[Q] only 2g Data after 4.4.2 official update via KIES - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have an issue with my gt-i9505.
It was running fine, I received the 4.4.2 OTA update, but it failed several times.
So hooked it up to the PC and used KIES 3 ( latest version ) to update to the latest build.
Suddenly I only had 2G data connection left, I tried switching to WCDMA only and it showed me this circle with a diagonal line in it.
After that I tried rebooting several times, but to no avail.
After this I replaced the sim card, same issue ( went to the provider store to get a replacement ).
So still with this issue, I booted up the recovery and did a hard reset.
Still the same issue.
It is very annoying as I am relying on my mobile data a lot.
Anybody any clue?

1. Paste here one screenshot of what appears in Kies 3
2. Dial *#1234# and paste here one screenshot too pls

For the kies question, what do you want to see in the screen shot ?
Here Is the 1234 screen.
PS im from the Netherlands and this is a Vodafone branded phone.

Kies 3 will tell you that ur phone no is recognized. But I need the screenshot where tells u the firmware, PDA and CSC. The other u can hide it if u wish it
*EDIT:
1. The problem is that ur phone is branded. Vodafone haven't any update to android 4.4.2. Your phone is a lil crazy for that.
2. Dont lie us pls. You didnt update ur phone by OTA or Kies 3 either. We are working here for free for help ya

Here is the screen from kies.
Can't upload Screenshots yet from PC :/

I am not lying, I am actually serious!
I have rooted the mobile device before though and had flashed several ROM's for testing, but all had 2g/3g/4g working.

Suddenly it all makes sense to me!
This is what I think happened:
I connected the phone to KIES while on the custom firmware, the CSC code must have been set to Bulgarian or something...
Since i did not change CSC afterwards on regular 4.3, I think the value was still set to bulgarian, because now that i think about it I saw the disclaimer in a weird language to me...
So downloading the proper firmware now.
Waiting for it and will flash and check back in here...
I feel stupid.
Well... That didn't work either.
Going back to 4.3, praying almost..
Edit: can't downgrade.
Oh wonderful day
Edit: restored but still only 2g....
Edit:
Just keeps getting weirder and weirder.
I was in another town and suddenly saw the G logo change to E
When I was almost leaving the city I had a working 4G connection.
I leave the town and back at G again sadly...
Seriously this thing is freaking me out...

Bump.
Still the same issue, Provider is at a loss as well it seems.
Samsung is looking into replacing the handset, but deciding if they will takes them a week.
The help received here is very appreciated.
Hope you guys can help me solve this.

Checked my sim in a S3 and well... It worked !
Got instant 3G connection.
So now we can surely say it is the phone.
Also flashed agian with 4.4.2 official stock rom, issue is persistent.
Hope you guys can help me

Self bumping ...

Hello Repulsa,
Yes I did,I even recreated it via settings on the mobile provider website, even after that only the 2G connection works.
When I go into servicemode, none of the suggested key inputs give me anything, it just stays on that page.
If connected to the GSM network (900), I will see it as connected in the service menu.
When I select WCDMA it shows me that it is unavailable.
IF it sees a WCDMA connection, it shows no data and on registering it on the network all connection is lost.
If it sees the WCDMA connection it will state Band1 and IDLE constantly, it will go to active for 10 seconds and jump back to IDLE.
Also:
In this servicemenu it states :
IMEI Certi : NA
But if I do *#06# the correct IMEI is shown...

Well, it didn't work so went to the service center.
you want to know their answer:
We can't do anything for you!
When i showed him the servicemode menu, he was stunned and did not know what it was...
My provider is refusing to help me in a quick way, now calling Samsung praying for help.
But really, I've missed 2 agenda appointments and had to drive home! to get wifi to load google maps...
Still they say i have to wait for them.
This is insane!
For all of you :
Thank you so much for all your effort and help!
Edit:
For now I have switched to the evil apple....
You guessed it, EVERYTHING works!
On the gt-i9300 : Everything works.
Edit2:
So on advice of Samsung I have flashed CM to my phone.
It did not resolve the issue, but might shed some light on it.
It constantly showed an E, so there was an Edge connection...
When in the menu I switched to CWDMA only and phone process crashed.
So tried another setting, only GSM : Again failure and a crashing phone process...
Only setting to worldwide or LTE lets me connect to Edge, nothing else.
And to make it more fun, I tried with a sim of a person next to me with also a GT-I 9505, with a SIM that supports 4G and on a location where we verified there was 4G coverage and saw it on his phone.
So booted CM for the first time with his sim and the result was the above.
I can now safely say : this is a hardware issue to my opinion.
Also noticed that some of my SMS messages have been sending 8 times , 10 times or even not at all for some!
If anybody wants to have a last shot at this: Be my guest, but I am not expecting this thing to work as it should anymore.

I just checked my pc and checked my AV software ( the only consistent software between my machines) and found out that a lot of DLL files used by kies were blocked by my AV ...
Can this help understand the issue?
It even blocked adb-windows.exe from being loaded.
What I will do :
Remove the AV from the pc.
Run the AV removal tool.
Reboot
Reconnect the phone.
Reflash it.
See if issue is resolved.
Will post back later today.
Fingers crossed people!
P.S.: AV is Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 with protected mode ENABLED.

Final update.
Ok, so I changed the CSC to VDF...
Was on SIM.
Still no 3G, only 2G.
On a different provider it goes up to Edge.
Could it be the IMEI Certificate is used for higher speed connections?
Either way, this phone is a drama.
And well the 'service' from samsung hasn't really been optimal.
After it has been swapped, I'm going for a different brand.

[How To] Enable HSUPA on Captivate

Okay, I'm sorry guys, I made a huge mistake and didn't test an actual voice call before posting this guide. I saw it connect to the network, and the data including HSUPA worked, but voice calls have no sound. Not only that, but this DOES only work on 1900 MHz, so if you're in an 850 MHz area, you won't be able to connect to a tower. So for now, this guide is no good. Not all hope is lost though. There are compatible Canadian carriers, and when we get a radio file from them we can try again. For now, don't apply the EU radio to your Captivate or you won't be able to hear anyone in voice calls. Sorry again for not testing better before getting everyone's hopes up. I'll update this thread once I get a Canadian ROM to test.
Well, I've been pretty vocal about this issue, because it's one that really bothered me. Mainly because the Galaxy S supports HSUPA, and really, any new high end phone should. I suspected AT&T was disabling it on the Captivate, likely to save features like that for the iPhone 4, and it looks like that was right.
After a suggestion from trinikartel (thanks twice for good info that helped figure this out!), I flashed the i9000 JP3 modem firmware to the Captivate, and sure enough, the result was:

}
I've only been an Android owner for less than two weeks, so it took a little while to figure out at first, haha, but the process is very simple:
1. Download an i9000 firmware, I got the JP3 firmware from http://samsung-firmware.webs.com. See my note below
2. Extract the firmware and find the modem firmware tar file. I9000XXJP3.tar for JP3, not to be confused with I9000XXJP3.rar which was the whole archive. If you're not sure, open it up, it should have modem.bin in it.
3. Put your phone into download mode by turning off your phone, plugging it into your computer, waiting for the green battery charging icon to appear, then holding vol+ and vol- at the same time and holding power until the screen goes black, then releasing power ONLY until you get the yellow construction sign that says Downloading...
4. Use odin to flash the modem firmware file. I used all default settings, just click the PHONE button under files and choose the modem firmware tar file, then press start.
It should only take about 10 seconds or so then your phone will reboot and you're done. This is what you should see on odin:
Once it starts up, you can run a speed test to verify that it's working.
NOTES: Of course the standard disclaimer applies, flash at your own risk. Hell, I haven't even had an Android phone for 2 weeks yet and this is my first time flashing, so be careful. It should be a very easy process though.
In regards to step 1 above, I have only tested this with the JP3 modem firmware, however, that's a 2.2 beta or even alpha firmware, so use it at your own risk. Everything seems to work fine with it coupled with my stock JF6 ROM though. I don't see any reason at all why an i9000 2.1 modem firmware wouldn't do the same thing and be more stable though, I just haven't tested it yet. I'm about to test it now, and I'll update this in little while with the results, so if you don't want to use the JP3 firmware, wait a few minutes.
Very nice, it will be even better once they fix the upload issues on their network!
flashing now... I will report results asap.

Great job on the write up! Glad to have helped with this one...it's gonna be huge for everyone involved.

Okay, so there could be one possible issue, but I can't test it in my area. I don't know that the EU modem software will support 850 MHz 3G, but my area is only 1900, so it works fine.
This may cause issues with 3G for people in 850 MHz areas following this guide, but you can always flash back if you do have issues, so we'll know more after someone in 850 MHz area tries it.

Neither can I. As you can see it gives me a Tennessee server as my closest, but I live in Raleigh, NC. I know there is a server that's just down the road from me, but I can't get the damn thing to see the right servers. Just play around with different servers until you get one that seems pretty fast. Even with 10 or so servers closer, I found the Reston, VA server to be the fastest for me when it was finding the proper location.

I am in a 850Mhz coverage area, flashed to the 2.1 MODEM_I19000XXJM1.tar and couldn't connect to a 850Mhz tower. Usually when the phone is by my desk I am on 850Mhz, and I verify it by putting the phone in network mode *#0011#. After flashing the phone showed 1900mhz and poor -db, flashed back to default modem software and locked back onto 850Mhz band.
Someone else in a 850Mhz area should verify my findings that the modem firmware for the EU version disables 850Mhz band.
****, can someone try making a call that has done this mod? I connected, got internet and everything, but I'm not hearing anything in my calls. It looks like it's calling, I just can't hear anything. I guess I never tried actually making a call before posting this.
This whole guide may be pointless other than to show us that it is indeed a restriction in modem firmware.
haha, yup, nothing....

hi where did you find the default modem firmware ?
thanks
Guess we'll want to try and find the Canadian firmware since it will be 850mhz and see if that helps (when it's available).
-James
Well damn, sorry for the premature celebration on this one. I could deal with no 850 MHz 3G since we're only 1900 MHz in my area, even though that wouldn't be a good final solution for everyone, but no voice in call isn't good for anyone.
I guess disregard this guide for now. Like I said, I'm still new to Android, but I've asked and it looks like there's no way to modify the radio firmwares.
It looks like the best bet is to look to the Canadian versions, I know they have networks that run 850/1900. If it's just AT&T with the restriction, perhaps their radio will enable HSUPA without any issues.
Edit: Hah, James beat me to it, exactly what I was thinking. I know Rogers has a Galaxy S planned. As soon as I can get one of those firmware's I'll try this again. Sorry guys, a call should have been the first thing I did, that was my mistake!

If you haven't flashed anything from the first post, then don't worry about it. This ended up not working on the Captivate, so there's nothing to change right now. I just posted the stock radio for anyone who had done my mod before I realized the mistake. That way they don't have to download the entire firmware, they can download the smaller radio file.
Nice try man. Subbed for your future endevors

[Tutorial] Why my IMEI missing & NO network?

Your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is transmitted to the Network provider the moment you switch ON your phone
It is used by your Network to identify the following
1) The first two numbers is RBI (Reporting Body Identifier) = who registered that type of phone ( verify here )
2) The next four numbers is TAC (Type Allocation Code) = what type of unit and its complete specifications
3)The next two numbers is FAC (Final Assembly Code) = who manufacture it
example :-
01 AEG
04 Samsung
07 Motorola
10 Nokia
30 Ericsson
41 Siemens
50 Bosch
51 Sony
4) The next six numbers is the Serial Number of the Phone
5) The last number is sort of a check sum, that verifies the previous numbers
Combined a total of 15 numbers is used by your network to get the complete information about your phone that is used against their database of Blacklisted phones and final approval to connect to their network, IF they were inaccurate or had complaints (like being stolen, not paid telecoms dues etc) it will be rejected and BLOCKED immediately from connecting to that Network
You can verify all this by entering you IMEI here and here
And also here to check if it is blacklisted
Your IMEI is also needed for networks to BLOCK your phone when needed as well as ANTI theft apps.
Hence if your IMEI changes or gets lost, it may fail to connect to the network, depending on the restrictions of that network provider.
It is clear that Flashing custom ROMS can cause your IMEI to Change or get deleted as they may be ported from another manufacturer or from another version of the same manufacturer as the IMEI embedded in the chip of your phone.
IF you want to AVOID this problem, safe you EFS folder the moment you think of Flashing any ROM that is NOT the original Firmware for that phone
It is noted that to resolve this problem you have to return to its original firmware to recover your embedded IMEI and do a progressive upgrade . eg. from GingerBread to ICS before going on to Jelly Bean

I believe this is also possible as some of the manufacturers are using more than one FAC (Final Assembly Code) and some do have the same FAC....end of the day only the manufacturer would have chosen what they wish to use, on the other hand the checksum of the 15 numbers in total, should give the correct model and specs to the network .

I had this very problem tonight. Flashed back to stock to try and fix a camera problem, then just installed cm10 to fix the partitions and applied my JB backup.
That's when I hit the imei problem. When I copied the efs folder across and rebooted it didn't fix it, came up some error. Then I manually copied the imei folder across, and then manually copy/replaced the loose files from my efs backup across into efs, leaving the extra files that were there from the install.
Meaning instead of completely replacing the efs folder with my backed up one, just adding all the files from the backup folder into the installed efs folder, replace any with identical names though.
Rebooted and it worked fine saving me having to go back to GB and progressively work my way back up. Nice..

Nope...what you did has already been written and advised as a way, to resolve IMEI recovery by me in June 2012 and other methods were recently deleted by MODs as they can sort of edit the IMEI (which is illegal to do) ..so, no problem, you have done it in one way ( because you had a backup) and there are other ways too...all compiled on that link as well as My Android Solutions, link below
Just had a proper read through that thread. Thanks
I thought that the way I did it was a little different because it didn't work when I tried replacing the installed efs folder with my backed up one, maybe not though.

Note!
http://www.imei.info/ -I found the address in Chinese Wikipedia -
http://zh.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMEI -but I confirm that falsifies information.
nice info, I should try to look on those given threads about retrieving imei because I got one who's got unknown imei due to a noob upgrade without even backing up efs folder

For ways to resolve IMEI problems visit EFS Problems and Solutions or My Android Solutions

Galaxy y Duos 3G/HSDPA lost after rom flash

Hello guys,as the title says,i have this annoying problem.
After the phone came from warranty(due to a sod),the connection was ok.used 1 orange sim(1900mhz) and 1 data sim(umts 2100) without any problems.i got a very bad itch :banghead: and updated the rom to latest Croatia pack(MA1 if i'm not mistaken,i dont have the phone now,my gf does).i'm from Romania, wich is very close to Croatia.flashing went good,no problems, but now all i get is EDGE/GPRS connection.no 3g or hsdpa/hsupa.what could've caused this and, most important, how could i fix it?i looked for the original firmware, couldn't find it.it was something with XXLL9 or XXLA9.i already tried flashing another stock rom with odin, pit and bootloader.
if it is modem related, what version should i flash?thanks in advance.
PS,i tried searching function already, but it's almost impossible to use this function from tapatalk.
thank you

It may sound noobish, but what is the relation between the csc and 3g/hsdpa?On my note i can set the csc to brazil, canada, singapore or whatever country/region i want, but the highspedd connection remains,no matter what. This looks like a hw issue, but i'm trying to understand how could this happend.
i revived the phone with ROM S6102 DDLD4,pit and bootloader, since i noticed /data partition is getting corrupted very easy on this phone. Then I flashed this http://galaxy-updates.org/showthread.php?tid=83,(Croatia) since is newer version.Wanted to have a new base for any custom rom i would use. After this i flashed DreamFusion ICS.All installes were clean, with proper wipes.
Tomorrow will try stock LG3 firmware.
Besides, i always set the CSC to XEU(nordic countries),because there are some promotions on samsung apps on that region. It happend to me many times to get free games/apps from samsung apps, while on market they costed alot .

ok,flashed original firmware,an older version(made with splitfus),then let it update with kies to latest COA version. Applied csc for romania, all went well, except the connection.only Edge/gprs,no 3g/hsdpa.

He is saying he has 2g connection but not 3g.. flashing csc isnt the issue here i believe.. and he is talking about galaxy y duos phone.. which is under galaxy y section itself.. LG3 version he meant as in DDLG3 or DXLG3 like that..

Are you sure your setting is proper.. i mean have you set 3g connection to proper sim?? inside settings-->wireless networks--> mobile networks option?
Also, check in sim manager option to see if it has set to proper data connection if you have data connection on both sims.. you might be using the wrong sim here.. and make sure you are getting 3g reception in that area where you are trying to use 3g connection.. by putting that icon to some other phone with 3g capabilities.. or try changing sim slots and see if 2nd slot / vice versa may be able to connect..
My friend, i'm not that noob...Both sims working great with other phones,3g/hsdpa ok.
It also worked before i got that itch to flash new rom.The funny thing is,after the kies update, it is the same version i flashed with odin ...
I made some investigations, using secret codes.Status check with *#*#4636#*#*
Results are these:
Orange Sim(2G/3G-900-1900Mhz) : can connect only on EDGE,it shows network type EDGE only(while it should've been HSDPA)
Digi Mobile(Data only sim UMTS 2100Mhz) : The damn thing sees the HSDPA network type, but GPRS service disconnected.
I'm going NUTS:cyclops:

Well, I never told you a noob...
Those minor details might get overlooked when we try to troubleshoot.. so to be safe than sorry.. just made sure it wasn't the cause.. anyway... can you show screenshot of both sim setting if you don't mind? I mean , mobile network option(in settings)
It would help understand more.. have you tried contacting your service provider? What they told?

don't have to contact, since both sims are working on my note.also there is no signal issue,i live in an area with 43mbps coverage(H+).
will post screenshots as soon as i get home.
Here are the screens from service mode.
First is with orange sim, only EDGE
Second is with DigiMobil, GPRS, but disconnected. On this sim also it sees the HSDPA network type, but GPRS still disconnected.
The apn's are properly set, orange apn is detected automatically, while i set the digi apn myself.it's not hard, only 2 sections need to be completed

I know what you mean. First of all,my settings are not similar to yours,if you also have a Y duos.
I don't have network mode option like you do.But i went in service mode, with the secret code, and choose theer proper settings...
I don't have other options.all i have is dual sim manager and some suplimentary settings in wireless and network.
all of those are properly set,no problems there, since i do get edge connection on the 3g settings on orange sim.to be honest, i don't care about that sim, because i don't use data on orange.i'm interesting in data sim(digi mobile),but that network works only on UMTS2100.this means no gprs/edge connection will work....and this sux...big time.

Well, I do have y duos.. and I don't know why samsung choose to put that pop up menu instead of check box option only in indian stock version roms..anyway, I like it that way.. anyway.. I guess this is going no where.. as I'm not able to understand how you are not getting 3g if you have 3g coverage and if your sim was supposed to be able to connect to 3g networks.. you sure you have been able to connect to 3g with that same sim? And your carrier has not blocked 3g to that sim??
APNs missing your Simcard not download it auto you must manual
on orange, the apn is created automatically.2 apn's,mms and internet.
for digi,i create it myself,i need only name and apn to be completed.this is how it works here.it always have been like this.orange is a recognized provider and the apn is created when you insert the sim.
the sims are ok,i tested them on this note.
i guess i'll just send the phone to warranty, since it has the original software.

I have the same problem. i.e. it works great on 2g/gprs but the moment I change setting to WCDMA it gets disconnected and won't connect.
Driving me nuts as I tried to reset the phone few times to factory defaults, but still the same.
Not rooted.

Well, I think its a baseband issue as the two "XX" in your baseband version should be "JC"
A quick search on google led me to this site;
http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f45...known-baseband-successfully-repaired-1760141/
I would advise you to read it and follow the instructions, on your own risk of course.
Basicly you need a rooted phone and odin installed on your computer.
Then download the EFS file provided on the forum, and flash it with odin. They say it will give "error" message, but you should not wory about that.
At the end he says that you might need to follow these steps and it might take a while.
1 - Choose GSM in network settings.
2 - Turn "airplane mode" on.
3 - Call 112 (radio will be automatically activated) and DONT interupt, let phone end call itself.
4 - Power off the phone.
5 - Power on again and now let phone find the network itself, for him it took 2 hours, for his friend it took about 6 or 7 hours.
Try this and let us know if it worked!

First of all you need to see if the baseband is normal and need to see if the IMEI is normal if it is 0049 that is more trouble
If everything is normal, you can try to use Odin to restore or SPT-BOX software tools to repair my English is not very good sorry

What should I do to return to a normal use, I can't give a phone call. The rom is
Android 5.0 N9005XXUGPOF3
I have change The BB original to N9005XXUGBOA1
BUt allways "not registered to the network !!!
