update: Here's a better pic. Especially note the green tint and washed out look at the top right where the time is displayed. Look back and forth between them. I edited the color slightly so that what you see more closely resembles what I see. In person the brightness appears the same for both even though the right one looks brighter in the pic.
I agree that the dead pixel could of been part of a bigger problem, but the way the picture came out it appears as if the one on the right is alot sharper.
You should try turning the brightness down on the phones before taking the picture. Also did you lose a flash, or is this effect just from it being at 100%brightness?
I know it looks that way, but it's just a crappy pic. I'll try again later today before I send the phone back. I didn't use flash, and screen brightness had no effect on the difference between the phones.
I actually prefer the the one on the right. The one on the left looks way too reddish/pink. Have you done a side-by-side comparison on the lowest brightness setting and going to a white screen page like Google?
the one on the right kind of looks like the color on a droid screen
The one on the right is far more color accurate. The one on the left looks like my T-mo launch N1, which has blown out reds and makes everyone's faces red in pictures that I take until I move them to a PC with a proper screen.
Color accuracy should be preferred over "pop" and "vibrance", IMO

Agreed, I wonder if HTC received a delivery of defective AMOLEDs from Samsung and just decided to use them rather than return them...
I had a similar issue. My old Tmobile N1 had a the blueish tint (like the picture on the right) but I had a dead pixel.
My new Tmobile N1 has the purple tint (like pic on left) and has no dead pixels yet. I've had them equal amount of time now.
I wonder if perhaps the old screens were having dead pixel issues and HTC decided to go with some different screens?
It could also just be the backlighting. The LED that's being used probably just emits at a higher temperature, eg more bluish-white.

With AMOLED there is no backlighting. Each pixel is its own LED, red green and blue ones, emitting its own light.
I've taken more pics at different light levels. Here's one with the brightness set all the way down. I edited the colors slightly so that what you see more closely resembles what I see in person. The left one does not have a purple or red tint; its colors are correct. The right one definitely has a green tint and is washed out looking. Also, in person the brightness of the two appears the same even though my camera picked up the green tint of the right one making it appear brighter in the photo.
Look at the top right where the clock is displayed to really notice the green tint and washed out look. Look back and forth quickly at the time...
My phone had the same effect of the left one, that is when I first got it. Over time, it starter to slowly lose that red/purple like tint, and the colors became more sharp and correct.
i think amoled screens are somewhat of an organism
I just got my replacement phone from HTC due to dust under the screen on my original N1 (purchased second day of release).
I noticed that the newer phone had quite a few differences, including the quality of the screen. See my post about my observations here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655966
INTERESTINg..How much more battery life did you get with the new one?

Display has yellowish tint to it. Help!!

So my excitement kinda came to an early end last night. I got my second replacement mt4g due to a bad screen. This one is perfect...except that when I was reading some text on a page with a white background, I noticed that from bottom to top, the white gradually goes from white to this yellowish tint. I will post a picture of it later on tonight.
My question is, do you have/had this problem and did you end up returning it or did it go away kind of like when this was happening to the iphone 4? I really hope this really doesn't become a full-blown issue like with the washed colors, because then I would have to request a 3rd replacement and make sure that it doesn't have dead pixels, dust under the screen, washed out colors, yellow tint, crooked ffc, creaky buttons, and gaps around the bezel. Thanks.
Here is an example of what i'm talking about except my display is white at the bottom and gradually goes to the color of the phone that is on the right, at the top.

Do you think that the problem is improper screen calibration and all I have to do is wait for a software update?
225 views and one reply?? Really guys?? Not trying to sound like I'm whining, but this is a serious problem and I think i'm not the only one. I just received my replacement, and it too has this yellowish tint towards the top of the screen. This will be my 4th time that I will be requesting a replacement, so in total so far, 4 defective phones.

I'm sorry, but it's really difficult to tell based on the picture you linked. Is there any way you can take a comparison photo with a good screen?
I can't see anything wrong from that photo. It will take something more than this to let others know if you have a problem.

The blacks never looked grayish, the colors were bright, crisp and vibrant, it was when looking at something with a white background. This issue has nothing to do with the washed screens that people are getting.

I figured it out based on a chat I had with a friend. I think that the backlight was improperly calibrated or something. Sorry that I can't take a better picture as I have already received my exchange which is much much better, the light is just more distributed evenly then the previous phone. Plus it doesn't creak, the ffc is dead centered, and light doesn't leak through between the bezel and the screen at the top of the phone. After 4 exchanges(5 phones total), I finally got a "perfect" device.
Here is a side-by-side shot sort of(I returned the defective device before I could think of take a pic of them together due to my excitement!)
You can easily tell that the screen of the phone on the right has way more light at the bottom of it and the top doesn't which results in a more obvious yellowish tint. The phone on the left (good one) doesn't have it as bad, the light is distributed evenly. Both were on auto brightness. The good display's(right) brightness is down a bit more but it doesn't matter since I tried to increase and decrease the brightness on the defective one(left) and it made no difference.

DSLR Photo Illustration of visible screen burn + ink marks issue

Hey xda members,
just had a bit of spare time so I decided to make some photos of my GS2 while displaying a totally black screen.
Normally you can only see these "effects" when you're in a completely dark room while looking at the GS2 being the only light-emitting source through its display.
Note: The actual purpose of this thread is to educate those people who can't imagine what burn-in/ink marks look like in reality. That's it, just plain visual information.
So I hope this isn't an issue even if there may already be a similar thread
I made some of the photos with the roomlights turned off and others with a very dim light.
The photos were shot using a Nikon D3100 DSLR with long exposure/high aperture settings.

As you can see in the first photo (below), even if the GS2's display shows a completely black image, which should result in a black display (OLED = pixel off) it shows weird marks and still emits a tiny amount of light.
In the second photo I have marked all the relevant weird spots (including screen burn-in caused by grey status bar [see below, marked by arrow])
The OLEDs in the burn-in area seemed to wear out faster because of the static grey shade it was displaying all the time thus resulting in this permanent color change in the affected area.
This burn-in was apparently caused by this theme which I was using for several months. As you can see, even the status bar in a dark grey shade can cause burn in.
A couple of more photos (with different white balance):
See below for photos in full resolution:
Hope this helps in any way and gives those people an impression who can't really imagine how screen burn-in can be caused and how these display issues (ink marks) actually look like when you capture them properly.
Very interesting indeed. Thanks for the great images, it's certainly an eye-opener to one of the main drawbacks of S-AMOLED screens.
Regards.

Roughly about nine months, bought it in October 2011.
Sent from my SGS2.
Hope this is no news? Every AMOLED burns in (like crazy). Been doing that since the first models were on the market.
Every SGS2 has it, whether people say yes or no. On my SGS2 it was clearly visible after around six months. Knew it beforehand so it was no biggie/surprise.

Yeah, also knew it before buying but I never thought the burn-in would look like that so I thought I'd share my experience with the world
While it does look pretty bad on the photos, you can't really see these issues when the screen is turned on with decent brightness, so it's no issue for every day use, but it would be interesting to know how the burn-in looks like if you use your phone for example 3 years.
Still, it looks already really horrible after 9 months of use when you look at the photos. I hope the OLED-technology makes a giant leap forward in the next years so one day these display issues will be a thing of the past.
thanks for the images, i find it disgusting to have that burnt in on a topline expensive phone in short time.
this is my first amoled phone so i dont know what to expect after a year or so, its bad for those who keep thier phones long term, would like to see how the screen is in 5 years time
is it bad when you watch a movie?

Well, it depends while watching a movie. Sometimes I can see the burn-in in movies with a lot of dark scenes, in other movies this issue is not apparent.
Either way..since I discovered this issue, I cannot ignore it anymore which doesn't mean it annoys the hell out of me but still it's a pity to see the phone 'degrading' already after not even a year and spending a lot of money on it.

ya its really annoying especially with my mentality that when I spend a huge amount of money on a tech kit I expect it to give me like 2+ years minimum

**Attn Gear VR users**

Please be advised, it is entirely possiable to receive an S8 or S8+ with dead pixels that are not visiable to the naked eye!
Please learn from my experiance with my S7 Edge; I purchased my GearVR a month after I had purchased my phone from another country... It wasn't until I tried my phone with my GearVR that I realised i had many dead pixels, in fact, the dead pixels are so bad, large and distracting when using my gearvr, that this is the sole reason why I am upgrading my phone to an S8.
Do yourselves all a favor, looks for dead pixels with your gearvr as soon as possiable.
Note; I was able to locate the dead pixels without a gearvr, using a lens from a google cardboard but the task is difficult, you have to hold the lens at the propper distance because you cant see them if it is not focused (obviously)
I think its ludicrous consumers only have 14 days to evaulate the condition of the phone and its display before they have acces to a gearvr to effectively evaluate the phones display for vr use...
Easiest way to check for dead pixels with gearvr, watch a bright film in the oculus cinema.
If you guys think dead pixels are bad on a monitor, wait until you have tried it in vr!
Thank you for the heads up. Will try asap. Does it happen more with a specific version? The S8 or S8+? Or both equally screwed?
Can just get a super high rez solid white photo (larger than the screen resolution) and look for them that way with a magnifying glass I imagine.
Will the S8+ fit or work in the previous Black Gear VR? I still have that one from the Note 7.
What you can do if you dont have new gearvr, it can happen with them all, its just the luck of the draw, this will end when one day sammy can produce displays that have high enough ppi that even in vr mode you will not be able to see dead pixels even if they are present.

You can try that, have to get that focus just right. White background actually does not work! The ppi is so dense and the white is so bright, the whitelight bleeds into nearby dead pixels disguising them. Try to find a solid dark green or dark blue background (but not too dark) and yes, brightness should be max.
The thing is with the magnifying glass, finding a display with 0 dead pixels, that actually may be unrealistic... but finding a display without deadpixels that are within the gearvr field of view, that might be much easier (and more reasonable) task. Now mind you, in saying all that, remeber, were talking only about dead pixels that are only visable in gear vr mode.
If you get a phone with dead pixels that are visible to the naked eye, thats really bad!! Remember these phones have high ppi so what you see is not a single dead pixel but rather a cluster of dead pixels and a cluster of dead pixels can spread...
On my S7 Edge I have at least 20 dead pixels and as hard as I have tried, not one is visable to the naked eye!
The point im also trying to make; we really need our gearvr before the clock starts ticking for the "change your mind" policy samsung offer.

Yup, just tried it myself. Software runs fine. It just made the fit though.
Are those 400 x 1440 extra pixels used at all in VR? My guess is no, because the optics and software were probably designed for 2560 x 1440.

Unbelievably numerous dead pixels on front camera sensor

I found 24 dead pixels on my Xperia XZP front camera photo.
(White and red, some are very dim but the others are bright enough.)
I've used many smartphones from different manufacturers and this is unbelievable.
Sony, do you even check the camera sensors before you put it in and seal the product?
What kind of quality control is this? For the 'Premium' product?
http://imgur.com/RYvFw0J
I just checked mine and I don't have any.
I agree that quality control "should" be better from all OEM's but sometimes a defective piece of hardware will sneak by. Use your warranty. Look on any forum for any phone and you will find complaints about some piece of hardware being bad from day one. I think all manufactured items have issues. It's just that there are not as many forums for everything else as there is for cell phones.
Then why didn't just simply replace it instead of whining here?
It doesn't matter how expensive something is, there WILL be lemons and nothing can be 100% perfection.
Tons of high-end monitors costing 7-900 euros can come with dead-pixels. It's just the nature of how displays are made.
Also, if you really believe they are able to check literally every phone you're delusional.
No problems on mine.
I'm going through the replacement process which is very exhausting, I don't know why you think I'm just whining here keeping this cursed product unit.
I know manufacturing can't be perfect and if it was 1 or 2 dead pixels, I would quietly do what I need to do as you like it.
But when it is 10~20 dead pixels on a single product I think it is insane. And it is not only me in my area.
Then I think it is something enough to talk about.

yes they can effect pictures taken. when under the right ISO level they can be really visable. most of the time though, no you wont notice them. since I just have them on the front camera which I never use I'm not too worried about it but for $800+ you expect fewer then this. if I had them on the back sensor like the front, I definitely would return, but from what I just read returning them for the front seems useless as they all seem to have it bad.
I put in a order for a chrome version, if that has less I'm returning the black one.
EDIT: Returned my deepsea black for Chrome and same results, bunch on the front none on the back. the chrome seems to have less which is a good thing I guess.
