[How To] Enable HSUPA on Captivate - Captivate Android Development

Okay, I'm sorry guys, I made a huge mistake and didn't test an actual voice call before posting this guide. I saw it connect to the network, and the data including HSUPA worked, but voice calls have no sound. Not only that, but this DOES only work on 1900 MHz, so if you're in an 850 MHz area, you won't be able to connect to a tower. So for now, this guide is no good. Not all hope is lost though. There are compatible Canadian carriers, and when we get a radio file from them we can try again. For now, don't apply the EU radio to your Captivate or you won't be able to hear anyone in voice calls. Sorry again for not testing better before getting everyone's hopes up. I'll update this thread once I get a Canadian ROM to test.
Well, I've been pretty vocal about this issue, because it's one that really bothered me. Mainly because the Galaxy S supports HSUPA, and really, any new high end phone should. I suspected AT&T was disabling it on the Captivate, likely to save features like that for the iPhone 4, and it looks like that was right.
After a suggestion from trinikartel (thanks twice for good info that helped figure this out!), I flashed the i9000 JP3 modem firmware to the Captivate, and sure enough, the result was:

I've only been an Android owner for less than two weeks, so it took a little while to figure out at first, haha, but the process is very simple:
1. Download an i9000 firmware, I got the JP3 firmware from http://samsung-firmware.webs.com. See my note below
2. Extract the firmware and find the modem firmware tar file. I9000XXJP3.tar for JP3, not to be confused with I9000XXJP3.rar which was the whole archive. If you're not sure, open it up, it should have modem.bin in it.
3. Put your phone into download mode by turning off your phone, plugging it into your computer, waiting for the green battery charging icon to appear, then holding vol+ and vol- at the same time and holding power until the screen goes black, then releasing power ONLY until you get the yellow construction sign that says Downloading...
4. Use odin to flash the modem firmware file. I used all default settings, just click the PHONE button under files and choose the modem firmware tar file, then press start.
It should only take about 10 seconds or so then your phone will reboot and you're done. This is what you should see on odin:
Once it starts up, you can run a speed test to verify that it's working.
NOTES: Of course the standard disclaimer applies, flash at your own risk. Hell, I haven't even had an Android phone for 2 weeks yet and this is my first time flashing, so be careful. It should be a very easy process though.
In regards to step 1 above, I have only tested this with the JP3 modem firmware, however, that's a 2.2 beta or even alpha firmware, so use it at your own risk. Everything seems to work fine with it coupled with my stock JF6 ROM though. I don't see any reason at all why an i9000 2.1 modem firmware wouldn't do the same thing and be more stable though, I just haven't tested it yet. I'm about to test it now, and I'll update this in little while with the results, so if you don't want to use the JP3 firmware, wait a few minutes.

Very nice, it will be even better once they fix the upload issues on their network!
flashing now... I will report results asap.

CONFIRMED WORKING!

Great job on the write up! Glad to have helped with this one...it's gonna be huge for everyone involved.
Double check to verify GPS, Bluetooth etc are still working like normal

Okay, so there could be one possible issue, but I can't test it in my area. I don't know that the EU modem software will support 850 MHz 3G, but my area is only 1900, so it works fine.
This may cause issues with 3G for people in 850 MHz areas following this guide, but you can always flash back if you do have issues, so we'll know more after someone in 850 MHz area tries it.

I can't get speedtest.net to work properly. It always thinks I am in Pennsylvania even when I am in central il.

Neither can I. As you can see it gives me a Tennessee server as my closest, but I live in Raleigh, NC. I know there is a server that's just down the road from me, but I can't get the damn thing to see the right servers. Just play around with different servers until you get one that seems pretty fast. Even with 10 or so servers closer, I found the Reston, VA server to be the fastest for me when it was finding the proper location.

thanks buddy!

I am in a 850Mhz coverage area, flashed to the 2.1 MODEM_I19000XXJM1.tar and couldn't connect to a 850Mhz tower. Usually when the phone is by my desk I am on 850Mhz, and I verify it by putting the phone in network mode *#0011#. After flashing the phone showed 1900mhz and poor -db, flashed back to default modem software and locked back onto 850Mhz band.
Someone else in a 850Mhz area should verify my findings that the modem firmware for the EU version disables 850Mhz band.

****, can someone try making a call that has done this mod? I connected, got internet and everything, but I'm not hearing anything in my calls. It looks like it's calling, I just can't hear anything. I guess I never tried actually making a call before posting this.
This whole guide may be pointless other than to show us that it is indeed a restriction in modem firmware.

haha, yup, nothing....

hi where did you find the default modem firmware ?
thanks

Guess we'll want to try and find the Canadian firmware since it will be 850mhz and see if that helps (when it's available).
-James

Well damn, sorry for the premature celebration on this one. I could deal with no 850 MHz 3G since we're only 1900 MHz in my area, even though that wouldn't be a good final solution for everyone, but no voice in call isn't good for anyone.
I guess disregard this guide for now. Like I said, I'm still new to Android, but I've asked and it looks like there's no way to modify the radio firmwares.
It looks like the best bet is to look to the Canadian versions, I know they have networks that run 850/1900. If it's just AT&T with the restriction, perhaps their radio will enable HSUPA without any issues.
Edit: Hah, James beat me to it, exactly what I was thinking. I know Rogers has a Galaxy S planned. As soon as I can get one of those firmware's I'll try this again. Sorry guys, a call should have been the first thing I did, that was my mistake!

The entire JF6 firmware can be downloaded here: http://www.multiupload.com/MGEJ5CZLWC
But I'll upload the radio only right now to make faster for anyone who may have followed this guide before I found the issues.
Edit: Here's the radio only. This is all you need to flash back to the Captivate JF6 radio. http://www.multiupload.com/YJMRCXANR0

If you haven't flashed anything from the first post, then don't worry about it. This ended up not working on the Captivate, so there's nothing to change right now. I just posted the stock radio for anyone who had done my mod before I realized the mistake. That way they don't have to download the entire firmware, they can download the smaller radio file.

Nice try man. Subbed for your future endevors

Do you simply flash the file with odin under modem?

[Q] 3G problems

I just got a nexus one last night. it was previously used on ATT and now i'm using it on TMobile. I noticed right away that it would not connect to 3G, only 2G. today I rooted it via rageagainstthecage and adb because it was already updated to 2.2.1. I was just wondering if anyone else had this issue and what can I do to fix it? Do I need to fix the radio or what? The specs of my nexus one are as follows:
Version: 2.2.1
Baseband Version: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-27240-gbca5320 android-build(at)apa26 #1
Build Number: FRG83
I experienced these issues even before rooting. I really appreciate any help.
Hi,
When I upgraded to Froyo on my N1 I didn't have any 3G, turned out 3G was disabled, I re-enabled it by going to the phone dialler and type in *#*#info#*#*, go to phone information and scroll down to the bottom, should be set to WCDMA preferred.
Something to think about as well, I recently upgraded to 5.08 radio since 3G was very patchy since moving to Froyo, works amazingly well for me, seems hit and miss for people but well worth a try at least.
how do i upgrade to that radio and will that work in the US?
also, i did the dialer thing and it is on that preferred one already, is there anything else i can do? or should i change it from that preferred one?
You can grab the radio from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723839
It will work for all Nexus Ones, make sure you have your phone fully charged before you do this as a failure while flashing will brick your phone. There is a couple of ways to flash it. I used fastboot, you just extract the zip file which contains radio.img, then do the following command, fastboot flash radio radio.img
ATT and TMO use different 3G frequencies in the US (1700 AWS for TMO). An ATT N1 can't use TMO's 3G and vice versa.
thanks, and i can do this without having a custom recovery? just use adb? and do i literally just type "fastboot flash radio radio.img" after going into cmd? sorry for all the questions, I just wanna make sure i don't mess anything up

the N1 was unlocked but was used for ATT, is there something I need to do to change it to TMO frequency if that's the case?
It is hardware. Unfortunately it's impossible.
Right, it's hardware, not firmware. You need a TMO-specific N1.
great...so will upgrading the radio do anything for me? and if so, do i extract the radio.img to the sdcard or to sdk tools folder?
Oops, sorry - forgot ATT and T-Mobile run different frequencies, you won't be able to do anything about it.

no
it's hardware. you can only get 3g FROM tmo on a tmo frequency phone, and only get 3g FROM ATT on a att frequency phone. ... see ?
if you're using att, they're going to slam you with a $30/month fee for smartphones too ;-)
You should be able to trade the phone - the at&t 3G version is no longer on sale, so it is much harder to get than the TMUS version ... you should easily be able to sell it/trade it for a TMUS version.

Wildfire Radio Change

hi all,
already searched but could not find a definitive answer.
basically, i have a htc wildfire a3335 (850mhz version) and accidentally flashed to an a3333 froyo (2.2.1) rom, losing the 850mhz (my carriers primary network).
obviously i need to change the radio, but have had no success so need some help.
either
1)revert radio to telstra
2)downgrade and reflash with stock 2.1 telstra rom
3)somehow force the new OTA froyo update
i currently have a generic htc rom, but i don't use the phone much, so the stock locked rom will work fine for my purposes (don't need to root or anything, just make calls).
if anyone can help and is in the local area (melbourne, australia) i will pay well for their time.
thansk in advance,
josh

If you don't have a custom recovery installed your gonna have to wait for alpharev, or search for the telstra froyo ruu on shipped-roms.com (which I don't think exists).
If you do have one like CWM or AmonRa, you can check this tread, I think that there's a link for the "flashable" telstra radio so you don't go back to a branded version...

i gave the noobs guide to downgrading another shot, seems to be downgrading now. its a tricky guide, not really for noobs, but my basic computer knowledge was enough to work it out. took about 45 minutes, mainly me being scared and paranoid
will post after the telstra ruu completes, then see if i can get the froyo OTA update (which i should have just been patient for in the first place )
phew! all done.
thanks very much for the downgrade guide, was a bit scary and needed a lot of concentration, but worked without a hitch.
long story short, if you want your telstra phone updated, be patient!
I have a Telstra phone that I upgraded to a stock WWE 1.37 ROM.
It works fine on the Telstra 3G network at high speed.
The frequency it operates on is dictated by the hardware, not the firmware.
However if you swap provider to say Optus, then it will switch to 2G operation as the Telstra phone hardware works at 850 Mhz (and others) while Optus netwrok runs at 900Mhz for 3G operation. Therefore the phone will drop back to the 2G frequencies and network and therefore run slower.
Go to shipped roms and select an HTC WWE rom (but not Froyo) and you will run at full speed. Likewise the custom ROMS will be fine also.

i dont think this is correct, 900mhz is optus's copy of telstra's country nextG network, called 'yesG' and is only for rural/remote areas
in most places optus etc run 3g on 2100mhz
i have a testra wildfire unlocked running virgin (optus network) 3g/hdspa fine, and i use a virgin dongle with an parabolic external antenna that only works on 2100
since unlocking ive flashed CM7 and a diff radio to get gps working, but i havnt tested to see if i lost 850 support. i will want this back though (if gone) at some stage so will be looking into this more.

I don't think flashing the radio to 3.35.20.10 makes any difference to Telstra's 850 availability.
I am fairly sure that Carnarvon only has the 850 frequency, and I am still getting a 3G indication and 2.5 Mbps download speeds (which is about normal), so I think we are safe!
Cheers
John in Sunny Carnarvon - Western Australia
Flashing a newer version of the radio won't make you lose 850MHz support.
I'm running 13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10 and when i moved back to NZ i first tried to use 2degrees as my network provider, but they run on mainly 900MHz and I couldnt get reliable reception at home, but once i switched to Telecoms XT network which is a perfect frequency match for the A3335 Wildfire (the 850/1900 from Telstra) I've had no problems with reception.
If you really want I can upload the original firmware from the Telstra rom as a flashable zip.
no problems, i will wait till i can test if it still works on 850 and was also wondering if flashing the radio that came with telstra could help get bluetooth working with CM7, but is prob more an issue with CM7

[Q] 3G Fix with Cyanogenmod 7.1

I have been trying to get the 3G patch done with CM7, but when I do the Custom Recovery, install Zip, and I select the 850/1900 3G fix zip, I get a "Amend scripting is long longer supported......switch to Edify scripting... to get a working update package."
I see some people copy/paste files in certain directories manually...Can someone give me the rundown on this, It's very frustrating not having the Defy on 3G. And yes, I have tried all the basebands in the utility.
Thanks
Paul
Hey Paul,
So you're having 3g problem with cm7? Could I ask you which build you have installed (name of the zip file's ok)?
I haven't heard anyone using a 3g fix on cm7 for months and I mean almost never and maybe not since before the RC releases anyways. The proof is also that your patch doesn't work because is coded in amend and that means before cm7 and ClockWorkMod recovery v3.0..
But if it is still what you want to do, could you also post it here (attach it or give me a link for it) and I will have a look for you. Then I can either tell you where and how to replace files or even create a new patch that will work on newer CWM recovery.
Cheers.
Hey Al, Thanks a bundle, Like Ive said in another post, I've been dealing with mobile phone for a long time, and now when the tables have turned cause I feel like a n00b. LOL
I have the latest Cyanogenmod: CM7.1.0-jordan-signed. It's in my unlocked Defy which has the bands UMTS 900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900 HSDPA. I need the 850/1900. I chose in the selector all the basebands that use this combo but nada. I even got help from my local carrier for firmware information, but even so I cant find that firmware anywhere. So i wanna try all my options before I call Motorola or flash my phone to stock and send it to get replaced, complaining that I cant use my network. My phone was purchased last Thursday.
So that's that. My phone also is a Euro Variant.
Cheers,
Paul
Here is the "patch" that won't run
Fix_3g_850.1900Mhz-signed.zip: 850, 1900MHz
http://www.mediafire.com/?31y36az6r2w8jws
In another Android Forum, they ran it on Cyanogenmod 7.1 using custom recovery and fix the solution. But it won't run from mine.
Paul
UPDATE: Another member from GrupoAndroid, re-built this for CM7, i ran it and didnt solve my issue.
Info
Hey Al,
Someone on another forum told me that to regain the 3G on my phone there is a Chinese ROM that fixes the band issue, have you heard of this?
Hey Paul,
I had a look and yes that patch is just the radio files and probably old ones because the patch was coded in Amend.
So I've made a new one in Edify that should work; I mean now install properly on your version on CWM recovery as I have no clue if this will really solve your 3G problems.
Before you install it though, either make a nandroid backup of your current build (recovery->backup/restore->backup (all)) OR simply make a copy of the whole bp_nvm_default folder located in /system/etc/motorola as a safety net.
Lastly, I would also suggest you to give a shot and the other patch (baseban139.zip) that I found here which apparently contains the same but most recent Defy radio files.
So flash either or and see how it goes...
I hope it fixes your problem and if it does; I charge one hit on the "Thanks button"
Cheers,
/ AL
Oki doke.....installing 3G fix attempt. (i did backup)
.....FAIL. No Service. Selected network unavailable.
No Voice nor Data.
Should I flash the baseband file you made over this or should I restore first?
I went ahead and did the baseband zip install,
Voice: Available
Data: EDGE
Any other suggestions? No 3G....
No thanks for me then... ;-) --> but I might remind you that i did put time into this for you; making the pach, the replies and all --> so it would be nice of you to recognize that somehow............
No sorry, none that I can think of anyway.
Try to ask on the main CM7 thread maybe...
I'm on telus having issue finding a radio that works well and 3g does not work just wondering if you could give me a hand I flash cm7.1 on the defy after rooting, all I get is a H on my data connection

There are already a few threads, but I don't think any progress so far. I'm interested in this as well, but we'd need the TMO RUU first...
As mentioned, there are a few other threads on this but no progress has been made yet.
The Samsung process requires enabling the DIAG mode (which only works on Sprint model) to enable RNDIS connectivity -- otherwise the Qualcomm software won't work.

I think that is true otherwise the Google edition would have been pentaband hspa+ correct? Basically the Google edition, att version, HTC Dev edition are same hardware and T-Mobile different. Not sure why HTC does that, makes sense to disable bands thru software like Samsung does.

As of yet, no T-mobile RUU has been released and a Nandroid would likely not contain the radio partition. We need someone to dump their entire eMMC partition table and then clone it onto a dev edition (AT&T phone) to start to make any progress.

I'm interested in this as well and I, too, have been tracking a few other posts. I believe I've seen people documenting the T-Mobile US model as PN0713000 (ro.aa.modelid), whereas the US Developer Edition and the AT&T edition have a modelid of PN0712000. I have no idea whether this indicates different hardware or if it's just an indicator that's used elsewhere in the code. Exactly what's used to determine whether to enable the additional T-Mobile frequencies, is still TBD but a good start would be to set correct modelid and CID on a T-Mobile ROM, preferably an RUU. A failure on anything short of that is not, in my opinion, definitive. That's not to say experiments on other than a T-Mobile RUU are worthless -- we may stumble on the correct settings. At a minimum, though, I'd try setting all of
- a T-Mobile US model id
- a T-Mobile US CID
- maybe even using a stock T-Mobile build.prop

That was the first thing I tried after S-Off. Flashed radio via bootloader, changed CID and all IDs. No dice.

Yeah, stock, odexed and relocked my bootloader. Everything I could possibly do to make it T-Mo without an RUU.

Dang! OK, thanks. It's not looking good but there still may be something we're not seeing.
Again, we haven't really made any definitive answers because we don't have a T-Mo RUU or an eMMC dump from a t-mo device. The radio partition itself may not be all that is required.
There are other partitions which seem to suggest they play a role in setting up the radio characteristics.

Tell me how!
I have both the T-Mobile version and the Dev version. Tell me how to do those dumps and I'll do it.

The basic method is to use the "dd" command from adb shell or a terminal emulator session. To grab the radio you do
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p31 of=/sdcard/radio.img
p31 is the partition where the radio's stored. "if=" is the input file or, in this case, the partition. "of=" is where the output is written. Once you get the list of partitions, you can just loop through them on both devices.

[Q] only 2g Data after 4.4.2 official update via KIES

Hello,
I have an issue with my gt-i9505.
It was running fine, I received the 4.4.2 OTA update, but it failed several times.
So hooked it up to the PC and used KIES 3 ( latest version ) to update to the latest build.
Suddenly I only had 2G data connection left, I tried switching to WCDMA only and it showed me this circle with a diagonal line in it.
After that I tried rebooting several times, but to no avail.
After this I replaced the sim card, same issue ( went to the provider store to get a replacement ).
So still with this issue, I booted up the recovery and did a hard reset.
Still the same issue.
It is very annoying as I am relying on my mobile data a lot.
Anybody any clue?
1. Paste here one screenshot of what appears in Kies 3
2. Dial *#1234# and paste here one screenshot too pls
For the kies question, what do you want to see in the screen shot ?
Here Is the 1234 screen.
PS im from the Netherlands and this is a Vodafone branded phone.

I am not lying, I am actually serious!
I have rooted the mobile device before though and had flashed several ROM's for testing, but all had 2g/3g/4g working.

Suddenly it all makes sense to me!
This is what I think happened:
I connected the phone to KIES while on the custom firmware, the CSC code must have been set to Bulgarian or something...
Since i did not change CSC afterwards on regular 4.3, I think the value was still set to bulgarian, because now that i think about it I saw the disclaimer in a weird language to me...
So downloading the proper firmware now.
Waiting for it and will flash and check back in here...
I feel stupid.
Well... That didn't work either.
Going back to 4.3, praying almost..
Edit: can't downgrade.
Oh wonderful day
Edit: restored but still only 2g....
Edit:
Just keeps getting weirder and weirder.
I was in another town and suddenly saw the G logo change to E
When I was almost leaving the city I had a working 4G connection.
I leave the town and back at G again sadly...
Seriously this thing is freaking me out...
Bump.
Still the same issue, Provider is at a loss as well it seems.
Samsung is looking into replacing the handset, but deciding if they will takes them a week.
The help received here is very appreciated.
Hope you guys can help me solve this.
Checked my sim in a S3 and well... It worked !
Got instant 3G connection.
So now we can surely say it is the phone.
Also flashed agian with 4.4.2 official stock rom, issue is persistent.
Hope you guys can help me
Self bumping ...
Please help guys!
It is driving me insane!

Hello Repulsa,
Yes I did,I even recreated it via settings on the mobile provider website, even after that only the 2G connection works.
When I go into servicemode, none of the suggested key inputs give me anything, it just stays on that page.
If connected to the GSM network (900), I will see it as connected in the service menu.
When I select WCDMA it shows me that it is unavailable.
IF it sees a WCDMA connection, it shows no data and on registering it on the network all connection is lost.
If it sees the WCDMA connection it will state Band1 and IDLE constantly, it will go to active for 10 seconds and jump back to IDLE.
Also:
In this servicemenu it states :
IMEI Certi : NA
But if I do *#06# the correct IMEI is shown...

Goodluck and Make sure to check if your baseband version change to MK9 and if you wanna go back on FNB8 then feel free to download it from here , Instead of saying Thanks , Please feel free to hit the thanks button right there LOL
Edit: @SnoopNL If your problem still persist , then feel free to send your phone in customer service for repair. Your part of EU mate , and Im sure they will fix your phone for warranty. Try to flash the GSM and Wifi fix FNB8 from the Link i gave you ,(Check if its gonna get fix, IF NOT) then send it to them.

Well, it didn't work so went to the service center.
you want to know their answer:
We can't do anything for you!
When i showed him the servicemode menu, he was stunned and did not know what it was...
My provider is refusing to help me in a quick way, now calling Samsung praying for help.
But really, I've missed 2 agenda appointments and had to drive home! to get wifi to load google maps...
Still they say i have to wait for them.
This is insane!
For all of you :
Thank you so much for all your effort and help!
Edit:
For now I have switched to the evil apple....
You guessed it, EVERYTHING works!
On the gt-i9300 : Everything works.
Edit2:
So on advice of Samsung I have flashed CM to my phone.
It did not resolve the issue, but might shed some light on it.
It constantly showed an E, so there was an Edge connection...
When in the menu I switched to CWDMA only and phone process crashed.
So tried another setting, only GSM : Again failure and a crashing phone process...
Only setting to worldwide or LTE lets me connect to Edge, nothing else.
And to make it more fun, I tried with a sim of a person next to me with also a GT-I 9505, with a SIM that supports 4G and on a location where we verified there was 4G coverage and saw it on his phone.
So booted CM for the first time with his sim and the result was the above.
I can now safely say : this is a hardware issue to my opinion.
Also noticed that some of my SMS messages have been sending 8 times , 10 times or even not at all for some!
If anybody wants to have a last shot at this: Be my guest, but I am not expecting this thing to work as it should anymore.
I just checked my pc and checked my AV software ( the only consistent software between my machines) and found out that a lot of DLL files used by kies were blocked by my AV ...
Can this help understand the issue?
It even blocked adb-windows.exe from being loaded.
What I will do :
Remove the AV from the pc.
Run the AV removal tool.
Reboot
Reconnect the phone.
Reflash it.
See if issue is resolved.
Will post back later today.
Fingers crossed people!
P.S.: AV is Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 with protected mode ENABLED.
Final update.
Ok, so I changed the CSC to VDF...
Was on SIM.
Still no 3G, only 2G.
On a different provider it goes up to Edge.
Could it be the IMEI Certificate is used for higher speed connections?
Either way, this phone is a drama.
And well the 'service' from samsung hasn't really been optimal.
After it has been swapped, I'm going for a different brand.
