Competition for Galaxy S II users: what annoys you most? - Galaxy S II General

Competition: how many times can you lock the screen with one hand without pressing the volume button!
Winner gets a 4-am wake-up call when the battery is recharged.
The second place gets an e-mail written by my pants when the screen-lock fails to turn on, following a headset call.
Third place will get a special mod that allows you to start your audiobook player with the headset button with the screen-lock on, and the screen off (a usefull feature when your hands are not free).
Just kidding, there is no such mod, the third place gets nothing.

What annoys me the most? Appart from pressing volume button while locking screen, its the fact that all my callers are complaining that they hear echo... going to exchange the phone today...
Non of the other things bothers me... I usually sleep very hard, so 4am wakeup tone that my phone is being fully charged cannot wake me up neither my girlfriend was complaining...

I had nothing to report as nothing annoyed me till today unless when I plugged my Headphone and made a call. The Volume in a call through the headphone at even maximum level is pathetically low.But that is not the case with Earpiece or Bluetooth headset.
Regards.

What I hate about the device?Well,I wanted to buy a Tegra 2 tablet. After buying the GS2 everything else seemed slow.

1. I can live with 1,5 second delay when waking up phone, but home button lag is killing me. I know, this ks because of voice command "feature", but what about users like me who will never "talk" to their phones (unless being completely drunk)?
2. The famous game freezes. I bought this phone mainly for gaming, but they are simply freezing or crashing to home screen. On all (official) currently available firmware versions. Thanks to LitePro, now i can play with no problems.
I had few more very annoying problems, but thanks again to LitePro who ironed them out. Also i had to delete most of notification sounds. No need to explain why
I know, my first impresions with this phone wasn't very good and i said some bad words, but thanks to this great community - i love my SGS2 now

Lol i have never heard this fully charged sound. *g*
But the batterie drain is really heavy. Maybe i buy an extended akku.

Every single time (see attached).
The thing that annoys me most is the same thing that annoyed me about the HD2.... whining users that complain about utterly ridiculous things on xda, opening a new thread every time they come up with some vague idea of something their phone can't do. If you want a cup of tea, BUY A TEASMAID!!!

i never hit the volume button yet i use the physical lock button
Matter of handling I suppose .oO(you're not handling it right! xD)
What annoys me is the lack of 2.3.4 update (not that I need much from it, but it feels like they're not working on it as much as on the I9000) and the lack of proper source (everyone uses the binary kernel cause the source one isnt as stable even after padding)
oh and the reason why they've hidden hw accelerated disk encryption, or the lack thereof

The fact that Driving Mode randomly turns itself on, leading to excruciating embarrassment when an incoming text or email is read out at full volume in a public place.

the wifi sharing battery drain that starts randomnly...

Lazy gits that whine and ask about the yellow triangle without even searching the threads

The stock email app, which is the only free one which works with exchange doesn't request the keyboard to bring up the spelling suggestion list - so only the samsung keyboard works with this, or using perfect keyboard and having it turned on permanently.
The stock music app hasn't been thought out well enough in that it allows you to access music bypassing the library list. This of course means using the back button never returns you to this list and they never thought to put a link in the menu to get to the music library (such a simple fix!) - solved that with player pro though
Stock SMS app not allowing you to scroll up through the messages you are replying to whilst you are replying - of course handcent gets around that.
Touchwiz launcher - can't set a different home screen, folders created in the app drawer and then dragged onto one of the home screens are now 2 seperate folders, rather than a hard link - meaning you update one, and the other also needs updating.... Thanks to Go Launcher Ex this is no longer an issue.
Tbh hardware wise it's spot on - it's just that Samsung seem to have rushed the software out.

That doesn't fix the problem of the forums becoming diluted with repeated requests. You've just suggested ignoring the problem.

i am "annoyed that wifi-sharing" eats 15% of my battery (but i still make it trough the day without problems.

My Vibrant Rant

So, I got the vibrant, and overall I like it because its much more responsive than both my G1 and MyTouch, but kind of have the following thoughts.
1. I feel having an LED has to be a big mistake/oversight. I cant imagine the LED would have much added cost for samsung nor be very big/require much space. Yet would have a GREAT improvment on the user experience. I hate not being able to glance at my phone and see what happened. Plus, it's alot less battery than having to turn on the screen. There are some hacks - forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725458 - being done to compensate, but none are 'great' solutions, although clever.
2. Battery life - for an AMOLED screen, I'm surprised my battery drains as fast as it does. It lasts me 3/4 of a day more or less. I do have a few things installed, and do use the feed widgt for facebook etc, and have gmail and work email synced. I think it still doesnt last as long as it should. I'm considering removing the facebook widget and adjusting sync times to get more battery back, but still feels lacking.
P.S. : Isnt there some sort of App that can help me identify which apps are using the most battery/CPU time?
3. Calendar Notification - This is something I cant understand. I have worke mail synced to my phone, as well as my calendar for it synced. I get long vibrations and sound (if my phone isnt on vibrate), but there is no way I can find to adjust the notification to be less annoying. I know other users have noticed the same issue
4. Bloatware - I dont mind the fact that they install alot of apps on the phone that other users may find interesting, but I really feel they should make it easier to remove them. I shouldnt have to go through extra effort to get the bloatware removed.
5. Camera App - its a nice app, but I dont like how after taking a picture it does not switch back to camera... you have to hit the back button.
6. Power on button - You already have to do a slide to unlock... why on earth is the power button so small and obtrusive? I feel this is a bit quircky.
7. Proximity sensor - I dont know about you guys, but it took me a while to figure out why, when I am on the phone, the screen kept lighting up on and off. I *think* I figured out that the proximity sensor right next to the ear piece detects if your head is near the phone, and if it is away from it, it will light up the phone. I find this rather annoying, maybe I hold the phone awkwardly, but several times it has lit up while talking and I've accidentally muted etc.
So ya, </rant>
Overall, the phone is nice and a well needed improvement over my previous phone, but I feel there were just a few simple things that samsung could of done to make it a solid release.
What do others think?

FYI the rant was partially so others (who may want to get the phone) know what issues and downsides I've personally experienced, and partially to see if anyone has any suggestions on ways to imrpove/fix some of my issues.
If you have nothing smart to say next time, it may be best to just keep it to yourself.

this posting was worth it allow for this fine joke of yours...nice one do you do stand up?
@temperbad - the reason people on this forum will harass you about your post is mainly this:
xda-developers is just that - a DEVELOPERS forum. Most people who want to complain about devices go to forums for those devices that address general discussion. This forum caters to people who "mod" their devices. While many new-comers do come to this forum and are welcomed - it is appreciated if they stay on topics related to app modification/generation, themeing, developing and modifying ROMS and such.
So, while many do get on here and post about other crap - it is only tolerated by those that seriously want to use these forums for the intended purposes.
Your rant about this device will most likely only be heard by those who own the device out of necessity or desire - AND, by people who are already committed to owning the device. THEY DON'T CARE about hearing someone complain about a device they are already committed to!
So, in the future please make these kinds of posts on forums on which people discuss more general topics or cater to the device "generally" instead of on a forum that is dedicated to DEVELOPMENT and MODIFICATION.
I am not attempting to be harsh - however, hopefully, others will read this and will not post topics that are not related to this forum.
MOST OF THE REALLY GREAT DEVELOPERS ARE RAN OFF from Development forums because of all the off topic comments. We hope that one day this will stop.... But, I am beginning to feel like all hope is lost...
@shaneaus - yes, I understand that, but I did post in the GENERAL section. Also, I understand this is a developer forum. I'm a developer myself and have trolled the forums for a few years, and there are some development solutions to the problems I mentioned (like notifications) etc...
Thanks for the thoughtful response though.
Every phone has it's shortcomings
Return it or whine about it
At this point I would suggest you move on
wait for the froyo update and some of your issues may be resolved.

Are you people serious? You don't know how a Proximity sensor works on these phones? "Bloatware" as if T-Mobile hid it from you and has SO much of it on this phone? "Photo review, a feature that YOU CAN TURN OFF IN THE CAMERA SETTINGS?!" "PS isn't there an app that will tell me what is using the most battery" - Wow. Just wow. And you call this a "rant"? Maybe you should consult the owners manual before creating threads like this.
You knew or should've known that there is no LED Notification light on this phone. If you're trying to tell me that the battery life is worse on this phone than the G1 you're doing something seriously wrong.

Yes yes.. So true... I stand by my first post with pride.....

can you turn the screen on without pushing power button?

title says it all; its a PITA to reach around through the case to turn the screen on all the time, and, even though the screen is supposed to come on when you push the menu key on the hardware keyboard, it doesnt work that way, at least for me..
Can anyone offer any other suggestions?
I know once I root this, there will be other choices, but, I want to learn more about the device before I root it
thanks so much for your help!
no, since xoom doesnt have soft keys so the only way to turn the screen on its to touch the power button. in other terms if you want to wake the xoom up when screen is off you need to press power button.
hopefully, some one will develop a software fix
for this; I cant be the only person that is annoyed by this..
thanks!
What's so hard about pressing the power button?

if you have the motorola folio case on it, its a pain reaching through the cut out every few minutes to turn the screen on..
Idk if it works on the xoom but simply lockscreen on the market has a feature that uses the devices proximity sensor to unlock the phone, it might be just what you are looking for. Like I said, not sure about compatibility but the developer is pretty active here on xda and he might be able to figure something out.

The Xoom does not have a proximity sensor. One developer that frequents the forms and gave us all a screenshot app for the Xoom for free, has an App Killswitch which does the opposite action that you want. When you close the case, the light sensor senses the darkness and turns the screen off. It would take more battery but likewise would be possible to do it the way you wish when opening the cover. Maybe if we ask nicely, he can make it happen
well, I installed nolock, from the market, and it reduces the steps to one to get the screen on; when you push the power button, there is no lock screen to go through, which helps, but I wish there was a way to wake it up with either the keyboard, or just tapping the screen..
I'm sure this will come one of these days..
EDIT: It only works sometimes, not ready for 3.0 I guess....
It is possible but will not work until we have a deodexed ROM. The is a way to remap the volume keys to wake the screen but as soon as the keyguard kicks in the volume keys are disabled. With a deodexed ROM I can disable keyguard. An alterative option I might be able to work out is to wake the screen with a paired keyboard via blurtooth. So far in my testing this is working well.
Basically I have mapped the F1 key on my keyboard to wake/sleep the Xoom.

Try to push the below file using adb ... you need root for this to work. After rebooting the right ctrl key on the Motorola keyboard should become a power button for you. Let the screen goto sleep for a few minutes and attempt to wake it using the button. Let me know if this works.
Download:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?hsqqsehpcjr812t
ADB PUSH:
adb remount
adb push Vendor_22b8_Product_093d.kl \system\usr\keylayout\Vendor_22b8_Product_093d.kl
adb reboot
Make sure you unplug the USB cable before testing. I think while it is plugged into USB keyguard is disabled.
EDIT:
Getting Back to Default Settings:
Download:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?3sxm4n1wh86a7u8
ADB Push:
adb remount
adb push Vendor_22b8_Product_093d.kl \system\usr\keylayout\Vendor_22b8_Product_093d.kl

I appreciate it man, but I haven't rooted the xoom yet..
I want to wait a bit, and learn it better before I do.
Even when I got my evo last june, I waited a few weeks b4 rooting to learn it beter.
thank you for the file!
This has been discussed many times on this forum.
Long story short, I agree with you, especially since I leave the xoom on a table during a meeting. My solution...I downloaded Widgetsoid2.x. Among other widgets, I have a no turn-off widget on my main page. walking into a meeting, i hit it, forcing the xoom to stay on. obviously kills the battery, but i still get two full days.
not pretty, but it works.

I personally don't like the power button placement myself. It's all personal preference. But that's the benefit of getting and Android platform right? If something doesn't quite fit our preference we can personalize it. I think that's all the OP is asking for.

What is that you are doing that it is going to sleep? The easiest thing would be not to let it sleep so quick. Set the timeout to 15 minutes or something.
I guess I am still treating this like my EVO, which, doesnt get the best battery life if you leave it on too long..this thing gets awesum battery life, so I think I wll start leaving the screen on longer, until someone comes up with software that will wake it up easily..

i have few seconds delay, so i have to hint people nearby don't talk anything yet before it really hang up, as annoying as the wake up lag i have to wait few seconds just to see the clock.
Imho it's a feature, not a bug. If the sensor is too sensitive, it turns the screen on even with slight movements of the phone during the call. HD2 had exactly this problem, and I hanged up the call with my ear several times. So I'm actually happy that SGS2 waits a bit longer to clear things up.
Also if you just want to hang up, you can use power button for that (without turning the phone off), there is a setting for it in well .. settings.
Yuuuuup definately a problem! No one cant say otherwise. Annoying as well :[email protected]

Lag in Dialer/Contacts

I know this issue has been discussed several times in various threads but I'd like to give it its own thread so we can highlight the significance of the problem.
Before I start I'd like to point out that my last observation is based in Stock LJ4, and before that I've used several ROMs, both stock and custom and this issue, exists in all of them.
Issue:
3-4 seconds lag when opening dialer or contacts.
Now some might argue that once it opens, the subsequent times its quite instant, but that's due to it being in memory. BUT use the phone as normal for some other activities and come back to dialer/contacts and your greeted with the lag again.
This is supremely frustrating and unacceptable for a flagship with a frickin Quad Core processor! These are basics! Phone, Contacts, Messaging, Email are the core activities of any phone and if that isn't instantaneous then they've lost the point in my books.
What's worse is that all other (more heavy) apps open very quickly and operate really fast so I can't understand how Samsung can screw something so basic up.
Please voice your concerns here, this needs to be addressed.
Ps: one immediate solution where the developers can help is to hack the stock apps and keep them in memory always.

Mods are good im not against it, but for this issue i expect Sammy to resolve.... I mean come on... Sammy should know this before hand and should have fixed long back.... I hate them for this...
Thanks again for the guy who opened this thread...! Hopefully Samsung reads this...!

Thanks for linking that, though I'm not interested in modifying the core in a major way, just locking the phone and Contacts in memory

You could probably PM the OP of that thread, asking him how to tweak his init.d script to only lock the Phone and Contacts in memory, leaving out all the other tweaks.

I probably will, but as the poster above me says, the point of this thread is that Samsung should not be expecting us to fix all these basic things. And 95% of the public will have no clue how to either.

well based on how many Galaxy S devices they've sold, they probably assume that the general consumer does not care or simply does not notice it.
I care and i notice. Who cares about the general consumer.
That is why i use DW phone and contacts.
Super smooth and fast with lots of customization. I recommend it to all

Using exdialer as a replacement. But yes, this is the and the redraw issue are my 2 biggest complaints from the beast. It's almost shameful when u are adding somebody to your phone book and the phone lags for a few seconds before you can open the contacts. :-\

I agree, but I was just addressing the "PS" in your first post. .
Thanks for the thread. It is unacceptable that one of the most important functions is completely laggy. I hope Sammy read this voice and fix this sooner.
Btw, using exdialer in the meantime.

At first, I thought that this delay is happening because the code is not properly optimized due to heavy modification to dialer and contact. But then I realize. What did they really modify? The only "touchwiz" touch to the contact app is the the swipe shortcuts; swipe to left for sending message, and swipe to right for calling (not sure which one is which because I'm now using my secondary rom LOL). I can't think of any for the dialer app. So why the hell did samsung managed the screw it up, right?
Another notable delay is in the lockscreen. But that's quite understandable. Samsung add too much features to their lockscreen, namely: Quick command to unlock, information ticker, Ripple effect, camera quick launch, etc.
Unfortunatelly it is not only the horrible lag at opening, it is more than this.
It looks like Dialer and contatcs samsung apps has been made by somebody who never has used a phone...
Look how they support t9 on dialer... It is absolutely inaceptable.
After a lot of firmware upates I have lost any hope in a fix coming from samsung and move to exDialer.
Just install it and you see what a dialer should be.
Shame on you, Samsung.
Maybe this thread should be named "discussion for Samsung core apps" or something. Then we can all discuss everything in the stock rom: like dialer, contact, messaging, and lockscreen.
This MOD fixed my contact lag in certain way.Feeling much better after lag in contact in all jelly bean rom.

I think the General thread has been very limited while JB was in launch proccess, doing dificult to concentrate in particular problems.
Now that JB is the "default" firmware and that the General thread is more open to new discussion, I think it is better to keep that as specific as possible and open a threat for each problem we find.
As I told in my previous post, I don't has any hope in getting a fix from Samsung, but maybe if we get here enough complaints one Samsung Corp. developer read this, install exDialer, feel ashamed and learn something for the future...
That multitask fix just made my phone go slow and whenever people have lags in roms, the rom devs tell them to uninstall the multitask fix (if they included it in their rom). Ex Dialer is the way to go anyways. Always in memory, always smooth.
Totally agree....the other day a friend of mine who had an iphone wanted to use my phone for a call....and i cant express how that stupid lag had him looking at me amazed for those 3-4 seconds knowing he uses an iphone 3g....since then ive been using ex dialer....but its really frustrating for a phone marketed as being of a top notch performance.....
Yes, when I bought my S3 coming from a 3 y.o. WinMo phone I was REALLY surprised on such a big delay to open Phone/Contacs and also to switch between KeyPad and Contacs even after both are in memory.
Only thing to do was to switch to a 3rd party dealer (xPhonePro in my case, as it has the better options for displaying call logs).
I really don't understand how the most of the S3 users don't complain about this (when I stated my problem in some ROMs thread, 90% of the people seemed surprised I considered it a problem).
Also, as I use the phone to check the time at regular intervals, the 1-2 seconds delay to turn on the screen was really killing me.
Here the only way was yet another 3rd party app to keep the CPU always awake (of course more battery usage too, but during the working time I really need my phone to wake up instantly).
Those 2 big (imho) problems, keep me from considering the Note II as a gift for my dad... as I heard it is effected too.

To the bolded item: Simple. 90% of XDA people are geeks that don't use their phone to call. They use their phone for hacking and modding. I'm sure by now you must have read posts from someone that claimed they have achieved 4 days battery life (they even got screenshot as proof)? LOL
FYI, I have one friend that is no geek just a regular user. He did mentioned to me about this delay problem not too long ago. I think it's safe to say that majority of users think of this as a problem, but they don't know how to convey their complaints to world outside their realm of ignorance (i.e to XDA forum or to Samsung guys). XDA people as I mentioned before, obviously using their phones for something else. And they count for less than 50% of the total (ignorant) users out there.

Do you use all the features?

I'm planning on getting the htc one but some of these features seem really cool on the s4, so my question is do you use them all or are they just a bunch of gimmicks.

Absolutely none, just patiently waiting for CM10

Really the only one that has impressed me is the eraser mode on the camera that removes moving objects... otherwise, all the "smart" features stay off. Battery hogs to the max.

Unless you use the "smart" features you don't know that for a fact. I have been using the smart features on and off for over a week, with the features / gimmicks on and running there isn't much battery drain at all.
While a lot of the features are gimmicks some are actually very useful.
Smart stay - (the best one out of all them, should be in stock Android)
Quick glance - (use this all time while it's on my desk or on a table)
Air view - (helps me dig through text messages fast and zoom in on some websites)
Air gesture - (I actually go in the gallery a lot and this makes browsing photos more fun and... natural? in a sense)
Palm motion - (use this all the time to answer phone calls and mute or pause music also use it to capture screenshots
Direct call - (I have to admit it's nice and very useful to just directly call someone while simply just moving the phone to your head while in the texting or contacts app)

I used Air View for a bit but it made my screen too sensitive which i used those specific programs.
besides that the only Air feature that i might turn on is Air Call Accept. And it only works during phone calls so its not bad.
The watchon TV controller thing is a bit weird. Doesnt work all the time..
Today I was eating lunch with my phone next to me. Got a call and used the gesture to answer and have the speaker turn on without me touching the phone. That was nice. Voice control camera is cool, but saying different things changes how the camera shoots. I'm still figuring that one out.
Thanks for the replies, none of these sounds useful to me.

OMG... I wasn't trying to come off negative, sorry if it seemed that way. I just hate when people like to call out facts when they haven't even used or tested the subject themselfs.
Notice I also said "unless" you did use them yourself.

Alright, i apologize for the snap judgement. Im fanatical about battery, and they do drain extra, which to me is unacceptable for what you get in exchange. Was much more impressed with the smart stay than any of the new ones, and depending on how many times you let the screen almost time out it can add a fairly substantial amount.
Your right, i should probably rephrase my 'hog' assessment, im probably more picky than others about battery. .
