Fix unexpected screen sleep! - Droid Ultra General

Are you tired of your Mini/Ultra/Maxx falling asleep at random while using it? Does the phone fall asleep while actively scrolling through your home screens and apps drawer? Well, my mother and I have both had this issue and I found the solution to fix both phones:
INSTALL AND SET ANOTHER LAUNCHER.
And that's it. If you haven't already, use Google Experience Launcher to get some of the KitKat Moto and the Big Red didn't give us!

Yep, the stock launcher watches the proximity sensor (to the left of the earpiece at the top) and if you pass your hand or something a few inches above it will mistake this for putting in a pocket or a bag and will sleep the display. It's a nice feature, actually, unless you regularly pass your hand over that sensor.

I just wanted to put this in the open. The people I know and undoubtedly many others find it annoying, including myself. The screen shuts off on me even in broad daylight.

HA!!! Thanks! It seems it is exactly like my issue posted some time ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2672614

I noticed that too. But it only happened in the app drawer of stock launcher. It doesn't happen using GEL or any other launcher.

Competition for Galaxy S II users: what annoys you most?

Competition: how many times can you lock the screen with one hand without pressing the volume button!
Winner gets a 4-am wake-up call when the battery is recharged.
The second place gets an e-mail written by my pants when the screen-lock fails to turn on, following a headset call.
Third place will get a special mod that allows you to start your audiobook player with the headset button with the screen-lock on, and the screen off (a usefull feature when your hands are not free).
Just kidding, there is no such mod, the third place gets nothing.
What annoys me the most? Appart from pressing volume button while locking screen, its the fact that all my callers are complaining that they hear echo... going to exchange the phone today...
Non of the other things bothers me... I usually sleep very hard, so 4am wakeup tone that my phone is being fully charged cannot wake me up neither my girlfriend was complaining...
I had nothing to report as nothing annoyed me till today unless when I plugged my Headphone and made a call. The Volume in a call through the headphone at even maximum level is pathetically low.But that is not the case with Earpiece or Bluetooth headset.
Regards.

1. I can live with 1,5 second delay when waking up phone, but home button lag is killing me. I know, this ks because of voice command "feature", but what about users like me who will never "talk" to their phones (unless being completely drunk)?
2. The famous game freezes. I bought this phone mainly for gaming, but they are simply freezing or crashing to home screen. On all (official) currently available firmware versions. Thanks to LitePro, now i can play with no problems.
I had few more very annoying problems, but thanks again to LitePro who ironed them out. Also i had to delete most of notification sounds. No need to explain why
I know, my first impresions with this phone wasn't very good and i said some bad words, but thanks to this great community - i love my SGS2 now

Every single time (see attached).
The thing that annoys me most is the same thing that annoyed me about the HD2.... whining users that complain about utterly ridiculous things on xda, opening a new thread every time they come up with some vague idea of something their phone can't do. If you want a cup of tea, BUY A TEASMAID!!!
i never hit the volume button yet i use the physical lock button
Matter of handling I suppose .oO(you're not handling it right! xD)
What annoys me is the lack of 2.3.4 update (not that I need much from it, but it feels like they're not working on it as much as on the I9000) and the lack of proper source (everyone uses the binary kernel cause the source one isnt as stable even after padding)
oh and the reason why they've hidden hw accelerated disk encryption, or the lack thereof
The fact that Driving Mode randomly turns itself on, leading to excruciating embarrassment when an incoming text or email is read out at full volume in a public place.
the wifi sharing battery drain that starts randomnly...
Lazy gits that whine and ask about the yellow triangle without even searching the threads
The stock email app, which is the only free one which works with exchange doesn't request the keyboard to bring up the spelling suggestion list - so only the samsung keyboard works with this, or using perfect keyboard and having it turned on permanently.
The stock music app hasn't been thought out well enough in that it allows you to access music bypassing the library list. This of course means using the back button never returns you to this list and they never thought to put a link in the menu to get to the music library (such a simple fix!) - solved that with player pro though
Stock SMS app not allowing you to scroll up through the messages you are replying to whilst you are replying - of course handcent gets around that.
Touchwiz launcher - can't set a different home screen, folders created in the app drawer and then dragged onto one of the home screens are now 2 seperate folders, rather than a hard link - meaning you update one, and the other also needs updating.... Thanks to Go Launcher Ex this is no longer an issue.
Tbh hardware wise it's spot on - it's just that Samsung seem to have rushed the software out.

Play Store doesn't remember position in list

Hi,
I recall this being a problem on android years ago, and it was fixed, but appears to be back. If I am browsing apps in the Play Store, each time I back out of an app screen to the app list, the list repositions itself at the top, rather than reflecting the position I was at before I clicked into a specific app screen. When working through a large list this is a real frustration.
I haven't seen anyone else complaining of this which makes me wonder if somehow it is just me. I have tried clearing data, and uninstalling updates to no avail, and this issue has persisted across two factory resets.
I am running the stock factory ROM with the Trinity 7 kernel.
Any thoughts?

I'm having this problem as well. No matter what I do its always going back to the top.
This is very annoying it does it on both my android devices, which is the Epic 4g Touch aka Samsung Galaxy S2 and Nexus 7, when you are looking at your apps history in the play store app. So when I want to scroll through my previous apps say on my nexus 7 and its incompatible and I hit back it goes to the top after I just scrolled through 1or 2 hundred apps. Same thing on my epic 4g touch. Also I think they should make it so you can just check off as many apps as you want like in email to delete but in the apps store so you can install multiple apps like if you factory reset or are into rooting. I hope they do something about this soon.

4.1.2 broke swiping?...

Is anyone else having problems with swiping left and right etc since 4.1.2?
My device recognises the swipe but doesn't complete ie when ctolling through home screens the page won't move to the next page it will stay where it is and you just see the page move a little bit and then go back.
Hope that makes sense.
Please reply if you're having this problem or not

I've noticed this as well since 4.1.2 but it only happens for the first few seconds after switching the screen on. I've had to apply a bit more force in swiping to bring down the Notifications or to go from screen to screen on Home and the app drawer. Gently flicking the screen doesn't work and stuff like Notifications just flips back up, but after 20-30? seconds it works fine again.
I've noticed this aswell, but don't think the new update is the cause as I was experiencing it before.
Just out of curiosity do you use another device such as HOX? Because I have a HOX, and the swiping is much smoother on that, flicking goes from screen to screen rather than a drag which the Nexus required, if you do use another device perhaps its just the change in device like my case ?
Hmmm.
Cant decide whether or not to take it back and try a replacement.
As said above i have to now use a full swipe across the screen with my finger while holding the tablet in the other hand. I cant just use one hand and flick it with my thumb like i used to be able to.
Ive done a factory reset but that hasnt helped at all.
Ill upload a video of the problem soon so you guys can compare it to yours.

I've noticed that my home screen is not as responsive, though I can't tell in your video if it's as severe. I have to make a strong swipe to move to the next page or it will just bounce back to the current page I'm on. So sometimes it takes me a couple times to switch screens since I'm used to it normally changing. Hope that makes sense.
I run CNA 3.8.0 which uses 4.1.2; I haven't noticed that problem previously on 4.1.1
I also have to swipe the notification bar further in order for it to stick. I used to only have to go 1/3 to less than 1/2 of the screen for it to work.

I've got a new c9O 32GB and mine does the same thing. Its better if I use one hand to hold it from the edges while using the other hand to touch. Using one hand to hold and swipe/scroll/ anything is an effort in futility. And its not just at the Home screen/App menu for me. It also locks up completely from time to time. Do we know what kind of memory the 32GB model uses? Not happy about this at all. Asus really screwed up on this one.

I have this issue as well. My first nexus which was a 16gb didnt have this problem but my current one which is a 32gb does this, especially with the notification bar which is quite annoying. Atleast its not just me
I haven't noticed this. I was having continual touch screen issues that seemed to get progressively worse as time went on. Days before I received my 4.1.2 update, majority of the time my tablet was unusable it seemed, requiring a reboot to work again. Then I finally got a notification that 4.1.2 was available. Since installing it, I've had *zero* touchscreen issues...
You can check me off next to "I fricken love it", however I have nothing to offer in regard to the other issues that you folks speak of. Maybe they were existent prior and I never noticed, who knows.
Damn, this is true. All. I thought it was TSF shell that I use, but it is not. I almost immediately upgraded to 4.1.2 so I was not that accustomed to 4.1.1, but now that you say, yes. You have to slide all the way, both screens and what bothers me more, notifications. Ugh.
I'm still not sure I'm following this. With both Apex and the stock launcher, I'm not noticing any significant change. If I'm in the app drawer and I want to swipe left or right, I can flick the screen and move my finger all but a half inch and the gesture applies accordingly and I see the screen move. Notifications feel no different as well. Am I missing something?
Same here homepage screens bounce back if I don't follow through with the swipe

Having this exact problem to. For me I would hesitate to suggest that this is more prominent when the tablet just been woken up. Really wish it hadn't changed.
I'm having similar problems on my stock, rooted 4.1.2 N7. It's become harder to flick-swipe between screens and the like. I don't have a screen protector on my device either.
Was first raised in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943613 guess more people are noticing it now. Hope it'll be fixed in 4.2
has anybody tried the 4.2 update to see if it has fixed this?
After updating to 4.2.1 i started noticing this issue in both AOSP browser, chrome, app drawer and notification pulldowns... Annoyed my ass off... anyway, after some hard googling, it appears to be a 4.2.X issue? So after flashing CM10 (4.1.2) the problem is gone, but the 4.2 sweetness is as well...
Please star the issue here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39892
Update:
After flashing 4.2.1 again, everything seems to be working just fine... I'm just left clueless
I used to have the same problem. Can anyone here who has this problem right now tell me if they have enabled "Magnification Gestures" under accessibility in the settings menu? If so, disable it and see if the problem is better.

I attempted to write an app to do this a long time ago. If its app-based like that, it needs to keep at least a partial wakelock on the phone to "listen" for the knock knock.
My guess is, on a multi-core CPU like the G2 has, they are turning off all but one core and putting that one core in the lowest MHz it will run, just to "listen" for the knock knock. Not app-based, but kernel based (like PGM). Clearly this doesnt use very much battery at all, as judged by the stellar battery life people have been reporting and that Ive seen on my own G2.

I thought it worked off a motion sensor.. unlike the HTC One kernels and franciscofranco's mako kernel, which use the touchscreen. I can't remember where I read it but I think it uses motion sensors for this, gyro or something
I don';t think it uses the main CPU cores, it uses another ultra low power one to work. This is why these features drain so much on the One, because it doesn't have the extra things that the G2 and MotoX have
no idea what I am doing in this forum but I thought I'd answer it
Edit:
The software platform is Android 4.2.2, and atop that is LG’s skin. LG has added a bunch of new features to its skinned Android experience, although its visual themeing remains essentially unchanged. Double tap to turn on and off uses the built in accelerometer to wake the phone up or turn it off – you just double tap quickly on the device when it’s in an off state to turn it on, and double tap quickly on a blank part of the display or status bar to turn it off. I don’t have a problem getting my index finger to the raised power button, but this is obviously an accommodation just in case that’s difficult.

I lose about 1% battery every 3-4 hours when idle the whole time so while it may consume more battery the amount lost doesn't matter to me since idle drain is still hardly anything.
With the screen off and in the right light I can see hundreds of small grid like squares. I always assumed that they had something to do with the knock on feature.

I'm pretty sure it's NOT the accelerometer.
I tried it, and it even works with the slightest touch I can do. I hardly touched it at all. Can't believe, that there was any motion.
Furthermore it doesn't work when knocking with my fingernail or any other thing.
So I think, it really works by touch-recognition by the display.

you are right. it's definitely the touch screen waiting for the touches.
just try it on the edges on the screen - still works. next to the edges - doesn't work.
There's this post that I read somewhere from HardwareZone:
Not too sure if this is a solution, my imagination or simply I have gotten perfect overnight on using the KnockON feature but the insensitivity issue, that many and myself, have been facing is now gone - since last night, after I performed the following tests on my G2. (Yes, thses are merely TESTS, so wasn't expecting much..)
I got my set on the 26/9/13 and until last night this function got rather spot-on accurate and is not behaving in that erratic manner any more - at least for me. Here are the steps :
First Test
- Key in 3845#*802# on your phone dial.
- HW Device Test > Touch Test > Multi Touch Test
At this point, drag your finger across the screen from corner-to-corner and when your done. Press Volume-Up key once to exit.
Second Test
- From the same menu select "Touch Sensing Test 7*12"
- Tap in every box as many times as you want and on the red text as well at the bottom of the screen.
- Press Volume-Up Once to see result
- Press Volume-up again to Exit
- Finally, to exit the whole menu just use "return" soft key.
Once again, I like to highlight as strange as it may sound the above method has worked for me. And if not, then something definitely has. Do take note, Rockwell screen protector is still on and lastly, please do share your findings.

I tried it and strangely this seems to work. I can't tell if it's placebo but now I'm a hell lot more confident that my phone will wake up at the first pair of knocks.
Also, this is definitely true for me:
The knock on is 100% effective the first try when my phone is lying flat on my desk OR vertical on a car mount. In fact, these are the only 2 instances where I actually use KnockON. When I hold my phone, I naturally use the power button. Yes, I still do have probs with knockON when I use my thumb to wake it up while holding the phone.
3845#*802# did nothing for me. No menu.
There are apk for the knock on feature. But I'm sure there are libs and services involved

no idea what I am doing in this forum but I thought I'd answer it

Haven't looked into any code but Brian is knowlegable when it comes to these things
Could be the reason why, *according to reviews* it doesn't work 100% of the time

Could be the motion sensor. Try doing the double tap while holding the phone in your hand... It become completely unreliable. BUT, it's 100% reliable for me while the phone is laying on a flat surface.
